We discuss how the battlefield is symbolic of the challenges people face in the world. Dr. Brown describes how to go inward to the field of unity in order to transcend these conflicts.Next, we consider this act of transcending as the essence of the Bhagavad Gita, and the practice of Transcendental Meditation as a pathway for avoiding war. Sue describes Chapter 2, Verses 45 and 48 as master keys to unlocking the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita. We discuss the events of the Gita in the broader context of the Mahabharata in which they take place.From there, Dr. Brown explains how Maharishi's commentary differs from those of other sages throughout the ages. We consider the universal field of consciousness, which our individual brains reflect. We discuss how Krishna helps Arjuna navigate the conflict between his heart and mind, between the collective consciousness demands for him to defend his people while also having compassion for the family members on the opposing force whom he must kill. Dr. Brown and I discuss how the human dilemmas captured in the Bhagavad Gita are universal issues, encountered throughout the ages.Next, we consider Samkhya (theoretical) and Yoga (practical) knowledge contained in the Gita. We discuss how Arjuna reconciles the sin of murder and war with the transcendental forces of collective consciousness. We consider the time period of the Bhagavad Gita, and the similarities with our current Kali Yuga – an age of stress. We discuss the opportunity we currently have to usher in Satya Yuga, a time of construction and creativity.From there, we dive into Chapter 3 and ideas of Yagya, Dharma, Karma Yoga, the path of action, and Gyana Yoga, the path of knowledge. We discuss why the danger of following another's dharma is more dangerous than death. We then discuss Chapter 4 and how action and renunciation of action are two sides of the same coin. We consider misinterpretations of the Gita, including those who view renunciation/detachment as a necessary state of life, rather than as a state of consciousness. We consider the rise and fall of knowledge throughout time.Dr. Brown explains why Maharishi chose to emphasize his teachings on the practical effect of enlightenment, not just the theoretical knowledge. We discuss the four pillars of Yoga – Raja, Karma, Bhakti and Gyana Yoga, and the concept of Moksha, or liberation. We consider how action in accordance with natural law leads to spontaneous right action, and how the path of enlightenment is one of effortlessness and bliss.We then discuss Krishna's final words to Arjuna in Chapter 6, his guidance: “Therefore, be a Yogi.”. Compassion is one of the features of Advaita Ācārya, and also this idea of servitude towards the Lord, where he declares, "caitanyera dāsa muñi, caitanyera dāsa," (CC Adi 6.86) that "I am a servant of Lord Caitanya. I'm the servant of Lord Caitanya. I'm the servant of Lord Caitanya. I am the servant of the servants." And this is the foundation for perfection in spiritual life—that is, to come to this position of being a servitor. Fortunately, we have Chaitanya Mahāprabhu to worship in this mood of servitorship. And there's nobody better than Lord Caitanya. He's Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa combined. Kavirāja Gosvāmī said he's the Deity of the paramahaṁsas. So if we engage ourselves in His service and emulate the mood of Advaita Ācārya, which was showing compassion to the living entities in Kali Yuga, helping to spread the saṅkīrtana movement, then through that method given to us by Advaita Ācārya, we can attain the perfection of devotional service. So Bhaktivinod Ṭhākur had come to see the Siddha Mahātmā and received many important instructions from him. Around those instructions for worshiping Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu in the age of Kali Yuga, he passed them on to his followers and disciples. Therefore, this particular place is our home. Home is where the heart is. The mood of bhakti that we've received through our disciplic succession, and continue to receive today, comes from the great souls, and very specifically, Jagannāth Dās Bābājī Mahārāj, who gave us this strong emphasis on worshiping Nityānanda and Gaurāṅga in the Age of Kali. In order to come to the perfection of life, not to approach Kṛṣṇa directly, but to go through the mercy of Lord Caitanya. But as he said, when he landed or arrived in Boston, New York, after a long, arduous journey with two heart attacks and, later on, several strokes as well, he said that the reason my mission in the West was successful is because I had faith in two things. This is very important for us because we want to become like Śrīla Prabhupāda, not that we can become Śrīla Prabhupāda, but follow in his footsteps. He said, 'I had faith in two things.' This is why his mission was successful and continues to expand over the next 10,000 years with the movement of saṅkīrtana, the movement of Lord Caitanya, the Golden Age of Kali Yuga. He said, 'I had faith in two things, the instructions of my spiritual master, and the chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare, Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.' Now it's all history. We tend to think back and look at how Prabhupāda boarded the ship. He went across the ocean. The captain said he'd never seen the Atlantic Ocean so calm in his whole life as a sailor. But Prabhupāda endured extremely difficult circumstances. Again, he had heart attacks. It was a long journey. I can't imagine what he had to eat when he arrived in America. He said, 'I did not know whether to go left or right.' He actually endured great difficulties, and it must have been very painful. At the same time, he relished the opportunity challenge, to spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the Western world and begin to fulfill the prediction of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the previous Ācāryas, and his own Guru, Maharaja Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura. So, we should take inspiration from that, that there's no challenge that we can't overcome. Prabhupāda is an Ācārya. Kṛṣṇa could have arranged for him to arrive in America in a flower airplane, but he's an ācārya. He teaches by example. 'Struggle for existence'—the human race, the only hope is divine grace. We also have the challenge to go out and distribute books, establish Kṛṣṇa conscious communities, and hold festivals in the world of Māyā, Yavana-deśa, and Mleccha-deśa. We can take strength from Śrīla Prabhupāda's example, that although it seemed almost impossible, an elderly gentleman, a sādhu, let us say, around my age, fearlessly boarded the ship and went to the West.
