Dès sa première parution, l'œuvre connaît un succès foudroyant dans toute l'Europe et exerce une forte influence sur la littérature de la Renaissance. Episode 231: Réflexions sur l'étude des musiques citadines maghrébines Dans ce podcast, Jonathan Glasser souligne que l'étude des musiques citadines en Algérie est plus ancienne qu'on ne le pense généralement. Il y retrace son propre parcours intellectuel, depuis sa première étude approfondie de la musique andalouse en tant que pratique sociale jusqu'à son projet de livre actuel consacré aux relations entre musulmans et juifs dans le domaine musical. Ce faisant, il situe son propre travail dans le cadre d'une longue histoire d'écrits sur les pratiques musicales citadines en Algérie, tant par des Algériens que par des étrangers, depuis les périodes médiévale et ottomane, en passant par la période de la domination coloniale française jusqu'à l'époque actuelle, six décennies après l'indépendance de l'Algérie. Il conclut en soulignant les sources sous-exploitées pour l'étude de la période moderne, qui promettent d'élargir notre perception de l'histoire des pratiques musicales citadines algériennes. Jonathan Glasser est professeur agrégé d'anthropologie à l'université William & Mary de Williamsburg, en Virginie. Il est l'auteur de l'ouvrage The Lost Paradise : Andalusi Music in Urban North Africa (University of Chicago Press, 2016), qui a remporté le prix L. Carl Brown Book Prize de l'American Institute for Maghrib Studies et le prix Mahmoud Guettat International Prize in Musicology du Ministère tunisien des Affaires culturelles.
