In Episode 108, Attorney Charlie Weiss shared the wrongful conviction and exoneration of Josh Kezer, a man who spent sixteen years in prison for a murder he didn't commit. That interview led to a compelling conversation with former Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter. Rick shares his harrowing experience of discovering the body of Mischelle Lawless in 1992 and the subsequent investigation, by a previous Sheriff, that led to the wrongful conviction of Josh Kezer. Rick discusses the complexities of the case, his journey through law enforcement that led him to serve three terms in Scott County, and the emotional weight of reopening a case, as now Sheriff, that haunted him for decades. Listen in as we unpack the intricacies of justice, the impact of personal history, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

At a party meeting Saturday, Alex Plechash defeated David Hann, the party's chair for the past three years. And last week, President Joe Biden commuted the federal prison sentences of more than 1,500 people — but not everyone is happy with the decision. One person whose sentence was commuted was Jim Carlson. In 2014, Carlson was convicted of selling illegal synthetic drugs from his Duluth head shop. On Facebook over the weekend, St. Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsey called Biden's decision “frustrating.” Ramsey wrote that Carlson's actions “contributed to the spread of addiction (and) increased crime.”This is a MPR News morning update, hosted by Phil Picardi. The trailing candidate in a narrowly decided Minnesota House race is asking a court to declare the seat vacant after 20 ballots were discovered missing. Republican Aaron Paul has formally filed his legal challenge of the November election in the Shakopee area, which resulted in DFL Representative Brad Tabke prevailing by 14 votes. Also, state Sen. Omar Fateh has entered the field of candidates opposing Mayor Jacob Frey who is seeking re-election. This is the MPR News afternoon update, hosted by Emily Reese. Theme music by Gary Meister.
An election contest lawsuit has been filed by the Minnesota House Republican candidate Aaron Paul in Scott County. It seeks to block an apparent win by the Democratic incumbent Brad Tabke by having his election certificate withheld and the seat declared vacant. That's after Scott County acknowledged last week that about 20 ballots were accidentally discarded without being counted. Tabke's margin of victory was 14 votes. It's all intensified further by an election that left the state House of Representatives split down the middle for 2025. And the Scott County race isn't the only district that could push the house to one side or the other. To explain further, MPR News senior politics editor Brian Bakst joined the program.
Minnesota Republicans say it's impossible to definitively say who won a pivotal state House race after officials detailed an absentee ballot mishap. Scott County officials disclosed today that 20 absentee ballots were accidentally discarded in October and are unlikely to be retrieved. That's more than the 14-vote margin for the declared winner, Democrat Brad Tabke, over Republican Aaron Paul. And the Minnesota Court of Appeals is the next stop for a challenge to the Office of Cannabis Management's handling of social equity license applications. Those stories and more in today's evening update from MPR News. Hosted by Emily Reese. Music by Gary Meister.

Dr. Jerome Adams authored his 2023 memoire, Crisis and Chaos: Lessons from the Front Lines of the War Against COVID-19. In it, he reflects on his upbringing in southern Maryland and the acute “hurting” among many citizens, rural and poor, dissatisfied with the status quo. Profoundly impactful to his tenure as Indiana State Health Commissioner was managing the opioid, Hepatitis C, and HIV outbreaks in Scott County, IN. As U.S. Surgeon General, he carried forward his enduring commitment to the overdose reversal drug, naloxone. During Covid, politics and toxic partisanship severely hampered the US response. “We keep playing whack-a-mole.” Upgraded communications were urgently needed. The attacks from within the Trump White House upon Dr. Fauci were paralleled by attacks on public health officials at state and local levels. Give a listen to learn more.

