Our next guests on air are friends of the show Georgie Purcell and Josh Burns. Georgie has recently been in the press for  helping the hamlet of Elphinstone end plans to start a puppy farm in the area. An application for a proposed dog breeding facility in Elphinstone in Central Victoria has been withdrawn following lobbying from residents and animal activists. The puppy farm had planned to operate 24 hours a day and house up to 150 dogs including corgis, golden retrievers and Cavalier King Charles spaniels. The application for the facility, lodged with Mount Alexander Shire Council in April, stated it “mandates scheduled caesarean sections at specialised veterinary clinics”. Animal Justice MP and Member for Northern Victoria Georgie Purcell said it would have been an “extraordinary” first. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-04/breeder-withdraws-plan-for-controversial-puppy-farm/106753744 Youth Housing Josh was on air today to discuss the Federal Government’s Youth Housing crisis campaign. This budget will deliver nearly $60 million over four years to directly address the youth housing penalty, providing thousands of young Australians access secure housing, helping to reduce youth homelessness. The Federal Government will invest $59.4 million over four years from 2026-27 for community housing providers (CHPs) to help house young people at risk of housing insecurity and homelessness. The new Youth Housing Supplement will provide funding to community housing providers (CHPs) that house eligible young people receiving Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY. Funding will help offset the lower rental income associated with housing young people on lower-rate income support payments, making it easier for providers to offer homes to vulnerable young Australians. The measure is expected to support: 2,325 young people from 1 January 2027 2,500 young people in 2027-28 4,000 young people in 2028-29 4,355 young people in 2029-30 Funding profile ($m) 2026-27 2027-28 2028-29 2029-30 Total 6.0 12.0 19.2 22.3 59.4   Why does this matter? Young people are now among the groups most at risk of homelessness in Australia, with 19 to 24-year-olds experiencing the highest homelessness rate of any age cohort. At the same time, many young people face a structural barrier accessing community housing. Most community housing providers charge income-based rents, typically around 25 per cent of a tenant's income plus Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA. Because Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY are significantly lower than payments such as JobSeeker, the Disability Support Pension and the Age Pension, providers receive substantially less rental income from housing young people. In some cases, providers receive up to 54 per cent less rental revenue from a young tenant compared with an older tenant on the Age Pension or Disability Support Pension. Sector organisations have argued this creates a “youth housing penalty” where young people can unintentionally become harder to house within the current funding model, despite often having high levels of vulnerability and support needs. Young people are now among the groups most at risk of homelessness in Australia: Nearly 40 per cent of people presenting alone to homelessness services are under 25. Thousands of young people are turned away from homelessness services each year because support is full. Many cycle between couch surfing, crisis accommodation, unsafe housing and rough sleeping. Housing and homelessness organisations have argued for years that the current system creates a structural disincentive to house young people. The Youth Housing Supplement directly responds to this issue by helping providers absorb the revenue gap and create more pathways into stable housing. The Home Time campaign, the measure responds to extensive advocacy from the Home Time campaign, a national alliance supported by more than 170 housing, homelessness and social welfare organisations across Australia. Home Time has campaigned for reforms that recognise the unique drivers of youth homelessness and create long-term housing pathways for young people, rather than relying solely on crisis accommodation and emergency responses. The proposal also responds to recommendations from the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee, which identified a youth housing supplement as a targeted way to reduce youth homelessness. Atlas spent a decade moving in and out of homelessness as a young person. During that time, he saw many other young people fall through the cracks, including peers who lost their lives while homeless. He says stable housing can fundamentally change the trajectory of a young person's life. “This Youth Housing Supplement is an incredible investment from the federal government into on the ground action that will make it easier for young people to get out of homelessness and find safety.” “I was in and out of homelessness for 10 years, and in those years, I saw too many people lose their lives. Kids who died on the streets, kids who never truly had a chance to find anything else. Investments like this one will save lives.” Atlas says the measure gives hope to young people who have become accustomed to falling through the cracks. “I can't fully articulate what this supplement means for the young people who are currently experiencing homelessness.” “This subsidy is just the first step of many in the changes we need to make to create a truly equitable system but for the first time in a long time there is hope.” “Helping more people into homes is a big focus of this Budget.” “Right now, it's too hard for too many Australians to get into their own home and get ahead and that's why we're building more homes, fast-tracking approvals, and helping thousands of young people to pay the rent.” Treasurer Jim Chalmers “When a young person has a safe place to live, everything else becomes more possible – education, health, and stable employment.” “This investment is about unlocking safe and secure housing for vulnerable young Australians so they have the solid foundation they need to build strong, secure and independent lives.” Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek “The fact that young Australians are now among the groups most at risk of homelessness should stop us in our tracks, and that's why this government is acting.” “Getting a roof over your head can change the course of a young person's life, bringing stability, safety and the chance to build a future.” =Minister for Housing Clare O'Neil The post Sat, 6th June, 2026: Georgie Purcell, Animal Justice Party: Puppy Farms & Josh Burns, ALP, Macnamara; Youth Homelessness Campaign. appeared first on Saturday Magazine.

