Padma Lakshmi is unquestionably a woman of taste. As a host of the beloved food-competition series “Top Chef” and the star of the culinary docuseries “Taste the Nation,” she's spent nearly two decades artfully conveying—and critiquing—flavors and aromas for an audience. Before that, she was a fashion writer and model, cultivating her own sense of what's worth wearing and seeing. And she isn't done evolving: she's recently begun performing standup comedy, an art form with a notoriously steep learning curve. In a live taping at The New Yorker Festival, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz talk with Lakshmi about the difference between discernment and pickiness, how travel has expanded her taste, and her approach to rendering judgement on TV. “I see my job as helping,” Lakshmi says. “I see my job as being the person in the kitchen who's saying, ‘Does this need a little salt?' ”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Top Chef” (2006—)“Taste the Nation” (2020-23)“RuPaul's Drag Race” (2009—)“American Idol” (2002—)“Project Runway” (2004—)“Padma's All American,” by Padma Lakshmi“Padma Lakshmi Walks Into a Bar,” by Helen Rosner (The New Yorker)“Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” (The New Yorker)Dijon's “Baby”“Frankenstein” (2025)New episodes drop every Thursday. In this luminous episode, Jennifer Urezzio sits with Dr. Lynn Anderson — naturopath, yoga & nutrition therapist, author, and longtime teacher — to explore how to outsmart your karma for prosperity. Dr. Lynn reframes karma away from moral judgment and into a clear, usable principle: cause and effect. She offers a practical prosperity map through the four gifts of Lakshmi — wealth, pleasure, harmony, and liberation — and reminds listeners that “wealth” can be anything that enriches you (health, voice, artistry), not only money. The conversation names the four great passions that trip us up — deceit, greed, anger, and pride — and centers awareness as the first, essential practice for transformation. Dr. Lynn and Jennifer walk listeners through embodied tools: cultivating internal dialogue with the soul, practicing breath and presence to step out of reactivity, using yoga and sensation to build awareness, and practicing trust as a lived muscle. Throughout, the invitation is to observe rather than judge, to convert thinking → speaking → doing into conscious karma, and to allow small daily acts to compound into real prosperity. Practical takeaways: Redefine prosperity daily by adding small acts of wealth, pleasure, harmony, and liberation. Notice bodily signals (anger, tightness) as the doorway to awareness — breathe, observe, release. Replace deceit with truth: start with honest internal dialogue and consistent small choices. Treat trust like a practice: build resilience from the inside so you can navigate the outer world. Learn more about Doctor Lynn at http://www.doctorlynn.com. Padma Lakshmi's new cookbook, Padma's All American, is a natural extension of her Hulu series Taste the Nation. In fact, the documentary laid the groundwork for the book, says the former Top Chef host. “Once we had done the show, I had all these communities I had already embedded myself in,” she told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. Beyond recipes, the book carries an important message: Lakshmi “was trying to...really highlight the positive effects of having all these contributions from immigrants.” For Lakshmi, the recipes are ultimately a vehicle for connection. “I am hoping that the food will entice you, will almost be like a bait to get closer to your neighbors. Hopefully you'll be curious enough to get to know the culture that the food came from and the people that are making this food.” Lakshmi returns to TV with the new CBS reality competition series America's Culinary Cup, where elite chefs compete for a major prize. “It doesn't look like any other TV set or studio I've ever seen.” Subscribe to my newsletter: https://link.newsweek.com/join/for-the-culture Follow me: https://linktr.ee/halanscott Subscribe to Newsweek's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/newsweek See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

David, Lakshmi, and Erin dig into the intersection of wealth, faith, and community, particularly from the standpoint of middle-class Christians. Sparked by Lakshmi's seminary research on Christian engagement with wealth accumulation in a neoliberal capitalist system, we explored theological and practical approaches to wealth: What does it mean to have or accumulate wealth? What are the impacts of capitalism? the role of intentional Christian communities? and the balance between personal finances and larger systemic (in)justice? pWotD Episode 3093: Diwali Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 407,031 views on Monday, 20 October 2025 our article of the day is Diwali.Dipavali (IAST: Dīpāvalī), commonly known as Diwali (English: ), is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions such as Jainism and Sikhism. It symbolises the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar months of Ashvin (according to the amanta tradition) and Kārtika – between around mid-September and mid-November. The celebrations generally last five or six days.Diwali is connected to various religious events, deities