Best of the Left - Leftist Perspectives on Progressive Politics, News, Culture, Economics and Democracy

Air Date: 8/1/2026 Today we investigate how the argument moved from what the Supreme Court decides to whether the Court should be rebuilt. Only about one in five Americans has strong confidence in the Court, and the proposals on the table would end lifetime seats, set fixed terms, and add judges across the federal bench. We're arguing that these reforms are necessary for a functioning democracy. Full Show Notes Transcript Be part of the show!   GB2RS News Sunday the 2nd of August 2026   The news headlines: Exciting opportunities within the RSGB Regional Team RSGB Examinations Standards Committee publishes annual report  Changes to the Youth Committee An exciting volunteer opportunity has arisen to lead the RSGB Regional Team following the decision by George Crawford, GM1DSV to stand down as Regional Forum Chair once the right candidate is appointed. The RSGB would like to express its thanks to George who will be focusing his time on serving Region 1 as its Regional Representative. The role of Regional Forum Chair is ideal for someone who is passionate about amateur radio, teamwork and empowering volunteers. This is a standout volunteer opportunity for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact across all regions, support our dedicated Regional and District Representatives, and strengthen the connection between members, volunteers and the wider organisation. The RSGB is also looking for a Regional Forum Secretary to support the smooth running of activity behind the scenes. This is a fantastic volunteer opportunity for someone who thrives on coordination, communication and teamwork, and wants to play a key role in supporting the Regional Team Chair and the entire Regional Forum. Find out more about both roles, along with details of how to apply, by going to rsgb.org/volunteers  You can use the same link to find out about District Representative roles in various regions around the country. The RSGB Examinations Standards Committee, or ESC, has published its annual report, relating to activities in 2025. The report shows that, although overall candidate numbers in 2025 decreased a little compared with 2024, they remain about 20% higher than predictions based on the extrapolation of pre-2019 trends. The ESC believes that this is largely due to the increased accessibility of training courses and examinations online. The ESC noted that the initial feedback received from candidates on the publication of the Full level question bank has been very positive. However, a few months of exam data are needed before the full impact of the measure can be assessed, and then consideration given to rolling it out at other levels. You can read the report by going to rsgb.org/esc  and choosing the ‘Minutes, papers and reports' tab on the righthand side of the web page. RSGB Board Director and Board liaison for the Youth Committee Nathan Nuttall, MM9OCC has announced that the RSGB Youth Chair Chris Aitken, MM0WIC has stepped down from his role as Chair. Chris, who is a teacher at Wick High School, has secured an ARISS contact for his school and will be using his time to focus on activities surrounding this. The current RSGB Youth Vice-Chair Leon Shaw, M0VUF will step up as Chair and the RSGB Youth Champion for Scouts Sam McCutchion, M0UEL will take on the Vice-Chair position. Sam will continue in his role as Scout Champion until a suitable replacement can be found. The RSGB is preparing to launch a new Training and Development Lead pilot role to help rebuild structured engagement with trainers, support new licensees, and strengthen the wider training environment. This 12-month pilot will focus on listening, mapping, evidence gathering and supporting the training community. Some initial information was outlined in the August RadCom strategy update and more details will be shared in August, including how trainers and providers can get involved. The July 2026 issue of RadCom Basics is now available in the RSGB mobile and web app for members to enjoy. RadCom Basics is aimed at newcomers to amateur radio and those who enjoy refreshing their skills and knowledge. The July issue includes articles on DMR for beginners, RF connectors and dummy loads. The full collection of RadCom Basics back issues can be found in the RSGB app or via rsgb.org/radcom Please send details of all your news and events to radcom@rsgb.org.uk  The deadline for submissions is 10am on Thursdays before the Sunday broadcast each week.    