Episode 359: Hannah Sandoz (performer-composer) [Chicago, IL]

Episode 359 features Hannah Sandoz, a performer-composer out of Chicago. In the interview we talked a lot about DIY touring, songwriting, and the ChiTown music scene. I featured “dominator1” on this episode, and if you like it you can stream it wherever you listen to music.    Hann Sandoz creates music that holds you while you cry, weaving tender lyrics with lush, intimate arrangements for guitar, vocals, and laptop. After first writing songs as a teen using scrappy recording techniques and candid, emotionally raw lyrics, they went on to study classical composition and production at the Oberlin Conservatory. That background shaped a reverent creative practice centered on tenderness, shared experience, and emotional memory.   We also dive into their latest release, MF / HS, which came out in October 2025, four years after relocating to Chicago. To support the record, Hann hit the road for a true DIY run, touring 6,000 miles in just two weeks across the West Coast, playing independent venues like Junior High in LA and Kilowatt in San Francisco. With ethereal vocals and gauzy, rural-tinged instrumentals that will resonate with fans of Adrianne Lenker, Grouper, and Animal Collective, this is a conversation you do not want to miss.   Please follow, rate, or review the podcast wherever you are streaming if you'd like to help us out.  -- Part-Time Rockstar Productions is available in the DMV for music videos and live filming.

“In many choirs, the tenors and basses were a minority. The tenors and basses at the middle level are disparate; they're not like each other in any way. Sometimes there's a common range of only about a minor third. I made it my goal to see if I could write music for that type of choir. Rule #1: the tenors and basses will have separate parts, and it will be in their range. I thought, ‘why not put altos and basses on the same part, just in octave unison, and do it for the entire song with no exceptions?' We called it SAB with optional tenor.  Now I've got 11 songs out with that voicing.”Dan Davison was the Choir Director at Ballou Junior High in Puyallup, Washington, from 1979 to 2019.  In addition to having taught the four ensembles at the school, he had numerous teaching and mentoring responsibilities.Currently, he sings professionally with Male Ensemble Northwest.Dan was born in 1956 in Sacramento, California, but he has lived in the greater Seattle area since 1965.  Since 1979, he has lived in Puyallup, Washington, with his wife, Cathy, who was also a public school teacher.  He attended public schools in the Bellevue School District and then attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, where he received his Bachelor's degree, studying under Maurice Skones.  He continued his education and received a Master's In Music from Western Washington University, studying with Bruce Pullan.  Dan's tenure as Choir Director at Ballou Junior High School acquainted him well with the complexities of the adolescent voice. His experience ranges from working with treble choirs to tenor-bass choirs to mixed choir, He also worked with vocal jazz ensembles and his Jazz Choir performed at the ACDA Northwest Convention in Seattle in 2010.  Dan is an experienced church choir director and has directed choirs at Western Washington University and Pacific Lutheran University.  Dan also directed the Northwest ACDA Youth Choir (grades 7-9) for the 2014 ACDA Northwest Convention.Dan is a published composer, with numerous works available from Walton Music, BriLee Music, Pavane Publishing, and Anchor Music. Mr. Davison received numerous awards for his role in music education, including the 1996 State Of Washington Christa McAuliffe Educator Of The Year, The Educator Citizen Of The Year in 2010 for Communities In Schools In Puyallup, Washington, and also the "Outstanding Choral Director Award" for 2010 from the Washington chapter of The American Choral Directors Association. To get in touch with Dan, you can email him at dandavison@comcast.net.Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

