Karma, in the sense of action is normally done for one four reasons, according to Kunda Guruji : phalApEkSa : a desire for results/benefits. rAga dvESa : emotions like fondness and hatred sanga : attachment ahankAra : the sense of doership (I am the doer). Absence of these reasons – leads to karmayoga. There are 3 kinds of karmacOdana – motives (drivers) for karma according to Bhagavad Gita : Chapter 18. Knowledge or gnyAna That which is to be known – gnyEyam The knower – parignyAta Recovered from : http://ancientindians.in/bhagavadgita/karma/ To register for classes, to donate, to sponsor or to become a Patron please leave a comment, I will respond. Recovered from : http://ancientindians.in/bhagavadgita/karma/ General (Popular) Understanding : Every action has it consequences. The consequences of one's actions are often called “karmaphala”. Typically, good karma is puNyam and leads to benefits; bad karma is pāpam and it leads to hardship. When unpredictable bad things happen, Hindus attribute it to their bad karma, either from this life or from a previous life. Pious Hindus like to earn Punyam by doing good deeds and wash off their Papam through charity, penance, rituals and prayer. Sometimes it is hard to decide what is a good deed and what is a bad deed. The thought of Karma can paralyze pious people into inaction or remove their motivation to work. Krishna taught that if you do your duty, established in Yoga, not motivated by results, then Karma will not stick to you. Even though we focus on accuracy in chanting, there are sometimes some slips and errors. In these ślōkas we seek forgiveness (kšamā) for errors in our practice, sādhana, ācāra for whatever reason. If there is a bhrashTa (falling, failing) of a letter, word, mātra (duration), then we are to be forgiven, oh nārāyańa! I don't know (proper) invitation, pūjā or send-off, forgive my errors. I have no refuge other than you, so please forgive me, out of compassion, oh paramēśwara. Gone are my sins, my sorrow, my poverty. Happiness and wealth are coming in, because of your purifying darśana (vision). A darśana can be in a temple, pūjā room or in our minds. This is navagrahanamana. In this ślōkam, the namah (manah) is for sūrya, candra, mangala, budha, guru, śukra, śani, rāhu and kētu. They are the kārakas for the Self, Mind, Conflict, Learning, Wisdom, Comfort, Work, Illusion and Freedom, in that order, respectively. Some Notes. A graha is any celestial body or point with a gravitational (or other) grip. It derives from gR to grasp or hold. A chāya graha or a shadowy graha has some effects, often related to it's location. The two mentioned in this ślōkam are the moon's nodes, rāhu and kētu. These are described with mathematical accuracy in the surya siddhanta of maya dānava for astronomers, as well as other astrological siddhāntās and vēdānga jyotiša. They are imaginatively described in various purāńas in an encoded format, for lay people. Since the chāya grahas are related to eclipses and alignments, their effects are experienced differently. This upanišad contains the mahāvakyam so-ahamasmi. It is both a vēda and an upanišad. You can also buy my eBook or Print Book on Pothi.com Is'A vAsya upaniSad (Isa Upanishad) EXCERPT : Peace Invocation : s'Anti mantram AUM pUrNamadah pUrNamidam pUrNat pUrNamudacyatE | pUrNasya pUrNamAdAya pUrNamEvAvas'iSyatE.||0|| AUM s'Antih, s'Antih, s'Antih. Every Upanishad begins with an invocation for inner peace. We do not wish to be disturbed by causes internal, external or divine. Aum – is the divine sound and represents the brahman. purnam adah – that is complete purnam idam – this is complete purnat purnamudachyate – completeness arises from completeness purnasya purnamadaya – having taken completeness from completeness purnameva avasishyate – only completeness remains. AUM, this is complete and that is complete. From completeness, completeness arises. Having taken the completeness of completeness, only completeness remains. What do the words this and that refer to? ‘This' is all that we see. ‘That' is the Brahman, the great, the divine, the perfect. All ‘this' came from ‘that'. From perfection – only perfection can arise. That means that all that we see is also perfect. It is also complete. We normally think that when you take something out of something else there is less of the original stuff to go around. However when you look at the infinity concept in mathematics you can see that subtracting infinity from infinity leaves infinity. Similarly when a perfect world emerges from a perfect being, or a complete world is taken from a complete being, the original being is still perfect and complete. When a perfect child is born of a perfect mother, the mother is still perfect and complete. If you look at the world around you and look at it as imperfect and incomplete – you will not have inner peace or santhi. Without inner peace you cannot think, contemplate or meditate and understand the truth. So first let us accept that the world around us is pURNa since it comes from that perfect complete divine Brahman. And perfection can only give rise to perfection. These 8 slōkas which offer namah (manah) to the Sun, sūrya, were spoken by śiva. At the end there is a phalaśRti. This tells of the fruit of constantly (daily) chanting the suryashtakam. The chanter will not have disease, sorrow or poverty. All the pain due to grahas will be destroyed. One without sons will beget sons. A poor man will become wealthy. It also states that there are also negative consequences of some actions – a person who eats meat or drinks alcohol on Sundays will be ill for seven lifetimes and be poor, birth after birth. Whereas a person who practices celibacy, gives up oil (massage?), alcohol and meat on Sundays, will not fall ill and will not be poor or sorrowful. He will go to the sūryalōka (after death). The essence is that if someone practices austerities on Sunday, and worships the Sun daily, they will have children, wealth, good health and happiness. That dēvī, who is well-established, in all the lōkas (worlds) and in all beings, for her namah, for her namah, for her namah, namah, namah. There are many variants of this ślōkam. I have often prescribed this stuti to people who show effects of rāhu's illusory influence. And they have reported good relief. This s'lōka is an offering. namah is variously translated. Two of my favorite translations are na mama (not mine) and manah (using yāskas's rule of reversal). So the essence would be, “My manas (mind) is for Her who is in everything.” Or, ” Not mine, but for Her who is in everything. “ To register for classes, to donate, to sponsor or to become a Patron please leave a comment, I will respond. My present understanding is that ङ्गं sound at the end of each line helps us with our sahasrāra cakra. In addition, this namana, destroys all the pain of birth, pride, accumulated total sins, 8 kinds of daridra and burns desire. This is a prayer or prārthana. The son of mRkanDu mahaRši, mārkanDēya created this stavam. It is found in māgha māhātmya. He prays to candraśēkhara, to save him. He takes refuge in candraśēkhara and says what can yama do? The phalaśRti says that whenever anyone feels scared of death, they can read/chant this stavam, and they will live their whole life, without disease, with all kinds of wealth and respect. And that śiva will grant them mukti (mōkša) without even trying. To register for classes, to donate, or to sponsor please leave a comment, I will respond.
