In this compelling episode, we bring together a panel of deep thinkers, scholars, and podcasters to tackle one of the most debated theological topics in modern Christianity: cessationism versus continuationism. Joining the conversation are your host, Adam Parker, Matthew McGuire, author of A Magical World; David Miller, author of Redacted: The Secret History of Exorcism; and Michael Young, host of The Charismatic Cheetah Podcast. Together, we take a thoughtful and thorough approach to refuting cessationism, making the case that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still active and available today.Throughout our discussion, we explore: • Biblical Foundations: Examining key scriptures often used in cessationist arguments and demonstrating why they do not support the cessation of spiritual gifts. • Historical Continuity: Tracing evidence of spiritual gifts throughout church history, from the early church fathers to present-day testimonies. • The Power of Experience: Personal accounts and compelling stories of how the Holy Spirit continues to work in miraculous ways today. • Addressing Common Objections: Responding to concerns about prophecy, tongues, and healing in the modern church, specifically Charismatic abuses. This episode is not just about theological debate. It is about rekindling a passion for the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Whether you are a continuationist looking for biblical support, a skeptic open to hearing the other side, or a cessationist willing to engage with an alternative perspective, this conversation will challenge and inspire you.Tune in for a rich and thought-provoking dialogue on why the gifts of the Holy Spirit have not ceased and why they matter now more than ever.Read Matthew McGuire's Book, "A Magical World," by purchasing it here: https://mattmcguire.net/home.htmlRead David Miller's Book, "Redacted, The Secret History Of Exorcism," by purchasing it here: https://www.expeditionaryrevival.org/shopFollow Michael Young's Charismatic Cheetah Podcast here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPMqiudbezxvLffmzUA1y_PJ5UCxL3iUA&si=fRcNofJoDT7SjoyrRead the Poythress Article on Spiritual Gifts Here: https://frame-poythress.org/modern-spiritual-gifts-as-analogous-to-apostolic-gifts-affirming-extraordinary-works-of-the-spirit-within-cessationist-theology/Read Rick M. Cessationism is the belief that the gifts of the Spirit (prophecy, speaking in tongues, words of knowledge, and others) ceased when the Apostles died. The idea is that the sign gifts were given for a short time to confirm the message of the Gospel, but that they fizzled out after the 12 disciples passed away. Derry and I don't believe that this is the correct interpretation, nor that it's strongly backed by the Bible. However, we want to give it a fair chance, see what cessationist say and analyze their claims. In this episode we look at Bible verses for and against, church history, and tell our own stories about seeing the powerful workings of God through miracles in our own lives. Enjoy! As believers all over the West and on Social Media quote verse after verse claiming God's protection and even His vengeance against their enemies, we look around us (and at the history of believers for two centuries) and what we see is suffering, persecution, and death. What are we to do with these realities. As usual, a right division of scripture and an understanding of God in this age (separating the different hopes in the Bible) helps us see the truth. #theology #christianity #israel #heaven

In recent years, a growing number of Christians have embraced what is often called “open but cautious” cessationism—a middle-ground approach that acknowledges the possibility of miraculous gifts like prophecy and healing, while remaining wary of their abuses. While this position may appear balanced, I contend that it introduces significant theological confusion, neither fully rejecting nor affirming the cessation of apostolic gifts. This ambiguity undermines the sufficiency of Scripture and opens the door to doctrinal error.Article read from: https://g3min.org/the-perils-of-open-but-cautious-cessationism-a-call-for-doctrinal-clarity/

Send us a textWere the cessationists of the Protestant Reformation the same as those today? Ryan Denton, a Presbyterian minister and church planter, suggests that modern cessationism differs significantly from the cessationism of the Protestant Reformation. Denton argues, through historical examination, that many Protestant Reformers, particularly the Scottish Presbyterians, experienced supernatural power. Leaders such as George Wishart, John Knox, Alexander Peden, and Samuel Rutherford believed in gifts like prophecy, healing, and more. Tune in to discover how the Reformers were more open to the gifts of the Spirit than many in today's cessationist movement.
In this episode, the Rev. Ryan Denton, pastor and church planter in the Vanguard Presbyterian Church, joins us to discuss the recent controversy sparked by his article of Reformation21 critiquing what he identifies as Hyper-cessationism that is prevalent in modern Reformed and Reformed adjacent circles. We discuss the approach of the Reformers and Puritans themselves on the topic, as well as the practical import it has in the life of the Church. Rev. Denton's original article: https://www.reformation21.org/blog/what-is-a-hyper-cessationist Dr. Scott Aniol's response: https://g3min.org/is-it-hyper-cessationism-to-believe-that-god-doesnt-lead-through-visions-dreams-and-impressions/ Rev. Recently, Ryan Denton wrote an article on Reformation21 that is making a bit of a stir online titled, “What is a Hyper-Cessationist?” Denton is convinced that modern cessationism has gone beyond the cessationism of the past and “has become a thick, wet blanket used to smother anything that smacks of the supernatural.” This is what he calls “hyper-cessationism.” I've seen Denton label R. Scott Clarke with this moniker, and, more recently, G3.

Send us a Text Message.GUEST: SCOTT ANIOL, Executive VP and Editor-in-Chief G3 MinistriesThere is no more important issue and pursuit than worshipping God. It's more important than who will be our next president, more important than world peace, more important than your health, financial security, and whatever else we treasure.Scripture makes the primacy of worship clear: King David prayed, “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11).Paul wrote, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31).King Solomon exhorted, “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear [reverence, awe] God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person” (Ecclesiastes 12:13)Psalms, the songbook of the Bible, closes this way: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 150:6)God created man as a worshipful being. We can see this because everyone worships someone or something. If God isn't worshipped, a false god will be substituted—person, pleasure, possession, position, popularity, power, to name just a few.God, as Creator, Sustainer, Savior, and Sovereign over all, deserves our worship. Our peace, purpose, and pleasure in life is directly proportional to how rightly and authentically we worship the Creator. Our guest this weekend is Scott Aniol, Executive VP and Editor-in-Chief G3 Ministries. G3, which stands for “Gospel—Grace—Glory”, is a Christian organization that aims to strengthen the local church through conferences, resources, online articles, podcasts, expository preaching workshops, biblical worship workshops, and local church-based curriculum for Sunday school and small groups.” Their next major conference is Oct. 3-5 in Oklahoma on the issue of Cessationism and whether the miraculous sign gifts are for today?Scott Aniol will join us to discuss “The Primacy of Worship”. He explains in a five-part column series corresponding to each of the “five solas” of the Reformation that worship is even more important than salvation, for salvation is the entry point to proper worship of God.This program aims to be a helpful for individual Christians and also the church, for worship includes but is far more encompassing than music alone. And since it's election season with the Democratic National Convention having just concluded in Chicago, we will discuss what is being worshipped by both parties and how to think about voting for imperfect candidates. ---------------------Let the Little Children Come by Scott AniolThe Primacy of Worship Scott Aniol's series on the 5 Solas of WorshipScripture AloneGrace Alone in Christ AloneFaith Alone