And now for details of rallies and events Today, the 2nd, Part 1 of the 2026 British Amateur Television Club Convention 2026 is taking place at Midland Air Museum, Rowley Road, Coventry, CV3 4FR. On Sunday the 9th, the UK Microwave Group 24GHz Trophy Contest runs from 0800 to 1700UTC. Using all modes on the 1.2cm band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 30th of July 2026. We've had quite a reasonable period of HF propagation over the past seven days. The solar flux index remained quite high and conditions have been quite stable, apart from a geomagnetic disturbance on Thursday the 23rd of July that saw the Kp index rise to 5.33. The solar flux index has been in the 140s and 150s, which bodes well for HF. There have been reliable openings up to at least the 15m band. We are still around eight weeks away from the start of better Autumnal HF conditions, but it is looking promising. At the time of writing there were nine active regions visible on the Sun, bringing a solar flux index of 143 and a sunspot number of 123. However, for software prediction purposes you are better off using August's current smoothed sunspot number of 84. The sunspots we do have are mostly clustered around the Sun's equator, which is quite normal for this point in the solar cycle. We normally associate high-latitude sunspots with the beginning of a new cycle, which is still many years away. Paul, GM4ULS reported a contact suddenly vanishing on 5MHz SSB around 1530UTC on Sunday the 26th of July. This was caused by a sudden ionospheric disturbance, or SID, due to an M-class solar flare. A SID usually sounds like someone has just ‘switched off' the ionosphere, although recovery can be quite quick. DX to be worked next week includes E51KEE on the Cook Islands; YS/WE9G from El Salvador; C6AYM in the Bahamas; T2JK in Tuvalu; UK/SP9DLM from Uzbekistan and OX3LX working from Greenland. The Arctic Legends team is now operating as RI0BU from Uedineniya Island until Friday the 7th of August. The higher bands, such as 15 and 10m, currently favour north-south paths, for example UK to South Africa and South America. The 20m band should be more usable for paths to North America. NOAA predicts that the Sun's activity may decline slightly in the coming week. A solar flux index in the range 120 to 130 is predicted.  A geomagnetic disturbance is forecast for Tuesday the 4th of August, with a predicted Kp index of 4. This should recover over subsequent days, back to a more usual 2 to 3. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The current spells of very hot weather have set their own agenda for radio conditions when it comes to tropo.   We have a tick for the high pressure, but the extreme temperatures have meant that the tropo-producing temperature inversions seldom survive the daytime heating over the land. It is only coastal stations that remain in the lift conditions during the daytime.  The weather forecast models for the coming period suggest that the weather pattern is trying to become more unsettled but, as in recent weeks, it seems to take a while to materialise in some parts of the country.  However, it will bring two changes for radio activity. One is slightly cooler weather and some showery rain, so there is a chance of rain scatter. Secondly, there will perhaps be less reliable tropo as the high pressure weakens. Some potential tropo paths probably remain from the fragmented elements of high pressure, but it may be rather hit and miss. Meteor scatter is worth checking out during the next few weeks with two smaller showers, the Southern Delta Aquarids and the Alpha Capricornids peaking at the end of July before the lead-up to the Perseids in mid-August. The solar conditions are still in play for the effects of coronal mass ejections from the Sun and the potential for auroras. So that's another mode to keep on the list. Lastly, a mention for Sporadic-E which continues through August and produced daily North American openings for many last week. Jet streams are often the driving force for turbulence in the lower atmosphere, and can influence the location of Sporadic-E. In the coming week they will probably not help greatly due to a very weak pattern over Europe. It's still worth checking out during the two usual windows of activity in the mid-morning and late afternoon. For EME operators, Moon declination is increasing again with consequent northern hemisphere increases in Moon window length and peak Moon elevation. Path losses will decrease as the week progresses towards perigee on Monday the 10th of August. 144MHz sky noise is low to moderate all week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Air Date: 7/25/2026 Today we look at the idea that America has become a gerontocracy, a country run by the old, and then interrogate the premise a bit. The wealth, the politicians, and the voting electorate really do concentrate at the top of the age ladder, and benefits for the old tend to stay protected while younger people wait their turn. But several of our sources argue age is the wrong name for the problem, that it is really a story about money and who the whole system was built to serve. What happens when non-technical people at a hackathon build in one day what software startups have been pitching for years? In this episode of KP Unpacked, KP Reddy and Nick unpack why sitting in a hackathon full of