and personalities, such as being the day Rama returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating the demon king Ravana. It is also widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles. Other regional traditions connect the holiday to Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman.Primarily a Hindu festival, variations of Diwali are also celebrated by adherents of other faiths. The Jains observe their own Diwali which marks the final liberation of Mahavira. The Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas to mark the release of Guru Hargobind from a Mughal prison. Newar Buddhists, unlike other Buddhists, celebrate Diwali by worshipping Lakshmi, while the Hindus of Eastern India and Bangladesh generally, celebrate Diwali by worshipping the goddess Kali.During the festival, the celebrants illuminate their homes, temples and workspaces with diyas (oil lamps), candles and lanterns. Hindus, in particular, have a ritual oil bath at dawn on each day of the festival. Diwali is also marked with fireworks as well as the decoration of floors with rangoli designs and other parts of the house with jhalars. Food is a major focus with families partaking in feasts and sharing mithai. The festival is an annual homecoming and bonding period not only for families, but also for communities and associations, particularly those in urban areas, which will organise activities, events, and gatherings. Many towns organise community parades and fairs with parades or music and dance performances in parks. Some Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs will send Diwali greeting cards to family near and far during the festive season, occasionally with boxes of Indian confectionery. Another aspect of the festival is remembering the ancestors.Diwali is also a major cultural event for the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain diaspora. The main day of the festival of Diwali (the day of Lakshmi Puja) is an official holiday in Fiji, Guyana, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, and is symbolically recognized by some US state governments. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:24 UTC on Tuesday, 21 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Diwali on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Brian.

Unlock the Power of Persuasion: Discover "The Elephant Persuasion Principle" Podcast! Ever wondered how to influence people effortlessly, build unbreakable trust, and close deals like a pro? Imagine having a memory as sharp as an elephant's—never forgetting a name, a face, or a crucial detail that seals the connection. Recall like an elephant and watch your relationships soar! Elephants aren't just massive; they're memory masters! With brains weighing a whopping 5 kg (11 lbs - they excel at recall for survival and social bonds. Think about Lakshmi, the elephant in India who, after years of abuse, retaliated against her tormentor in June 2024. It's a stark reminder: elephants remember pain, loyalty, and everything in between. Now, apply that to your life - remember names like an elephant and you'll persuade like never before! Why is remembering names a game-changing people skill? It shows respect and genuine interest, sparking trust and rapport. In business, it supercharges networking and leadership. Socially, it cements friendships and nails first impressions. A 2016 Journal of Social Psychology study proves it: using someone's name boosts your warmth and competence, making you instantly more likable. It's not just polite; it's persuasive 101! But what's happening in your brain? When you hear your name, your attention spikes (like "Great job, Sarah!"), the amygdala lights up with emotion, and the prefrontal cortex evaluates the feel-good factor. It personalizes interactions, validates feelings, and follows social norms that make folks like you more. Here are two simple techniques: 1. Repeat and Use the Name Immediately: Say "Nice to meet you, Sarah!" and weave it in again: "So, Sarah, what's your story?" Repetition builds brain pathways, shifting names from your short-term memory to long-term recall. Example: At a networking bash, greet John with "John, awesome to connect - what's your passion, John?" Boom - name locked in! 2. Associate with a Visual Image: Link the name to a wild picture. For Rose, envision a Rose coming out of her ear. Your brain loves visuals, leveraging the hippocampus for recall. Want more insights into recalling names, increasing recall and 4 other techniques to instantly connect to anyone. Tune into The Elephant Principle Of Persuasion Podcast. Whether you're in sales, leadership, or just want to ace social scenes, this podcast turns you into a persuasion powerhouse. Send us a texthttps://jilljardineastrology.com/shop/ book your reading and Sanskrit Mantra transmission session.Ever wondered why your manifestation efforts haven't yielded the abundance you desire? The answer lies in an ancient sound technology that modern manifestation methods often overlook. While visualization and "feeling as if" techniques dominate today's law of attraction landscape, they primarily engage only your mental and emotional bodies. What about the subconscious mind—that powerful force controlling 95% of your thoughts and behaviors? This is where Sanskrit mantras shine