A nostalgia podcast dedicated to the Disney Channel original series Even Stevens! Hosted by Brittany Butler and Ethan Brehm, two super-fans of this underrated TV gem. They’re also probably the only two people on the planet who have each taken the time to rank all 65 episodes from worst to best. Listen as they review the series from beginning to end and discuss their contrasting lists along the way, interview cast & crew, read messages from listeners and talk all things Even Stevens!
What would YOU do for a pair of Quasis? We're talking about one of the most well known episodes of the series! Louis & Twitty turn to the black market in an attempt to buy some popular sneakers, meanwhile LJH is holding a fashion show at the mall to help support the school newspaper. It's an all around classic. In this episode we talk about dumb middle school trends, have a ridiculous argument over the meaning of a joke, and laugh at the wonderful absurdity of Scabby apparently selling underground cat food, sponges, and marionettes. We're so excited to provide another cast + crew interview for you all! We chatted with THE AJ Trauth, the beloved Alan Twitty, to talk all things Even Stevens and then some! AJ shares a ton of fond memories, casting stories and behind-the-scenes tidbits, gives us the scoop on some fascinating Disney Channel history, spitballs insanely cool reboot ideas with us, ranks his Top 5 favorite episodes... and SO much more!!! At a certain point this "interview" becomes 3 millennials getting nostalgic and talking about our favorite movies, the importance of quality kids programming and the downside of binge-watching TV shows. We had such a blast! He brought such a unique perspective to the conversation as someone our age who currently works in developing kids & family TV. And yes, we talk about what that job entails! HUGE thank you to AJ for coming on the podcast! We hope we covered all of your most pressing questions!! Enjoy! VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! This is it. This is the first episode that has us on COMPLETELY opposite sides of the fence. Louis, Ren and Donnie are left to secretly fill in for the (infamous) Chef Pierre after he quits cooking for Eileen's fancy business dinner. There's plenty of ridiculousness here, much to Ethan's delight and my dismay. Still, although we strongly disagree with each other here... we somehow manage to remain very civil. :) In this episode - We bring back the "Mom's Thoughts" segment and Ethan drops a major bomb about Chef Pierre that BLOWS MY MIND. Also... spoiler warning for Titanic, lol. VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! It's the picture day episode! Ren's cheeks swell up right before she has to take her 8th grade yearbook picture, meanwhile Louis has to bunk with Donnie for 2 weeks. Ethan decided to bump this episode up a few slots, making us pretty close with our rankings for this one! VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! Here we gooooo! Join us as we embark on tackling a whole new season of Even Stevens! Season 2 opens with what you probably refer to as "The BBMak Episode" or "The Lucky Penny Episode." We have a ton of fun breaking this one down, even though you can already see shades of our differing season two opinions. We answer another lovely voicemail, laugh at the wonderful ridiculousness of BBMak's totally not live recording session, read a fantastic crop of Tweets, get nostalgic about a bunch of stuff, and Ethan shares multiple relevant stories! Among many other things, of course... VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! In this AMAZING cast & crew interview, we sit down for a fascinating and fun chat with executive producers/head writers Marc Warren and Dennis Rinsler! It quickly became less about jumping from question to question and transformed into a super organic conversation in which we hope a lot of questions were answered! We talk about pretty much everything: how Marc and Dennis got their start, the early days of Even Stevens, casting, the writing process, a typical week on set, tons of behind the scenes info + fun facts, Shia, Honey Boy... and MORE! If that's not enough, Marc and Dennis ranked their Top 5 Best/Worst episodes of the series!!! You do NOT want to miss it! :) VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! In this super special episode we catch up a bit before diving into our very first season wrap-up awards ceremony!!! We reveal the winners of the listener survey, give our own personal picks, read listener feedback, and dip our toes into Season 2 by discussing some general thoughts and predictions! WE'RE FINALLY OFFICIALLY MOVING ON FROM SEASON ONE! Hard to believe. Hope you're all staying safe and healthy during this crazy time! SEASON ONE IS DONE!!! We've finally reached Episode 21 which, in an interesting twist, is the last episode of the season but the first episode of the series. Everything