Stanley Eric Goodman was born on July 6, 1963 to Willard and Essie Goodman in Scott County, Tennessee. He was married at a young age to Sherry Goodman and was a father of 3. When Stanley and Sherry split, Sherry moved to Cleveland and the 2 children spent time with both their mother and father. Terri Sue Lawson Goodman was born February 10, 1963 to Clifford and Mary and was described as a sweet and sensible person who had overcome a tragedy in her 20's. Terri Sue was almost killed in a car crash in 1985, which had her hospitalized for months and years of therapy to learn how to walk and talk again. She was never able to work after the accident but she eventually met Stanley. And they married. In February of 2000 DCS was called to the Black Fox Elementary School where 8 year old BG had confided in her teacher about the sexual abuse she was receiving at the hands of her step father Hubert. Hope Tharp, the Child Protective Services team leader in Cleveland, Tennessee, responded to a courtesy request from the Scott County Department of Children's Services to investigate allegations of sexual abuse of B.G. by her stepfather. Ms. Tharp interviewed B.G. and B.G.'s mother. As a result of the reports and the investigation, the decision was made to remove B.G. and two other children from the Sexton home. Hubert explained that B.G. was getting this information from her sister and her father saying, Mr. Goodman had told BG to say those things so he could get full custody of the children. On May 16, 2000, Bradley County Sheriff's Detective Tony Alvarez had responded to a complaint initiated by a teacher at the Black Fox Elementary School. Along with DCS, Detective Alvarez spoke with B.G. regarding the allegation. He later spoke with Hubert regarding the allegation and advised him of his Miranda rights. Hubert Sexton waived those rights and signed a written waiver. Mr. Goodman was not too happy about that arrangement and he was just getting the children to trump up some false allegations of improper sexual conduct. On May 20, 2000, Hubert and Preston went to work around 8:00 a.m. They left work around 12:30 p.m. Hubert drove Mr. Adams to the Budget Inn, where Mr. Adams was living at the time. Around 6:00 p.m. Hubert went to Maxi Muffler to visit with Clinton Daniel Mason, a mechanic at the Cleveland store. He asked Mr. Mason for his gun, a .22 rifle. Hubert. When they arrived at The Muffler Shop, Hubert informed Mr. Mason that he had to "take care of some business in Scott County." E.G. accompanied the Strunk family to the races. Due to rain, the races were cancelled and the family returned home around 8:30 p.m. The Strunks took E.G. to her home around 11:00 p.m. Vella Strunk observed that no lights were on in the house. Vella Strunk remained in her car while E.G. went inside the house to get her some coffee. After E.G. returned with her coffee, Vella Strunk went home. EG then went back inside, went to her room and fell asleep for the night. The next morning, Vella Strunk telephoned her brother, Stanley Goodman. There was no answer at the Goodman residence. Within ten minutes, E.G. telephoned Vella Strunk, crying. E.G. told Vella that her father and stepmother were still in bed and that they had blood on them. Vella Strunk drove to her brother's home where she discovered the bodies of Stanley and Terry Goodman. She then called the police. The jury found, as to each count of first degree murder, that the proof established the aggravating circumstance that the murder was committed for the purpose of avoiding, interfering with, or preventing a lawful arrest or prosecution of the defendant or another. The jury determined that the statutory aggravating circumstance outweighed any mitigating circumstances and, therefore, imposed sentences of death for the murders of Stanley and Terry Sue.Support the show

Mark Abbott figured he'd better take the back roads to get home in the early morning hours of November 8th, 1992. He would later claim that he was drunk and didn't want to get another DUI or get cited for driving without a license. When he pulled off of Interstate 55 near Benton, Missouri, he saw a car idling at the top of an exit ramp. He looked in, and realized he'd found a body. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! Our book this week is “The Murder of Angela Mischelle Lawless: An Honest Sheriff and the Exoneration of an Innocent Man” by Stephen R. Snodgrass with Joshua C. Kezer and our guest is Joshua Kezer. We will check in with Josh after we investigate this fascinating book. The body Mark Abbott found was 19 year old nursing student Angela Mischelle Lawless. With all the wisdom of a drunk man, he decided someone else would come by soon, and if the police came looking for him, he'd tell them he was Matt Abbott, his twin brother. If true crime shows had been popular back then, maybe he'd have known that twins don't have identical fingerprints. Someone else did drive and notice the car, but didn't stop in case whoever was inside might be looking for trouble. The couple went to the sheriff's department to tell them the scene needed to be checked out. Deputies found Angela, who went by her middle name of Mischelle lying across the center console with her head on the passenger seat. Mischelle didn't appear to be breathing. Witnesses said that Josh had confessed to them. Despite having alibi witnesses that placed him over 300 miles away at the time of the murder, Josh was convicted and sent to prison. Prison is a rough and dangerous place and Josh had to learn how to survive there. As time passed, he got involved with the prison ministry attending Sunday services and joining Bible Study groups. Josh says in the book that faith became the focus and center of his life, giving him hope for the future, and helping him handle the nightmare that was his present. It was there that he met Jane Williams. Jane was at the prison giving a presentation on devotionals she had written. After meeting they forged a friendship through correspondence. Eventually, Josh trusted Jane enough to tell her