non-technical AEC people building working prototypes in eight hours is making software feel uninvestable. Incumbents are building features they've wanted for five years. Nobody needed corporate approval. Nobody needed a startup. They just needed a day and a keyboard. If that's the new baseline, what exactly is a software company selling? The conversation covers why PE firms are overpaying for AEC companies at 14x EBITDA and losing their best people 18 months after close (almost clockwork), why Procore's AI agents announcement landed with a thud, why vibe coding is a rabbit hole that creates individual value but rarely scales to the company, and why token pricing is heading toward the same bundled unlimited model as internet bandwidth in the 90s. KP also reveals his new LinkedIn rule: send a 10-page resume, not a one-page highlight reel. If you control what I see, I can't assess what matters. And a hospital system owner asked Zero RFI to build a real-time team qualification tool because they're tired of getting the B team swapped in mid-project without notice.Key questions answered:Why is software getting harder to invest in after every hackathon? What did non-technical AEC people build in one day that startups have been pitching for years? Why are PE firms losing their best AEC people 18 months after acquisition, almost to the day? What's wrong with paying 14x EBITDA for a firm that doesn't grow like that? Why did Procore's AI agents announcement land with nobody caring? Is vibe coding a rabbit hole or a real productivity tool? Why should you send a 10-page resume instead of a one-page highlight reel? How is KP cross-referencing resumes against his LinkedIn connections using skills files? Why do hospital owners want real-time team qualification tools mid-project?What's the AI diffusion crossing the chasm moment for the broader economy? Why is the Bay Area network effect getting stronger, not weaker? Why are tech company balance sheets suddenly going CapEx heavy for the first time ever?If you're building software for AEC and wondering why incumbents are building your features in-house, a PE firm trying to understand why cultural fit isn't transferring post-acquisition, or a founder debating whether to raise venture or bootstrap, this episode will force you to ask whether the software playbook still applies when anyone can build anything in a day.Listen now.

Foundations of Amateur Radio When the Sun burps, something that it does regularly, the mainstream media starts talking about aurorae and optionally the end of the civilised world, not always as clinically as that. What's not talked about, let alone explained, is the nature of the solar burp. You've likely heard the terms Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME, Solar Flare and perhaps Solar Wind, Solar and Geomagnetic Storm, and Solar Flux, but what do these terms actually mean and how do they relate? Let's start with some basic numbers. Our Sun is 150 million kilometres away from Earth. As seen from Earth, the Sun rotates on its axis every 27 days, called a synodic rotation period, because while the Sun is rotating, Earth is moving too. If that wasn't enough, the Sun isn't solid, depending on where you're looking at it, rotation happens at different speeds, faster at the equator, slower at the poles. You might have heard of the Solar Cycle, an 11 year period during which solar activity steadily increases, near the maximum activity its magnetic poles flip from North to South and activity slowly decreases until the cycle starts again. Until quite recently we've deduced this by counting the number of dark areas, called sunspots, on the surface of the Sun. All this to say that our Sun is one massively dynamic environment and with it come a whole lot of processes that science is still discovering. The YouTube channel Astrum has a fascinating video called "We Didn't Predict the Sun Would Do This", that describes much of what we're still learning. We experience the Sun as a source of light, but as a radio amateur you know that light only represents a small set of frequencies in the radio spectrum, it's better to think of the Sun as a radio source, emitting many frequencies at once. The strength of this is measured at 2.8 GHz three times a day at 17:00, 20:00 and 23:00 UTC at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. This measurement, the Solar Flux gives a good indication of the level of solar activity. Adjusted for the varying distance between Earth and the Sun, a Solar Flux Index, or SFI, below 70 means that solar activity is very low, above 150 is considered very high activity. In addition to radio waves, the Sun also spits out a continuous wave of particles. Different parts of the Sun emit these at different speeds, varying between 300 and 800 km/s. These particles, the Solar Wind, exist throughout our Solar system. Because the Sun rotates and the particles aren't being emitted evenly we experience the solar wind as having a 