In this episode Jem is joined by Dhanveer Singh Brar and Ashwani Sharma to discuss their 2019 article ‘What is This 'Black 'in Black Studies? From Black British Cultural Studies to Black Critical Thought in UK Arts and Higher Education'. We actually recorded this in March 2026 We talk about the history of academic and non-academic responses to the experience of racism and radicalisation in Britain since the 1960s, with particular reference to the 1980s Black Arts movement, Cultural Studies in the 1990s, more recent debates over ‘Afro-pessimism', and the revival of militant anti-racism.
We make a couple of references to Ash & Dhan's article about the work of filmmaker Steve McQueen, but we will have them on the podcast again to discuss that. Starting with an investigation into economic ‘shock therapy’ and the way that Trumpism models the concept of ‘shock doctrine’, they move onto modern art’s relationship with the ‘shock of the new’, from Dada and Eisenstein to gangsta rap and radio shock jocks. Can you acclimatise yourself to shock either through repetition or training? Can shock be commodified? What other shocks are coming down the pipeline? These ideas and more with musical input from Kylie, Herbie Hancock and Stravinsky. A deep dive into Joan of Arc — the teenage girl who became one of history's most enduring icons. Jem unpacks the real story behind the legend: the brutal, decades-long war between England and France, how a 16-year-old hearing voices managed to turn the tide of a 75-year losing streak, and why her brief, three-year story has fueled 500 years of movies, operas, pop songs, and pop culture obsession. From Warhammer to Bill & Ted, Joan's fingerprints are everywhere — and this episode asks why.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/condensed-histories. Hosted on Acast. Join hosts J.D. Barker, Christine Daigle, Jena Brown, J.P. Rindfleisch, and Kevin Tumlinson as they discuss the week's entertainment news, including stories about Audible, querying writers, and Dan Brown. Then, stick around for a chat with Evelyn Clarke (V.E. Schwab and Cat Clarke)! V. E .Schwab was born in California, raised in Tennessee, and currently splits her time between Denver, Colorado and Edinburgh, Scotland. She got her undergraduate degree in book design at Washington University in St. Louis, and her masters in depictions of monstrosity in medieval art at the University of Edinburgh. In addition to writing books and hosting a podcast called No Write Way, she spends her time on tour, or plagued by the knowledge of how short life is, in terms of the number of books she'll be able to read, and obsessively saving tiktok videos for recipes she'll probably never make. She also likes to run, and cycle, and swim—though not all at once.  V.E. is the author of more than 25 books, spanning MG, YA, and Adult, though she's never been keen on labeling stories for a certain audience. Plenty of young readers like Vicious, and plenty of older ones like Cassidy Blake, and she believes the best story is the one that finds you when you need it.  Her greatest goal as an author is to make you doubt your reality. Not by convincing you that magic is real, but by planting a seed of doubt that it's not.  Cat Clarke was born in Zambia and brought up in Edinburgh and Yorkshire, which has given her an accent that tends to confuse people. Cat has written non-fiction books about exciting things like cowboys, sharks and pirates, and now writes YA novels. She lives in Edinburgh with a couple of cats, Jem and Scout, who spend their days plotting to spit up furballs at the most inconvenient times. She likes cheese A LOT, especially baked camembert. I only met Jem Doulton a couple of months ago and have had the privilege of watching him play several times with the Au Pairs whilst they've been out on tour supporting the Skids and also doing their own headline shows. Jem's predominantly a percussionist and drummer, but is also partial to the odd bit of crooning now and again. Now, getting together a list of his bands, projects and all that good stuff is where my research gets dodgy, but fuck it here we go with what's probably a partial list:  Thurston Moore, The Au Pairs obviously, Heckle Chamber, Grimm Grimm, The DNA Test, Melos Kalpa, Pando Pando to name but a few - I thought putting out a podcast once a week was pretty prolific, so that'll teach me - as well as recording a bunch of solo records, the latter of which was 2024's hugely imaginative and kaleidoscopic Deal of The Century. I think the collaborators on these releases shows the esteem in which Jem is held as a musician and person. So here's the interesting change in music at least from where I sit – multiple collaborations – if you want to call it that - have become perhaps the default way to be a musician these days - it's way more common to find musicians working on several projects – and often diverse projects. I don't know if this self-development buzzword “multi-hyphenate” - as it applies to doing a few different things in addition to your core job - originated from the music biz but whatever, it feels like this profile is a proper feature of the way that many, many more of us are living now.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently.
