In this classic episode from the archive, we're joined by Dr Paul Koudounaris talking about his book ‘Faithful until Death'. As a first in terms of investigating Pet Cemeteries all around the world, Paul admits this was a labour of love of 11 years. Revealing the history of pet ownership as in the late Victorian era industrialisation meant more folk moved into cities, creating a new kind of pet husbandry, which included giving them a 'good' death. Paul explores Cemeteries, and tombs from as far afield as Thailand, across Europe, in the UK and across the USA. We chat about the ridiculous thought that animals do not have souls, as an illogical concept of theology. We talk about the resistance to burying pets in churchyards, and the people who helped make change with setting up/ building dedicated pet cemeteries. As a massive animal lover, Paul became a pet bereavement councillor for several years as well as tracking down the author of iconic poem : The Rainbow Bridge, and in revealing one of the greatest mysteries, of the Paris Pet Cemetery called Le Cimitières des Chiens in Paris where the iconic canine film legend, RIn Tin Tin, is said to be buried. We chat about Tawny the ex circus lion who lived in Beverley Hills and rests in the cemetery in LA, and more! The book takes you on an emotional journey, through which there's comfort in how many have grieved their pets, for a loss that is means losing apart of oneself, and how Pet Cemeteries set in history our love for all animals. As the late Queen famously said: “Grief is the price of Love.” Faithful Until Death is published by Thames & Hudson or you can buy it hereFollow Paul on Instagram Thank you to the good people at Antinol. Tawny and Lisa talk about Tawny's recent Beyond Liquid Courage newsletter, "People Pleasing is Over." She learned through years of recovery and therapy that her people-pleasing is tied to her codependency. Lisa learned in early recovery that if she didn't stop always trying to please others, she wasn't going to be able to stay sober. People pleasing is more nuanced than just doing something for a loved one because you want to. It's about doing something for someone else because you fear disappointing them at the risk of your own mental and physical health. Port wine comes from the Douro Valley, Spain. It wasn't long ago that we tasted a wine from the Douro Valley, Spain. The river continues west through Spain and runs directly through Portugal before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at the City of Porto. This is Portugal's second largest city and the namesake of the wine. Port wine is highly regulated. No other area can produce “Port” wine. After the start of fermentation, and when about half of the sugar has been converted to alcohol, a spirit, normally brandy, is pumped into the juice to stop the fermentation. The result is a sweet and high-alcohol wine. There are two types of port; vintage port and tawny port. A vintage port will happen about 3 out of 10 years and happens when conditions are just right to produce the best port. These ports are produced and bottled after approximately two years. They are often ready to drink after 4 or 5 years, but can normally be aged for many years. Tawny port originally got its name from wine aged so long that it lost its red color and became a tawny brown or tan. Today it is typically labelled 10 or 20 years, or more. Tawny ports are normally smoother than vintage ports. According to the Oxford Companion to Wine, today, Tawny Ports are many times no older than a vintage port and may even include white ports or wine-making techniques to get the desired color. We also want to talk about two varietal wines. First is Tinta Roriz, which is what the Portuguese call Tempranillo. The second variety we want to talk about is Touriga Nacional. This is traditionally the main grape variety used in port wine, but is becoming a more important single varietal wine grape. It has also expanded to France, South Africa, Australia, and the US in recent years. Mainly because it is a heat-resistant grape variety. Tonight, we are enjoying:2019 Ermegeira Tinta Roriz MIA. It comes from the Lisboa region of southern Portugal and has 11.5% alcohol. I purchased the wine at Wine Styles for around $28. It is certified organic and suitable for vegans according to the website. Vivino says the wine is earthy, juicy cherry, boysenberry, Raspberry, slightly grippy. The grapes are lightly pressed to limit extraction. Only grapes from his own estate are used. All stainless steel used I production with no SO2 at all. 100% Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo)10 Year Old Kirkland Tawny Porto. I purchased at Costco for $16.99. Reverse Wine Snob says aromas of prunes, raisins, orange zest, caramel, toffee, some nutty notes, some bourbon and a good bit of heat. Tastes silky smooth, sweet, and fruity with raisiny fruit notes, more caramel, toffee, and nutty notes. Recommends a buy. Pair with a rich dessert. We both loved the Tinta Roriz and gave it a score of 4. This was produced in stainless steel so it is brighter than the typical tempranillo. To me it just tasted fresh and natural. The Port was good and we both enjoyed and we both scored it a 3. Had a very hot aroma, but was smooth and tasty for the most part. This is a nice price for a port and I would suggest you give it a try. You will need to be open to a strong and sweet dessert wine. Next week we are having a mystery show. Join us next week to see what wine we end up tasting.

