Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to talk about Rainbow “Snowman!” Yes, the former Deep Purple guitarist took Howard Blake's song from the 1982 classic and reworked it as an atmospheric synth and electric guitar anthem!Rainbow was formed in 1975 by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore after he began to tire of Deep Purple and the band's changing musical direction. Deep Purple had already replaced Ian Gillan and Roger Glover with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, but Blackmore remained unhappy with where the music was headed. What began as Blackmore recording a single with members of the band Elf ultimately grew into a full album and the creation of Rainbow. The band quickly became known for its larger-than-life live shows, whose centerpiece was a massive computer-controlled rainbow containing some 3,000 lightbulbs and stretching 40 feet across the stage. Rainbow also became notorious for its revolving door of musicians, with original vocalist Ronnie James Dio departing in 1978 over disagreements about the band's increasingly commercial musical direction. After further lineup changes, Joe Lynn Turner eventually took over as lead singer, ushering in Rainbow's more radio-friendly early-'80s era. That lineup would lead to Bent Out of Shape, released September 9, 1983, which featured the song in question as the album's ninth track.Rainbow's instrumental “Snowman,” featured on their 1983 album Bent Out of Shape, is based on “Walking in the Air,” the haunting theme written by composer Howard Blake for the beloved 1982 animated film The Snowman, itself adapted from Raymond Briggs' 1978 children's book. Blake had actually composed the melody around 1970 before later adapting it for the television special, where it became the musical centerpiece of the story. The Snowman—which went on to become a seasonal television favorite in Britain and Finland—follows the fleeting adventure of a young boy and the snowman he brings to life. During their magical flight to the North Pole, “Walking in the Air” accompanies the pair as they soar through the night before attending a gathering of snowmen and meeting Santa Claus and his reindeer. In the original film, the song was performed by St. Paul's Cathedral choirboy Peter Auty, whose recording was later reissued in 1985 and 1987. Ritchie Blackmore was captivated by the composition's haunting, melodic beauty and, having long enjoyed adapting classical and traditional melodies into rock instrumentals, transformed Blake's delicate vocal theme into “Snowman.” Rainbow's version builds atmospheric tension around the familiar melody before giving Blackmore the opportunity to let loose with a soaring, emotional electric-guitar lead—turning one of animation's most delicate Christmas themes into a distinctly Rainbow instrumental.Synth flute? A former Disney Imagineer and longtime voice in the immersive entertainment sector, he advises operators, developers, and brands across theme parks, location-based entertainment, and the rapidly growing world of social entertainment. Through his writing and analysis, he's known for digging into what works, what fails, and why, then translating those lessons into practical guidance for leaders trying to keep pace with changing guest expectations. In this interview, Kevin talks about the next phase of immersive technology, transmedia, and embracing your audience. Next phase of immersive technology “What I was talking about seven years ago about the emergence of VR has been superseded by the adoption of XR.” Kevin frames “immersive” as an elastic term that stretches from Pepper's Ghost to projection systems to today's immersive display tech. What's different now isn't that immersion suddenly exists, but that audiences expect more agency inside experiences. He points to the rise of social entertainment and competitive socializing, where gamification is being applied to restaurants, bars, and hospitality concepts because people want more than a place to sit. They want something to do together. He also stresses that the industry is exiting the hype cycle and entering a more disciplined era. The goal is less about chasing shiny tech and more about understanding what works operationally, financially, and emotionally. In his view, the “next phase” is building experiences that hold attention, reduce friction, and create repeat-worthy fun, not just novelty. Transmedia “Transmedia means the ability for a brand or a narrative to circumvent multiple delivery platforms.” Kevin describes transmedia as the movement of a story or brand across formats, from screen to physical place and back again. He points to examples like Netflix House and LEGO Discovery Center as signs that entertainment IP is increasingly becoming something you can step into, not just watch. He also reminds listeners that this isn't a brand-new strategy, using Walt Disney as an early blueprint for extending storytelling across film, television, and the theme park environment. At the same time, he cautions against treating IP like a magic upgrade button. A mediocre experience wrapped in a famous brand is still a mediocre experience, and he argues that investors often favor IP because it feels safer, even when the fundamentals aren't there. The real requirement is a clear guest experience and narrative path people can easily understand and enjoy. Embracing your audience “You don't just chuck it in because everybody's doing it. You're going to have to understand your audience.” Kevin's bluntest point is that many projects fail because leaders build for trends instead of building for guests. He describes “spaghetti moments” where operators throw technologies into a concept hoping something sticks, then quietly move on when it doesn't, without extracting lessons. His post-mortem approach is about finding the real causes, including mismatched business models, poor repeat-visit planning, and ignoring frontline feedback. He also calls out the habit of using technology to mask unresolved fundamentals. If an attraction choice is driven by copying competitors, or if leadership avoids the hard truths in reviews and exit interviews, the problem isn't a lack of gadgets; it's a lack of listening. Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to talk about The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers “Marshmallow Trees!”Zozo and Rangers Niko and Buzzwang introduce kiwi  trees to the planet Granna. Unfortunately, the planet's two suns have an adverse effect on the trees, making them complete their entire cycle of growth in one night. It also causes them to grow 100 times their normal size. The planet will be overrun by the trees if a genetically engineered breed of gobblebugs aren't used to destroy the crop. Rangers Doc and Zachary Foxx arrive with the bugs and to provide support for Niko and Buzz. Consequently, the residents of Granna don't think the bugs are a good idea at all. It turns into a free for all, as everyone commandeers everyone else's vehicles trying to stop the Rangers from releasing the bugs. Foxx activates his series-5 implant and uses his bionic arm blaster to stop the chase. The bugs eat the trees and turn into flowers.Marshmallow trees? Yep. Cybernetically enhanced space cowboys? Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, I spent my youth there before migrating to Pennsylvania in 2000. It was in the vibrant artistic environment of Philadelphia that I found inspiration in street art and historical murals. My art journey began during my time at Springfield High School, where I explored multiple mediums and discovered the joy of creating through various projects. After a brief hiatus, I rediscovered my love for art in 2008, particularly using oil-based medium, which reignited my creative energy. Each body of my work draws inspiration from both history and everyday experiences, crafted to evoke subjective interpretations in the viewer. I firmly believe that art is universal and shaped by each individual's life journey. As an introspective figurative artist, I incorporate natural motifs and floral fabric patterns to express communication and determination in the figures' pursuit of a better life. Each stroke of paint exudes boldness, confidence, and strength, aiming to inspire those who encounter my art. I draw inspiration from a multitude of artists, including Dali, Kevin Williams, Charly Palmer, David Hockney, Basquiat, and Amy Sherald, while also embracing techniques from different eras, like gold leaf and textures. Since moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2018, I have become actively engaged in the local art community, showcasing my work in various galleries, such as Mint Gallery and Future Dead Artist Gallery.