comes full circle here and it gets emotional. We're talking all about the original pilot episode! Louis and Ren are stuck on a ferris wheel and reminisce about the ups and downs of Louis' first week at Lawrence Jr. High. In this episode: We branch off into deep character/relationship analyses, spitball reboot ideas yet again, talk student government memories, and thank you all for sticking with us on this wild journey! We can't wait to continue. BUT FIRST... PLEASE VOTE FOR OUR SEASON ONE WRAP-UP SPECIAL HERE: https://forms.gle/YPrWe9f8wuggcGEw6 VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! It's time to PARTY, PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG AT THE CASA DE FIESTA!!! as we close in on the end of Season 1. This one brings us a fun and memorable Louis subplot. You know the one. The main plot revolves around Ren getting a "C" in wood shop. We're a little tough on Ren's characterization and wholly unnecessary quest for perfection here, but she thankfully makes up for it in the end. In this episode we come up with a cool idea for our subreddit, jam out to the greatest "Livin' La Vida Loca" knock-off ever, and finally pick the same best quote! This is the first episode that we both have ranked the same number! That's right: This is #7 on our lists. It's a super grounded episode with a lot of heart, laughs and strong development all around. In this one we're baffled by Ren's intense hairstyles, we mainly laugh/cringe at the ridiculousness that is Ren + Bobby and praise Shia's performance as usual - plus some little anecdotal stuff about school dances and more. :) VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! This episode is without a doubt one of the funniest and most quotable not only in Season 1, but in the entire series! Louis decides to make a short film titled "Three Eyes Wide Shut." If this movie actually existed, it would likely be in competition with Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" for best worst movie of all time. Listen as we laugh at the wonderful chaotic energy this episode exudes, discuss middle school crushes, and quote the episode waaaaay too much. We hope you get a good mini ab workout by laughing along with us here. Oh, man. VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 or send us a voice recording! Louis really wants a slushie machine for his room, so he opens a "Doggy Day Care" to earn enough money to buy one! We're on pretty neutral ground here. This episode has its moments, but suffers from 5 too many montages. Our Tweets segment is proof that the one thing everyone seems to remember from it is Louis' "Churro machine" at the very end. Listen as we call 555 phone numbers seen on the show and laugh at stuff like the absurdity of Ren running a teen job center from her room and Louis posting a cheesy flier of him hugging a random german shepherd. Chant it with us: "LUSCIOUS LOUUU! LUSCIOUS LOUUU!" Louis gets miraculously thrown onto LJH's wrestling team and he's pretty good! Everything's going great until he has to fight... a girl. Oh, boy. We air another listener voicemail, talk about how weird it might actually be to wrestle the opposite gender, and go on a slight tangent about how "Phil of the Future" recycled a gag from this episode! Welp, we're posting this 15 days after Hanukkah... but, it'll have to do!!! This is the probably closest we'll ever get to covering a holiday episode on or near the actual holiday, haha. Hope you all had a nice break! This episode is an absolute classic. Louis sorta-kinda-not really wishes he was never born, so his great great great great grandmother Bubbe Rose appears and shows him a world without Louis Stevens. This is yet another episode we've both ranked highly! From the interesting "alternate reality," to Louis' chicken comedy special... what's not to love? We also talk childhood holiday memories, take a BuzzFeed quiz about the episode, and calculate whether or not Bubbe Rose could actually have 7,000 grandchildren. Today we're tackling an absolutely classic episode! This one gives us the birth of the incredible fictional super-band The Twitty Stevens Connection and their hit "Sacramento Girl," One-off character number 9 Jason Bagwell, "The bunny in my brain goes hip-hop, hip-hop" ...among other fabulous things. We both have this episode in our Top 10s! In this podcast we also finally debut our Voicemail segment, discuss how Disney+ has impacted our podcast in the Wombat News, and Brittany shares a mind-blowing fun fact. Happy Holidays! Amazingly, "Heck of a Hanukkah" is up next! :) VOICEMAIL: 857-246-9731 EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Reddit | Redbubble http://www.evenstevensranked.com