27 day cycle. Think of a water filled beach-ball hanging from a rope with a hole in it, spinning, creating spirals of water. Stand in one spot and every time the ball rotates, you get hit by water. When the Sun burps, often at a sunspot, where concentrations of magnetic fields cool the surface, bursts of electromagnetic radiation are generated throughout the radio spectrum. Measured in Watts per square meter, this radiation is called a Solar Flare. Travelling at the speed of light, it takes about nine minutes to arrive at Earth. Sunspot and solar activity is used to model and predict the potential for solar flares. Strength is classified in four stages, class B being the weakest, through C, M, and class X being the strongest, each ten times more powerful than the previous. Within each class, numbers 1 through 9 serve to provide additional resolution, X2 being twice as strong as X1. The most powerful flare on record was estimated to be about X45, recorded on 4 November 2003, when at strength X17 the sensors overloaded. Some solar flares coincide with a massive eruption of particles, some of which are ejected violently, called a Coronal Mass Ejection or CME. A slow CME, travelling at 500 km/s might take three days to hit Earth, an extreme CME, travelling at up to 2,500 km/s might arrive in 16 hours. As the CME particles arrive, they distort Earth's geomagnetic field and depending on the severity, might cause a geomagnetic storm where fields are pushed closer towards Earth causing visual effects as aurorae. Recovery generally takes up to two days, but in extreme cases has been observed to take four. Disturbances of Earth's magnetic field are highly variable and are expressed in several different ways, the K, Kp, A, Ap and G indices. The K-index measured at individual observatories, ranges from 0 to 9 over a three hour period represents the maximum horizontal fluctuation in the geomagnetic field. Values of 5 and above indicating a geomagnetic storm. The planetary Kp-index represents a weighted average of 13 mid-latitude observatories. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA uses a G-scale, between 1 and 5, equivalent to a Kp-index between 5 and 9. The A-index is derived over eight K-index readings over a 24 hour UTC period at a particular observatory, below 20 is calm, between 20 and 50 is unsettled and above 50 is a stormy day. The Ap-index is an averaged planetary index based on data from a set of specific Kp stations. There's more. In 1760, a publication by Swiss polymath Leonard Euler indicated the existence of three stationary points between any two large bodies, known today as L1, L2 and L3. In 1772, Italian born, French mathematician, physicist and astronomer, Joseph-Louis Lagrange, discovered two more stationary points, L4 and L5. Known as the Euler-Lagrange, or Lagrange Points, some of these locations are being used today for solar observations, predictions and early warning systems. Launched on 24 September 2025 and in orbit at L1, between the Sun and Earth, at a distance of 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, the SOLAR-1 satellite acts as an early warning for solar storms. Since particles travel slower than the speed of light, this provides about 15 minutes warning for extreme CME's and longer for slower events. It became fully operational on the 10th of June, 2026. As part of the same Space Situational Awareness Programme as SOLAR-1 is the European Space Agency's Vigil space mission. Intended to be placed at L5, 150 million kilometres from Earth, it will be able to observe solar activity as the Sun rotates towards Earth and reports indicate that this will increase early CME warning by two to four hours. Vigil will also allow for four to five day space weather forecasts. It's planned for launch in 2031, mind you, it's going to take three years to get to L5. Aimed with all that information, I was actually, for the first time, able to at least understand the solar report in my Mastodon feed. "The Sunspot Number has dropped to 88. The Solar Flux Index has risen to 149. G1-class geomagnetic storms are predicted for today. A-Index is 14, K-Index is 2. Chance of flares today: 55% for M-Class, 10% for X-Class." Armed with that information I'm going to make myself a cuppa and figure out what my WSPR beacon has to say about all this. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

This one takes a turn fast. We start with Rock The Park, which may or may not be responsible for KP's infected bellybutton, then somehow spiral into a discussion about infections, ailments, and the surprising number of things that can go wrong with the human body. We also ask whether hoodies and crew necks are officially out and if the often-mocked V-neck is making a comeback. Plus, Part II of "Everybody Knows a Doug" as you weigh in on the most Doug-like names in Canada and the stereotypes that come with them. It's educational, fashionable, and mildly concerning all at the same time.

