Sri Krishna Prem: A Wing and a Prayer is an in-depth, spiritual biography of a British fighter pilot (WW I), Ronald Nixon (1898-1965). Raised in an intellectually vibrant family, educated at Cambridge, he had a religious experience during one of his flights as a RAF pilot, and when the war ended, he embarked on a religious/philosophical journey that carried him to India, first as a university professor, and then into the religious world of his mentors, the university's vice-chancellor, G.N. Chakravarti and his wife, Monica (Yashoda Mai). Initiated by Yashoda Mai, he joined a movement celebrating the 16th century saint and reformer, Sri Krishna Chaitanya (1486-1533) and helped establish the still-functioning Mirtola ashram. Along the way he studied Theosophy and Buddhism and towards the end of his life developed a philosophy of his own that, though based on the religious traditions and philosophies he practiced and studied, was more universal in scope than the traditions he was formally connected with. Chapple's deep research succeeds in introducing readers to a wide cast of historically important religious figures, often with "warts and all." Learn more about your ad choices. Having explored the philosophy and lift of Sri Krishna Chaitanya, the incarnation of Rādhā and Krsna in one body, it is now time to turn to something very important: the practices! In this class, we do a quick overview of the various aspects of Bhakti sādhanā, the Path of Devotion. Incidentally, we happened to do this class around this time last year in Lafayette in Caitanya Devī and Sumeru-ji's house, just around the time they were moving in! How wonderful to have returned to their beautiful abode earlier this year for our Spring retreat/ Guhyeśvarī Kālī installation ceremony! Thank you for hosting us all, you two, and for being such powerful example of true Bhakti! Jai Gaur! Jai Nitai! Jai Radhakrshna! Here is our playlist on all things Tantrik Vaishnavism! Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show
Having explored the philosophy and life of Sri Krishna Chaitanya, and having outlined Bhakti in practice as part of last year's Gaur Purnima (Chaitanya Jayanti) celebration, we now turn to some more specialized themes in our study of Tantrik Vaishnavism beginning with some dhyāna mantras (meditation and visualization techniques) for Krishna and Rādhā Rāni! Here is some of what we shared in the talk:“I meditate on the golden hued Gauranga whose beautiful hair is bound by a string of pearls whose moonlike face beams a gentle smile his body is smeared with sandalwood and other fragrant pastes and a beautiful cloth who is garlanded and ornamented in a divine way. Asborbed in dancing, he delights in rasa (the sweetness of devotion/chanting the name). He shines brighter than the Cupid (kandarpa-veśojvallam) and is attended to by His devotees.” Brahma Samhita:A great hexagonal yantra in which the Kāma-bīja is the diamond peg in the center, accompanied by Rādha and Krishna surrounded by the Krishna mantra, the 18 syllabled Gopāla mantra and then the Kāma gāyatrī surrounded by the ashta-manjaris and beyond the petals the abode of the sakis… “evambhūta yoga-pīthe srī srī rādhā-krshnau smaret”...”mīlitam bhāti mudritam” it blooms and contracts through the desire of rādhā-krishna-līla-rasa (the bliss of the union of Rādhā and Krishna) dhyayed vrndāvane ramye gopa-gobhir alankrte kadamba pādapacchāye yamuna jala śitalerādhaya sahitam krshnam vamśī vādana tat param tribhanga lalitam devam bhaktānugraha kārakam “Krishna plays in the cool waters of the Yamuna, rests in the shade of the Kadamba tree in Vrndāvan. He is surrounded by cows and milkmen/milkmaids and is with Srī Rādha. He stands playfully with three bends and plays the flute, blessing us with the gift of devotion! From svayambhuvāgama: Kāmadevāya vidmahe pushpa-bānāya dhīmahi Tan no'nanga pracodayāt From Gaurī Tantra“I mediate on Rādhā who is shining red (sphurad-aruna) with a smiling lotus mouth, dressed in crimson, the border of her cloth is her veil, from the braids in her hair a lotus flower dangles, and with her thumb and forefinger she offers a tambulam into the mouth of Sri Krishna. She has beautiful long ears and eyes and she is filled with honey, the sweetest in all the three worlds!” Śrī-rādhikayai vidmahe prema-rūpāyai dhīmahi tanno rādha pracodayāt Here is our playlist on all things Tantrik Vaishnavism! This is very well known story of Sri Krishna. Once Indra was proud of being the provider of rain and thought he deserves the special yagam and pooja offered by the Vrundavan people. But Krishna felt Indra needs to know that every Devatha has a duty and they inturn are controlled by mone other than Sri Vishnu. Krishna requested Nandagopa to offer the pooja to Govardhan Giri as it is the mountain with dense forests which provides rain harnessing the rain bearing clouds .. people accordingly offered pooja to the Govardhan mountain. Indra became angry and heavy downpour of rain started and last for 7 days. What happened later? Let's find out along with Bhamathi a five year old ardent fan of Kadhai neram. It was a great pleasure to interact with her while narrating the story. I am sure you all will enjoy the narration. This is Rajee patti telling you stories. Hariom.

