The Good Dirt
63. Regenerative Bison Farming with Liz Riffle

The Good Dirt

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2021 65:09

On today's episode of The Good Dirt, we're speaking with Liz Riffle of Riffle Farm in Preston County, WV, which is a small bison farm raising grass-fed and finished animals.  Owner and Operator Liz is a U.S Navy Nurse Corps veteran and her husband, Jimmie, is currently still serving on active-duty as a Navy Nurse Corps Nurse Practitioner. Jimmie was born and raised in Grafton, WV. In their own words, Jimmie and Liz are homegrown and proud to now serve this great nation by feeding it!   After near extinction in the 1880s bison have made a comeback, and are now thriving on small operations such as Riffle Farm. Liz says she and her husband discovered bison burgers while traveling in Wyoming, and became interested in the idea of raising them. They eventually found a 64-acre spot where they could let bison roam and graze, and opened for business in 2017. Fast forward to today, and they've almost doubled their operation. Liz shares with us their journey from those beginnings until now, during which she's learned much about regenerative agriculture, working with nature, slowing down and listening to the land. Liz believes that she has a responsibility to honorably raise as well as humanely harvest the bison on her farm. The regulatory system is set up for large-scale meat producers and sometimes makes it difficult for small scale farmers to accomplish their sustainability goals. Liz has started a new business, The Honest Carnivore, as a means of teaching other small farmers how to navigate that system, empowering them to continue providing sustainable meat solutions.  Join us on this week's episode to learn more about building trust and transparency in the food chain with bison farmer Liz Riffle.  Listen to the episode on https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-good-dirt/id1492217846 (Apple Podcasts), https://open.spotify.com/show/2lpelAmHPGbMVdOOpxhxTo (Spotify), https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/the-good-dirt-981565 (Podchaser), https://the-good-dirt.simplecast.com/ (Simplecast), https://podtail.com/en/podcast/the-good-dirt/ (Podtail), or on your favorite podcast platform. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for October 4th, 2021. More pressure on vaccinated citizens in Israel to go ahead and get their booster shot. Only those who do will be eligible for the "green pass" needed to get into restaurants, gyms, and other venues. They started giving boosters to everyone 12 and up at the end of August. For some unexplained reason, places like museums and libraries are exempt from the green pass requirement. Still a rough go of it in Russia. That country yesterday reported a record daily death toll from COVID for the fifth time in a week. 890 more deaths and the number of new infections in the past day was the second highest of the year. Overall, Russia has Europe's highest death toll, nearly 210,000 people. Happy holidays from your friends at the CDC. They issued new guidelines for how you should decrease the risk of infection or transmission during the upcoming holiday season. They suggest outdoor or virtual celebrations only, staying 6 feet away from each other, wearing a mask at all times if unvaccinated, putting fans in open windows to keep air circulating, and no traveling unless fully vaccinated and masked on public transportation. Kinda makes you feel all warm inside. Another story about just how determined anti-vaxxers are to avoid vaccines at all costs. A woman recounted on Twitter how her 52-year-old unvaccinated husband wound up in ICU with a ventilator and ECMO from severe COVID. He needed a blood transfusion, but she wouldn't allow it for fear he'd get vaccinated blood. Well, he died, but she says it wasn't because he was unvaccinated. It's hard to believe since many of us are surrounded by them every day, but COVID has created a clown shortage. It's particularly bad in Northern Ireland because many circus clowns went back to their home countries after the initial lockdown. Others found work in countries with more relaxed restrictions. Big recruiting drives for new clowns are underway but applicants have big shoes to fill. I said they have big shoes to fill. In the United States cases were down 27%, deaths are down 6%, and hospitalizations are down 17% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for October 1st, 2021. Time to get your vaccine. We're not talking about your COVID vaccine although you're supposed to get that too. It's also flu shot time. And yes, health experts are very worried that there's plenty of vaccine fatigue out there which could result in an atypical drop in the number of people getting their flu shots. It also could be a hard sell because flu cases are at historically low levels, at least partly because of the pandemic. You might think the vast majority of Americans are of one mind and in favor of vaccine mandates, but an AP poll shows that's not the case. In fact, as we so often are these days, the country is split almost 50/50 on the issue. 51% approve, 34% disapprove and 14% haven't formed an opinion yet. Even 23% of people who have been vaccinated are against mandates. As for how mandates by employers are working, United Airlines say of the employees facing firing for not accepting the vaccine shots, almost half eventually submitted. That leaves only about 320 employees to fire. Delta's trying another tactic, charging unvaccinated workers an extra $200 a month on their health plans. We thought we'd go ahead and answer this question before you ask it. Are you considered fully vaccinated so you can work and travel and go shopping if you do not get a booster shot? The CDC says yes, you're fully vaccinated two weeks after getting a second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or one dose of Johnson & Johnson. Boosters are recommended for people 65 and over, long-term care residents, and those 50 to 64 with health problems like diabetes or heart disease if they got their last Pfizer shot at least six months ago. People who got Moderna and J&J aren't even eligible for boosters yet. In the Broadway show, Aladdin sings about a whole new world and that's obviously what we're living in. Because that show was cancelled Wednesday when several of the company's members tested positive. They had just reopened the show the day before. In the United States cases were down 26%, deaths are up 2%, and hospitalizations are down 17% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13. There are 9,875,879 active cases in the United States. The final day of the Goblin retirement tour featured a short ride, a three-bus journey from the coast to smokey, stormy and hot hot hot Medford for the flight home. A lot of moving parts... would I make all the connections? Plus... three big takeaways and an epilogue to the whole trip.   Day 7 - Green Goblin Retirement Tour Brookings, Oregon to Medford, Oregon to Seattle, WA to... WV   Check out pics over on Insta!   Takeaways   Trust your skills - it turns out my lack of faith in my ability to fix that chain ended up stealing some nice riding. I had plenty of bus opportunities to catch up if disaster struck, plus that Better World Club "towing" option. Should have taken the calculated risk earlier.   Rushed the prep - two things... I didn't go through my tools bag, otherwise I would have had a spare quick link on hand to make a better fix than a twist and a prayer. Second thing was I landed in Portland late and had to leave within a few hours of waking up. That was a bad idea... it rushed my nephew visit and I never could do a once over on the bike.   It is fun to meet people in camp again - I hadn't camped with anyone in the same campsite, let alone had a campground conversation since the summer of 2019... on the Oregon coast! It was fun to trade stories with the guy from Korea and share the conversation I had last episode. Makes me realize how much we've all been missing in this crazy 19 months!   Pedalshift Society As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! Because of support from listeners like you, Pedalshift is a weekly bicycle touring podcast with a global community, expanding into live shows and covering new tours like this summer's upcoming bike tour!