When every pitch deck looks the same, sameness becomes the fastest path to the rejection pile.In this episode of KP Unpacked, KP Reddy and Nick unpack why AI-generated pitch decks have become the new resume red flag, why Zero RFI scrapped ROI calculators entirely in favor of just doing the work, and why a GTM leader took a salary cut to join a startup without ever doing the math on what a successful exit would actually pay them. KP walked them through the numbers. Their face went white. The conversation spans the Bay Area network effect (Nick is two weeks into testing a potential move and already has data), why construction innovation teams are now spinning up working prototypes two days before board meetings to justify replacing vendor software, and why Autodesk's $250M bet on World Labs might be the smartest move they've made since buying Revit. The deeper thread? AI is creating a sameness problem. Pitch decks look identical. Buildings are starting to look identical. And if your pitch for a construction AI startup looks like everyone else's, you've already lost. KP's new sales process: send an NDA, send your files, let us show you the value. If we created it, pay us what you think it's worth. If we didn't, pay us nothing. Four meetings replaced by one.Key questions answered:Why does KP refuse to open a Claude-generated pitch deck? What did the GTM leader's face look like when KP ran the startup math? How did Zero RFI replace their entire sales process with "send us your files"?Why did Zero RFI delete all their ROI calculators? What is the "show me, don't tell me" sales model and does it actually work? Why are construction innovation teams building working prototypes before board meetings? Are large engineering firms starting to replace vendor software with internal builds? Why is Autodesk's World Labs bet smarter than anything Procore is doing? What does "Zoom is for tactics, in-person is for strategy" actually mean? Why is the Bay Area network effect getting stronger, not weaker?Should startup employees be money-motivated and why is that not taboo? What happens when every building starts looking like an AI-generated pitch deck?If you're a founder sending Claude pitch decks and wondering why you're not getting meetings, a GTM leader considering a startup salary cut, or an innovation team trying to justify your budget to a CFO with a working demo, this episode will make you rethink what standing out actually requires when everyone has access to the same tools.Listen now.

Good morning from Pharma Daily: the podcast that brings you the most important developments in the pharmaceutical and biotech world. Today, we delve into a series of industry-shaping events, reflecting the ever-evolving landscape of drug development, regulatory challenges, and strategic maneuvers. In a significant move within the sector, Jasper Therapeutics has merged with Kira Pharmaceuticals, a strategic decision aimed at expanding its footprint in autoimmune therapeutics. This merger brings to Jasper a valuable asset in KP-104, a dual-inhibitor with the potential to address rare diseases—an area of considerable unmet need. Such consolidations highlight an industry trend where companies seek to bolster their portfolios with promising candidates that can tackle complex medical conditions. The merger exemplifies how strategic expansions are becoming increasingly integral to maintaining competitive edges in the biotech arena. Turning to clinical trials, Takeda's Zasocitinib has demonstrated promising results for patients suffering from moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. In Phase 3 trials, a significant 75% of patients achieved clearance of scalp psoriasis. Zasocitinib operates as a TYK2 inhibitor, targeting the IL-23 pathway—a crucial mechanism in autoimmune diseases like psoriasis. This breakthrough promises to enhance patient care by providing a more effective treatment option for those struggling with difficult-to-treat psoriasis. On the regulatory front, Novartis' Fabhalta (Iptacopan) has gained FDA approval for its role in slowing kidney function decline in patients with primary immunoglobulin A nephropathy. As a small molecule complement inhibitor, Iptacopan introduces a novel treatment class for this autoimmune kidney disorder. This approval underscores ongoing innovation within nephrology and offers renewed hope for improved patient outcomes. Recent regulatory updates also saw Novartis securing full FDA approval for Fabhalta—an affirmation of progress in addressing immunoglobulin A nephropathy through innovative therapeutic options. Business development remains a driving force in shaping industry landscapes. The acquisition of Mission Therapeutics' AKI candidate MTX652 by Dimerix is a prime example. This $5 million deal, with potential milestones up to $292 million, reflects high stakes and ambitions to advance treatments for acute kidney injuries—a field with significant unmet medical needs. The integration of artificial intelligence continues to revolutionize drug discovery processes. Aqemia's collaboration with Sanofi highlights this trend, showcasing AI's crucial role in expediting drug development and uncovering novel therapeutic targets. Their partnership potentially worth $140 million underscores AI's transformative potential within pharmaceutical research. Notably, Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna's foray into AI-powered protein design signifies an exciting intersection between gene-editing technology and artificial intelligence. Her involvement signals potential revolutions in drug discovery through enhanced precision in protein engineering. However, regulatory challenges persistently loom over the industry. Novo Nordisk and Alvotech have faced FDA scrutiny concerning manufacturing deficiencies—an issue that accentuates the importance of stringent quality control and operational excellence in biologics manufacturing. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) report on U.S. drug shortages during Q2 2026 reveals vulnerabilities within supply chains, notably impacting oncology drugs. These shortages emphasize the critical need for robust strategies to ensure consistent drug availability for essential therapies. Furthermore, geopolitical dynamics are influencing pharmaceutical supply chains. A U.S. Senate bill aimed at increasing transparency highlights concerns over China's dominance in drug ingredient supplies—an issue necessitating strategic adjustments by globally operating companies. Elsewhere within the sector, GSK made headlines by discontinuing the development of its chronic cough treatment camlipixant following mixed Phase 3 trial results—a setback illustrating the critical nature of trial outcomes in determining drug viability and market potential. In market trends, biotech IPOs have surged during the first half of 2026—a sign of robust investor interest fueled by innovations and favorable funding environments despite associated market volatility risks. Strategic adjustments continue across companies with mergers and acquisitions leading to workforce reductions—projected layoffs exceeding 14,000 within biopharma during H1 2026—as organizations streamline operations or pivot towards more promising research domains. Lastly, Merck's FDA approval for an oral PCSK9 inhibitor marks a significant achievement in cardiovascular care—representing another stride forward in therapeutic innovation. In summary, these developments encapsulate a landscape defined by scientific pursuits yielding mixed results amidst evolving regulatory interactions and strategic realignments—all contributing towards innovative healthcare solutions while navigating complex industry dynamics.Support the show

Skincare Anarchy
Before Barrier Repair Was a Trend with Catherine D'Aragon of First Aid Beauty

Skincare Anarchy

Send us Fan MailCatherine D'Aragon, CEO of First Aid Beauty, joins Skin Anarchy to discuss how the brand built its barrier science foundation years before barrier repair became a trend, why it develops products around problems instead of buzzy ingredients, how it responds to dupes, what changed after the P&G acquisition, and the GLP-1 body care innovation coming next. Below are the biggest questions answered in this episode.Did First Aid Beauty focus on barrier repair before it was a trend?Yes. The brand was founded in 2009 around sensitive skin, and its hero product, Ultra Repair Cream, carries a clinical claim of strengthened skin barrier in seven days, long before barrier language dominated the market. D'Aragon is direct about the wave of newcomers: "There's a lot of brands that came in and said, oh, we invented barrier repair, and now we're the brand for barrier repair." First Aid Beauty simply talked about it as sensitive skin science, and every formula since has been built to strengthen the barrier. How does First Aid Beauty decide which skincare trends to follow?By evaluating the science behind the trend rather than chasing it. "We need to evaluate the science behind the trend... we don't develop product in three months. We develop product, it takes years to develop." The brand does listen to its community for new ways to use existing products: the KP Bump Eraser body scrub was developed for keratosis pilaris, but when consumers began using it to prep skin before tanning, the brand added that usage to its messaging. Trends can expand how a product is talked about, but they never start the development process. How do you build a skincare brand that lasts?Stay true to the brand DNA through every launch decision. First Aid Beauty was founded to deliver problem solving formulas for sensitive skin with a luxurious experience, filling the gap between effective but joyless drugstore products and sensorial prestige ones. D'Aragon admits the brand once drifted: "We kind of went off track and we launched product that was really not in that kind of problem solution sensitive skin, and we decided to discontinue those products." Anything that makes sensitive skin react in testing never launches, no matter how promising. Is retinol safe for sensitive skin?Conventional retinol often is not, which is why First Aid Beauty spent years solving the problem before entering the category. "We spent like three years researching and we found a very specific technology about encapsulated retinol with slower delivery, then it's less irritation." The encapsulation slows release into the skin, delivering the antiaging benefit without the stripping that disqualifies most retinol products for reactive skin. Can exfoliation work for sensitive skin?Yes, if the acids are chosen for gentleness rather than intensity. The Facial Radiance Pads pair glycolic acid with lactic acid, a gentler acid, to deliver what D'Aragon calls "real exfoliation, but without the irritation." The combination approach reflects the same principle as the retinol work: the category is not off limits for sensitive skin, but the formulation has