But here is the good news. I believe that one day after the midterms Trump will once again go shock and awe for a year, and then back off again in 2028 to get JD or Rubio elected. (For example, I can easily see Trump taking zero drastic action in the near term to further inflame the Minnesota situation, but invoking the Insurrection Act the day after the midterms and sending in the 82nd.) Since the Super Bowl is coming up, consider it this way: In the first quarter, Trump ran up the score. In the second quarter, he went prevent defense to hold onto the lead. After halftime, once again in the third quarter he will run up the score, and then hold the lead in the fourth quarter to win the game. This is not Qtard “trust the plan” nonsense. This is simply good political strategy. Everyone needs to realize two things: (1) the Constitution includes checks and balances that inherently weaken the absolute power of each branch and (2) even though they are in the minority, Democrats still have a HUGE say. Texas has found itself in the spotlight over the past few days, and for pretty interesting reasons at that. First, we saw a Texas special election that flipped a deeply Republican district at the state level. In a seat Donald Trump carried by roughly 17 points, Democrats managed to pull off a low-turnout win. This was not a wave election, and pretending otherwise does not help anyone. Special elections are weird, electorates are tiny, and turnout models collapse. But the direction still matters.However, Republicans continue to rely on a coalition that is extremely Trump-centric. When he is not on the ballot, participation drops, especially among lower-propensity voters. Democrats, by contrast, have been showing up consistently in off-cycle contests. While that does not guarantee success in a general election year, it is enough to justify early anxiety. If Republicans cannot reliably mobilize their voters without Trump himself, Texas becomes less static than it has been for decades.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. Instead, the Texas Democratic Senate primary is rapidly becoming a cautionary tale. Senator John Cornyn's seat is up, Ken Paxton is leading on the Republican side, and Democrats should be salivating. Paxton is polarizing, ethically radioactive, and deeply divisive. In theory, this is the opening Democrats have been waiting for.In practice, the primary is turning ugly. James Talarico, a rising star with genuine crossover appeal, now finds himself in a five-alarm crisis after a viral allegation that he described Colin Allred as a “mediocre Black man” while expecting to face him in the race. The context, the intent, and the precise wording are now almost secondary. What matters is that the damage landed squarely where a Texas Democrat cannot afford it: trust with Black voters.Colin Allred's response was not subtle. He went directly at Talarico, endorsed Jasmine Crockett, and framed the controversy as a racial and moral failing, not a messaging mistake. Talarico's apology attempted to split the difference, acknowledging poor phrasing without directly calling the accuser a liar. That move may have been legally cautious, but politically it validated the outrage. With the primary weeks away and a runoff likely, Democrats are now locked into a prolonged intraparty fight that makes the eventual nominee weaker, not stronger.Zooming out, this is why Texas continues to torment Democrats. Structural conditions occasionally line up. Republican candidates overreach. Demographic change inches forward. But the moment opportunity appears, the coalition turns inward. Instead of clearing the field and running a disciplined campaign against Ken Paxton, Democrats are now litigating identity, intent, and trust in public.The tragedy here is not ideological. It is tactical. Texas Democrats do not need a perfect candidate. They need a boring one who does not give voters a reason to hesitate. Every additional week spent tearing down a potential nominee is a week Paxton gets for free. If Democrats manage to lose this race, it will not be because Texas is unwinnable. In Virginia, Brendan Banfield, the man accused of murdering his wife and a complete stranger, says the prosecution's theory is "absolutely crazy." In Georgia, law student Tara Baker's murder went unsolved for two decades, until the family teamed up with a podcaster to try and solve her murder. Her alleged killer is now heading to trial. Top officials at the Department of Homeland Security will testify in front of the House next month. Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow are all slated to testify February 10 in front of the Homeland Security Committee. Brendan Banfield is taking the stand. His defense attorney made the announcement Friday morning in Fairfax County court, setting up what could be the most critical moment of this double murder trial.But before Banfield gets his chance to tell his story, the defense spent Day 7 attacking the prosecution's digital evidence. Harry Lidsky, a former Department of Justice digital forensics expert, testified that the catfishing theory doesn't hold up under scrutiny.The key moment: Within the same minutes the FetLife account was allegedly created on Christine's laptop, her phone was browsing a Lululemon sale. Lidsky told the jury he believes the same person was using both devices simultaneously. If Christine was actively on her phone while someone was creating a fetish profile in her name on her laptop, the prosecution has a serious problem.Lidsky also pointed out that Brendan and Juliana weren't always home when Christine's devices accessed FetLife or messaged Joseph Ryan on Telegram. And the 45-minute phone call Ryan had with someone he believed was Christine? The prosecution still can't prove who was on the other end.Judge Penney Azcarate—the same judge from the Johnny Depp trial—admonished the defense for disorganization but allowed testimony to continue. A winter storm may delay Monday's proceedings.Banfield has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
