Just because the Community of Christ has a statement on non-violence doesn't mean the world is listening. But they may be watching. Non-violence has to be more than a statement. It has to be a way of life, and what better way to make it part of our lives than to start with spiritual practices. Minister Tyler Marz takes us through a meditation on nonviolence in this repost of a previous Awaken to God's Presence. As Community of Christ journeys together toward Jesus, the peaceful One. We hope you use this meditation to reflect on how God is calling you to participate in the work of nonviolence. Listen to other episodes in the Awaken to God's Presence Series. Nijay Gupta is back on Shifting Culture to share about his new book with A.J. Swoboda, Slow Theology. Together we talk about what it means to follow Jesus at a different pace - resisting the constant pressure to react, hurry, and perform, and instead cultivating practices that lead to depth and resilience. In this episode, we explore the role of lament, the necessity of community, and how theology is less about abstract answers and more about orienting our whole lives toward God. Nijay offers wisdom for living faithfully in a turbulent age and shows us how slowing down might be a core practice for our spiritual formation today.Nijay Gupta (DPhil, University of Durham) has written several academic books including Paul and the Language of Faith, and Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church. He has co-edited The State of New Testament Studies, and The State of Pauline Studies. Christianity is the load bearing wall that holds up democracy, and it is crumbling says author, journalist, and senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, Jonathan Rauch. A committed atheist, Rauch says citizens need to take a page from the Christian bible and offer compassion to others, forgive and share power otherwise democracy will not survive. He warns that fear and grievance have replaced biblical values and both religion and society are suffering because of it. Rauch writes about returning faith to focusing on healing instead of dividing in his book, Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Bargain with Democracy.

We're back for Season 27, titled “Taming our Technologies: [Spiritual] Practices for a Digital Age.” This season we have a special co-host, pastor, author, and podcast host Jay Y. Kim! Jay will be joining Ruth all season long to explore the impact technology is having on our lives with God, our attention span, our parenting, our community, and our creativity. Jay and Ruth will wrestle with their own questions and wonderings about finding balance in using technology in good and helpful ways while also acknowledging its challenges. This season aims to be gracefully thought-provoking, practically helpful, and ultimately hopeful and encouraging. In order to dive right in to those big topics, Ruth and Jay are setting up the season with an introductory conversation we are calling “episode 0.” In this episode, Ruth and Jay dive into the topic of taming technology and its intersection with spiritual practices in a digital age. They discuss the complexities and emotional layers of technology's role in spiritual formation, ministry, and personal well-being. Ruth shares her long-standing interest in the subject and how technology has transformed her ministry and personal life. Jay brings his experiences as a pastor in Silicon Valley and shares a touching story about technology's impact on his own family life. Clinical psychologist Alexis Abernethy explores burnout, Sabbath rest, and resilience—reframing rest as spiritual practice for individuals and communities.“For me, it's knowing that the Lord has made me as much to work as much to be and to be still and know that he is God.”On this episode, clinical psychologist Alexis Abernethy (Fuller Seminary) joins Macie Bridge to discuss burnout, Sabbath, worship, mental health, and resilience in the life of the church. Defining burnout through its dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of accomplishment, Abernethy reflects on how church life can intensify these dynamics even as it seeks to heal them. Drawing from scripture, theology, psychology, and her own experience in the Black church and academic worlds, she reorients us to Sabbath as more than self-care: a sacred practice of being still before God. Sabbath, she argues, is not a quick fix but a preventive rhythm that sustains resilience in leaders and congregations alike. Along the way, she points to the necessity of modeling rest, the impact of daily and weekly spiritual rhythms, and the communal posture that makes Sabbath transformative.Episode Highlights“For me, it's knowing that the Lord has made me as much to work as much to be and to be still and know that he is God.”“Often people have overextended themselves in face of crises, other circumstances over a period of time, and it's just not really sustainable, frankly, for anyone.”“We act as if working hard and excessively is dutiful and really what the Lord wants—but that's not what He wants.”“When you are still with the Lord, you look different when you're active.”