to be rebuilt around it.Who is the First Aid Beauty customer? Not one person but several distinct tribes, which the brand studies through extended consumer research sessions. "We call it the simple girl, the person that just wants simple product that works and is tired of the trend and is tired of going to social media." Other tribes are actively problem solving specific skin concerns. The brand adapts its messaging to each tribe but never adapts the products themselves, which stay anchored to the science. How does First Aid Beauty respond to dupes?By testing them head to head rather than ignoring them or cutting prices. "We buy the product, we tried it, and we try to find why we have superiority claims. And every time we are superior versus the competition." Superiority shows up in ingredient selection, concentrations suited to sensitive skin, and even material choices like the fabric of the pads. The brand holds its accessible pricing rather than racing dupes to the bottom, and focuses on educating consumers about the differences. Are skincare dupes as good as the original?D'Aragon encourages consumers to investigate rather than assume. "Look at the concentration of the acid, of any ingredient that is important for that product. Look at the combination of ingredients and look it up and try it if you want." Her confidence comes from watching the pattern play out: many consumers try the dupe, then return to the original because it delivers on its promise.Did the P&G acquisition change First Aid Beauty? The brand gained resources without losing its identity. Access to P&G research and development means even more rigorous science, testing, and safety standards, though it can slow launches. "Sometimes we're a little bit slower to launch some products... but at the end of the day, for the consumers, I think it's a plus." The brand also kept its Boston offices and much of its original team rather than relocating to P&G headquarters, preserving the culture that built it.Are indie skincare brands tested as rigorously as big company brands? Not always, and D'Aragon says consumers rarely realize it. Speed to market can come at the cost of testing depth: "In three, four months, you have a new product coming out to life. But has it gone through all the testing? I'm not sure. The US market is not that regulated." She argues that big company ownership, often framed as diluting a brand, can actually mean a safer product because of the additional scientific rigor behind it.How does First Aid Beauty choose new ingredients?Problem first, never ingredient first. "We don't innovate by ingredient because something is buzzy. We innovate by what's the next problem to solve." Once the problem is defined, the team researches which ingredients can solve it safely for sensitive skin. D'Aragon's logic is durability: a buzzy ingredient fades within a year or two, but the problem a product solves remains, which is why Ultra Repair Cream still works across countless scenarios years later. Is First Aid Beauty launching a GLP-1 skincare product?Yes, in body care. D'Aragon revealed that the brand's next innovation targets skin changes from GLP-1 weight loss: "That's gonna be our next innovation next year, in that body GLP-1, to help people with the saggy skin." She frames it as a problem affecting every age and gender that few brands are addressing, consistent with the brand's approach of solving unsexy problems the fancy skincare world ignores. Why doesn't First Aid Beauty lead with fragrance in body care?Because the brand solves problems, and fragrance is not a problem. "There's a lot of brands that are leading with their fragrance. And we will never lead by fragrance... we're there to help you fix some problem." First Aid Beauty was in body care years before the current boom, anchored by the KP franchise, and its ingrown hair pads have become a fast growing product for men and women alike. A generic shower gel or body lotion will never launch because it solves nothing. What leadership advice does Catherine D'Aragon offer?"Agility, flexibility, adaptation, resilience are all qualities that are super important." With teams split across Boston, New York, and Cincinnati, she also insists on protecting time together in person, arguing that the human interaction lost during COVID never fully returned at brands that stayed remote, and that no amount of collaboration tooling replaces it.What career advice does she have for people entering the beauty industry?Rotate through as many functions as possible in the first decade: influencer work, PR, social media, brand marketing. Stay humble through industry cycles, because some years will be tough regardless of talent. Above all: "Be curious, try a lot of things, but also be curious outside of beauty and see what other categories are doing." She notes the industry has reinvented itself roughly 25 times during her career, and curiosity is what keeps a marketer relevant through every wave.Listen to the full episode with Catherine D'Aragon of First Aid Beauty on Skin Anarchy, available wherever you get your podcasts.Shop First Aid BeautyDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!Support the show

