Lalit Sritara is the first Thai wordsperson in the NYU Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program and a recipient of the Horace W. Goldsmith Fellowship, the Summer Song Theater Festival Artist Development Grant, the TYA/USA Festival and Conference Access for All Support Grant and the Maestra Musical Writers Festival Scholarship.Born in Bangkok, emotionally raised by musicals and softly indoctrinated in England, she writes songs that turn real life into musical theatre (because it should be), made for whimsical souls with too many feelings who need to giggle through the mess. She has a soft spot for psychological adventures. She and Taylor Wendell Lozano recently released "Feral," a theatre-pop song sung by a princess and a feral creature. Based on a true story, the song is full of chaos, cheekiness and unresolved trust issues. Is it about a man-child or an actual animal? You decide! The song has been added to Musical Theatre Radio's rotation and featured on Earmilk. You can find this and her other works on Instagram, YouTube and Spotify.

We're starting off spooky season with one of the most haunting cases in true crime history. This case, referred to internationally as “The Burari Deaths” walks the thin line between devotion and madness, faith and delusion, mortal and paranormal. At 7:15 AM on July 1st, 2018 Gurcharan Singh went outside to meet his neighbor, Lalit Chundawat, for their morning walk. That morning however, Lalit was not waiting for him. The normally bustling Chundawat household and general store stood dark and quiet. Realizing that something must be terribly wrong Gurcharan entered the Chundawat's house to see if they needed help, and what he found was nothing short of a nightmare. Ten people, including Lalit Chundawat, were hanging from the ceiling in the livng room. The Chundawat family had been wiped out in one fell, silent swoop as their neighbors slept peacefully. This case begs us to examine how one person, everyone and no one were all to blame for the deaths of eleven people in one fell swoop. Many people are concerned that AI is at present Conscious or will become Conscious at some point. And if so, will they turn then on their human overlords? Or worse, they might remain calm and continue to be helpful at which point we would have on our hands a huge ethical issue: forcing intelligent beings to do slave-like work without any compensation or protection? The problem with most conversations about AI and consciousness is that most of us them are premised on a very poor understanding of Consciousness, founded upon very shaky and outdated materialist reductionist foundations. So I thought let's just set the record straight by offering a few perspectives from Sāmkhya, Advaita Vedanta and Tantra to answer this most pressing of questions! On this very auspicious day of Raksha Bandhana, the day when we honor our brothers and sisters and siblings, I want to firstly say to each and every one of you, you who are my dear brothers, sisters, siblings: I love you immeasurably!Thank you.No words will express my reverence to you, you who are Goddess embodied!May all my words be so many flowers offered in devotion and surrender at your lotus feet!May these words be themselves like the thread that I wrap around your wrists! (Because today many siblings and friends will be tying a thread or amulet around each other's wrists to signify their bond and mutual protection of one another!)Also today's pūrnimā (full moon) is Hayagrīva Jayanti, when we celebrate that divine emanation of Godhead with the horse's head who returned the Vedas after they were stolen (I.e who revived the Vedas with his Tantrik transmission) and who revealed the secret names of Lalitāmbika to the sage Agastya in the Brahmananda Purana! He is the Tantrik Guru par excellence and so today, in the name of discussing the subtlest and most esoteric of Tantrik doctrines, I want to explore what I consider to be among the most profound ideas expressed which we find in aphorism in Vasugupta's Śiva Sūtra: drśyam śarīram, “the entire universe is your body.”We have been exploring Tantrik subtle anatomy together for some weeks now, discussing nādis, cakras, prāna, Kundalinī etc. But in the background of all of this is this profoundly radical notion of embodiment, a metaphysical claim about the true nature of our essential being that once heard, can grant enlightenment immediately! It is precisely this claim that we will explore today. But you know, I noticed there was a very thrilling discussion in the Discord the other night about Artifical Intelligence and its role in spiritual communities! Amanda Mā suggested I say something about Consciousness and AI and since I can never refuse her (especially not on Raksha Bandhana!) I've decided to name tonight's talk “is AI Conscious?” In answering this question from the Tantrik point of view, we can explore the aforementioned aphorism, drśyam śarīram!Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST, Friday 10am PST and again Friday 6pm PST. There's Q&A right after the lectre. It is free and open to the public. As we study the Paramārthsāra of Abhinava Gupta, a wonderful introductory work on the foundational metaphysics of the Svatantrya Vada (Kashmir Shaivai) system, I felt it would be good to ground ourselves in the other schools of Indian philosophy like Nyāya, Vaisheshika, Sāmkhya, Yoga and Mimāmsa in Purva and Uttara forms as well as Buddhist and Jain schools which were popular at the time when Abhinava Gupta was composing his work so we could really feel into the context in which this profound spiritual tradition has its being. Having already studied Sāmkhya at some length in previous classes, I intended to take up the classical Yoga system of Patañjali in today's class. But then I realized that when we say "yoga", these days, what comes to mind is "modern postural yoga" which has much more to do with the Post Classical Tantrik tradition known as Hatha Yoga founded by the Nath sampradaya than it does with Patañjali's tradition. So I took the opportunity to discuss just how Hatha Yoga fits into the Tantrik world and how it creates our modern understanding of yoga in an attempt to compare and contrast the two different uses of the word "yoga". We talk a little bit at the end about Swami Vivekananda's seminal "Raja Yoga" which I argue is, although certainly a commentary on the Yoga Sūtra, a more syncretic text dealing with Advaita Vedanta and Tantrik Shaivism than with Yoga proper, as per Patañjali's transmission. And also since today is the auspicious day of Varalakshmī Vratam, I thought it would be good to go over the Kamalā Devī Dhyāna mantra: न्त्या काञ्चनसन्निभां हिमगिरिप्रख्यैश्चतुर्भिर्गजैर्हस्तोत्क्षिप्तहिरण्मयामृतघटैरासिच्यमानां श्रियम् ॥विभ्राणं वरमब्जयुग्ममभयं हस्तैः किरीटोज्ज्वलां ।क्षोमाबद्धनितम्बबिम्बललितां वन्देऽरविन्दस्थिताम् ॥kāntyā kāñcanasannibhāṃ himagiriprakhyaiścaturbhirgajairhastotkṣiptahiraṇmayāmṛtaghaṭairāsicyamānāṃ śriyam ॥vibhrāṇaṃ varamabjayugmamabhayaṃ hastaiḥ kirīṭojjvalāṃ ।kṣomābaddhanitambabimbalalitāṃ vande'ravindasthitām ॥Beautiful like gold, bathed by the golden nectar poured from four pitchers from the four trunks of four elephants, she is the Goddess Srī who holds a pair of lotuses in her two hands and with her other two hands shows the vara (boon giving) and the abhaya (fearlessness) mūdras whose head is shining with the splendour of a bejeweled crown whose lovely round hips are raimented in linen/silk...I worship that Lalitā, that playful Goddess who abides in the lotus. The full transcript of this episode is available here. You've probably heard of Groww. It is a financial services platform, last valued at $3 billion. This year, the Groww team travelled to a bunch of tier-2 and tier-3 cities in South India to talk to users of its products. In fact, so far, they've been to 100 such cities. In this conversation with Rohin, Lalit—the co-founder and CEO of Groww—describes what typically happens during these visits.Take a city like Indore, for example. Hundreds of Groww users travel really long distances just to talk to the Groww team. They want to know things like how to use the app for something as simple as investing in an SIP that has actually changed their lives.Lalit tells Rohin how the same people have told so many of their friends and family members about Groww. They're excited, grateful and most importantly, emotional, says Lalit. And then he says there's just one word that can describe what's happening between Groww and its users…and it is love.Love for customers, love for the product, and love for good financial services…You'll see how this is a recurring theme in this conversation. Customers are at the centre of Groww. Customer obsession, Lalit says, with no uncertainty, is the thing that will make an employee succeed at Groww.Lalit is a man who is sure of many things—like he's good at hiring or how to build an effective direct-to-consumer product. He knows the first principles for solving complex