In this insightful episode of the Intentional Agribusiness Leader Podcast, host Mark Jewell sits down with Sean Vanslyke, CEO of SEMO Electric Cooperative. They dive into the essential role of electric cooperatives in rural communities, the unique challenges of leading a people-centered organization, and how intentional leadership shapes a thriving work culture. Sean shares his personal leadership philosophy and discusses how empathy, vulnerability, and intentional actions make a profound impact on his team and the community he serves.Key Takeaways:Making Today Better than Yesterday: Sean talks about his daily approach to intentional leadership, focusing on improving each day not just for himself but for others. His goal is to help people achieve things they never thought possible by creating a supportive and empathetic environment. The Role of Electric Cooperatives: SEMO Electric Cooperative serves five counties in Southeast Missouri, providing both electricity and broadband services. Sean explains how co-ops reinvest profits into their communities, having given over $20 million back to members since 1995, and how broadband has been a game changer for rural areas, allowing them to compete on a global stage.Empathy as a Leadership Tool: Sean emphasizes the importance of knowing your people and their personal struggles and triumphs. He shares how empathy drives his leadership style, from celebrating milestones like new babies and marriages to supporting staff dealing with illness or loss. He believes that understanding people's "why" is key to building a cohesive and motivated team.Building Intentional Culture: Sean discusses his leadership philosophy around creating a culture where employees are "missed but not needed." He introduces six guiding principles that he instills in every team member from day one: Be Early, Smile, Act Safely, Move with Purpose, Don't Gossip, and Give Thanks. These simple yet powerful principles help foster a strong, intentional culture at SEMO Electric.Facing and Overcoming Challenges: Sean shares some of the biggest hurdles in his career, from self-doubt to dealing with difficult situations like employee theft. He highlights how tough decisions, while painful, are necessary for maintaining integrity and building trust within an organization. The Joy of Watching People Grow: One of Sean's greatest successes as a leader is watching people achieve things they didn't think possible, whether it's in their personal or professional lives. He likens this to coaching young athletes who get a chance to shine in a new role, reflecting the same sense of pride when his team members rise to new challenges.Notable Quotes:"I encourage people to be missed, not needed. When you leave, people should say, 'When Mark was here, we did this,' not 'We need Mark to unlock the door.'""You have to have empathy as a leader. People come to work to provide for their families, and sometimes they come to work to get away from their family challenges.""We're always interviewing for jobs, even if it's just seeing who walks into the lobby. You never know who you might meet or how someone might surprise you."Join us for a thoughtful conversation on leadership, empathy, and creating intentional work environments. Whether you're managing a small team or a large organization, Sean Vanslyke's insights on leadership will inspire you to make a greater impact every day.

This new show, The Provocateurs, displays paintings inspired by Jackson's study of a 1939 sharecropper demonstration in Southeast Missouri, near where he was raised. Welcome to the Personal Development Trailblazers Podcast! In this episode, we uncover the secrets to transforming your life by starting with the most important person—yourself. From a small town in Southeast Missouri, Jen Hall had always been fascinated with horses, her first experience was to ride a Budweiser Clydesdale at the age of 4. Her career with horses, however, did not begin until the age of 30. After a few lessons at a traditional barn, Jen discovered “natural horsemanship”, a way of training horses that put the horse first and developed a relationship with the animal. She realized there was something to this and quickly developed her career with horses by studying with some of the best horsemen in the world. In 2011, she attended a UPW and was blown away at the parallels between her training with horses and what Tony was teaching with humans. The similarities were profound and Jen knew the worlds of horses and personal development needed to be brought together. Over the next decade, Jen immersed herself in understanding the deeper way horses teach humans. And after years of research and training, Jen launched Zenerjen and her Equine Assisted Personal Development programs using horses rescued from abuse and neglect to help transform lives of people with their own stories. Jen is now looking to move to a new facility that can continue this critical mission to save the more than 80 thousand horses sent to slaughter every year and impact more lives with her online programs, seminars and retreats. Every now and then I come across someone I hear about or notice online or through other contacts and I think "I need to know this person." That's how I felt about this week's guest Adrienne Ross. We share so many interests: leadership, speaking, we're both authors, we're both podcasters, we're both former journalists, we're both English majors, and, probably most importantly, we're both huge fans of the WNBA ("the W") and the Indiana Fever, thanks to Caitlin Clark. Now a resident of Southeast Missouri, Adrienne is the author of an inspirational book entitled Push Your Way to Purpose: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You're Meant to Be. Filled with stories from her own life, it provides tools to help people fulfill their purpose. Adrienne is also the author of two illustrated books of humorous quotations and stories, #AuntAlma Unleashed: Old, Bold, and Out of Control and #AuntAlma: Raisin' a Little Hell Heaven on Earth. Both are filled with common sense, comedy—and a little bit of chaos—straight from her real-life aunt, Alma Ross. Through Adrienne Ross Communications, Adrienne speaks at schools, churches, and national and international service organization conferences. She facilitates empowerment workshops and conducts seminars based on Push Your Way to Purpose. She also teaches courses via her online school, ARC Academy. As a John Maxwell-certified speaker, trainer, and coach, Adrienne offers presentations, keynote addresses, and coaching, providing leadership training, inspiration, guidance, and accountability to groups and individuals. During this conversation, we share our perspectives and our opinions about everything from leadership to basketball to politics, as well as some of the mechanics of podcasting. The Adrienne Ross Show is her podcast on podcast platforms and YouTube. You can find more about her at AdrienneRossCom.com.

