On Nov. 8, 1992, Angela "Mischelle" Lawless was murdered on the exit ramp of the interstate near her home in rural Missouri. Less than two years later, an 18-year-old man named Josh Kezer was convicted of the crime. Kezer was exonerated in 2009 on an "actual innocence" ruling. This podcast examines the investigation of the murder, and whether law enforcement intentionally convicted an innocent man while protecting the state's star witness from suspicion. This podcast is hosted by a veteran journalist and is based on original reporting, interviews and thousands of pages of records. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-lawless-files/support
Former sheriff Rick Walter explains some of the physical evidence that discredits Mark Abbott's story; we review Judge Callahan's ruling; read some troubling emails where Mark Abbott shames the victim.
Among the questions: Is there enough evidence for a conviction? What were the roles of the responding officers? Was DNA taken from Kevin Williams?

Former chief deputy Tom Beardslee gives his account of what happened in the moments following his first interview with Mark Abbott. Full interview can be found at www.thelawlessfiles.com with an access pass.
