The Story Of ABBA Melancholy Undercover From Music Historian Jan Gradvall

Through exclusive interviews and over a decade of deep research, renowned music journalist Jan Gradvall explores the secrets to ABBA's success. There has never been a group like ABBA. More than half a century after their songs were recorded, ABBA still make people the world over dance and sing their hearts out. In 2013, when the band had not been interviewed for over thirty years, Jan Gradvall was granted unique access to them for the next decade and the result is The Story of ABBA: Melancholy Undercover. Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad all share their personal stories, their thoughts and their opinions about ABBA's music more openly than ever before. Weaving in and out of their story, well-known international music critic Jan Gradvall reveals the context in which their unique sound developed and shows how the story of ABBA is also the story of Sweden and the globalization of pop culture. From their earliest hits in Sweden like "People Need Love" and "Ring, Ring" to their chart-topping international hits like "Dancing Queen," "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" and "Mama Mia!" to ABBA Voyage - their first album in forty years - and the two-million-ticket-selling eponymous concert-experience in London, it is undeniable that, in the history of pop culture and music, there has never been a group like ABBA. With remarkable intimacy, Gradvall's sensational book brings readers closer than ever to one of the world's most notoriously private groups.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2937: Cher Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 20 May 2025, is Cher.Cher ( SHAIR; born Cheryl Sarkisian; May 20, 1946) is an American singer, actress and television star. Dubbed the "Goddess of Pop", she is known for her androgynous contralto voice, bold visual presentation and multifaceted career, while cultivating a screen persona that mirrors her public image by often portraying strong-willed and outspoken women. An influential figure in popular culture, her continual reinvention has fueled multiple comebacks over a career spanning more than six decades.Cher gained fame in 1965 as part of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, early exponents of 1960s counterculture, while also scoring solo top-ten singles such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)". In the 1970s, she topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with narrative pop songs "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady". After focusing on acting, she reemerged in a hair metal style with the albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989) and Love Hurts (1991), producing international number-one singles "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)". At 52, she reached a commercial peak with the dance-pop album Believe (1998), which introduced the "Cher effect"—a stylized use of Auto-Tune to distort vocals. The title track became 1999's number-one song in the US and the UK's best-selling single by a female artist. In the 21st century, she released her highest-charting US Billboard 200 albums, Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018), both of which debuted at number three.Cher became a TV star in the 1970s with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and her solo show Cher, both on CBS, attracting over 30 million weekly viewers. She gained critical acclaim after debuting on Broadway and starring in the film adaptation of Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982). Transitioning to film, she earned two Academy Award nominations—for Silkwood (1983) and Moonstruck (1987), winning the Oscar for Best Actress for the latter—and received the Cannes Film Festival's Best Actress Award for Mask (1985). Other starring roles include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Mermaids (1990), If These Walls Could Talk (1996, her directorial debut), Tea with Mussolini (1999), Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018). Her life and career inspired the 2018 jukebox musical The Cher Show.Cher is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated global sales of over 100 million records. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and the only solo artist with number-one singles on the US Billboard charts in seven consecutive decades (1960s–2020s). Her accolades include an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes, the Billboard Icon Award and the Kennedy Center Honors. Her 2002–2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour was the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist at the time, earning $250 million—about $402 million in 2025. Beyond music and acting, Cher is known for her progressive politics and advocacy for causes including LGBTQ rights and HIV/AIDS awareness. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:18 UTC on Tuesday, 20 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Cher on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kendra.

