When photographer Tawny Chatmon creates a portrait, she is doing more than arranging light and subject—she is reconstructing history. Drawing from classical European painting traditions while centering contemporary Black subjects, her work reclaims visual space that has long excluded them. Through layered textures, gold leaf, and painterly surfaces, Tawny creates images that feel both timeless and urgently present. Her portraits challenge the conventions of representation, placing children and families within compositions that evoke Renaissance and Baroque aesthetics while subverting their historical omissions. Rather than treating her subjects as symbols, she honors their individuality, dignity, and complexity. The result is work that feels intimate yet monumental—a visual meditation on legacy, visibility, and the power of self-definition. [Review starts at 4:09 / Interviews start at 58:03] Anthony and Laurie keep the news short this week, but do talk about a new comic series from IDW that covers the unexplored (and very dark) history of why the Klingons are refugees in the 32nd century. The rest of the podcast is dedicated to Starfleet Academy episode 5, “Series Acclimation Mil” and its loving tribute to Deep Space Nine and the Sisko family. As they discuss the episode, they play clips from various interviews with Tawny Newsome and Robert Picardo, then afterwards, the full interview Tony did with Tawny and Cirroc Lofton.

Fortified wines might be some of the most misunderstood wines in the world — often dismissed as “old-fashioned,” too sweet, or too strong. In this episode of Got Somme, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos dive deep into the world of Sherry, Port, and Pedro Ximénez, unpacking why these wines deserve far more attention than they get. From the Sherry Triangle in southern Spain to the steep vineyards of the Douro Valley in Portugal, Carlos breaks down how fortified wines are made, why they’re aged the way they are, and how styles like Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, Tawny Port, Ruby Port, LBV, and Vintage Port all differ. Along the way, Angus shares a deeply personal memory of secretly drinking his grandmother’s sherry after school, while Carlos explains how some fortified wines can literally be hundreds of years old, growing thicker, darker, and more concentrated over generations. They also tackle the big question: Why did fortified wines fall out of favour, and what would it take to make them cool again? If you think fortified wines are uncool, overly sweet, or irrelevant — this episode might completely change your mind. Voice actor and content creator Tawny Platis returns to The Mike Lenz VO Podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about building a sustainable creative career—without waiting around for permission. Tawny shares how she landed her first voiceover job at just six years old, why she stepped away from entertainment to build a "safe" business (spoiler: it wasn't safe at all), and how that business experience became the secret weapon that helped her thrive once she went full-time in voice acting. We also dig into the real role social media plays in today's VO landscape—how Tawny approaches content as creativity (not advertising), why "auditioning all day" isn't always the smartest path, and what it means to build a brand that attracts the right opportunities. Along the way, Tawny talks about the mindset shifts that changed everything: staying consistent, being willing to experiment, learning the business side of VO, and not being afraid to try new directions—even if not every idea lands. In this episode, you'll hear: How Tawny's business background helped fuel her VO success Why the business side is the biggest hurdle for many voice actors What makes content connect (and why audiences tune out "ads") How to keep your brand fresh without losing what makes it recognizable Tawny's evolving perspective on AI—and what matters most moving forward Her best advice for creatives: take control, create your own opportunities, and don't fear being "cringe" Find Tawny online at tawnyvoice.com, and follow her across platforms at @TawnyPlatis (YouTube: @theTawnyPlatis).

