This is the stories of Madeleine & AnabelleStacey & SonnyEmma & Luna You will hear from three special Mums sharing and speaking about their babies. Sadly these mums were forced to say goodbye to their babies in a very difficult way, in a way that no parent wishes to be confronted with- Termination for Medical Reasons – often seen in text as TFMR. We present this episode in a different way than previous episodes. The reason for this is we wanted to highlight that no one is alone in this journey, there is a community of women and families, and this is something that many families face everyday in Australia. By having these three Mums share their babies you will hear the highlighted that each families experience with TFMR is uniquely different, but they are united in their heartache of facing such circumstances, their grief, and the lasting love they have for their precious children. This is the story of Pamella and Cohen. Cohen was a bright, loving, honest and warm 17 year old. He had plans for the future, he had a girlfriend, was mature in talking about his feelings and his mental health with his mum and always had a 'thumbs up' for the camera. Cohen died by suicide at home, during his mid year ATAR exams. He had battled anxiety and depression openly and honestly with his family and professional support. Sadly there was a communication breakdown at his school, his diagnosis was communicated clearly from Pamella but unclearly amongst staff. While staff and teachers came to have concerns for Cohens mental health and recognised a young male in crisis- communicated through emails - there was no communication to Cohens family- despite written discussion amongst staff that there needed to be. Cohen's parents Pamella and Chris have continued to be Cohens biggest advocates and in turn advocates for all and are reminding us all that Suicide Prevention is Everyones Business. This is the story of Tracy and Georgia. Georgia's big heart enveloped her family, friends and she had a special place in there for animals too- any human or animal to experience Georgia's love was a lucky being! Georgia had a full life and touched many people far and wide. Sadly her life ended shortly after a motor vehicle accident, with her boyfriend Josh, just before she turned 16. The circumstances surrounding the accident buried her family in another layer of grief. Tracy shares with us how the very essence of Georgia has aided and guided her through this journey of grief and life after the accident. This is the story of Danielle, Jackson & Scruff. Danielle and Scruff are mum and dad to Jackson. In 2016 Danielle and Scruff were living a happy, full, family life. They were living in a small coastal community and were excited to be installing a pool- something they knew would bring many happy family memories. During its construction in 2016 Jackson was run over by a vehicle on their family property and sadly lost his life. On average Driveway accidents or vehicle accidents on private property in Australia take the life of 7 children each year and seriously injure 60. The driver is often known to the family or is family and adds another devastating layer to an already immense grief. Following Jacksons passing Danielle had grave concerns for the health and wellbeing of her husband Scruff- a previously well, healthy and vibrant man. Less than 3 months after Jackson died, Scruff made the decision to take his own life. Danielle bravely and honestly shares her story with us today. You will hear the admiration, love and respect she has for her boys and for herself. This is the story of Amelia and Tommy. Amelia is mum to two sons- Aston and Tommy. Tommy was born unexpectedly and quickly at 17 weeks gestation. Amelia was able to spend some precious time with Tommy, appreciate his features, hold him, create some memories and invite a few family members to meet him- including Aston his big brother. This precious time meant a lot to Amelia and her family who are very early in their journey of grief. Amelia was gracious to speak with us about her birth experience with Tommy and what miscarriage means for her. Miscarriage in Australia is defined as a pregnancy loss before 20 weeks gestation, this happens to 1 in 4 to 1 in 5 pregnancies. It is a grief that many women suffer in silence. A grief that sometimes is pushed to the side as an expected event for a woman to endure and often is accompanied by many unhelpful platitudes. As we go on to talk about, for some woman this may not have significant impact on their lives and for others this will be the beginning of a significant journey of grief and the alteration of life as they once knew it. Many do not get to experience holding, touching, seeing and sharing their baby but everyone who experiences miscarriage understands the emptiness left behind. We thank Amelia for sharing her personal and family story with rawness, honestly and bravery. We know the power of story telling and we know that by sharing your grief and Tommy that you will help many others. This