Are humans distinct from nature? Are there natural limits to inequality? Can you have action without effort? Do bacteria have agency? In the mid-80s, the people who brought us cartoons like G.I. Joe and Transformers asked themselves an important question: Why don't we try selling toys to girls? And sell they did via the magic of Jem: a truly outrageous animated series about a glam-rocking girl group at odds with their bitter rivals, The Misfits. While the series burned fast and bright—and failed to make waves with a revival 30 years later—Jem lives on in our hearts as one of the most delightfully '80s creations ever made (that also happens to be anime). This month, bust out the mascara and fright wigs and get ready to take a trip to the totally radical Reagan era as we look at one of this series' most twisted episodes. To say that a book has changed my life sounds like a cliché. There aren't many that truly do, but Jem Bendell's Breaking Together: a Freedom Loving Response to Collapse is certainly one of them.So when I heard Jem Bendell was coming to Lisbon for the launch of the Portuguese edition of Breaking Together, I had to try to interview him. We recorded this conversation in late 2024, the day after the book launch. My angle, as usual, was personal. Beyond asking Jem about societal collapse—which he's spoken about widely elsewhere—I wanted to meet the human behind the thesis: Who is Jem Bendell? How did he become who he is? How did he get to do this important work? And what does it mean for him to live with more consciousness and wisdom, now?Guest Bio:Jem Bendell is a world-renowned scholar on the breakdown of modern societies due to environmental change. For decades he worked in Sustainable Development—as a researcher, NGO manager, professor, and consultant to businesses, political parties, and UN agencies. In 2012, he was recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and has since become one of the clearest critics of the globalist agenda on sustainable development. In 2018, after a sabbatical studying the latest climate science, he published Deep Adaptation—an academic paper that went viral and is credited to inspiring the Extinction Rebellion movement.Since then, Jem has stepped away from the sustainability industry. He published Breaking Together in 2023, moved to Bali, opened an organic farming school, became a singer-songwriter, and, in his own words, a militant mysticist.Links:* Buy Breaking Together: a Freedom Loving Response to Collapse* Buy Juntos na Rutura, the Portuguese edition of Breaking Together* Download Breaking Together for free* Subscribe to Jem Bendell's blog* Join Jem's monthly Metacrisis meetingsCredits:* Music Audio Producer & Editor: Carlos Sierra* Producer, Writer & Host: Carlota Guedes To hear more, visit www.wakingyouth.org

Cadet Staci Lee joins the crew to review the debut of Starfleet Academy. Set in the 32nd century, the show follows the next generation of Starfleet officers against the backdrop of the Federation rebuilding itself after the Burn. The star of the show is Cadet Caleb Mir, who has a double agenda of finding his long-lost mother, torn from him by the very admiral who is now the school’s chancellor. Britta Phillips has maintained two very different careers for decades - one is all kitsch and the other has a ton of street cred. She starred in that kinda fun, but mostly bad 1988 Justine Bateman movie Satisfaction and was the singing voice for Jem in the Jem and the Holograms cartoon. She also maintained a career in indie rock bands that got a big leg up when she joined Luna in the early 2000s. She and front man Dean Wareham eventually married and the two have been releasing excellent Dean & Britta music while also scoring films and reuniting with Luna occasionally. She joins us this week to discuss all of it. We get pretty deep on her success with cover songs and her approach. She's wonderful! In this episode, I'm joined by Jem from Australia, a homeschooling mom of four navigating autism, ADHD, sensory needs, school refusal, and neurodivergent learning—and doing it all with honesty, humor, and so much heart.Jem shares why her family left the traditional school system, how her kids went from daily meltdowns and sensory overwhelm to peaceful mornings and learning at their own pace, and why unschooling naturally became the approach that finally worked. We talk about: • What homeschooling looks like for autistic and ADHD learners • Why school refusal isn't “defiance”—it's dysregulation • The surprising benefits of late-morning starts, slow mornings, and interest-led learning • How volunteering at an animal rescue farm completely changed her daughter's confidence • Creating sensory-friendly learning spaces at home • Using fidgets, wobble seats, chewing tools, trampolines, and pets for regulation • Transitioning out of curriculum and into a more intuitive, child-led rhythm • How homeschooling reconnects families and helps kids thrive emotionally • The differences between public school vs. homeschool in Australia • What new homeschool parents REALLY need to hear before they beginIf you're parenting a neurodivergent child, exploring unschooling, or wondering whether homeschooling can truly support special needs, this episode will give you encouragement, perspective, and a whole lot of validation.✨ Connect with Jem: Jem's FacebookJem's InstagramLeave the Big Box Store!