This week on the podcast, Patrick and Tracy welcome Daniel H. Wilson, author of Hole in the Sky. About Hole in the Sky: On the Great Plains of Oklahoma, in the heart of the Cherokee Nation, a strange atmospheric disturbance is noticed by Jim Hardgray, a down-on-his-luck single father trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter, Tawny. At NASA's headquarters in Houston, Texas, astrophysicist Dr. Mikayla Johnson observes an interaction with the Voyager 1 spacecraft on the far side of the solar system, and she concludes that something enormous and unidentified is heading directly for Earth. And in an undisclosed bunker somewhere in the United States, an American threat forecaster known only as the Man Downstairs intercepts a cryptic communication and sends a message directly to the president and highest-ranking military brass: “First contact imminent.” Daniel H. Wilson's Hole in the Sky is a riveting thriller in the most creative tradition of extraterrestrial fiction. Drawing on Wilson's unique background as both a threat forecaster for the United States Air Force and a Cherokee Nation citizen, this propulsive novel asks probing questions about nonhuman intelligence, the Western mindset, and humans' understanding of reality. About Daniel H. Wilson: Daniel H. Wilson is a Cherokee citizen and the multiple New York Times bestselling author of techno-thrillers such as Robopocalypse, The Clockwork Dynasty, and The Andromeda Evolution (an authorized sequel to the Crichton classic). He earned a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as Masters degrees in Machine Learning and Robotics. His next novel, Hole in the Sky, is a story of Native First Contact, releasing October 7th, 2025. Wilson lives in Portland, Oregon. In this 2016 conversation, acclaimed comics historian Bill Schelly takes us deep into the life and legacy of Otto Binder, one of the most influential — and too often overlooked — writers in the history of American comics and science fiction. Schelly discusses his expanded biography, Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary, and lays out why Binder's fingerprints are all over the Golden and Silver Age. We cover:Binder's prolific run on Shazam!/Captain Marvel in the 1940sThe creation of Mary Marvel, the Marvel Family, and Mr. Tawny the Talking TigerHow Binder built classic villains like Mister Mind and crafted the landmark Monster Society of Evil sagaHis leap to DC Comics in the 1950s, where he co-created Supergirl, The Legion of Super-Heroes, the Bottled City of Kandor, and helped reshape the Superman mythosBinder's parallel career in science fiction, and how his SF instincts informed his storytelling across both mediumsWhy his influence still resonates with modern superhero comicsThis is a must-listen for anyone who cares about comics history, forgotten giants of the medium, and the creators who quietly built the universes we all take for granted. ► SUBSCRIBE for more deep-dive interviews, comic history talks, and archival creator conversations.

In this episode, Tawny reads her essay “The Luckiest Sister” from the 2018 “Caregivers” issue of Wildfire Journal. Her piece is about the tender space of sisterhood where care runs deeper than routine and obligation. April and Tawny will talk about the touching selfless moment she was shown by her sister, the caregiving that gets overshadowed by cancer, giving back as a caregiver after cancer, and the different ways of showing up for people. They will also discuss Tawny's biggest challenges today as a long-term survivor.More about episode sponsor iRise Above Foundation: https://www.iriseabovefoundation.org/https://www.instagram.com/irise_aboveLearn more about Tawny: https://www.instagram.com/itsjustahiccup/Purchase the “Caregivers” issue of Wildfire Journal: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/shop/p/digital-caregiversBuy the Wildfire book Igniting the Fire Within: Stories of Healing, Hope & Humor, Inside Today's Young Breast Cancer Community: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJVJ629F?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860Get the free Wildfire “Hot Flashes” email newsletter: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/newsletter?rq=newsletterLearn about Wildfire writing workshops: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/workshopsShop Wildfire merch & more: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/shop*Free* Get Wildfire and The Burn freebies here: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/freeMore about Wildfire Journal: https://www.wildfirecommunity.orghttps://www.instagram.com/wildfire_bc_magazine/https://www.facebook.com/wildfirecommunityInformation on submitting your story for consideration to be published in Wildfire Journal: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/submissions

Please enjoy the premiere episode of Tawny's new (additional) podcast with her friend Katie of Online Bullshit Pod.You cannot have a podcast about being a hater and not h8 on one of the most talked-about people of our time: Taylor Allison Swift. In the premiere episode of h8rs we attempt to unpack what makes Taylor Swift so divisive. With one of the most successful music careers in history (that continues to grow) it would be silly to say that Taylor isn't talented, but exactly what that talent is seems to be a popular debate online.Since The Life of a Showgirl dropped, the internet has been ablaze with new conversations about Taylor's very public life and the possibility of her entering her conservative, MAGA era.Do these critiques and theories have merit, or is the internet just full of misogynstic, uneducated haters that are hellbent on taking down the most popular woman in the world? As two millennial shit talkers, we couldn't help but wonder. Please enjoy our thoughts on Taylor Swift, you'll h8 them.Follow h8rs on InstagramFind Katie on Online Bullshit

Tawny and Lisa talk about Tawny's recent Beyond Liquid Courage newsletter, "People Pleasing is Over." She learned through years of recovery and therapy that her people-pleasing is tied to her codependency. Lisa learned in early recovery that if she didn't stop always trying to please others, she wasn't going to be able to stay sober. People pleasing is more nuanced than just doing something for a loved one because you want to. It's about doing something for someone else because you fear disappointing them at the risk of your own mental and physical health.