This is an extremely special episode: Our very first interview with a member of the Stevens family! We're so excited to share our nearly 2 hour conversation with Tom Virtue, who of course played Steve Stevens on the show! We made sure to work in as many of your questions as we could. So settle in and listen to us talk about everything from his beginnings as an actor, plenty of Even Stevens behind the scenes/filming stories, touching memories, lots and lots of Shia LaBeouf + a whole lot more! *Please note: Around 1:14:00, we started experiencing some technical difficulties on Tom's end, unbeknownst to all of us! Thankfully we were able to salvage the raw audio from our Skype session to fill in the gaps. So, just know that there will be a shift in audio quality for 18 minutes or so at that point and then again for a small section at the end. The quality of the content is still 10/10 so we hope you can forgive that little hiccup and enjoy the interview! Huge thanks to Tom for chatting with us and thank you all for sending in questions! Ren, Louis and Chloe (a.k.a. one-off character Number... 8? Honestly, we've lost count) break into school at night to complete a display for Lawrence Jr. High's 75th anniversary. That's literally it. Throw in some random hamsters, Jumbo-Size Crinkle Fries, plus a possibly hot laser maze and... you're still somehow left with a pretty bland episode. Neither of us are too thrilled with this one. Louis and Twitty's friendship is on the rocks all because of a fancy scooter and some nasty chocolate! This episode includes a fantastic one-off character and some great performances all around! We talk about school chocolate sale memories, Brittany does her Shia LaBeouf impression one too many times and laughs way too much. Stay tuned for our Wombat News segment where we talk about some recent Shia news/Honey Boy promo, what the launch of Disney+ could mean for the future of Even Stevens, and the confirmed Lizzie McGuire reboot! Ethan and I are baaaack to our regularly scheduled programming! It's time to talk about the episode where Ren moonlights as a karaoke singer (and apparently exclusively only performs "Dancing Queen" and nothing else) at a Japanese restaurant. You know what we're talking about. I'm very neutral about this one but Ethan has it in his TOP 5! So naturally, there are a few minor disagreements here. THE "HONEY BOY" TRAILER IS FINALLY HERE! Ethan and I spend most of this review in utter disbelief that it's actually a real thing. We never thought we'd see anything remotely close to a Shia LaBeouf biopic that closely examines his Even Stevens years. It's incredible and we CANNOT WAIT to finally see it! We talk all about the trailer and catch up on some things that have happened while we've been away, such as Christy's Kitchen Throwback and Shia's new projects + interviews, among other things! It's good to be back. *Note: This episode was recorded a while ago, before Ty Hodges was a guest on Christy's show! Obviously, we would've discussed that Ren/Larry content!!! haha. Helloooo, everyone! The podcast is back from the dead with a fun bonus episode hosted by me (Brittany) and my mom, Jeannie! Ethan is still recovering from a health issue that's been affecting his ability to speak, so that's why we've been away and are still unable to record at the moment. So, I thought we should definitely post SOMETHING for you guys in the meantime. I called on my lovely mother (and her glorious Boston accent) to hop on the mic with me and run down her Top 10 personal favorite episodes of Even Stevens, similar to the way Ethan and I discuss our lists! A few of you also had some questions for her, so we talk a little bit about our mother/daughter relationship, plus her favorite DCOMS and Disney Channel shows! It's a VERY mature and serious conversation. Just kidding, it's literally my mother and I acting like silly 14-year-old BFFs. Mom's Even Stevens list starts at 18:35! Thanks for listening! Let's all hope Ethan gets better soon so we can get back to our regularly scheduled programming ASAP! CALL US @ 857-246-9731! Louis channels his inner Shia LaBeouf by living and napping in a store window for two days straight in the name of charity. It ends up being a surprisingly deep and hilarious commentary on today's society and the sensationalism of vapid viral trends. Now that's what I call performance art! #NappingForTheNeedy Buckle up! We have our first ~big~ argument! I have this episode at No. 8, whereas Ethan has it at No. 30... and things get heated! Which one of us do you agree with more?! We're curious. Let us know! This is our longest podcast yet covering an episode of the series! We had a lotttt of notes. In the end, we're left with only one question -- WHAT BED NEEDS 75 RIDICULOUS POSITIONS?!?! In this legendary season one episode, Louis finds himself personally targeted by the big tough 8th graders on Scrub Day -- the dreaded day of Junior High initiations. Also, Donnie needs to pick a historical character to dress as for a "living history" school pageant. It's pretty great. Louis cheats in a kayak race at the annual family decathlon and has a guilt-ridden mental breakdown