Public health expert Devi Sridhar speaks to Krishnan Guru-Murthy on Ways to Change the World about the launch of her new book 'How not to die (Too Soon). She explains how changing our public health policy could improve life expectancy, what the UK can learn from other countries when it comes to health, and what her own cancer diagnosis taught her about the state of the NHS' waiting list times.

In Episode 148 of the Best Coach Ever podcast, we're getting real about the mistakes that keep coaches stuck when they're trying to scale to $10K, $20K, or even $50K+ months. Scaling isn't just about working harder or slapping together new offers—it's about making the right strategic moves at the right time. And let's be honest, a lot of coaches are making moves that are actually holding them back.We break down four major mistakes that keep businesses stuck: expanding a product suite too soon, constantly launching new offers without strategy, chasing shiny new marketing tactics instead of sticking to what works, and ignoring the real bottlenecks in their business. If you've been throwing spaghetti at the wall, feeling overwhelmed by slow growth, or struggling to convert at higher price points, this episode is packed with insights to help you course-correct and finally scale with confidence. If you're serious about breaking out of your current revenue plateau and scaling in a way that doesn't burn you out, this episode is a must-listen. Get ready for some tough love and strategic shifts that will set your business up for real, sustainable growth. In this episode, we cover:1) The Perfectionism Trap & Blanket Dome Setup [0:00 - 6:30]-Why perfectionism will kill your progress (and why this episode almost didn't happen).-A behind-the-scenes look at recording under a “blanket dome” for better podcast acoustics.2) Mistake #1: Expanding Your Product Suite Too Soon [6:31 - 16:50]-Why adding more offers before you've mastered your core offer leads to more problems, not more money.-The difference between scaling out of overflow vs. desperation.3) Mistake #2: Offering Too Many Things, Too Soon [16:51 - 26:40]-How constantly launching new offers creates confusion for your audience and dilutes your brand.-Why being known for one primary solution first is the fastest path to growth.4) Mistake #3: Shiny Object Syndrome – Jumping from Strategy to Strategy [26:41 - 39:30]-How constantly switching tactics and not giving them time to work is keeping you stuck.-Why most business strategies need at least 30-90 days of consistent effort to see real results.5) Mistake #4: Ignoring the Bottlenecks in Your Business [39:31 - End]-How to identify the “dams” and leaks in your business that are preventing growth.-Why fixing bottlenecks (instead of chasing new strategies) is the key to breaking through income ceilings.Connect with Lynette:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lynettemarieh Fitness Coaching Business Accelerator: https://fcbaprogram.comThe Wellness CEO Mastermind: https://wcmprogram.com
Aaaaaaand we're back. Episode 1 of season 14 of the Dana Gould Hour Podcast. Has anything of interest happened since the last episode? Don't think so. Certainly not here in Los Angeles, or America. Okay. Great. Let's get at it! Drew Friedman is here. Drew Friedman is one of the premiere illustrators and cartoonists in America. You know his work from The New York Observer, the New Yorker, his books, Warts And All, Old Jewish Comedians, More Old Jewish Comedians, Still More Old Jewish Comedians, Too Soon, Drew Friedman's Sideshow Freaks, Heroes Of The Comics, More Heroes Of The Comics, the list goes on and on. In 1987 I discovered his book Any Similarity to Persons Living Or Dead is Purely Coincidental and it quite literally redefined my sense of humor. It is hard to articulate the impact the book had on me. No kidding. Drew has a new book out called Schtick Figures, portraits of people important to Drew. And me. People he refers to as The Cool, The Comical and The Crazy. Portraits of people like Gilbert Gottfried, #2 and #3 as only Drew can draw them. Drew is also the subject of a new documentary that's about to be released entitled The Vermeer Of The Borscht Belt, Drew Friedman is here. Kurt Sayenga is a writer, director and producer. We first met when Kurt ran the series Eli Roth's History Of Horror. Kurt now has a series on Shudder called Horror's Greatest. Season #2 just dropped, with guests like Davi Dastmalchian, Joe Hill, Jonah Ray, Alex Winter, Mick Garris, yours truly and many, many more. Kurt's here to talk about the show and the topics covered this season as it continues to explore our fascination with all things cinematically horrific. Cinematically horrific. If you want to examine the realistically horrific, True Tales From Weirdsville takes a deep dive into the 1957 classic A Face In Crowd, starring Andy Griffith, written by Budd Schulberg and directed by Elia Kazan. It tells the cautionary tale of what happens when a corrupt, amoral grifter gains a position of power and influence in America. It was made in 1957 and it was a FREAKISHLY predictive film. https://www.DanaGould.com
