Should believers speak in tongues today? Is the Book of Acts prescriptive for Christians—or simply descriptive of what happened in the first century? And how do modern Charismatic and Pentecostal practices compare to the biblical gift of tongues? In this in-depth episode of the Bible and Theology Matters Podcast, Dr. Paul Weaver (Associate Professor of Bible Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary and Professor of Bible & Theology for the National Theological College and Graduate School) carefully examines what Scripture actually teaches about speaking in tongues. Drawing from Acts 2 and 1 Corinthians 12–14, Dr. Weaver explains: ✅ The true biblical meaning of “tongues” (glōssai)✅ The difference between Acts 2 tongues and Corinthian tongues✅ 12 biblical principles Paul gives for the use of tongues ✅ Why tongues were a sign for unbelievers✅ The biblical case that tongues have ceased✅ Why a “private prayer language” is not found in Scripture. You'll also hear Dr. Weaver's personal story of growing up in charismatic churches and how a careful study of God's Word changed his understanding of this controversial topic.

Are spiritual gifts just an optional add-on, or are they essential to the gospel's work in the world? In this episode, we dig deep into Scripture to explore how the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus not only purchases our salvation but also secures the Holy Spirit's gifts for the church. We'll navigate the often-contentious debate between Charismatics and Cessationists, examining how both sides can sometimes miss the full picture. We'll address the Charismatic tendency to detach the gifts from the core message of the gospel, and the Cessationist impulse to preach a “gospel” that sidelines the very gifts Christ gave to His people. Anchored in biblical theology, we'll consider whether a gospel without the gifts is really the whole gospel at all.0:00 – Introduction: Is the Gospel Incomplete Without Spiritual Gifts? 3:03 – Defining the Essence of the Gospel 7:52 – The Gospel as the Inbreaking of the Kingdom 10:13 – The Narrow and Broad Senses of the Gospel 15:47 – The Gospel as the Rule and Reign of God 19:09 – Defining the Gospel in Relation to Cessationism 23:30 – How to Know When God is Ruling 27:08 – The Signs of the Kingdom 39:10 – John 14:12 and Doing Greater Things 54:12 – Returning to a Gospel-Centered Approach 56:11 – A Challenge to the Open But Cautious 57:33 – Closing Thoughts Subscribe to The Remnant Radio newsletter and receive our FREE introduction to spiritual gifts eBook. Sunday, July 13, 2025 – Pastor Mike continues the series on the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God Fellowship. Today, we are exploring Fundamental 12 – which is “Divine Healing.” Earlier, it was mentioned that there are a couple of beliefs that distinctly mark our fellowship as Pentecostal: the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues is clearly one, and our belief in “Divine Healing” is another. Both of these truths affirm that the “Gifts of the Spirit” evident in the early church are still active today, just as much needed in these last days as they were in the early church’s beginnings. Divine Healing is one of those mysterious beliefs, even for the most mature and dedicated followers of Jesus, because we don’t always clearly understand what God is doing in our lives and those we love. Why does God heal some people and not others? Why do good Christian people have to suffer, while those who live without regard for God seem to avoid pain and suffering? And I’m sure you may have other questions about why God doesn’t always work in the manner or timing that we expect. We will do our best to explore what God has for us during these difficult and confusing times. Here’s what we do know – God loves us, and He is the Healer. Our role is to ask, pray, seek, and trust Him with the rest. Worship and study with us…

