Discovering Creativity: An Intimate Conversation with Scott EricksonWhat does it mean to live a creative life? Is creativity a talent, or is it an innate intelligence that we all possess? In this week's episode of The Creative Genius Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the remarkable artist and storyteller, Scott Erickson, to explore these questions and so much more. Scott's journey as an artist has been deeply influenced by his unique experience with aphantasia—a condition where one cannot visualize images in their mind's eye—and he opens up about how this has shaped his creative expression.Together, we delve into the haunting nature of creativity, the role of pain in transforming life into art, and the importance of emotional intelligence in understanding the human experience. Scott's reflections on gratitude, surrender, and navigating the inner voice will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with self-doubt or felt overwhelmed by the weight of their creative aspirations. But more than that, this conversation serves as a gentle reminder that creativity is not a linear journey. It's messy, it's beautiful, and it's deeply human. Scott's raw honesty will inspire you to listen more closely to your inner voice and trust that, even in the chaos, there's a path to something beautiful.

9/22/24 - Dr. Jacobs Discusses What Success and Failure Are by Dr. Andrew Jacobs
In this episode, we talk with Bob Weis, the former President of the legendary Imagineering division at Disney and author of the new book, Dream Chasing: My Four Decades of Success and Failure with Walt Disney Imagineering. If you've been to a Disney theme park, resort, or cruise ship recently, you've experienced Weis' work. He has helped design theme parks in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Orlando, and he also had a hand in rethinking the California Adventure theme park in Anaheim after it got off to a rough start. We talk about the origins of Imagineering under Walt Disney; why it's important that it's not located at Disney's HQ campus; how they've worked with different Disney CEOs; how Weis views competition; his work outside Disney as a consultant; and a whole lot more. Weis will be sharing his perspective on creativity and innovation at InnoLead's Impact conference in Boston this October.

Shaun's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and adaptability. He shares how he navigated the ups and downs of his career, from losing a promising internship during the dotcom crash to building and selling successful businesses. His candid reflections on past mistakes and learning experiences offer valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs. The episode dives into the entrepreneurial journey of Shaun Clark, CEO and co-founder of HighLevel Software, as we explore Shaun's path from his early ventures to the creation of HighLevel, a CRM and marketing automation platform. Shaun discusses how they identified an underserved market - marketing agencies - and built a solution tailored to their needs. He emphasizes the importance of listening to customers and letting them drive product development, a strategy that has been key to HighLevel's success. In this episode, we'll cover: Adaptability is crucial: Shaun's success came from pivoting when initial ideas didn't work, always being open to new opportunities. Customer-driven development: HighLevel's growth is attributed to closely listening to customers and building features they actually need. Strategic investment: Even when profitable, taking on outside investment can provide valuable expertise and position a company for future growth. Maintain company culture: As the company grew, Shaun found it better to nurture existing talent rather than always bringing in experienced outsiders who might not fit the culture. Empowering others: Shaun finds fulfillment in helping small businesses and entrepreneurs achieve their goals, which drives HighLevel's mission. For listeners interested in entrepreneurship, software development, or building customer-centric businesses, this episode offers a wealth of practical advice and inspiration. Whether you're just starting out or looking to scale your business, Shaun Clark's journey and insights provide valuable food for thought. If he wasn't an expert in how to handle success and failure before 2023, Florida State Head Football Coach Mike Norvell knows now. His FSU team finished the regular season a perfect 13-0, was passed over for a College Football Playoff appearance, and lost big in its bowl game, playing without its injured Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback. The disappointing end to a special season led Norvell to give one of the most inspired locker room speeches of the season. “I told you since the very first day that I came here: hard work does not guarantee success,” he told his Seminoles players after losing 63-3 to Georgia. “It doesn't and it never will. But it absolutely will put you in the best position to achieve it.”Mike sat down with Ted Lowe and Family First President Mark Merrill to talk about how the highs and lows of coaching a nationally prominent college football program mirrors the challenges of parenting his 10-year-old daughter. The conversation will lead dads to think through navigating both good and bad moments with their kids in a way that helps them keep their eyes fixed on the process, not the problems. Things to keep in mind when parenting through success:1. Tell kids to stay humble.2. Encourage them to keep working at being their best.3. Encourage sharing success with others.4. Teach kids where our real value comes from.5. Remind your kids to be thankful.Things to keep in mind when parenting through failure:1. Not everyone gets a trophy.2. Everyone has different talents.3. It's important to have class.4. Learn from your mistakes.5. We all fail. It's part of being human. But that does not mean we are stuck with our failures. The Lord uses the failures we encounter to help us grow and eventually arrive at spiritual success. This Sunday we'll explore what failure really means, and how we can see it differently.
What does success mean? All of us will have our own definition, and in fact that definition will change as we grow and change as individuals. But at the heart of success is service to others. When that is at the forefront of what it means to live a successful life, all of our other priorities and ideas of success can fall into place.

[00:54:48] Flow state in wrestling. [00:57:32] Freedom of speech and censorship. [01:02:04] Foster care system reform. [01:06:55] The ring of fire. Quotes: "No, fighting gets you into fighting shape. That's why you see these little guys knocking out these big dudes, not because they're stronger than them. They just actually know how to fight. Shit's about to go down." "I am Zion Clark in Big Z, but I'm also the world's fastest man on two hands, three-time world record holder. I'm also multiple-time All-American at Kent State University." "Because it's truth. Exactly. And truth, a universal truth I would call it. Universal truth always shows up no matter where you go, no matter what language they're speaking. The truth is the freaking truth, right?" "Yeah, you get the money from the foster care system, then you get the government-assisted money. So you're a big ticket out of it. You make more money. I was a motherfucking piggy bank." "I'm regular, yeah, regular food. Dude, I went to the national championships, and the morning that I placed, I had eight soft potato soft tacos from Taco Bell." "I call it the ring of fire. I think there are the universe, God, call it what you want, is prepared to give us our dreams, but it never just gives them to you right away. It wants to say to you, you really want this? Yeah, I really want this. Okay, I'm gonna make you suffer for just a little while, because I want to make sure it's not talking shit." "Dude, I lost for years on end, bro. But it was really like... You gotta just learn from your mistakes. And so I just kept coming back and I kept getting my ass kicked and I just kept going back and kept getting my ass kicked." "Thank you for fucking leaning into life and just taking advantage of all the gifts it has given you and crushing and being an inspiration to so many." What is success, and what is failure? Why are we so focused on both? How do we succeed and fail? Does success bring us happiness? When we are dying, it is not about success or failure. We have to stop the comparison. Let's explore what success is in different countries and how success is so different in so many places for so many people. What is success for you? When you are dying what will success be for you? In the end, it's not about what we have, but rather those that we've loved and how we have loved. Steve Jobs said, I have succeeded, and it doesn't matter; it's about our loved ones, how we have loved, and how we have shown up. Success is getting what we want, happiness is liking or not judging what you have. What are we pursuing and why? We have to stop the comparison. Success is getting what you want, happiness is liking what you have. Ingrid Bergman