is not a journey any woman should feel alone in. This episode is dedicated to little Tommy and to all the little footprints that may not have walked the earth but have left footprints on hearts across the world. Welcome to author Karina Machado. Karina is a journalist with over 25 years experience and the author of the non fiction series The Spirit Sisters, Where Spirits Dwell and Love Never Dies. She has also recently written Awaken: The search is over with her sister Natalie Grueninger. She is also creator and host of two podcasts- The Spirit Sisters and The Ghost Files- highly recommended reading and listening!! Karina is passionate about sharing stories, especially stories of encounters from the other side. Karina strongly believes that love never dies and love is more powerful than death. She has interviewed many people that have received signs, messages and visitations from their loved ones gone before them and the impact that these moments can make on a lifetime in the physical. 3 Many of our guests have shared their own encounters and signs sent from their loved ones and we felt it was an important topic to explore. These signs and encounters are often comforting to those left behind and become treasured moments in time. While many people listening will have had such experiences, many others may not have. As Karina discusses this does not mean our loved ones are not with us or watching over us. they are always around. - We felt this was an important subject matter to cover. The women we have interviewed light up at two points during the time we spend, when they talk about their childs time on earth and when they talk about their child in spirit. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed creating this episode with Karina. Below are the links to Karina's podcasts and website, where you can find links to her books. Kathy's family story may have touched many of our listeners lives already. Kathy and her husband Ralph Kelly together with their children (Madeline & Stuart) were thrust into the media after the tragic 'one punch' homicide of their eldest son and brother Thomas in 2012. After the death of Thomas, life unavoidably changed for the family. Sadly it then set off a chain of events that tragically led to Stuart (their youngest son) taking his own life 4 years later. Kathy and Ralph together have been the faces, the heart and the soul of the Stay Kind Foundation (formally known as the Thomas Kelly Youth Foundation) and the Take Kare safe spaces. There have been so many incredible achievements made out of such tragedy that have and are continuing to make our country a better place for our children. Its been a selfless journey. Today though we are here to talk about Kathy Kelly the mum. The mother in a family of 5. The mum that has endured grief, trauma, heartbreak and pain - in the public eye- and continued to grow as mother and wife to her family. The mum that is shouldering the pain and wounds that society has inflicted on her. As you listen you too will understand how our society and culture let down and did not protect the Kelly boys. Importantly you will learn about Thomas and Stuart's life from their mum Kathy. Chatting with Kathy it is so clear that Thomas and Stuart are part of her and she lights up when she speaks about them. Two young boys that had been loved deeply were growing and developing into young men that held a lot of promise and had a lot to offer our world. While their opportunity in the physical world has been taken away their lives continue to make a big difference. This is the story of Kathy and her sons Thomas and Stuart. The National Centre for Childhood Grief is dedicated to helping bereaved children and their families rebuild their lives, by teaching them how to live with their grief. The Centre was established in 1994 by founders Mal and Dianne McKissock, internationally recognised experts in the field of child bereavement and grief counselling. The National Centre for Childhood Grief is a not-for-profit that operates from 'A Friend's Place' in Sydney- where we are today. The Centre has an experienced team of specialist bereavement counsellors and trained volunteer support workers, led by Clinical Director, Dr Elizabeth Mann , ensuring the effective delivery of these important services. The National centre for childhood grief provides free and unlimited grief counselling for bereaved children aged 3 -18 years. They provide grief counselling to recently bereaved adults on a fee-for-service basis. The centre also provides education and training for individuals, schools and other organisations handling the grief of children and young people. Some of you may have already come across the Centres work through the Play School episode 'Beginnings and Endings' The Beginnings and Endings episode was made in consultation with the National Centre for Childhood Grief, who worked with the Play School team throughout the development of the show. The centre recognised that there is currently very little available to