You know how to get things done. You know how to protect the people you love. But when it comes to raising emotionally strong kids, the very instincts that built your success can quietly hold them back. In this episode of Unlearning Stress with Mischelle, we're unpacking a blindspot high-achieving women rarely talk about out loud: The difference between protecting your child and preparing them for life. We'll dive into: Why shielding kids from discomfort weakens emotional growth The brain science behind why struggle strengthens resilience How to shift from “rescue mode” to “coaching mode” without losing connection Practical ways to start letting your child build strength—starting today This isn't about guilt. It's about clarity. It's about loving them enough to let them grow strong, not just safe. Comment below: What's one small way you're choosing preparation over protection this week? You're doing the work. You're holding the space. You're keeping the room calm—even when your world is anything but. But behind the composure, there's a cost. Because when you're constantly adapting to other people's chaos… You start to disappear in your own life. In this episode of Unlearning Stress with Mischelle, we're naming what most leadership spaces ignore: Emotional inconsistency isn't just frustrating. It's exhausting. And it's one of the most overlooked causes of the burnout, doubt, and erasure so many women are silently navigating. You'll learn: Why shape-shifting to survive leadership chaos drains your clarityHow inconsistency creates internal instability—even for high-performersWhat it really means to lead without losing yourselfAnd how to begin reclaiming your emotional center in a world that keeps shifting the rules You're not overreacting. You're functioning in a world that keeps pulling the ground out from under you. This is your call to anchor. You're not indecisive. You've just been conditioned to override your own clarity. In this episode, Mischelle breaks down why high-achieving women often doubt their inner knowing, not because they lack intuition, but because chronic stress, emotional burnout, and people-pleasing have rewired their nervous systems to seek approval over alignment. You'll learn how to recognize the emotional static that blocks discernment and what it looks like to return to whole-life decision-making that's grounded, clear, and honest. → Ready to stop managing stress and start mastering what's actually underneath it? You weren't created to parent through pressure, but for so many high-achieving women, that's exactly what it's become. In this episode, Mischelle dismantles the emotional conditioning that taught you to prove your love instead of trusting it. From childhood messages like “Be good” and “Don't talk back” to the guilt-ridden moments where you're physically present but emotionally gone. This conversation goes beneath the surface to expose what performance-based parenting is really costing you. You'll walk away with a new lens, deeper permission, and a quiet invitation to return to love-led connection without the performance.

In 1992, 19-year-old Mischelle Lawless' bloodied body was found in an abandoned car on a desolate strip of highway in Benton, Missouri. Four months into the investigation, investigators got a break: 17-year-old Joshua Kezer had been held briefly in the county jail on assault charges, where, according to several inmates, he confessed to killing Lawless. Kezer was convicted and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Sheriff Rick Walter re-opened the case in 2005. Judge Richard Callahan agreed to review the case and, citing prosecutorial misconduct and a lack of evidence, declared Josh Kezer an innocent man. But someone killed Mischelle and high on the list of suspects is a local man, Mark Abbott, who was once a star witness for the prosecution. “48 Hours" correspondent Erin Moriarty reports. Book 2 - The Murder of Angela Mischelle Lawless by
Believing there is no time to waste when it comes to reaching people for Christ, Reaching Souls International™ is proud to announce they have added the support of women National Missionaries as part of their strategy to spread the Gospel around the world. For more than 35 years, Reaching Souls has provided evangelism training, ongoing discipleship and other essential support to empower thousands of National Missionaries around the world to reach their own people with the Gospel. For a long time, cultural barriers and denominational stereotypes that exist in some countries hindered the ministry from formally including women as National Missionaries but it has been a goal to do so for many years. “Everything has its time and recently the idea of women National Missionaries was met with applause by the ministry's Latin American and African leaders,” said Director of Women's Ministry for Reaching Souls, Mischelle Manis. “In January of this year at our annual Summit in Africa, the feedback we heard was, ‘We've witnessed the women in our communities doing the work of the ministry for many years. We are ready!' There is universal