as transformative tools for manifestation, working directly to clear subconscious blocks while simultaneously raising your vibrational frequency. When properly chanted, these sacred sound formulas activate Shakti (divine life force), clear karmic patterns, and attune your entire being to the frequency of abundance. Whether you seek financial prosperity, vibrant health, fulfilling relationships, or simply more time to enjoy life, these mantras create the energetic conditions for manifestation. In this episode, I share five powerful Sanskrit mantras for abundance from my authentic Sanskrit Mantra lineage. Each mantra is taught with proper pronunciation and explanation of its energetic effects, with recommendations to chant 108 times daily for maximum benefit.Ready to transform your manifestation practice with these ancient vibrational technologies? The mantras shared in this episode have been carefully transmitted through an authentic guru lineage, ensuring their potency and purity. As my teacher wisely says: "Mantras are powerful, they are formidable, they work." Experience their transformative effects as you chant your way to prosperity and abundance. This grouping of mantras is specific to bringing more prosperity into your life. The mantras invoke the Goddess of Prosperity, Lakshmi, in Vedic teachings. Chanting to Lakshmi, and Kubera, the celestial treasure, will bring in more abundance in the form of money, good luck, helpful people, fortuitous circumstances, blessings and boons.Chant these powerful mantras 108 X to bring more abundance into your life.1) Shrim (Shreem): This is the bija mantra for the Lakshmi principle of abundance. This means all kinds of abundance, which can show up as material prosperity, spiritual abundance, peace as wealth, health as wealth, and more. 2) Klim (Kleem): Seed principle for attraction. This sound is commonly combined with other mantras to attract the object of desire. To powerfully attract wealth it can be combined with the Lakshmi seed, Shrim, and added to a Lakshmi mantra.3) Om Shrim Klim Maha Lakshmiyei Namaha (Ohm Shreem Kleem Ma-ha Laksh-me-yei Na-ma-ha): This is a prosperity mantra which combines the "shrim" seed for abundance with the "klim" seed for attraction with the Lakshmi foundation mantra.4) Ha Sa Ka La E I La Hrim- Ha Sa Ka La E I La Hrim (Hreem)This is a seed mantra for abundance to increase prosperity. This mantra consists of seed or "bija" mantras which activates chakras (energy centers). "Hrim" is the seed sound for the sacred heart. This mantra gives attunement to the celestial treasurer, Kubera. Lakshmi and Kubera work together to bring in more prosperity.5) Om Eim Klim Sau Sau Klim Eim: (Ohm I'm Kleem Saw Saw Kleem I'm)Brings in universal consciousness and the Saraswati principle of feminine spiritual wisdom to activate "shakti" (or the divine lifeforce energy) to attract desires including happiness, prosperity, love and liberation).*The information in this podcast is the intellectual property of Jill Jardine, and can not be replicated or useSupport the show

from tardi wiki was the eighth and final episode of Series 15 of Doctor Who. It premiered on 31 May 2025. The story featured the return of Omega in an active role as an antagonist for the first time since the Fifth Doctor story Arc of Infinity [+], now voiced by Nicholas Briggs, with this story revealing Omega's time spent trapped in the Under-Universe had physically altered and deformed him into a monstrous corpse like being. The story also shows the apparent fate of the bi-generated Rani at Omega's hands, while the Mrs Flood incarnation of the Rani escapes shortly after witnessing her successor's apparent demise. The Rani reveals how she survived the Spy Master's genocide of Gallifrey, and that the genetic explosion caused by the Spy Master had rendered any surviving Time Lords and Time Ladies completely sterile, which was why she enacted her plan to find Omega in order to save their race, though with the purpose of creating a new Gallifrey she could rule over. In addition, her ability to follow the Doctor throughout time and space is revealed to be accomplished by use of a Time Ring rather than a TARDIS. Steph de Whalley also returns as Anita Benn, where it's revealed she began working in the Time Hotel after Joy to the World [+] and had been looking for the Fifteenth Doctor, in doing so archive footage from The Wedding of River Song [+] and Day of the Daleks [+] respectfully would be used to have Anita see the Eleventh and Third Doctors when visiting the events of those stories, before archive footage of Rogue [+] is used when Anita finds an early version of the Fifteenth Doctor during the events of that story. Before departing, Anita would mention "the Boss" who was previously mentioned by Beep the Meep in The Star Beast [+]. In addition to the Doctor's previous incarnations appearing through archive footage, Jodie Whittaker makes a surprise appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor near the end of this story, marking her first appearance since The Power of the Doctor [+]. Most notably, this story was the final chronological appearance of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, with the story ending with his regeneration, caused by him sacrificing his current incarnation in order to bring Poppy back