Andrew Rappaport hosts a compelling discussion with Ryan Denton on the often contentious topic of spiritual gifts, diving into the nuances of continuationism and cessationism. They kick things off by exploring the extremes within these doctrines, particularly focusing on Ryan's concerns regarding the cessationist side, which he believes may sometimes be too rigid. As they navigate through definitions and historical perspectives, they emphasize the importance of balancing scriptural interpretation with a recognition of God's ongoing work in the world. The conversation highlights the value of nuanced understanding, encouraging listeners to engage thoughtfully with both traditional and contemporary views of spiritual gifts. Ultimately, this episode serves as an invitation for open dialogue among believers, stressing the significance of discernment in addressing the complexities of faith and practice.Takeaways: The hosts dive deep into the topic of spiritual gifts, discussing continuationism and cessationism, and their nuances, highlighting how these interpretations affect modern Christian practices. Ryan Denton, a Presbyterian minister, shares his perspective on cessationism, arguing that while certain gifts ceased, God can still work through extraordinary means today, albeit in a non-normative manner. Andrew Rappaport emphasizes the importance of biblical accuracy in doctrinal discussions, reminding listeners that miracles may occur but should not be confused with the gifts that were present in the apostolic age. The conversation reveals a mutual respect between the hosts despite their differing views, showcasing how open dialogue can lead to a deeper understanding of complex theological issues. The hosts stress the significance of discernment in evaluating claims of spiritual experiences, cautioning against attributing personal feelings or experiences as direct communications from God. Listeners are encouraged to engage with the hosts on future platforms for more discussions, emphasizing the value of respectful debate in theological circles. Most, if not all, Protestant churches agree on the first six Fundamental Truths we’ve already discussed; it’s when we discuss the Baptism of the Holy Spirit that the differences arise. It’s crucial to realize that for a person to acknowledge their sins and receive forgiveness, the Holy Spirit is the active agent who convicts and leads them to Jesus for forgiveness. At that moment, the Holy Spirit is welcomed into that person's life and takes residence within them. That’s the saving power of the Holy Spirit, but it’s not the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It’s the same Holy Spirit with a different purpose and result. The Baptism is a distinct and subsequent act following salvation. That’s what we’re going to learn today. Spiritual gifts are special abilities God gives believers to build up the church, coming as spontaneous manifestations, enduring abilities, or vocational roles. True discernment requires knowing Scripture thoroughly, as genuine gifts always align with God's Word. While Mark 16 mentions signs following believers, these apply corporately to the church rather than to every individual. Christians should recognize that spiritual warfare is real, though we often blame demons for our own issues. God's miraculous power continues today, though we may not always understand why some prayers for healing go unanswered.Support the show

In this compelling episode, we bring together a panel of deep thinkers, scholars, and podcasters to tackle one of the most debated theological topics in modern Christianity: cessationism versus continuationism. Joining the conversation are your host, Adam Parker, Matthew McGuire, author of A Magical World; David Miller, author of Redacted: The Secret History of Exorcism; and Michael Young, host of The Charismatic Cheetah Podcast. Together, we take a thoughtful and thorough approach to refuting cessationism, making the case that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still active and available today.Throughout our discussion, we explore: • Biblical Foundations: Examining key scriptures often used in cessationist arguments and demonstrating why they do not support the cessation of spiritual gifts. • Historical Continuity: Tracing evidence of spiritual gifts throughout church history, from the early church fathers to present-day testimonies. • The Power of Experience: Personal accounts and compelling stories of how the Holy Spirit continues to work in miraculous ways today. • Addressing Common Objections: Responding to concerns about prophecy, tongues, and healing in the modern church, specifically Charismatic abuses. This episode is not just about theological debate. It is about rekindling a passion for the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Whether you are a continuationist looking for biblical support, a skeptic open to hearing the other side, or a cessationist willing to engage with an alternative perspective, this conversation will challenge and inspire you.Tune in for a rich and thought-provoking dialogue on why the gifts of the Holy Spirit have not ceased and why they matter now more than ever.Read Matthew McGuire's Book, "A Magical World," by purchasing it here: https://mattmcguire.net/home.htmlRead David Miller's Book, "Redacted, The Secret History Of Exorcism," by purchasing it here: https://www.expeditionaryrevival.org/shopFollow Michael Young's Charismatic Cheetah Podcast here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPMqiudbezxvLffmzUA1y_PJ5UCxL3iUA&si=fRcNofJoDT7SjoyrRead the Poythress Article on Spiritual Gifts Here: https://frame-poythress.org/modern-spiritual-gifts-as-analogous-to-apostolic-gifts-affirming-extraordinary-works-of-the-spirit-within-cessationist-theology/Read Rick M.