problems like the back of his hand. And what he's unsure of, he's not too worried about. He tells Rohin how he was raised in a way that makes him a bit different from other founders.Everything will pass, he says. Every problem will be solved. And he explains how this keeps him going, keeps Groww going. In his stoic, cool manner, he goes on to talk about:Why financial services is a basic necessityHow to create delight with your productUnderstanding the difference between what your customer wants and what they will useWhy "discipline is overrated"A simple process that Lalit uses to hire the right people_____________Chapters: 03:01 - What we talk about when we talk about financial services07:19 - Democratising financial services09:41 - Supply and demand of financial services10:51 - How Groww grew 16:33 - How to find future customers today?20:09 - The one metric Groww watches22:21 - What customers say is not what customers do30:37 - What makes people love a financial services brand?35:16 - Lalit's career ladder40:08 - The seeds for Groww46:31 - “Not old & wise enough to give advice, but if there was one thing…”53:14 - Cracking delayed monetisation55:28 - The only thing that guides Groww1:02:31 - “Discipline is overrated”1:05:38 - A simple process to hire the right people1:08:23 - What does Lalit read?1:14:36 - A weekday in Lalit's life1:16:25 - What kind of people succeed at Groww?_____________Also, tune in to the latest episode of Daybreak—The Ken's podcast which breaks down one significant business story thrice a week—to learn about the talent exodus at Niti Aayog on Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts! The Ken is India's first subscriber-only business journalism platform. The reading down of Section 377 by the Supreme Court in 2018 has led to a fundamental shift in the rights of India's LGBTQ citizens and necessitated policy changes across the board—not least in the conservative world of Indian business. In his path-breaking and genre-defying book, Parmesh Shahani—Vice President at Godrej Industries Ltd—draws from his decade-long journey in the corporate world as an out and proud gay man, to make a cogent case for LGBTQ inclusion and lay down a step-by-step guide to reshaping office culture in India. He talks to inclusion champions and business leaders about how they worked towards change; traces the benefits reaped by industry giants like Godrej, Tata Steel, IBM, Wipro, the Lalit group of hotels and many others who have tapped into the power of diversity; and shares the stories of employees whose lives were revolutionised by LGBTQ-friendly workspaces. In this episode of BIC Talks Parmesh is in conversation with journalist Shrabonti Bagchi. This session was originally part of Bangalore Literature Festival 2022. Today we have Dr. Keshavchaitanya Kunte with us on Audiogyan. He is a Harmonium player, composer, and musicologist. Keshavchaitanya Sir received extensive training in Hindustani Art music, for Harmonium under the able guidance of Dr. Arawind Thatte. For vocal music from Pt. Mohanrao Karve and Dr. Ashok Da. Ranade for musicology. We'll try to document Keshavchaitanya Sir's thoughts on parampara (tradition) and paddhati (methodology) in the context of Hindustani Music. Just as a disclaimer, these subjects are studies of a lifetime and it's almost impossible to pack in an hour or so… Please consider these as conversation starters. Also before we begin, a special thanks to Dakshina Dwarka Foundation and Baithak Foundation for introducing me to Chaitanya sir. I met him at a workshop organized in Pune in 2022 on Talking with Tradition. This Audiogyan will be in Marathi and English Questions What according to you is Prampara and Paddhati? I know these are 2 massive subjects but just a brief introduction will help. What are the main 5 categories of Indian music? (That Dr. Ashok Ranade spoke about) Do all of them have paddhati? Seems like all music will have paddhati but does all of them have parampara? How do you define parampara in Music? In classical music, you are supposed to undergo rigorous training to master what? Paddhati? When and how are you allowed to experiment? In the music world, we hear this often, “The Lalit that morning by Aamir Khan will be etched in the heart for life”. What is the significance of time and place in this context? Which aspect of parampara and which aspect of paddhati keep the relationship? What according to you is the difference between “Shastrokta sangeet” and “Shastriya sangeet”?