“Sabbath rest allows you to literally catch your own breath, but also then be able to see what the congregation needs.”Helpful Links and ResourcesThat Their Work Will Be a Joy, Kurt Frederickson & Cameron LeeHoward Thurman, Meditations of the HeartEmily Dickinson, “Some Keep the Sabbath” (Poetry Foundation)About Alexis AbernethyAlexis Abernethy is a clinical psychologist and professor in the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller Seminary. Welcome to this new series, “Something Psalmic,” in which I invite my guests to share what's lifting their spirits and offering them healing and hope right now.In this moving episode of Psalms for the Spirit, I sit down with SueAnn Shiah ~ a Taiwanese American musician, filmmaker, ethnomusicologist, community organizer, and Queer Christian pastor. Through her creative and pastoral work, SueAnn weaves together questions of faith, identity, belonging, and justice, always grounded in her deep conviction that every vocation can be an act of ministry.Together, we talk about what is psalmic in her life these days: the courage to tell the truth even when it has consequences, the importance of naming despair as faithfully as we seek joy, and the hope that even the darkest Psalms ~ like Psalm 88 ~ can hold us when no easy answers exist. SueAnn's story reminds us that faith is not about pretending everything is fine but daring to bring our full selves, our doubts and griefs included, before God.“The hope is not that things will suddenly be fixed, but that even our darkest truths are not too much for God.”This episode is an invitation to honesty, courage, and the deep hope that healing begins where truth is spoken.Featured Song:Psalm 88: God of My SalvationSet to the Irish traditional tune Bean Dubh a Ghleanna, this psalm gives voice to deep lament and longing. It is a cry from the depths, expressing sorrow, isolation, and the search for God's presence in darkness—yet still holding fast to the prayer, “O God of my salvation.”Find out more about “Summer for the Spirit” at www.kiranyoungwimberly.com/summerDownload your free guide: “7 Spiritual Practices for Wellbeing in Uncertain Times”Become a Supporting/Paid SubscriberYou'll get:* Complimentary access to the Habits for the Spirit course* Videos of the conversations in Substack* The Psalms for the Spirit Journal ebook* Invitations to future offerings for supporting subscribers throughout the yearPsalms for the Spirit is a listener-supported publication. “Habit eats willpower for breakfast.” As the apostle Paul says in Romans 7, we do the evil we don't want to do, and we don't do the good we want to do. Pastor and author John Ortberg joins Mark Labberton on Conversing to discuss his latest book Steps: A Guide to Transforming Your Life When Willpower Isn't Enough. Drawing on decades of pastoral ministry, the wisdom of the Twelve Steps, and the profound influence of Dallas Willard, Ortberg explores the limits of willpower, the gift of desperation, and the hope of genuine transformation. With humour, honesty, and depth, he reflects on why human will is insufficient, why churches struggle to embody desperation, and how communities of honesty and grace can become places of real healing. Episode Highlights “Habit eats willpower for breakfast.” “The first step is a deeply despairing step. I can't, and it feels like hell and death—and that opens people up to God.” “If you have a wimpy step one, you will have wimpy steps two through twelve.” “Desperation really is a gift.” “Failure and pain so often become helps in our meeting God.” Helpful Links and Resources Find more from John Ortberg at becomenew.com John Ortberg, Steps: A Guide to Transforming Your Life When Willpower Isn't Enough Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart Kent Dunnington, Addiction and Virtue: Beyond the Models of Disease and Choice Stephen R. Haynes, Why Can't Church Be More Like an AA Meeting? About John Ortberg John Ortberg is a pastor, speaker, and bestselling author dedicated to spiritual formation and transformation. He served as senior pastor at Menlo Church from 2003 to 2020, and has written numerous books, including The Life You've Always Wanted and Faith & Doubt. He studied at Wheaton College and Fuller Theological Seminary and has been a trustee at Fuller. His most recent book, Steps: A Guide to Transforming Your Life When Willpower Isn't Enough, reframes the Twelve Steps as a wisdom tradition for all seeking deeper life with God. Show Notes The Nature of Willpower and Habit John Ortberg reflects on Dallas Willard's framework for understanding persons. “Habit eats willpower for breakfast.” The human will is essential, but terrifically weak when confronting sin, ego, or deep habits. The Gift of Desperation and the Twelve Steps First step: “We admitted we were powerless.” “The first step is a deeply despairing step. I can't, and it feels like hell and death—and that opens people up to God.” Desperation becomes a gateway to spiritual power. “If you have a wimpy step one, you will have wimpy steps two through twelve.” Comparing church and AA Ortberg: “Desperation really is a gift.” The church often resists being a community of desperation. Honesty is not the same as desperation; both are needed for transformation. Why AA's structure works: fellowship plus program. “Failure and pain so often become helps in our meeting God.” Storytelling and Transformation Testimonies and stories at the center of AA's power. Why narrative makes meaning for human life. “Story is the essential unit of meaning for personhood.” Spiritual Practices and Confession Step 5: “Confess to God, ourselves, and one other person the exact nature of our wrongs.” John recalls confessing to a close friend: “John, I love you more right now than I've ever loved you before.” The liberating power of being fully known and loved. Addiction, Sin, and Disease The debate: is addiction a disease, a habitus, or sin? Disease language reduces shame but risks erasing agency. The overlap of sin, brokenness, and habit. The challenge of shame, judgment, and superiority in church contexts. Fellowship and Program “If you have program but not fellowship, you're dead. If you have fellowship but not program, there is no hope.” AA as a model for church life: communal honesty plus concrete practices. The gospel calls for grace-filled action, not passivity. Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment magazine and Fuller Seminary.