into existence, the Doctor's regeneration in this story was also the first time since The Parting of the Ways [+] in 2005 that the Doctor had regenerated at the end of the current series; in the revived run of the series, starting from The End of Time [+] up to The Giggle [+], the Doctor would be seen regenerating in either Christmas or New Year's specials set in between numbered series. In a twist however, The Reality War and the Fifteenth Doctor's regeneration would end with Billie Piper, having previously portrayed Ninth and Tenth Doctor companion Rose Tyler, being introduced in the final moments of the story, and with her role being left uncredited. The Doctor - Ncuti Gatwa The Doctor - Jodie Whittaker Belinda Chandra - Varada Sethu Ruby Sunday - Millie Gibson The Rani - Archie Panjabi Mrs Flood - Anita Dobson Anita Benn - Steph de Whalley Winnie Petheridge - Sam Lawton Shirley Bingham - Ruth Madeley Carla Sunday - Michelle Greenidge Conrad Clark - Jonah Hauer-King Poppy - Sienna-Robyn Mavanga-Phipps Kate Stewart - Jemma Redgrave Susan Triad - Susan Twist Christofer Ibrahim - Alexander Devrient The Vlinx - Aidan Cook Rose Noble - Yasmin Finney Melanie Bush - Bonnie Langford Cherry Sunday - Angela Wynter Voice of Omega / The Vlinx / Dalek - Nicholas Briggs Lakshmi Chandra - Nila Aalia And introducing Billie Piper Uncredited First Doctor - William Hartnell (archive footage) Second Doctor - Patrick Troughton (archive footage) Fourth Doctor - Tom Baker (archive footage) Fifth Doctor - Peter Davison (archive footage) Sixth Doctor - Colin Baker (archive footage) Seventh Doctor - Sylvester McCoy (archive footage) Guardian of the Edge - Paul McGann (archive footage) War Doctor - John Hurt (archive footage) Ninth Doctor - Christopher Eccleston (archive footage) Tenth Doctor / Fourteenth Doctor - David Tennant (archive footage) Twelfth Doctor - Peter Capaldi (archive footage) Fugitive Doctor - Jo Martin (archive footage) Crew To be added... Worldbuilding Omega and the Rani The Doctor reveals that Omega is viewed as the Original Sin of the Time Lords who has discovered time travel. He was cast out from Gallifrey because he was insane. Omega has two hearts like all Time Lords. The Underverse is a world of legends, causing Omega to change into the Mad God Titan and become his own legend. After his escape, Omega wanted to become the God of Time and feast upon Time Lords. He also immediately recognises the Doctor. The Rani has her own Time Ring and Sonic Screwdriver. The Mrs. Flood Rani later escapes with the Time Ring. UNIT Susan Triad has build her own Zero Room at UNIT floor minus 10 to use as an escape pod. UNIT can also fight using Parallax Cannons. There are a few glitches in the new world: the border between Norway and Sweden has moved seven miles east. The colour teal is more blue and actor Ernest Borgnine is still alive. Belinda and her family Belinda mentions she has an uncle named Roo living in Kerala. Her mother's name is Lakshmi. She plays a concert in Manchester. Belinda wanted to see the planet Neptune and the Big Bang before departing from the Doctor. Belinda makes the Doctor an uncle to Poppy. She reveals she met Poppy's real father when she was 21 and is named Ritchie Akingbola, though they are separated. Ruby and her family Ruby mentions that during their time together, Conrad never revealed who his father is. Cherry reveals that she likes to play poker and that Joseph is the name of her late husband. The Doctor and the TARDIS The Fifteenth Doctor mentions he can turn the TARDIS into anything. The Doctor has never been to Kerala. He also reveals that in the year 60,000, there is a planet called New New Delhi. The Fifteenth Doctor can punch regeneration energy from his hands into the Time Vortex to alter reality. However this causes him to regenerate. He can still stall the regeneration itself for a short time. The Thirteenth Doctor is unaware of what bi-generation is. The Thirteenth Doctor mentions the TARDIS having "a third strand of phenotype markers that can turn a micro-spasm". Both Doctors hope that they will always wish they had more time before regenerating. The TARDIS remembers the Fugitive Doctor, revealing her on the TARDIS console screen between the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors. The Fifteenth Doctor is surprised to see the Thirteenth, joking that "normally the other guy shows up". References The Doctor gives The Upside Down from Stranger Things and Narnia as examples about the world hidden below, or "the Underverse". Notes Jodie Whittaker revealed that one of her regrets from her tenure was that she didn't get to interact with Peter Capaldi or David Tennant during the regeneration handovers, as their scenes were filmed separately. So getting to interact with Ncuti Gatwa during his own regeneration handover was special and a highlight of coming back for her cameo. A promotional image of the Doctor and Belinda dancing with a "Happy May Day" banner in the background was released for the episode, but no such scene exists in the final episode. Jodie Whittaker wore a wig for her cameo, as she had long brown hair at the time. Russell T Davies revealed that Jodie Whittaker's codename onset was "Petrol", because he might use it as a companion name in the future. This two-parter formed Block Five of Series 15.