Betty Shamieh was the first Palestinian American playwright to have a play produced off-Broadway. She describes her debut novel, Too Soon, as a "Palestinian American Sex and the City." The novel follows three Palestinian American women across generations as they navigate love and identity. In today's episode, Shamieh speaks with NPR's Pien Huang about using comedy as a way to humanize characters who may be dehumanized in the real world, the 10 year writing process for the book, and how she didn't necessarily want to write it, but she knew she had to.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Send us a textCurtis and Aaron Vaughn came up with the idea for this podcast. The concept for this podcast is to give information and opinions about ten songs each month that may fly under the radar for most listeners of music. Also, we will play a snippet of each song and ask the listener to comment to us through one of our social media outlets so we can get different opinions on what you think about these songs and what they mean to you. The opinions of the music selected are only the opinions of Aaron and Curtis and may not reflect what the artist had in mind. They believe that is the beauty of music. It can mean so many different things to so many different people. In short, Curtis came up with this quote to describe the show: “Sharing the joy of music in hopes of bringing back old memories or helping listeners discover unfamiliar artists, bands, or songs that they might want to look further into. At the same time, helping out Veterans and their families with donations along the way."Songs for this month are:1. Be The One - Collective Soul2. Waiting For Stevie - Pearl Jam3. Wrong Way Round - The Bevis Frond4. East Finchley - Frank Turner5. Summertime - Thunder Queens6. Hole In Your Life - Sister Hazel7. Among Tumbleweeds - Goodnight, Texas8. Nice-ish Ep. 8: Ranking the Worst Househusbands and Shopping Adventures In episode 8 of Nice-ish, hosts Cindy and Grace dive into discussions about various reality TV topics. They start with a personal catch-up and recount Grace's quest for Disney-related T-shirts at their local Target, lamenting how disorganized the store has become. The duo then transitions into an extensive analysis of the worst househusbands across different Real Housewives franchises, explaining how they tabulated results to determine the worst franchise overall based on a specific point system. The episode also covers other reality TV moments, including a recap of 'Married to Medicine' episodes and a discussion about Lindsay Hubbard's pregnancy announcement and its impact on her 'Traitors' casting. Vahn Black is a vocalist based in Atlanta, and in this episode we focused on her project celebrating Gladys Bentley, including Vahn's fantastic album Petrichor. Born and raised in Detroit, Vahn grew up in a melting pot of music and this aided her in cultivating her soul-charged, jazz infused sound, marrying her reverence for vocalists like Sarah Vaughn with her love of producers like J Dilla. We talked about her musical education, her career path, her research into Black history and culture, her joy of collecting vinyl and some of her other creative outlets. It was interesting to hear about her contrasting experiences with work, life and music in Detroit, New York and Atlanta. As a composer Black has lent her artistry to various art mediums from short films to interactive performance art. In 2023 she was selected to perform at NPR's Tiny Desk on the Road Tour stop in Atlanta, and for those listeners who are fans of Vahn Black and those who are discovering her, I hope you'll enjoy this conversation which is punctuated with her music. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AI #62: Too Soon to Tell, published by Zvi on May 3, 2024 on LessWrong. What is the mysterious impressive new 'gpt2-chatbot' from the Arena? Is it GPT-4.5? A refinement of GPT-4? A variation on GPT-2 somehow? A new architecture? Q-star? Someone else's model? Could be anything. It is so weird that this is how someone chose to present that model. There was also a lot of additional talk this week about California's proposed SB 1047. I wrote an additional post extensively breaking that bill down, explaining how it would work in practice, addressing misconceptions about it and suggesting fixes for its biggest problems along with other improvements. For those interested, I recommend reading at least the sections 'What Do I Think The Law Would Actually Do?' and 'What are the Biggest Misconceptions?' As usual, lots of other things happened as well. Table of Contents 1. Introduction. 2. Table of Contents. 3. Language Models Offer Mundane Utility. Do your paperwork for you. Sweet. 4. Language Models Don't Offer Mundane Utility. Because it is not yet good at it. 5. GPT-2 Soon to Tell. What is this mysterious new model? 6. Fun With Image Generation. Certified made by humans. 7. Deepfaketown and Botpocalypse Soon. A located picture is a real picture. 8. They Took Our Jobs. Because we wouldn't let other humans take them first? 9. Get Involved. It's protest time. Against AI that is. 10. In Other AI News. Incremental upgrades, benchmark concerns. 