Hammerstone Meets Woofstock, 20min., Canada Directed by Josh Holliday A film that straddles the line between narrative and documentary, landing squarely on comedy. Steve Hammerstone is a small town radio host and big time buffoon, who's sent to explore Woofstock: North America's largest festival for dogs. Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? My friend and Lisa and I had done these small town radio host characters “Steve and Tawny” on CBC radio and through podcast for many years. Just before the pandemic, we were judges for Woofstock, and had so much fun doing it. Afterwards I had great regret that we had no record of that live event, so I set my sights on the next Woofstock. Unfortunately, COVID-19 came along and threw a wrench in the plan until 2024. I had stayed in touch with one of the founders and organizers over the years, and as soon as I knew a new version was coming, I made sure I was a part of it. I've always loved buffoon comedy. After many years working in radio and audio, I finally got around to fulfilling my high school mantra: “I want to write, act and direct for television and film.” From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? Well, outside of the ideation and desire to do this project, pre-pandemic, the time started ticking as soon as I knew there was going to be a new Woodstock event. So that was probably in February or March of 2024. That set a very specific deadline for the actual shoot day. Woofstock generally happens over 2 days of a weekend. The day I was selected to judge was the Sunday. After the shoot, I worked with an editor to chop it down to under 20. Once that was done did some titles, post audio, and some audio cleanup. Had a friends and family screening on August 28th, so about 7 months in total from pre-production to final cut. How would you describe your film in two words!? Buffoon comedy. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? Ha! This is a tough one, there are a few. The old wig I'd been using for this character for years had gotten really unruly, so I ordered a new one from this company in BC and what they sent was nothing like what was pictured on their website. They did not answer any emails, or calls, and eventually I had to initiate a chargeback process with my credit card company. I had to make do with the old wig, and put a baseball hat on. I have really bad eyesight, and the glasses I'd used in the past for the character were a pair of my dad's from the 80s with no lenses. When I did the Woofstock years ago I remember spending most of the day in character in a literal blur. I hunted online for a pair of glasses that were similar that I could get real lenses put in. I did that – and because of my prescription it took awhile. Well, the joke was on me, because the optometrist screwed up, and the lenses were essentially reading glass lenses – super-blurry except reading. It also detracted from the character, because so much of comedy is in the eyes, and the lenses had a real distorting effect. It was too late to get them changed before the event. The new glasses also just didn't have the same look as my Dad's old pair. (I've since put real lenses in my Dad's vintage frames.)This was all before the shoot!Shoot day was a whole new challenge. We are not slowing down as my Pride Month Feature rolls along with returning show guest Eisner, GLAAD, and Ringo nominated comics writer Steve Orlando hanging out with me to talk about two of his projects dropping with the big two. Last time he was on we were talking about the ongoing Scarlet Witch series which is being continued in a new five issue mini-series The Vision and The Scarlet Witch, recognizing their 50th wedding anniversary which will see the return of White Vision. It's hard to believe their wedding was 50 years ago in Giant Sized Avengers #4. Steve is promising a Lovecraftian slat to the series which I'm personally rather excited about. Recently it was announced that he will also be working on the Magical Mysteries of Shazam on DC Go!, Venom: Original Sin jumps from Marvel Unlimited Online to print, the exciting conclusion of Ripperland who he's co-writing with John Harris Dunning just wrapped up and will be dropping as a trade soon with Dark Horse Comics, and the trade of Avengers Assemble: The Serpent Scenario just hit too. So, Steve is quite the busy guy at the moment. If you want to catch up with him, you can find him on BlueSky or on Instagram. Shark rescue Byron talked about on the show The Vision and The Scarlet Witch From the publisher The next chapter in one of comics' greatest love stories arrives this May! Celebrating the 50th anniversary of their iconic wedding in GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS (1974) #4, Scarlet Witch and Vision are back together in THE VISION & THE SCARLET WITCH, a five-issue limited series by current SCARLET WITCH scribe Steve Orlandoand returning series artists Lorenzo Tammetta and Jacopo Camagni. THE VISION & THE SCARLET WITCH serves as the latest evolution of Orlando's ongoing SCARLET WITCH run, which has successfully redefined the adventures of Wanda Maximoff. Carving out her own path in the Marvel Universe as a solo hero, Scarlet Witch's magic has never been more powerful. But when it comes to helping Vision, she'll need more than strength alone! Befitting their decades-spanning romance, Scarlet Witch and Vision team up for a dramatic saga that will test their souls and break their hearts! The Magical Mysteries of Shazam! From the publisher In The Magical Mysteries of Shazam! by writer Steve Orlando (Supergirl, Martian Manhunter) and artist Giopota, Billy Batson has had to grow up fast. Life with Tawny, a talking tiger and also Billy's adoptive uncle, is humble. It's not always easy! Billy lives with Tawny's other foster children, Darla, Pedro, and Freddy. Despite all he's been through, Billy is willfully hopeful. In addition to all the struggles a blended foster family faces, Fawcett City isn't exactly the safest place to live. It might be a fantastic, whimsical city full of both humans and talking animals, but it's also got a monster problem—in fact, a Monster Society! Soon Billy is granted the ability to say a magic word and transform into a mighty hero! Fawcett City cheers its new champion—and little do they know, he's one of their own. Or do they? Because Billy's siblings are pretty sure they saw him turn into a full-grown superhero. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. What a dangerous time we live in when the President personally attacks artists for speaking against America's current fascist regime. The Boss (Bruce Springsteen) spoke truth to power at a recent London show while Taylor Swift weathered another round of the President's weird obsession with her. Welcome back to the Soul Summit Podcast – Presented by Her Outdoor Journey and proudly sponsored by Maven Optics, Bakcou E-Bikes, HOYT Archery, onX Maps, and Sawyer Products! This week's episode is a beautiful blend of faith, foraging, and the kind of practical wisdom that only comes from living close to the land. We're thrilled to welcome Tawny Leger—a homesteader, herbalist, and mama raising her kids with dirt under their nails and wonder in their hearts. Tawny shares her journey from nature-loving kid to intentional forager, how her faith has shaped her view of creation, and the pivotal moment as a new mom that made her question what she was putting on (and in) her family's bodies. She shares the joys and challenges of homesteading, raising kids outdoors, and what it looks like to teach the next generation about stewardship, simplicity, and healing through God's design. We also talk about ethical foraging in the Pacific Northwest, her go-to remedies for spring and summer, and one of her favorite practical ways to use wild plants at home.