"Before you speak, ask yourself: “Is it honest? Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it the right time? Does it improve the silence?” - Sathya Sai BabaToday, Erin and Sasha explore the 5th Chakra of speech, poetically named Vishuddha, meaning “purification of poison.” Vishuddha Chakra represents the Ether element, and the ability to turn poison into nectar - the process of purification. It is located in the throat, and is the seat of the power of the word. It brings Prana to the respiratory system. “The more silence behind your word, the greater the impact.” You may find, upon personal practice, that the simple elegance of Silence can be prescribed to most internal challenges. This chakra represents the quality of honest communication, turning ignorance into awareness, transmutation, choice, alchemy, infinity, receptivity, sensitivity, self-expression, “finding one's voice,” the ability to speak from the heart, and the ability to listen from the heart. Used properly, Vishuddha makes our words nectar, not poison. All poison becomes nectar when Vishuddha is strong and stable, developed and activated. Our words create reality, and since they originate from thought, our thoughts create our reality. Therefore, words are not only descriptive, but creative. When Vishuddha is activated, everywhere you go, becomes better as a result of you being there. If too much noise is there, too much talking or too much thinking, Vishuddha cannot be stabilized, because the element it represents is Ether (spaciousness, emptiness). The bija mantra for Vishuddha is “Hum,” which means “I am.” Because on a micro-level, we are God: the creator, preserver, and destroyer. Which brings me to the story of Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean. Once upon a time, the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) were on a quest to retrieve Amrita, the sacred nectar of immortality. In doing so, they had to churn the ocean using Mount Mandara as the churning rod, and Vasuki (the serpent King) as their rope. As they churned in what appears to be the original tug of war, Divine gifts emerged, like Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and the celestial cow Kamadhenu. However, before the Amrita appeared, a deadly poison called Halahala surfaced, threatening to destroy all of existence. Terrified, the devas and asuras turned to Lord Shiva for help, and in an act of supreme selflessness, he took the poison to his mouth to prevent it from harming creation. But instead of swallowing it or spitting it out, he held it in his throat, where it turned his skin blue, earning him the name of Neelkantha (the Blue throated one). This moment of holding and transforming toxicity without allowing it to spread, is the symbolic origin of the Vishuddha Chakra. Just as Lord Shiva purified the deadly poison without letting it harm him, Vishuddha governs the purification of thought, word, and energy. Shiva's restraint symbolizes conscious speech, wisdom, and the power of truth. The throat chakra teaches that life contains both poison (negativity, challenges) and nectar (divine wisdom). It is our ability to process, hold, and transmute energy that determines our spiritual growth. This chakra represents self-mastery, communication, and purification. Like Shiva, we must learn to hold challenges with grace, not letting toxicity consume us but instead transforming it into wisdom. When our Vishuddha Chakra is balanced, we speak with clarity, authenticity, and purpose, just as Shiva's act saved creation. As a legislator, she played a key role in abolishing the Devadasi system and improving maternity care. She founded the Cancer Institute (WIA) in Adyar, Chennai (1954) and established Avvai Home to support destitute women and girls. A strong advocate for women's education, she also helped raise the legal age of marriage for girls. She was a key figure in the Women's Indian Association (WIA) and worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi during the independence movement. Her contributions led to the establishment of the Government Children's Hospital in Chennai. For her lifelong service, she was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1956. A true pioneer, Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy's legacy continues to inspire generations through her contributions to social justice and healthcare.