agreement that this is the right time to come alongside women and support them as they reach their own people for Christ.” It was during her first trip to Africa in 1990 that God placed a passion for women in Manis' heart, but the doors were still largely closed for women missionaries at that time. As God has steadily positioned Reaching Souls to be able to offer more support to local women evangelists, it has affirmed her vision and confirmed that His timing is always perfect. The ministry believes that partnering with indigenous leaders who are relationally and culturally connected to their communities is not only the most effective way to share the Gospel, but also the most efficient. Across the world, Reaching Souls works diligently to identify local evangelists who have a passion and calling to reach their people for Christ. Reaching Souls has trained women in evangelism for over two decades. “I'm excited to be able to begin supporting the work of women National Missionaries in this new way,” shared Manis. “I have walked together with thousands of godly women to the streets, villages and countryside with the Gospel. Women are strong, bold, and effective evangelists. Women across the globe understand what it's like to feel unseen. Especially those in compromised environments. This gives our women National Missionaries a powerful connection to the most vulnerable in their community.” Reaching Souls recognizes that women are uniquely gifted for the work of the Lord. Often women are the ones ministering to kids in the streets, to those who have been orphaned, and to those who have a mistrust of men. In those situations, women are welcomed. “Women are seen as nurturers and as mommas,” said Manis. “There are places where women can minister that men simply do not have access. As a ministry, we're missing an opportunity to reach people that we could if we add women.”
Mark Abbott figured he'd better take the back roads to get home in the early morning hours of November 8th, 1992. He would later claim that he was drunk and didn't want to get another DUI or get cited for driving without a license. When he pulled off of Interstate 55 near Benton, Missouri, he saw a car idling at the top of an exit ramp. He looked in, and realized he'd found a body. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! Our book this week is “The Murder of Angela Mischelle Lawless: An Honest Sheriff and the Exoneration of an Innocent Man” by Stephen R. Snodgrass with Joshua C. Kezer and our guest is Joshua Kezer. We will check in with Josh after we investigate this fascinating book. The body Mark Abbott found was 19 year old nursing student Angela Mischelle Lawless. With all the wisdom of a drunk man, he decided someone else would come by soon, and if the police came looking for him, he'd tell them he was Matt Abbott, his twin brother. If true crime shows had been popular back then, maybe he'd have known that twins don't have identical fingerprints. Someone else did drive and notice the car, but didn't stop in case whoever was inside might be looking for trouble. The couple went to the sheriff's department to tell them the scene needed to be checked out. Deputies found Angela, who went by her middle name of Mischelle lying across the center console with her head on the passenger seat. Mischelle didn't appear to be breathing. Witnesses said that Josh had confessed to them. Despite having alibi witnesses that placed him over 300 miles away at the time of the murder, Josh was convicted and sent to prison. Prison is a rough and dangerous place and Josh had to learn how to survive there. As time passed, he got involved with the prison ministry attending Sunday services and joining Bible Study groups. Josh says in the book that faith became the focus and center of his life, giving him hope for the future, and helping him handle the nightmare that was his present. It was there that he met Jane Williams. Jane was at the prison giving a presentation on devotionals she had written. After meeting they forged a friendship through correspondence. Eventually, Josh trusted Jane enough to tell her his story. Scott County reserve deputy Rick Walter had always believed that the case against Josh was weak. Though neither he nor Jane Williams knew what the other was doing, their combined efforts would change Josh's life forever. It wasn't easy, and he still lives with the trauma he endured spending so many years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. One of the most important things that he learned was the importance of forgiveness. Psalm 109:1-3 Be not silent, O God of my praise! For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. This is a Psalm of David, written when he was at a really low point in his life. Enemies were pursuing him with lies. Josh Kezer knows what that feels like. If you read the rest of this Psalm, you'll see that even in his distress, David left vengeance to God. That's not an easy thing to do at all. It certainly helped David that he cried out to God. It helped Josh that he turned to his faith too. What attacks are you facing where