I 2004 dúradh nach mbeadh leath de na daoine a raibh ina chónaí I mBaile Átha Cliath ábalta a teach féin a bheith acu I dhá bhliain agus an rud céanna le trian de na daoine ina chónaí sa tír. I 1986 bhí dlí nua ann do bhruscar d'úinéir de bhialann gasta, pictiúrlann agus siopaí. Bhí siad freagrach as a áit a coimeád glan. Bhí maor bruscar ag dul timpeall ag tabhairt fíneáil do na áit nach raibh glan. I 2010 d'oscail an chéad ionad tumadóireacht in Éirinn sa chontae. Bhí an áit ar eolas ag na daoine a raibh ina chónaí sa bhaile. Bhí na chlár ó 10 méadar go dtí 40 méadar. Sin McFly le Five Colours In Her Hair – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2004. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1977 chuaigh ABBA chuig barr na cairteacha le Dancing Queen I Meiriceá. Bhí sé a seachtú singil a bhí sna cairteacha I Meiriceá agus sa Bhreatain. I 2000 tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh Craig David an t-amhránaí is óige a fuair a chéad uimhir a haon sna cairteacha sa Bhreatain. Ceithre mhí tar éis é sin chuaigh a amhrán 7 Days chuig barr na cairteacha. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh amhránaí Lil Nas X I Meiriceá I 1999 agus rugadh aisteoir Kristen Stewart I Meiriceá ar an lá seo I 1990 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sí. They would be responsible for keeping the area of their premises tidy. A litter warden would enforce the fines which carry hefty fines.   2010 - Ireland's first inland dive center opened at one of Portroe's old quarries. The new center, known locally as the “green hole,” will allow divers of all grades to enjoy depths ranging from 10m to 40m and visibility from 3m to 15m.  That was McFly with Five Colours In Her Hair – the biggest song on this day in 2004. Onto music news on this day In 1977, ABBA topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with “Dancing Queen.” The song, which marked the Swedish quartet's seventh Top 40 single in the US, hit No.1 in the UK and a dozen other countries. In 2000, with “Fill Me In,” British R&B star Craig David – who was a month shy of his 19th birthday – became the youngest UK male solo artist to write and perform a No.1 hit on the UK singles chart. Four months later, he scored another chart-topper with “7 Days.” And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – singer Lil Nas X was born in 1999 and actress Kristen Stewart was born in California in 1990 – and this is some of the stuff she has done. (mg)

Let's go back, let's go back, let's go way on back to that time Aretha Franklin recorded one of her best songs. On this episode, Kirk dives into two different versions of Franklin's classic tune "Think." First it's the laid back groove and roomy mix of the 1968 original, then it's time to fast-forward 12 years for the juiced-up arrangement she recorded with the Blues Brothers band in 1980.It's a story of how different production techniques, arrangements, and tempos can lead to two very different—but equally excellent—versions of the same song. Send us a textWhat happens when you blend the chaotic beauty of "Apocalypse Now" with the haunting melodies of The Doors? Find out as we unravel the magic behind the perfect synchronization of "The End" with the film's opening scene. We also dive into the unforgettable performances by Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, and Robert Duvall, while younger stars like Harrison Ford and Laurence Fishburne add extra layers of depth. We can't help but discuss Duvall's character's bizarre surfing obsession, which even inspired The Clash's "Charlie Don't Surf." Next, we take a trip through late 1979's music landscape, spotlighting Blondie's "Dreaming," a track inspired by ABBA's "Dancing Queen," which achieved phenomenal success.  The Eagles' first album since "Hotel California," "The Long Run," also gets its due, as we explore the hit single "Heartache Tonight" and the contributions of Bob Seger and JD Souther. Our final segments are all about the camaraderie and challenges of making music. Listen in as Jimmy recounts his time with Space Giants and the creative process behind their album "First Transmission." It's a walk down memory lane. Well, what a difference a week makes! While we were congratulating ourselves on such a nice little program on behalf of our "skeleton crew" of diehards after last week...it sure is good to have the whole team together again! Yes, JD and Gigi are back, we're ready for our farewell to September edition of the John Clay Wolfe Show--and we've got a LOT to offer! John's pal Adam Carolla stops by to talk about what may be the Hollywood/SCCA Auto Racing collection that beats them all: the models driven by the great Paul Newman in countless Sports Car Club of America, Le Mans, and Trans-Am races...PLUS, Joe Exotic gets us all caught up on life in Federal prison with no power for a number of days, his disdain for President Zelenskyy and other generally goofy notions, and his hope for winning a full appeal and quick release--possibly this year (let's just hope none of the judges on his motion to appeal panels are from the Ukraine)! Of course, JD Ryan has an astounding collection of breaking news stories and curious tidbits, including an Arkansas pastor who some think may be the secret identity of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley--and yes, we've got him on the show! Meanwhile, the Colonel, Mike Turley, brings us every angle (and some VERY useful betting odds) on this week's College and NFL football matchups, Gigi gives us levity and insight on an endless variety of current events and pop culture savvy, and Bobbo's got a new "one-liner" for just about every facet of this week's conversation. And don't forget, DJ PreKay is a creative genius, with a listen to his "bare bones" start at crafting a new Hip-Hop/Gangsta take on ABBA's "Dancing Queen," and of course you'll get our own inimitable take on Music, world news and politics...and a whole "Zip A Dee Doo Dah" vibe! So stop on by, and prepare to be entertained--the Wolfe Pack is in rare form this week, y'all! Glad to have you along. Cheers!