The Facebook moment just hit enterprise AI. Did you miss the terms of service update? In this episode of KP Unpacked, KP Reddy and Nick break down why the Alex Karp CNBC interview landed like a bomb in enterprise boardrooms but barely surprised anyone actually building with AI. Construction company CEOs were getting texts from board members within hours: "Did you see this? What are we doing?" The answer for most of them? Running Microsoft Copilot, banning Claude, and quietly dealing with ransomware attacks that have already put subcontractors out of business.KP walks through the apple pie analogy: buying a pre-made pie (frontier models) is cheaper, faster, consistent. Making your own (open source) costs more, takes longer, outcome uncertain. But here's the real insight: the question isn't open source versus frontier models. It's what data should you never feed any model, period. Then a Bay Area contractor says something that cuts through all the noise: these YC kids have no construction experience, no relationships, no reputation. If they take our data and screw it up, they move on to their next startup. What do they have to lose? That's not a technology question. That's a trust question. And construction figured out the answer decades ago when they started vetting subcontractors.Key questions answered:Why did the Karp CNBC interview send board members texting their CEOs?What does "we're training on your data" actually mean legally and technically? Is the apple pie analogy the best way to explain open source versus frontier models? Why is ransomware quietly killing subcontractors before AI even arrives? What does a contractor's subcontractor vetting process teach us about evaluating AI startups? If a YC startup takes your data and folds, what does the founder have to lose? Why did Claude's updated terms of service change the conversation? What's the Red Hat playbook and why is Palantir following it?How does Zero RFI's opt-in audit trail architecture solve the data trust problem? Why are most AEC firms staying on Microsoft Copilot and not moving anywhere fast?Should startups building on frontier models be worried about their defensibility? Why does Karp get away with saying things every other public company CEO won't?If you're a construction company trying to figure out what to tell your board after the Karp interview, a startup wondering how to build trust with enterprise clients around data, or an executive who just realized you never actually read those terms of service, this episode will help you figure out what you actually agreed to and what to do next.Listen now.

Are mortgage lenders building for the next market—or waiting for rates to bail them out?In this episode of The FinTech Hunting Podcast, host Michael Hammond sits down with Kevin Peranio, Chief Lending Officer and Partner at PRMG, for a candid conversation on the market realities, AI disruption, and leadership decisions shaping the future of mortgage.KP does not talk about AI like a buzzword. He breaks down where the industry is already seeing ROI, why mortgage is still in the early innings of AI adoption, and why lenders who wait too long may find themselves trying to catch competitors who already learned how to use technology to grow. This conversation goes beyond rates and surface-level market talk. Michael and KP dig into the uncomfortable questions every mortgage leader should be asking right now:Is waiting for rate relief a strategy—or just denial? Can AI help loan officers become more productive without losing the human side of lending?Where should lenders invest first: sales, operations, fulfillment, or borrower experience? How should companies think about build vs. buy, vendor consolidation, and open architecture? What happens as trigger leads decline and lenders are forced back to fundamentals like relationships, local expertise, and referral strategy? And most importantly: who is actually building for the next mortgage market? If you are a mortgage executive, loan officer, fintech founder, technology vendor, or industry leader trying to understand what comes next, this episode is worth your time. The market may not save you.But the right strategy, technology, and leadership decisions might.Listen now to hear KP's take on mortgage's AI race—and why the lenders who move with intention today may be the ones pulling ahead tomorrow.Guest: Kevin Peranio, Chief Lending Officer and Partner, PRMGHost: Michael Hammond, The FinTech Hunting Podcast###Michael Hammond, Founder of NexLevel Advisors, is the leading fractional CMO in mortgage and mortgage technology, specializing in AI-powered growth strategy and audience development.

In this episode, I'm joined by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dustin Portela to break down the skincare trends, treatments, and products that are dominating social media. We discuss what a simple, effective skincare routine should look like, the truth about peptides, growth factors, exosomes, and collagen supplements, and how to separate evidence based skincare from online hype. We also rate some of today's most viral skincare trends, including beef tallow, red light therapy, NAD, snail mucin, at home microneedling, plasma pens, and salmon DNA facials, while discussing what actually works, what's overhyped, and what may not be worth your time or money. If you've ever wondered whether the latest skincare craze lives up to the claims, this episode is for you. Topics Discussed:  → What does an effective skincare routine actually look like? → Are peptides, growth factors, and exosomes worth the investment? → How do sleep, exercise, and lifestyle habits affect skin aging? → How can you spot misleading skincare advice on social media? → Which viral skincare trends actually work, and which are overhyped?