about it. That's it basically. This one marks another big gap between our lists. I have this episode at #41, whereas Ethan has it DEAD LAST at #65. We might disagree on a few things here, but I think we can all agree that Louis learns a very valuable lesson: Sometimes, ya just gotta tell your dad "It's a family picnic, bro." (Recorded 2/22/19, a week after the premiere.) The live action Kim Possible movie is here and it's exactly what you'd expect from a Disney Channel Original Movie live action adaptation of a cartoon. It's low budget and cheesy by default and that's something you need to accept and embrace before watching this movie. It fully delivers on (most of) the basics, but is bogged down by a heavily flawed plot line. Instead of a fun origin story for a new generation, the script is dark and bizarrely focuses on tearing Kim Possible down instead of building her up -- packing a pretty soft punch for her live action introduction. In their attempt to make Kim "relatable" they overlooked and kinda sacrificed the important, effortlessly cool "aspirational" element of her character, which was a major key to the original show's success. The cast is great, the performances are solid and the KP universe ultimately translates wonderfully to live action. However, the biggest misstep here is the addition of Athena. Her existence unfortunately causes the story to fall apart. Listen to us rant about this character (among other things) and how she is essentially the very reason why the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" exists. This podcast includes additional SPOILERS for the Kim Possible animated film "So The Drama." Our second cast and crew interview sure is a fun one! We talk with the multitalented Jim Wise, a.k.a. Coach Terry Tugnut! In addition to playing everyone's favorite insane gym teacher, he also wrote a lot of music for the series as well! He shares so many awesome things and gives us the inside scoop on the writing process for "Influenza," some super cool cast stories and, most importantly... what the heck Coach Tugnut's relationship with Donnie was all about! Big thanks to Jim for sitting down with us and thank you to everyone who sent in questions!! We hope yours was answered! After a (very) extended holiday break, we are finally back in action! We're officially out of the Ehrich Van Lowe saga and kicking into true Even Stevens gear with with this memorable episode. Louis does an impromptu live news interview with the school lunch lady for The Wombat Report and it goes down in the fieriest of flames. It's legendary and the best thing that happens here. It's probably one of the best things to ever happen in the entire series, honestly. Listen to us laugh hysterically about it and other wonderfully bizarre things like trying to pursue a yodeling career in Sacramento, California USA. While there are a few clunky/on-the-nose jokes and the back half of the episode isn't as strong as the front, there's still a lot to like here! We're on pretty even ground with our rankings once again! We also make use of our own Wombat News segment because Shia's childhood memoir movie "Honey Boy" finally premiered at Sundance Film Festival and, amazingly, everyone loves it. Yay! HAPPY HOLIDAYS, EVERYONE! To switch things up a bit, we decided to do a ~fun~ "Listener Topics" episode! We asked you guys if there's anything you'd like to hear us discuss and once again, ya came through! Topics include: 1. How Even Stevens has shaped our personalities 2. Would a show like Even Stevens be successful on Disney Channel today? 3. Why isn't Even Stevens as popular as other old Disney shows? 4. Our thoughts on the new live action Kim Possible trailer! 5. Hilary Duff recently said that a Lizzie McGuire reboot is currently being discussed. Of course we have thoughts on this. More general reboot talk ensues. 6. We each list our Top 5 favorite Disney Channel shows! 7. We each list our Top 5 favorite Disney Channel Original Movies! 8. Listener Letters segment 9. The Wombat News! (Funny or Die's video on "Heck of a Hanukkah," and more.) ...THAT'S ALL FOR NOW! Enjoy our longest episode yet. A celebration is in order because we're finally wrapping up the first 6 episodes, otherwise known as The Ehrich Van Lowe Saga! Yay! Louis whacks One-off Character Number 4, low level local celebrity on campus Blake Thompson, in the face while doing less-than-stellar Marlon Brando impressions. One thing leads to another and Louis ends up saving Blake from almost choking to death on a piece of steak. Louis' popularity skyrockets after becoming the school hero, but his constant craving for approval quickly starts to negatively affect his friendship with Twitty and Tawny. Meanwhile, Larry Beale is weirdly in love with Ren Stevens we guess??? We talk all about the strange relationship that never came to be. This episode is actually much deeper than we realized and we were both pleasantly surprised upon rewatching it! Could it be the best of these first 6?! EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com FOLLOW: http://www.evenstevensranked.com Instagram | Twitter | Facebook