Downtowns don't come back by accident. They come back because someone decides they should, and then acts on it. In this episode, Luke Henry shares how he helped catalyze downtown redevelopment in Marion, Ohio. It involves real financial risk, building an ecosystem of local businesses, and staying committed when the work got hard.  It's a real, honest look into the challenges and joys of community-led revitalization, because, like many things, it's hard but worth it.  About Luke: Luke Henry grew up in Mount Gilead, Ohio and transplanted to Marion with his wife Lindsey in 2006 while completing his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Ohio Northern University. His entrepreneurial journey started with mowing lawns in Junior High to make money for his first car, then to pay his way through Pharmacy School. While in college, he bought his first rental property in Ada, Ohio at the age of 19. From there, his passions have grown for both small business and real estate, building ProScape Lawn & Landscape Services over the last 25 years to nearly 100 employees and locations in Marion and Columbus, while also buying and rehabbing single family homes and small multi-family, before shifting focus in 2018 to his passionate work in downtown Marion.  Since 2018, starting with the purchase of 8 buildings on a block of South Main Street that was 80% vacant at the time, he and his team at Henry Development Group have developed 20 historic buildings into a variety of mixed-uses, including restaurants, boutiques, entertainment and event venues, loft apartments, Airbnbs, and more.  Luke is deeply involved in the community philanthropically as well, having supported and served as a board member for numerous nonprofit organizations. Luke and his wife Lindsey live near Waldo with their two children, Emerson and Olivia. In this episode, we cover: Why downtown redevelopment is about ecosystems, not single buildings What it really costs—financially and emotionally—to take on vacant properties How to keep moving when skeptics and naysayers show up  Why local lenders and relationships can make or break projects How small, risky first steps can spark long-term community momentum Links + Resources Mentioned: Main Street Reimagined Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/main-street-reimagined-podcast/id1756754601 Henry Development Group: www.henrydevelopmentgroup.com Luke Henry Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/luke.henry.148/ Luke Henry LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/luhenry/ HDG Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/henrydevelopmentgroup HDG LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/henry-development-group-llc/ Want to get your business in front of our audience? Paris Junior High's campus is buzzing—but this time, it's not from energy drinks. Five eighth-grade students have launched a new community-based Future Problem Solving project aimed at educating young athletes about the growing risks associated with energy drink consumption. The group, made up of Amelia Elliott, Anna Echols, Clara Schmidt, Kennedy Moore, and Emma Donnan, calls itself Hype Hazard. All five girls are athletes, and their own experiences on the field and in the locker room sparked their concern. “We just wanted to make a difference,” said Amelia Elliott. “We started noticing how many kids were showing up to practice with an energy drink in their hand.” Concerned by the trend, the girls approached their former reading teacher and FPS coach, Eva Dickey, who agreed to sponsor their project. Together, they began researching the effects of energy drinks on adolescent athletes, uncovering alarming information about excessive caffeine, teen-targeted marketing, and long-term health impacts. “These girls truly are the change they want to see,” said Dickey. “Instead of complaining about a problem, they stood up, made a plan, and took action. Their leadership is already making a difference on our campus.” From there, the students moved quickly into action. This semester, Hype Hazard set up information booths at community events such as Christmas in Fair Park and a local pickleball tournament, where they handed out branded water bottles and informational fliers filled with facts, infographics, and warnings about potential dangers of energy drinks. To strengthen their message, the group also invited pediatricians—including Dr. Aubrey Gibbs—to speak to athletic classes on campus. “These girls are serving as true leaders,” said Dr. Gibbs. “When youth hear guidance and recommendations from their peers, they hold each other accountable and make healthier choices. We see the effects of excessive caffeine and sugar in the clinic regularly.”

The Young Generation (Cori) reaches out to the Old Generation (Nina) and exhibits patience while pretending to listen to geezer tales of things that go wrong with body parts and the SSDI Blue Book. Then we get into the hip, happenin', swingin' NOW with the latest news on gay martyrs, fake martyrs, and trans martyrs. Nina consents to Cori's exposition on immigration, and somehow gets stuck comparing illiberal policy to her Junior High school cafeteria. Plus: tribal identities, Cori's synagogue, lenses, spicy food, organ recitals, Title VII, cooling sheets, and a surprisingly out-of-character bathroom joke.Cori and Nina may not be equals, but they are co-hosts, which is about as close as we can get in this life.LinksSSDI Blue Book: https://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/AdultListings.htmhttps://blog.ninapaley.com/2025/05/31/illustrating-the-ssdi-blue-book/Jonathan Joss: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jonathan-joss-killing-police-records-neighbor-dispute-rcna210670Matthew Shepard: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/26/the-truth-behind-americas-most-famous-gay-hate-murder-matthew-shepard Get full access to Heterodorx Podcast at heterodorx.substack.com/subscribe