his story. Scott County reserve deputy Rick Walter had always believed that the case against Josh was weak. Though neither he nor Jane Williams knew what the other was doing, their combined efforts would change Josh's life forever. It wasn't easy, and he still lives with the trauma he endured spending so many years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. One of the most important things that he learned was the importance of forgiveness. Psalm 109:1-3 Be not silent, O God of my praise! For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. This is a Psalm of David, written when he was at a really low point in his life. Enemies were pursuing him with lies. Josh Kezer knows what that feels like. If you read the rest of this Psalm, you'll see that even in his distress, David left vengeance to God. That's not an easy thing to do at all. It certainly helped David that he cried out to God. It helped Josh that he turned to his faith too. What attacks are you facing where it's really tempting to try to get payback? I hope that Psalm 109 inspires you to let God deal with it. Building a robust multi-faceted business is no easy task, not even for the most seasoned entrepreneur. Creating a business that seamlessly incorporates all of your passions while providing a rewarding and fulfilling experience at the same time is the ultimate goal for many people building a business. Dr. Kristy Sumner has successfully combined her passion for historical stories and paranormal into two businesses: Soul Sisters Paranormal, and The Historic Scott County Jail Museum. The work that she does is totally fascinating to me, but maybe paranormal isn't your jam and that's okay. What stands out the most about Kristy is the way she's created two businesses that flow so well together that allow her to live the life she finds most fulfilling. “If you look at us, just from the outside, it looks like we have a very robust company, but it's just the two of us.” -Dr. Kristy Sumner Key areas we're highlighting in this episode Kristy's first overnight stay in a haunted penitentiary, developing passion and excitement Learning the technical skills it takes to produce the content they want to share How a collaboration turned into a reopening of a historical location with paranormal research Martin Yan, a chef and food writer says, “when you enjoy what you do, work becomes play.” For Kristy, she's allowed herself to lean into her passions for fun, play, and discovery in the presence of her friends. She's turned a corporate background and life as a college professor into a life that is filled with excitement. In a case that has gripped the public's attention, Alexis Saborit, a man previously found guilty of a horrifying crime involving the murder and decapitation of his girlfriend, America Thayer, has now been deemed not guilty because of mental illness in a recent second part of his trial. On July 28, 2021, law enforcement apprehended Saborit concerning the gruesome murder of Thayer, whose decapitated body was found on a sidewalk. Opting for a bench trial over a jury trial in May, Saborit was declared guilty of first-degree premeditated murder by First Judicial District Judge Caroline Lennon, after he initially pled not guilty due to mental illness. According to official reports, the unfortunate day of the incident saw an argument ensue between Saborit and Thayer. The disagreement stemmed from Saborit's refusal to attend a court hearing related to an arson charge. The Saborit case entered a second phase of the trial, aimed at establishing his mental state at the time of the crime, as documented in a court record from Scott County on July 17. During this phase, the court called upon the expertise of two professionals in the mental health field, Dr. Andrea Lovett and Dr. Kathryn Jameson. It's important to note that Saborit's criminal record is extensive, with prior convictions including domestic abuse, domestic battery, and false imprisonment. In a telling incident in 2020, a friend of Thayer voiced concerns about Saborit's escalating physical and psychological abuse to his probation officer, stating that Saborit was experiencing severe mental health issues and expressing fears that Thayer's life was in imminent danger. However, Thayer refuted these claims, insisting that her friend had concocted the story. A significant turning point in Saborit's life was a severe car accident in 2017, where he was intoxicated at the wheel. The incident led to a coma and a traumatic brain injury, following which he reported auditory hallucinations and paranoid delusions. In the wake of his arrest for Thayer's murder, signs of Saborit's severe psychosis became increasingly evident. His thought processes were disorganized, his paranoia intensified, and he became a victim of bizarre delusions, including believing that his prison food was poisoned. Dr. Lovett and Dr. Jameson noted significant signs of mental instability in their interactions with Saborit. Despite attempts to respond coherently to questions, his responses often became jumbled and irrational. Saborit acknowledged the immorality of his actions but also voiced bizarre accusations against Thayer, including claims that she had orchestrated an assault against him. After a comprehensive analysis, Dr. Lovett concluded that Saborit's actions on the day of Thayer's murder stemmed from his mental illness, not the influence of drugs or alcohol, and highlighted his history of psychotic episodes. Dr. Jameson concurred, testifying that Saborit was experiencing genuine symptoms of a psychotic disorder at the time of the offense. Importantly, while Saborit understood the wrongness of his actions, he failed to appreciate their moral implications. Based on these findings, Judge Lennon ruled Saborit not guilty because of mental illness. She ordered his transfer to a facility operated by the Commission of Human Services. This case illustrates the intricate crossroads of criminal law and mental health, highlighting the necessity of in-depth psychological evaluations in violent crime cases.