Neither of us really like this episode. It's at the bottom of both of our lists. Discussing the episode, however, somehow resulted in nonstop laughter! Here, we meet Ren's new placeholder BFF Charlotte. Charlotte's previous BFF Yvette (a.k.a. One-off Character Number 3) visits Sacramento and things go downhill from there. This is probably the cheesiest episode of Even Stevens. Ever. Of all time. It's bizarre! It's cringy! It equates Brown University to your local Brown Middle School! It's only partially saved by a decent subplot involving Louis and Tawny, but even they can't totally keep this one from falling nearly as flat as a pancake. Has anyone ever told you that you're allowed to have more than one best friend? If you don't know, now ya know. So far, I've never laughed harder while editing a podcast. This one is fun. EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com FOLLOW THE BLOG: http://www.evenstevensranked.com Instagram | Twitter | Facebook
In this episode we meet the second one-off character in the series -- Ren's conniving snake of a pre-high school mentor, June Marie. Ren is beyond excited to have June's help and thinks super highly of her, too bad June Marie has slimy ulterior motives. Meanwhile, Louis suspects someone stole one of his VHS tapes of a Saturday Night Live episode and installs a home surveillance system hoping to catch the thief. Thankfully, Louis' security cameras end up exposing June Marie's true colors. This episode marks the first appearance of the fabulous Tom Gribalski and the last appearance of Ren's placeholder friend Jewel. We debut another new segment: "Mom's Thoughts with Jeannie Butler!" Where my mother chimes in with her thoughts on the episode. We also read the most detailed and specific Listener Letter ever. ALSO, I went as Louis Stevens for Halloween. EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com FOLLOW THE BLOG: http://www.evenstevensranked.com Instagram | Twitter | Facebook
In our first major ranking gap, we discuss what most people probably remember as "The Talent Show Episode" or more affectionately, "The Mosey/Don't Mosey Episode." I have this one ranked at No. 14, whereas Ethan has it in his lower tier at No. 50! Through all of the plot holes that make no sense whatsoever, utter ridiculousness and one of Larry Beale's most malevolent moments, Louis The Aspiring Comedian and the heartwarming bond between brother and sister might be juuuust enough to save this one. EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com FOLLOW: http://www.evenstevensranked.com Instagram | Twitter | Facebook
In our very first cast & crew interview, we sit down with series creator Matt Dearborn! We talk about everything from Matt's beginnings as a writer, the Even Stevens audition process, where the heck Beans came from and so much more! This interview was enlightening in many ways. Turns out the three of us are co-presidents of the Shia LaBeouf fan club! The coolest part? Ethan and I got to pitch some of our reboot ideas! No questions on our list went unasked, and our appreciation for the show runs even deeper now. Huge thank you to Matt for taking the time to talk to us! Have any questions for our potential follow up episode? The mailbox is always open! EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com FOLLOW: http://www.evenstevensranked.com Instagram | Twitter | Facebook
The second episode of the series, which is actually the first episode, really starts to pick things up in the character development department. Louis makes the track team -- not because of his skill, but because of Larry Beale and his dirty rotten master plan to embarrass him and begin the Larry Beale Dynasty. Ren looks out for her little bro the whole time and Louis has a gold-star worthy, selfless moment of heroicness. This is a good one. We debut even MORE ~fun segments~ like Would You Rather and (my personal favorite) The Wombat News -- where we make a MASSIVE AND EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT! If you're a huge fan of the show, you do not want to miss this! EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com FOLLOW: http://www.evenstevensranked.com Instagram | Twitter | Facebook
In our first episode discussion, we talk about the "pilot episode" ...which isn't even the actual pilot episode and doesn't exactly function like one either. Louis trades School Nerd Ernie Morton a date with Ren in exchange for a knock-off Pokémon card. This podcast ep debuts ~fun~ segments like Boy Meets World-nection, Trivia, Tweets and Best Quotes! Moral of the story: Ernie "I Never Picked A Booger I Didn't Like" Morton is nasty. EMAIL: evenstevensranked@gmail.com FOLLOW: http://www.evenstevensranked.com Instagram | Twitter | Facebook