Today, Erin and Sasha continue our Chakra series with Anahata, meaning “eternal unstruck sound.” Anahata is the fourth chakra, located at the heart, which is the seat of love and compassion. It is also the location of Vishnu Granthi (the knot of Vishnu). Its element is air, color is green, planet is Venus, and Ishta Devata is Lakshmi. Having neurons and brain cells, the heart holds the highest level of electromagnetic energy, inspiration, devotion, timelessness, and joy without reason. When Anahata is in a knot, there is attachment, neediness, longing, co-dependency, and a “me and mine” mentality. Vishnu Granthi converts once Anahata is developed and stable, and then there is an energy of immense clairvoyance, deep compassion, transcendence of fear, greater kundalini rising, experience of pleasure, and authentic connection. Lakshmi lives here, the goddess of Abundance and Prosperity. Abundance is a state, and in this state, all lack disappears. Anahata's base value of Peace (Shanti) converts to Bliss (Ananda) and then into Compassion, which is really just pain held in love. The feeling of Grace, or knowing you are held in Love, only arises when Anahata is open and online. It is not only about having an abundance mindset of gratitude, but an abundant heart, and with the help of a strong spine; an open, ever softening heart. So even when we experience personal pain, grief, sorrow, and despair, it makes us better people. When we go into deeper states within our heart, pain is not our enemy. It becomes maturity and compassion. Sensitivity is not weakness, it is our superpower. We must train it, not suppress it. Let the tears come, let them flow, and be grateful for them. This allows the heart to stay safe as it expands. And remember, where there is gratitude, there is Lakshmi, abundance and prosperity. Lakshmi Ramgopal is a musician and dancer who performs under the name Lykanthea. Her electro-mythic debut EP, Migration, received much-deserved praise from such outlets as The Chicago Tribune, Noisey, and Public Radio International's The World (and listeners will recognize its track “Hand and Eye” as The Witch Wave theme song). She's collaborated with Savage Sister on their sundrowned EP, and she's been creating and performing music via sound installations and performances for spaces such as The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and Chicago's Lincoln Park Conservatory. Her new project, Some Viscera, marks a shift in instrumentation, drawing more heavily on her training in South Indian classical (or Carnatic) music, as well as organic sounds from analog instruments, bird song, and lullabies. It touches on atavistic questions of motherhood and personal legacy. When performed live it is an evening-length work of sound and movement that explores childhood, nostalgia, and kinship in the Indian-American diaspora in the wake of India's independence, while questioning the boundaries of classical forms. Embracing the warmth of the sruti box, unprocessed vocals, and strings, Ramgopal's ensemble draws on a wide range of influences to create a work that is as expansive as it is intimate. Some Viscera premiered at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on September 26-27, 2024, and the music of Some Viscera is now available in a standalone album. In addition to that, performing both solo and with her ensemble, Lakshmi has done site-specific, immersive shows in spaces like Chicago's Edgar Miller's Glasner Studio and Garfield Park Conservatory, and in the middle of a freshwater stream. In 2018 she showed A Half-Light Chorus, which a sound installation commissioned by Experimental Sound Studio, and In 2020 she and visual artist Nancy Davidson showed a site-specific sculpture and sound installation, at Krannert Art Museum. The museum acquired it in 2023. Lakshmi received her PhD in Classics from the University of Chicago, and she is currently Assistant Professor of History at Columbia University, with a focus on the Roman Empire. On this episode, Lakshmi discusses her sonic shift from electronic to analog, music as ancestral offering, and the reincarnating power of love.Pam also talks about the secret magic of lullabies, and responds to a listener's comment about reconciling witchcraft with one's religious upbringing.Songs featured in the episode are all from Lykanthea's new album, Some Viscera:“Bird Song”“Garuda”“The Nightingale”“Cremation”Our sponsors for this episode are Ritual + Shelter, TU·ET·AL, UBU Skills, BetterHelp, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Grimsby Hollow Meadery, and Open Sea Design Co.We also have print-on-demand merch like Witch Wave shirts, sweatshirts, totes, stickers, and mugs available now here, and all sorts of other bewitching goodies available in the Witch Wave shop. And if you want more Witch Wave, please consider supporting us on Patreon to get access to detailed show notes, bonus Witch Wave Plus episodes, Pam's monthly online rituals, and more!