help children experiencing grief and that introducing the subject in a gentle, safe environment, as the playschool episode does, is a great way to help children start to understand life and death. This is the story of Corinne and her family. In 2004 Corinne was 20 years old and living in Melbourne Australia with her boyfriend (now husband) Bodee. She had just deferred her second year of university and was about to start a new job. On the 20th June 2004 Corinne and Bodee had just returned from a short trip to Queensland to visit her Pop who was terminally ill. She was expecting to hear from her Mum soon but instead received a call by another family member. This call was to let her know that there had been a car accident. The car accident had resulted in the devastating death of her Mum (Anne) , Dad (Rick), sisters Brooke and Jade (17 & 14) and Elizabeth- a French exchange student who was staying with the family. Later that evening Corinne learned that the family had been showing Elisbeth around Dalysford on Sunday and their last stop was the Chocolate Mill , they were headed home. Her sister was driving (getting some learner driver experience) and had ended up on the wrong side of the road. The stretch of road wasn't great and it is thought she clipped the edge of the road and overcorrected, a truck was coming the other way and they had nowhere to go. No one in the car survived the crash and there was no medical intervention. Corinne today shares her family with us and how she navigated her way through such unimaginable loss. She also shares how life has evolved for her and what family life means for her today. This episode is a different angle on The Loss Mothers from what we have documented to date. However this is significant story of motherhood and loss. If you would like to hear more episodes like this sign up to become a Patreon at www.patreon.com/thelossmothers . This is the story of Anna and her children Charlotte Leigh and William "Billy" Jacob. At the routine 20 week morphology scan baby Charlotte was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). This is a complex and rare cardiac defect. Anna and Adam were faced with the hardest decision they have ever had to make around their baby's life. Anna shares the loss of her following two pregnancies, an 8 week miscarriage and Billy who was also diagnosed with severe hypoplastic left heart syndrome at 12 weeks. Anna eloquently shares the choices herself and Adam were faced with post the diagnosis of HLHS, the time they spent with Charlotte and her personal journey of grief after loss. She walks us through a beautiful analogy of grief and reads a special piece she wrote after Charlotte and Billy. It was fitting that we recorded this episode on Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day. A day to remember all of the babies- named and unnamed- lost recently or long ago but forever living in the hearts of their families. Anna and Adam would like to sincerely thank their family and friends for all of their support. For the practical help, but most importantly for listening over the years when they needed. Anna would also like to thank the staff at the Royal Women's and Royal Children's Hospital for the amazing care of herself and her family. This is the story of Flavia and her dancing queen Kristy. Flavia shares with us the beautiful spirit of her daughter Kristy. They share an incredible mother/daughter love that shines through so brightly as Flavia talks about Kristy's time spent here. Kristy was developing into a strong young woman, she had immense love for family, friends, shopping, animals and was making her way in the world. She shared a close bond with her older brother Sean and had become a proud big sister to Taylah. In late October 2004 Kristy was 17 years old and was excited to go on a camping trip with her boyfriend, her first time away on her own. Kristy was involved in a jet ski accident that saw her placed in an induced coma. Sadly Kristy's life on earth ended in November 2004, surrounded by those she loved. Flavia shares how grief has altered her forever and changed her perspective on the world around her. She has been able to discover the collateral beauty born through her grief and over the years life has shown her that she has a lot of wisdom to impart learnt from her grief. Flavia explains the touch and hugs are the feelings that are missed the most and the pain knowing that there is no way to have that back. Prior to our recording Flavia shared photos and stories of Kristy. We had a beautiful day together, there was a special energy in the room and we really felt like we got to know Kristy. In the photos Flavia shared of Kristy it was clear she had a smile that makes you smile, she wasn't afraid to show her love for those she loved and there was a sense of happiness and fun within the moments captured in time. She is sunshine. We felt the love. mwah Xo Content warning:- This episode discusses accident and trauma. This content may be distressing for some listeners.