11. Quiet Speculations. Misconceptions cause warnings of AI winter. 12. The Quest for Sane Regulation. Big tech lobbies to avoid regulations, who knew? 13. The Week in Audio. Lots of Sam Altman, plus some others. 14. Rhetorical Innovation. The few people who weren't focused on SB 1047. 15. Open Weights Are Unsafe And Nothing Can Fix This. Tech for this got cheaper. 16. Aligning a Smarter Than Human Intelligence is Difficult. Dot by dot thinking. 17. The Lighter Side. There must be some mistake. Language Models Offer Mundane Utility Write automatic police reports based on body camera footage. It seems it only uses the audio? Not using the video seems to be giving up a lot of information. Even so, law enforcement seems impressed, one notes an 82% reduction in time writing reports, even with proofreading requirements. Axon says it did a double-blind study to compare its AI reports with ones from regular offers. And it says that Draft One results were "equal to or better than" regular police reports. As with self-driving cars, that is not obviously sufficient. Eliminate 2.2 million unnecessary words in the Ohio administrative code, out of a total of 17.4 million. The AI identified candidate language, which humans reviewed. Sounds great, but let's make sure we keep that human in the loop. Diagnose your medical condition? Link has a one-minute video of a doctor asking questions and correctly diagnosing a patient. Ate-a-Pi: This is why AI will replace doctor. Sherjil Ozair: diagnosis any%. Akhil Bagaria: This it the entire premise of the TV show house. The first AI attempt listed only does 'the easy part' of putting all the final information together. Kiaran Ritchie then shows that yes, ChatGPT can figure out what questions to ask, solving the problem with eight requests over two steps, followed by a solution. There are still steps where the AI is getting extra information, but they do not seem like the 'hard steps' to me. Is Sam Altman subtweeting me? Sam Altman: Learning how to say something in 30 seconds that takes most people 5 minutes is a big unlock. (and imo a surprisingly learnable skill. If you struggle with this, consider asking a friend who is good at it to listen to you say something and then rephrase it back to you as concisely as they can a few dozen times. I have seen this work really well!) Interesting DM: "For what it's worth this...

Established in 1907, Dan & Louis Oyster Bar is Portland's oldest family-owned restaurant. Is it really a bar though? Or just a restaurant that serves drinks? We'll leave that for you to decide. But is it a FANTASTIC place to eat, drink, and connect with Old Portland? Abso-shuckin'-lutely. Yes, like Roger Sterling and Don Draper in Mad Men's Season 1 classic "Red in the Face" oyster lunch scene, the HBTG boys were busting after a midday bacchanal of invertebrates, martinis, and cheesecake. Thankfully for all involved there were no flights of stairs to be climbed en route to the recording studio afterward and the only expulsion was the pure joy of experiencing a Portland classic for the first time. PLUS, reflections on our visit to one of the newest bars in the city -- Too Soon -- in our April Fool's episode! Join us dear friends for another succinct and well produced episode of History by the Glass -- Portland most popular podcast tour of the city's freshest, hottest, and relatively historic bars, pubs, and saloons…whiskey libraries, modern speakeasies, craft brew pubs, and mixology dens. In this rare commercial-free episode, we asked how soon is Too Soon when we visited Northeast's 8-week-old Too Soon cocktail lounge -- the oldest bar in Portland serving complimentary warm cookies at last call. Hello to you listening in Kampala, Uganda!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. You might notice that I'll be dipping into the podcast archives to give you something to listen to this week. Why? Because on Friday the 1st of December I had to keep a promise to Gus the Good. Gus was the last of my 4 kitties, 3 of whom came with me to Whidbey Island and have gone on ahead over the Rainbow Bridge.Gus was a senior fellow. Been with me some 17 years or so since I brought him home from the no-kill pet shelter along with his sister, Kayak. Someone had dumped the litter in a bin outside a convenience store. He's weathered many changes: losing his mates, moving from household to household, now age and kidney disease. The thing about Gus is that he took it all in stride. He asked for what he wanted when he wanted it. He snoozed in the sun of an afternoon. The morning was not complete until he got his brushing. I can tell you I've curried horses in less time! He figured out how to claim his spot on the bed and the pillow so I had to adjust to him. No matter my mood or attitude he was ready to hand out his personal brand of affection: face licking.I think the most common thought shared by all of us who have had to make the decision when to let our animal companions go to their final sleep is: I did it too soon or I did it too late. I hear you. My promise to Gus was that I'd walk him to the Rainbow Bridge a little early so that he would not have to suffer. Did I