Mamma Mia! It's been 50 years since ABBA, clad in silver platform boots and bright outfits garnished with shiny sequins, won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, effectively catapulting the group toward international superstardom. But at its core, ABBA was about two musically gifted couples who decided to combine their talents. So how did it affect this beloved rock band when several years later, as they were reveling in their success and ‘money, money, money,'  first one couple, and then the second, decided to split?  That's one of the key questions we explore in this nostalgic and lively episode dedicated to one of the most enduring and beloved bands in music history, ABBA. And what better time to pay tribute to the group that created hits like “Fernando” and “Dancing Queen,” sparked a Broadway musical and two films, and in recent years became the subject of a virtual concert experience than on the occasion of this 50th anniversary? No need to take a chance on this episode–it's sure to entertain! If you've been listening to my show for awhile then you've likely heard me speak about my experience of being bullied as a teen and young adult. It's a matter which is near and dear to my heart and one that I try to bring awareness to any chance I get. Which is why I was so excited when my dear friend and previous guest on the show, Amy Adams, shared that her cousin literally wrote and created a play which addresses bullying head on. Mary Ann Mangini is a performer, writer, teacher, musician, and all around hugely talented Woman. She wrote the music and script for an original, anti-bullying musical called You Are Worth It which is the focus for our episode together. On this guest episode, Mary Ann joins me in a collaborative exploration of the nature of bullying; what it's like to experience bulling, how to understand bullying, and ways to overcome bullying. Mary Ann shares about the path that led her to creating this incredible gift of a musical which addresses the growing bullying epidemic, provides solutions for working to eradicate bullying, takes a serious topic and infuses some humor to lighten the mood, and is performed by the very youth and teens who often endure this abuse. Working with young actors on this show allows for a lot of open discussion regarding the topic.  Mary Ann explains how everyone can identify with bullying because It's everywhere, and not just among our young population. She wrote the show because she was bullied as an adult at her first job. After earning her Bachelor's degree in music education at Grove City College, Mary Ann pursued her passion for teaching choir, music, drama, and private vocal lessons at Shenango High School in New Castle.  She also taught high school choir and elementary music in the Riverview School District in Oakmont. In April 2013, Mary Ann released her debut jazz album, Release Me, comprised of popular jazz standards and several original works.  She currently tours the Pittsburgh area as lead vocalist for the high-energy disco band, Dancing Queen. She has performed at venues all over the Pittsburgh region, including Jergel's Rhythm Grille, multiple Atria's locations, the Rivers Casino, the Meadows Casino, the Rivers Club, Eddie V's, Cioppino, Fresco's, the Oaks Theater, the Parlay Lounge, the New Hazlett Theater, and Kennywood. Dancing Queen has won Pittsbugh City Paper's Best Cover Band in Best of PGH for the past three years in a row! Mary Ann teaches voice/piano lessons at her home studio in Cranberry Township, and also serves as the creator/director of the Fantastix youth show choir. In 2017, Mary Ann wrote the music and script for an original, anti-bullying musical called You Are Worth It. The Fantastix has performed this original musical in local Pittsburgh schools in order to raise awareness for the persisting bullying epidemic, as well as to provide solutions to combat this issue.

I want you to take a deep breath… It's only when we focus on our breathing that we realize how important it is that 21% of our atmosphere is made up of oxygen…that is the ideal amount… Drop too, say 15%, and it would cause all sorts of mental and physical impairment…if the oxygen levels were to increase suddenly, we'd suffer “oxygen toxicity,” meaning that our cells would oxidize, leading to exhaustion and death… Meanwhile, spiders, roaches, and other crawly things would grow bigger and bigger because of their biology… if you think we have a wildfire problem now, imagine if those fires had more oxygen as fuel… So, unless you're hoping for a burning planet covered in spiders the size of a compact car, 21% it is… Music is such an integral of our lives that we have no idea how important it is…I can even tell you…a study by Deezer, the French streaming service, says that to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we should listen to 78 minutes of music per day… The study broke things down even further…that 78 minutes should be portioned this way for maximum benefit… ·      14 minutes of uplifting music to exercise your happiness. ·      16 minutes of calming music ·      16 minutes of music that counteracts sadness. ·      15 minutes of motivational music to help with concentration. ·      And 17 minutes of music that will help you deal with anger. A few suggestions come with the study, too. Abba's “Dancing Queen” is an example of the sort of happy music we should appreciate…when it comes to anger management, AC/DC's “Highway to Hell” is about perfect, although certain tracks from Rammstein and Metallica are good, too—and Mozart for some reason… This stuff fascinates me…and whenever I run across a study or some research that connects music and the brain and our overall mental and physical help, I bookmark it…and I've bookmarked so much that we can now do a full program on it… This is another instalment of “The Medical Mysteries of Music” Show contact info: X (formerly Twitter): @AlanCross Website: curiouscast.ca Email: Alan@alancross.ca Learn more about your ad choices.