it's really tempting to try to get payback? I hope that Psalm 109 inspires you to let God deal with it. In the early morning hours of November 8th, 1992, 19-year-old nursing student Mischelle Lawless was found dead, just outside Benton, Missouri, on the side of Interstate 70. Investigators claimed the evidence suggested Mischelle had fought for her life, ran from her attacker and was pursued and caught before being returned to her car where she was shot three times in the back of the head. After questioning Mischelle's boyfriend and friends, the case went cold until April 7th of 1993, when 17 year old Josh Kezer was arrested and charged with the murder of Mischelle Lawless. Kezer's arrest was based on information provided to police by two jailhouse informants, and supporting testimony of a witness who claimed to see Mischelle and Josh arguing at a party the night of her murder, as well as another witness who placed Kezer at the scene of the crime. Despite the lack of physical evidence and the questionable credibility of the witnesses and informants, Josh Kezer was found guilty of second degree murder and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. However, sixteen years later Josh Kezer was exonerated when discovered that the eyewitness placing Kezer at the scene had changed his account of that evening multiple times. Kezer sued for wrongful conviction and won. Host Marvin Stockwell talks to educator Mischelle Brown in Oakland, California. Mischelle's use of risky play to provide better learning opportunities for her neurodivergent students was at first seen as unorthodox, and besides, there was no funding at her school for what she wanted to do. Undaunted, Mischelle crowdfunded the money she needed through ioby, and after after engaging in rock climbing, blowing glass and building forts, students' grades went up and disciplinary incidents went down. In fact, the benefits of risky play are well-documented in research dating back to the 1960s. Now armed with the data to show her program works, Mischelle is looking for new ways to use risky play to improve education.

How powerful is a woman's ability to reach souls? Today's guest, Mischelle Manis, offers insights on the unique ways women are equipped to impact the world with great spiritual impact. Mischelle Manis serves as the Director of Women's Ministry at Reaching Souls International, currently leading its efforts to begin supporting women evangelists around the world to reach their own people for Christ as National Missionaries. This year's travels will take her to Africa five times and Cuba twice.Manis believes that women are of great worth, uniquely created for life and for ministry. She has led teaching teams around the world to train thousands of pastors' wives and women church leaders in evangelism and discipleship. Throughout these years, she has walked countless dirt roads and city streets locked arm in arm with women evangelists around the world, encouraging them and simultaneously learning from them. Manis taught at a high school for several years and homeschooled her four children for many years as well. She has volunteered at dozens of free seminars for college-aged women and women-based nonprofit organizations. Although she has walked through great personal heartache, Manis carries a message of hope, both in this life and in the one to come for eternity. Mischelle is known to call it like it is, but speaks the truth with grace. Manis is a mother of four grown children, the oldest of whom is waiting for her in heaven. She has been married to Dustin Manis, President and CEO of Reaching Souls, for 30 years. Manis recounts how her travels and work with women across the globe revealed we are a strong, resilient, and beautiful gender. She witnessed women who are doing things for the Lord under oppressive situations. Mischelle declares God can and IS using women to change hearts, minds, and generations all over the world. Manis states that Reaching Souls International supports missionaries in Africa, India, and Latin America. The organization promotes nationals reaching nationals in each country, offering education, financial assistance, evangelistic tools, and curriculum to equip local people in ministry. On her first mission trip, Mischelle witnessed the way neighbors shared Christ with friends and the experience changed her heart forever. She believes every woman understands what it is like to feel unseen, helpless, or insecure. These insecurities, she explains, equip us to minister better to others. We see those who are otherwise unseen. We're often willing to go where others will not in order to reach those in need. She also points out that in some situations it would be inappropriate for men to attempt to minister. Women also have a unique nurturing touch required to reach those in need. Mischelle recounts a specific occasion when women left a conference to minister in the local community. Despite a man's warning not to enter the nearby bar, the ladies went in and ministered to the girls inside. The young women received Christ and were delivered