make the right choice? Here's what our compassionate Whidbey Island house calls vet said: “Better to go on a good day than a bad day.” It was a good day for keeping promises. So I hope you understand if right now I don't have what it takes to create a week's worth of new episodes.Question: What have your animal companions taught you about life, love and loss? You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out What I Offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Start-up Session,✓ Opt In to my monthly NewsAudioLetter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Co-writer and director Roberto Rossellini took these tales of survival and wove them into a gripping drama about the Italian resistance. Filmed using non-professional actors and real Roman locations, the movie has a gritty, documentary feel. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we conclude our series on the nominees of the 1947 Academy Awards for ‘Best Writing, Screenplay' with Rossellini's iconic 1945 film Rome, Open City. Reel Talk on Real LifeWe unpack this landmark of Italian neorealism that was filmed on the war-torn streets of Rome just months after the Nazi occupation ended. The filmmakers wanted to capture the rawness of life during wartime. Iconic scenes like Pina's death as she runs after the Nazi truck became cinematic landmarks. The movie birthed a whole movement in Italian neorealism.Women Navigating Impossible ChoicesPina, played unforgettably by Anna Magnani, is the fiancée of resistance fighter Francesco. Her violent death scene is one of the film's most wrenching moments. Dancer Marina gets caught up spying for the Nazis in exchange for drugs and fur coats. We see how she becomes compromised and is discarded when no longer useful. German officer Ingrid manipulates Marina through addiction. She represents the female face of Nazi villainy and moral corruption.War's Impact on the Next GenerationThe tragedy of the film is how war devastates the lives of children like Pina's son and the street boys who witness Pietro's death. Yet the image of these boys resolutely marching back into the city provides a hopeful note that the youth may lead Italy to a better future.Enduring Classic Is BornRome, Open City packs an emotional punch that holds up decades later. It's essential viewing for anyone interested in Italian cinema or World War II stories. This landmark film demonstrates how constraints can breed art and truth. So check it out then tune in! Tony welcomes his daughter Mackie Overbay, a licensed cosmetologist and new podcast host, to the Virtual Couch. They delve into the multifaceted parenting journey as children transition into new stages of life. They unpack the generational disconnect, emphasize the ever-changing relationship between technology and mental health, and stress the importance of understanding, adaptability, and open communication. An eye-opening discussion explores discomfort's role in self-confrontation, highlighting that with the right tools, every interaction can be an opportunity to self-confront and grow rather than driving a disconnect in relationships. The conversation expands beyond conventional wisdom, offering fresh perspectives on building resilient parent-child relationships. Tony and Mackie explore how accepting emotional experiences, even when dysregulated, fosters safety and connection. They also advocate for consistency, mindfulness, and small daily actions to promote emotional well-being. Their engaging dialogue offers invaluable insights and practical advice for parents and individuals interested in strengthening their relationships and embracing personal growth, providing a roadmap for navigating the complex terrain of contemporary family life. In this candid episode of 'The Virtual Couch,' host Tony Overbay, LMFT, is joined by his colleague, Nate Christensen, APCC. Together, they dissect the trend highlighted in a recent article titled "U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs" https://news.gallup.com/poll/505745/depression-rates-reach-new-highs.aspx while discussing their theories and experiences dealing with mental health in their therapy practices. Tony starts by explaining his theory that the brain, constantly analyzing for threats, signals us through anxiety and depression that it's time to address negative aspects of our lives. Both Tony and Nate emphasize that these signals, as tough as they are, are not enemies but signs that push us toward positive changes. The discussion then navigates through various types of depression, the prevalent causes, and contributing factors, shedding light on the increased depression rates despite an uptick in societal mental health awareness. Nate shares his experience of dealing with depression and anxiety, leading to an in-depth discussion about different therapy approaches, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Finally, they explore the benefits of medication and newer therapy forms, like psychedelic-assisted therapy. All throughout, the underlying message is clear: If you're struggling, seek help. You're not broken, you're human, and this journey is discovery and transformation.