In this talk, we discuss a very subtle, high-level and easily misunderstood mode of spiritual practice: madhura bhāva, the practice of seeing God as your lover! In Vaishnava literature this is considered the highest mood because it contains all the others and is itself the most refined and passionate of the moods. The whole soul goes to God in fiery yearning! There is actually quite a precedent for this in the Christian tradition. It's called "bridal mysticism." Nuns in the Catholic faith see themselves, in some orders, as "brides of Christ." The whole idea is the transformation of eros! But this mood isn't just for monks and nuns. Householders can practice it too by seeing their spouse/partners as the embodiment of the Divine and serving them as they would God.The idea of ”making love to God" is of course very challenging because of narratives of shame and sin around sexuality so the first step in this kind of practice is to recognize the innate innocence of that energy, which is a form of spiritual energy, Kundalini. Then, through loving acceptance, we attempt to "divinize" that energy by directing it towards God in a gradual process of sublimation.Sri Ramakrishna literally worshipped his wife as the Divine Mother though you might say this came under the category of vātsalya-bhāva since Ramakrishna looked upon all women as his Mother. Note also that they had a completely chaste marriage meaning that's it's possible to practice this mode even without physical intimacy (There are much deeper and more refined versions of intimacy with a partner than the merely physical, after all!) though it certainly can include it in the case of having a partner. The best example is of course Rādha and her passionate, all-consuming love for Sri Krishna. Meerabai felt herself to be “married to Krishna” and actually had a ceremony performed. We also find this mood in Shaiva saints like Mahadevi-Akka. Sri Ramakrishna even told M. in the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna (in the entry on Thursday, August 24th 1882) that through devotion one develops a “love sexual organ” implying that, mystically speaking, it is possible to quite literally make love to God.While this mood is mostly found in the Vaishnava traditions (as love for Sri Krishna) some versions also exist in the Shaiva world. After all, many people often ask me about whether it's okay for them to think of Shiva/Devī as their romantic partner. I hope to address that question tonight! This is of course a natural continuation of our lectures on “Why is Kali Desirous?” and “What Does Kali Really Want?” and perhaps the subtlest of the series! Wish me luck! For more detailed instructions for how to perform Kālī pūjā, watch this playlist: https://www.patreon.com/collection/233799Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show

We delve into an episode that combines the intrigue of an unsolved mystery with the enduring legacy of one of India's greatest rulers—Sri Krishna Deva Raya. This episode was inspired by an interesting question from a handful of the listeners of this podcast and also something I have seen floating around on the internet forums and comment sections related to Vijayanagara or Sri Krishna Deva Raya.In the heart of Hampi, amidst the grandeur of temples and palaces that once echoed with the sounds of a thriving empire, lies a tantalizing enigma: the lost tomb of Emperor Sri Krishna Deva Raya. His reign, a golden age of prosperity and artistic brilliance, left a monumental legacy, yet the location of his final resting place has eluded historians and adventurers for centuries. Could it be hidden beneath the 64 pillar mandapam in Hampi on the banks of Tungabhadra; a structure whose intricate carvings might conceal the emperor's final resting place?
In the tenth episode of Satya Samvad, Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar interacts with Dr. Donca Vianu about the attempts by Wokeist new-age spiritual speakers like Josh Schrei to appropriate and misproject Dharmic ideas and elements, especially in the West. Understanding Dharma is often multidimensional, and therefore, within Dharmic traditions, the importance of a guru for guidance cannot be understated. A good guru selflessly helps advance the spiritual development of the disciple. However, in today's world, there has been the rise and popularity of those who mislead the masses for their own popularity and relevance, by looking at Dharma through a wokeist lens. Everyone from Sri Krishna to Mata Sita to incidents like the Nishad family dying in the Lashagriha incident in the Mahabharata are brought into question or outright criticized, in what seems like a sustained attack on the very foundations of our civilizational heritage, often with brazen lies, continuing the tradition of anachronism of colonial-era Indologists and mythologists. Nikki sits down with Vanamali Mataji of Rishikesh, India, while she is touring Europe. The scribe of nearly 20 books about God (from Sri Krishna to Hanuman to Shiva), Mataji starts with a powerful mantra and decree before sharing about the relationship between the apparent form and Formlessness, between Divine Ecstasy and quiet-Joy, and on living beyond time and storylines. She recommends practicing Yoga asanas daily to appear as she does- absolutely Radiant. "You can't live in a state of ecstasy all the time because the world will pull you down. But, even though it may not be ecstatic, it's still so filled with joy, not happiness, but joy. Because everything you see is a form of Its Form, or Its Voice. The birdsong, the sunrise, the moonrise, everything is part of that enormous and amazing power that energizes the whole cosmos. Every bit. So you can't go anywhere. Can you ever run away from yourself? There is no place you can run to. So that it is everywhere. The ecstatic moments may not be always there. As I said, the world will pull you down. But that joy is always there. Underlying joy is always there. That's why people love to live, even if you're in the throes of the worst type of disease, say, you still, the longing to live is still there because of that drop of Bliss which is always present in the whole."- Vanamali Mataji