How about sub-contracting as a corporate pilot as your form of off-farm income? Seem impossible? I would have thought it was unrealistic until I interviewed today's guest, Andrew Ambrose. Andrew owns his own business, Fly Twins LLC, and he farms 750 acres in Southeast Missouri in addition to that. If that is not enough, he also owns his own excavating company. As Andrew put it, it would not be uncommon to see him flying a corporate customer across the country in the morning and driving a combine that evening. This is an interesting way to producing off-farm income.

I LOVE today's convo with burnout recovery coach and Enneagram expert, Hillarie Kay. Not only does she have deep personal experience with burnout (her very first story is about winding up in the hospital with a presumed heart attack, only to think, "I don't have time to rest, give me drugs!")... she has a deep understanding of what drives us to burnout in the first place. If you've ever found yourself wondering if there's more to life than "rise and grind," this one's for you. Can't-Miss Moments from This Episode:The surprising reason most affirmations DON'T work (and what you can do instead to help reprogram your brain)... To follow or not to follow: Hillarie and I reveal how we decide whether to take a "guru's" advice or follow our own guts (this one is so simple, yet most people won't do it)... Bad news: all the growth strategies work. Good news: all the growth strategies work. Now what are you going to do about it?"You attract how you act" - Hillarie's BRILLIANT and catchy mantra will help you spot what you're doing to bring people to your world... for better or worse. The shocking reason a lot of businesses fail (and it has nothing to do with capital, or clients, or any of the typical "success" metrics)...Hillarie's bio:I'm Hillarie Kay a burnout recovery coach, speaker, trainer, and author. Prior to becoming a third-generation business owner, I forged my path in corporate America, specializing in public relations and marketing. In 2016, I established a full-service marketing agency. In 2020, I underwent a pivotal career transition, delving into the realm of business coaching using the power of the Enneagram personality framework to guide entrepreneurs and teams toward greater success. Since then, I've coached and collaborated with a diverse range of entrepreneurs and teams, spanning from innovative startups to industry giants within the Fortune 100 space. My passion lies in supporting high achievers, corporate executives, and teams in their quest to prevent burnout, enhance communication, and optimize performance through the transformative lens of the Enneagram. My husband, two sons, three stepsons, and I split our time between Southeast Missouri and the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina. I'm obsessed with the 60s and 70s and you can often find me in antique and thrift stores searching for that perfect vintage outfit or furniture piece!Resources and links:Hillarie's WebsiteHillarie's BookHillarie on InstaHillarie on LinkedInSupport the showLet's collab: Book a chat Work with Angie Get the PTKA book Let's connect: Angie's FB Page Angie on IG Angie on YT I find a lot of my guests via PodMatch. Tonight's first guest, Ken, had his first Bigfoot sighting in 1972. Ken was a cub scout at the time and had gone on a camp out, in Southeast Missouri, with his pack, when he had that sighting. He and the other members of his pack had some free time, one of the days while they were on the outing, so he and friend decided to head out and explore the woods around their camp. After walking for about 20 to 25 minutes, the two of them came to a fence. The fence marked the border of the state park they were camping in. Being a state park, there was, obviously, no lack of forest for them to explore. They easily could have turned back and explored for days, in the park, without walking over the same ground. They decided to climb over the fence and keep going, though, and that's a decision they would both soon come to regret. Tonight's second guest, Owen, has several family members who have had Sasquatch sightings. For years, all he could do was sit and listen to them talk about the sightings and experiences they'd had. Most likely, all of them have seen the same white Sasquatch that was, apparently, hanging around their area. One night, though, when Owen opened up his front door, he got a big surprise. From that moment on, seeing a Sasquatch wasn't something only his family members had experienced. He'd now had a sighting of his own.
