In December 1996, 32-year-old Sharon McLane was brutally murdered inside her Bedford, Texas apartment. Two years later, her friend John Earl Nolley was convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison. The Nancy Guthrie case forced a question that should terrify anyone paying attention: what happens when an investigation is run by the wrong people from the start — and instead of finding the truth, the system builds a case around the most convenient answer?In Tucson, the Guthrie investigation has raised questions about whether underqualified personnel handled the most critical early hours. In Delphi, Indiana, that same kind of failure played out across five years — and may have ended with the wrong man in prison.On February 13, 2017, teenagers Abby Williams and Libby German were murdered near the Monon High Bridge Trail. Libby had the presence of mind to record her killer approaching on her phone. Within three days, a man named Richard Allen walked into a local office and voluntarily placed himself on that trail, at the right time, in the right clothing. That tip was misfiled. It sat in a box for five years while Allen lived in Delphi and worked at the local CVS. The Carroll County Sheriff's Department — a tiny agency that had never handled a double homicide — was overwhelmed from day one.When Allen was finally arrested, he was held in solitary confinement for thirteen months. Mental health evaluators found him gravely disabled. He began confessing — but according to the defense's appeal brief, he told his psychiatrist he shot the girls. They were killed with a blade. No DNA linked him to the scene. No murder weapon was recovered. The judge excluded an alternative suspect theory, a composite sketch that doesn't resemble Allen, and expert testimony challenging the bullet evidence. The jury convicted in under four hours.Just as the Guthrie case raises questions about whether loyalty appointments shaped who was in the room, Delphi forces the question of what happens when the wrong people build momentum in the wrong direction — and the system can't course-correct. Allen's appeal is before the Indiana Court of Appeals. The result was The Wrong Man, a bracing drama based on the real-life false arrest of Queens musician Christopher “Manny” Balestrero. Manny's ordeal is part of a larger story of other miscarriages of justice in the first half of the twentieth century.  In Nothing to Fear: Alfred Hitchcock and the Wrong Men (Fayetteville Mafia Press, 2023), attorney Jason Isralowitz tells this story in a revelatory book that situates both the Balestrero case and its cinematic counterpart in their historical context. Drawing from archival records, Isralowitz delivers a gripping account of Manny' s trial and new insights into an errant prosecution. Happy Noirvember! On the fifty- third episode of ATFT, the Director of Communications for the Film Noir Foundation, Anne Hockens, joins me in analyzing Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir classic, Double Indemnity! This episode is spoiler- filled. Double Indemnity, according to Anne's friend and the president of the Film Noir Foundation Eddie Muller, marked the beginning of the film noir movement. The film revolves around Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray), an insurance salesman, who one day meets Mrs. Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck), the wife of a customer, in attempt to renew a policy. Their attraction is clear from the moment they first lay eyes on each other and grows stronger with each meeting. When Phyllis suggests she would like her husband dead, they plan “the perfect murder” with the intention of collecting as much money as possible through the "double indemnity" clause in Mr. Dietrichson's insurance policy, unbeknownst to him, but they have to get past Neff's intuitive and deeply analytical boss Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson) to pull it off. Double Indemnity is regarded by many still to this day as one of, if not the best film, within the noir genre. The Film Noir Foundation's 23rd annual Noir City Film Festival will take place in Oakland, California from January 16- 25. Over this week, 24 films will be screened but those titles won't be announced until the night of Noir Christmas which will take place in Oakland on December 17.