“God doesn't talk to me.” “I can't hear God's voice.” “I don't know what God sounds like.” Hearing from God is pivotal to the life of a Christian. Not only do we seek guidance from His Word, but we also ask Him questions about which path to take, what to do, and how He wants us to behave. We want insight into situations we find ourselves in. And we long to receive His words of love and comfort, especially when life around us is full of chaos and heartache. Yet there are times when we struggle to hear His voice, when it seems that He is silent. Why is that? I won't be able to address any and every situation that might make it harder to hear from God—at least, not all in this episode. But there is one issue in particular that I've noticed in my own life, and I bet you can recognize it in yours, too. And if we truly want to hear from God, it's something that we're going to have to address. So what is it? What can prevent us from hearing from God? You don't expect to. Let's take a few minutes and unpack this idea together. Prayer is such an integral part of our knowledge of God. We can go to Him in confidence, asking, seeing and knocking. Because, by His very nature and name, he is honor bound to give us more of Himself... Father Son, and Holy Spirit. Whatever we are praying for or about, it is more about God's provision than our own persistence.
The Importance of shared spiritual practices

Ancient civilizations achieved things that still mystify us today - from the precision of the pyramids to the astronomical knowledge of the Mayans. But beyond their architectural and scientific achievements, they possessed sophisticated understanding of consciousness and reality creation that we're only beginning to rediscover. When we examine ancient cultures across the globe - civilizations that had no contact with each other - we find remarkably similar approaches to working with consciousness and intention. The Egyptians had their concept of Heka, the power of authoritative speech. Halfway around the world, Hindu traditions developed yantra science, using sacred geometry to focus consciousness. In Tibet, practitioners refined dream yoga techniques for working with reality through altered states. The ancient Greeks created mystery school initiations that transformed consciousness through symbolic death and rebirth experiences. In the episode we're going to dive deep into six specific ancient approaches that each offer unique perspectives on working with consciousness and intention. We'll explore Egyptian Heka and how the ancients used sound and sacred speech to influence reality. We'll examine Greek Mystery School techniques that used archetypal visualization and symbolic transformation. We'll investigate Tibetan Dream Yoga and how practitioners learned to manifest through dream states. We'll uncover Sumerian mathematical approaches that treated manifestation as a precise science with numerical formulas and geometric patterns. We'll also discover Celtic Ogham practices that worked with tree consciousness and natural energies, and Hindu Yantra science that created sacred geometric patterns as manifestation technologies. Throughout our exploration, we'll understand not just what these ancient practitioners did, but how these methods work on both psychological and energetic levels, and most importantly, how they can enhance your practice today. Each of these traditions developed over hundreds or thousands of years, refined by countless practitioners who discovered what worked and what didn't. They offer us insights into different aspects of consciousness that can complement and amplify the techniques you're already using successfully.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is a leading voice in modern faith leadership and the first woman elected to serve as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, a role she's held since 2011. While the job isn't always glamorous, she says, the sacred moments in the public eye matter deeply—and she treats them with care. Bishop Budde gained national attention for boldly speaking out against the Trump administration, including condemning the 2020 photo-op at St. John's Episcopal Church and, more recently, offering a prayer for LGBTQ+ justice with President Trump and Vice President Vance seated before her. Her calm, courageous leadership has made her one of the most trusted voices in public faith today. In this conversation with Jen, Bishop Budde shares her journey from a small Minnesota congregation to the national stage—and how she finds the courage to speak truth to power and stand with the marginalized, even when the cost is high. Thought-provoking Quotes: “I think, in some ways, vocations choose you as much as you choose them.” – Mariann Edgar Budde “It's not as if the world stopped on January 21st. So much is happening every single day and there are consequences to the decisions being made.” – Mariann Edgar Budde “I wouldn't have chosen the way they're going, but a lot is being dismantled right now and we've got to be there to help rebuild.” – Mariann Edgar Budde Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Raygun: Bishop Budde Fan Club T-Shirt - https://www.raygunsite.com/products/bishop-budde-fan-club Receiving Jesus: The Way of Love by Mariann Edgar Budde - https://amzn.to/45GO5jh How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith by Mariann Edgar Budde - https://amzn.to/4kbZtan Sermon by The Right Rev.