from the sex trade. One of the girls went directly to find shelter at a nearby church. Manis cites the scripture in 1 Cor. 12 regarding the need for all members and their specific gifts in the body of Christ. Without women in ministry, the body of Christ is missing out. Our discussion delves deeper into how women can embrace their calling and purpose in ministry with confidence. Manis shares her personal journey of questioning her qualifications to serve God. She sought the Lord in fervent prayer before her first mission trip. She also depended upon the Lord when facing feelings of inadequacy during the season of raising her children. Mischelle relates the intense grief, devastation, and self-doubt she suffered after losing her son to suicide. She withdrew from all ministry, convinced she could not help anyone. But Manis explains how God redeems everything in our lives and builds us into vessels through which He shines. Through pain, suffering, and loss, we can offer compassion to others. We discuss how God often uses us to minister to family, friends, and neighbors right where we are, even if we are not called (or not commissioned in this current season) as missionaries to a distant land. Mischelle notes that walking with Christ doesn't always look like the typical means of ministry from within church buildings or from behind a pulpit. They may not wear capes, but they're quietly overcoming challenges and making our community better. On this episode of Now or Never, we celebrate everyday heroes. Like crossing guard Mischelle Squire, whose dance moves and energy make her a favourite at Toronto's John Ross Robertson Public School. Find out why the whole school recently held a surprise parade in Mischelle's honour. Vivian Ketchum started her education at residential school, and now - at the age of 58 - is graduating from high school. Friends gather to look back on how far she's come, and we surprise Viv with her favourite musician, Ernest Monias. On a particular street in Winnipeg's West End, everyone knew Winston Basque. He'd often be found on his front deck, greeting neighbours and their dogs - and being a connecting point for the community. We join his partner Kathy and dozens of neighbours at a street party held in his memory. Celebrating his younger brother, and hero, has never been more important to Patrick de Belen then it is now. A documentary, memorial walk, and poetry are just part of celebrating Jordan de Belen, who died by suicide 17 months ago. We revisit Dianna Rasing's story, when she got the rare opportunity to thank the young woman who saved her from drowning, exactly one year after it happened.
If you scroll all the way back to Episode 1 you will hear Michelle tell her story at one year of sobriety. Today she shares some sober life tips and what she is learning in year three! We're talking about therapy in recovery today and we do so shamelessly! You will be enlightened and encouraged as Mischelle shares her path in therapy with us.
A look back at our favorite 2021 interviews! MARCH 2021 A gut-wrenching 100% raw & real guest interview. Mischelle tells Lori she has "never ever met a woman who drank like I did." It was ugly; it was hardcore; and it was uncommon for someone who always held a career in executive management where NO ONE talked about addiction. There was A LOT of guilt and shame surrounding her alcoholism. Mischelle considered herself a low-bottom drunk by all definitions imagined. She came from a place of inter-generational trauma involving sexual abuse, suicide, and issues with food. She drank so long and so hard that she completely blew-up her pancreas and now relies on an insulin pump for survival. A chronic relapser, it took Mischelle 17 years to string three sober months together... having 3 years for the first time ever! In her words, "the only thing I ever ever did right, was I kept coming back after, six DUIs, 3 prison bids, 12 ICU stints, and 2 comas; I continued to drink; until I didn't." Joyously so many women are finding recovery early and earlier in their journey before they have fallen to the complete depths of hell.

Child sexual abuse, especially when it involves incest, it not a topic many people want to hear about. But we can't solve problems if we don't know they exist. On this episode of The Unlovely Truth I interview Mischelle Saunders-Gottsch. Mischelle is the founder of Altered Stories Ministries where she helps women share their stories of how God altered their lives. Her Altered Stories podcast has shared stories of triumphing over many types of abuse, something she has personal experience with as well. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), in 2016 Child Protective Services agencies substantiated, or found strong evidence to indicate that over 57 THOUSAND children were victims of sexual abuse. Over one third of those victims were assaulted by a family member. It's not an easy subject to talk about but for the sake of the victims, we must. Please share this episode on social media or with a friend so we can shine some light in an area so filled with darkness.