Felling of Mt Macedon snow gums leaves conservationists aghast This week Earth Matters travels to a mountain peak in Central Victoria where the State government has destroyed almost a hectare of fragile snow gums. Nature lovers and conservation advocates are devastated and confused. The snow gums were part of a montane woodland that had regenerated over the course of forty-years since the catastrophic Ash Wednesday fires razed the area in 1983. They are located on Wurundjeri Country in the autumnal wonderland of Mount Macedon, an hour outside Melbourne. The snow gums are treasured not only for their high ecological value but because they are one of only three remaining snow gum communities in Western and Central Victoria.  They were removed to make way for a controversial view from the Mt Macedon Memorial Cross despite the local Council having rejected the proposal three years earlier. We talk to the campaigners who were at the mountain in the leadup to the felling to understand more. Speakers: Ben Gill, Victorian National Parks Association Anna Langford, Friends of the Earth Melbourne  Kate Lawrence, Macedon and Mt Macedon Landcare Cam Walker, Friends of the Earth Melbourne  Additional audio production: Tessa Campisi Vigil audio: Kate Lawrence Photo: Friends of the Earth  Campaigns and references  https://themountainjournal.com/2025/08/21/protect-macedons-rare-snow-gum https://vnpa.org.au/save-the-snow-gums/ https://www.melbournefoe.org.au/save_mt_macedon_snow_gums https://www.melbournefoe.org.au/snow_gum_summit_declaration_2026 https://us13.campaign-archive.com/?u=5e12186049bebef650f31b237&id=dc9eff2531 https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/-/media/project/pv/main/parks/documents/management-plans/macedon-regional-park-strategic-management-statement-2009.pdf?rev=1c84346e8d87416ea889b94c445ce07f https://www.trustadvocate.org.au/heritage-misused-to-justify-tree-removal-at-mount-macedon-cross/

Talk Birdie To Me

Today, Mark is in studio at Titleist and FootJoy HQ, Nick is at Cathedral in Central Victoria. We start the show with Nick mentioning that his wife Alana has just had her best round ever. He is very proud! We talk about the RBC Heritage Tournament on Hilton Head. Nick says that Harbourtown, which he played many times, was his favourite course on the PGA Tour and explains why. He also says that it has one of the worst driving ranges on tour. Mark loves the trees, and goes into a tirade about golf course designers, golf course committees, and anyone in general who cuts down beautiful trees and replaces them with inappropriate ones on golf courses. We discuss JT's win, and his comments about asking for Xander Schauffele's help with his putting (here). Leads to a chat about 'home base'. Nick explains what his home base was, Mark talks to his, and we discuss Scottie Schefflers. Nick explains how Cam Smith's mirror works for him.A voicemail: a wolfpacker heard Nick's Top 5 'unwatchable' players a couple of weeks back, and feels that he missed an obvious one. Mark follows Stats Guru Lou Stagner on Twitter (here) and lists some stats that Lou posted on Rory's Masters performance. Staggering. During the Turn Nick casually drops a massive statement about Tommy Fleetwood, Mark disagrees. We discuss. But there is one thing about Tommy Fleetwood that Nick and Mark agree on which Mark says needs to 'stop immediately'.A Top 5 (or is it 6?) from Nick, suggested by Wolfpack member Skyla. Top 5 Mulligans. Nick loves it and lists his. Mark tells a story about Tour Pro Scott Hoch at a dinner in Auckland where things took a bad turn when Scott criticised the calamari.Feedback. Two main themes: Marks comments that Rory made the greatest shot ever on 15 at The Masters, which we'll come back to and do a bonus pod on. And the '4 sackable offences' chat. Feedback was split, most very passionate. We read out some of each. And Mark wants to hear from anyone who was at The Masters, about what it was like being there.More drama with PING Global results. And today's show isn't from the Australian Golf Centre, home of the PGA of Australia and Golf Australia, Nick is live from Central Victoria not far from Cathedral, and Mark is overlooking the beautiful 4th hole at Box Hill Golf Course in Melbourne. We start by looking at the Erik Van Rooyen's incredible win in the World Wide Technology Championship. A great performance with so many brilliant stories coming out of it, not only from Erik. Nick and Mark discuss how a number of Australian golfers from the current Order of Merit will be able to go to Round 1 of LIV qualifying, and how the PGA tour might respond to the players who do go to qualifying. Mark's view is that the PGA will not be impressed if any Australian player goes to LIV qualifying, and asks Nick for his opinion. Leads to a chat about what World Rankings mean, Nick believes that rankings may become less relevant over time.Mark mentions his view that LIV and PGA talks are not progressing. Nick describes it as an ongoing saga.Mark is over the moon that Robert MacIntyre is coming to the Australia Open, but less impressed about Michael Block and doesn't want him in with the big boys. Nick and Mark discuss some of the players coming out for the Open, the field of women and men is extraordinary.But....onto the big news story of the week. The Box Hill Pro-Am. Salem's Lot (1979)   Salem's Lot (also known as Salem's Lot: The Movie, Salem's Lot: The Miniseries and Blood Thirst) is a 1979 American miniseries television adaptation of the 1975 horror novel of the same name by Stephen King. Directed by Tobe Hooper and starring David Soul and James Mason, the plot concerns a writer who returns to his hometown and discovers that its citizens are turning into vampires. Salem's Lot combines elements of the vampire film and haunted house subgenres of horror. Salem's Lot (2004) Salem's Lot is a 2004 American two-part television miniseries which first aired on TNT on June 20 and ended its run on June 21, 2004. Have you ever been told that you are “too much” or "intimidating"?ORHave you ever looked at another woman or femme person and thought “She's so…”, “Ugh, I can't believe she…”, or “I hate when they…”?It's taught to us from a very early age. We see it in movies, cartoons, magazines, books, even songs; women competing against other women. Women fighting for love interests, jobs, social status, women comparing their motherhood skills, their home decor, their talents and their body shapes. Women comparing themselves against each other, pulling each other down, or putting themselves in the shadow of another. We get taught to slut shame, body shame, success shame, class shame and so much more.A few days before recording this podcast I was having a chat on Instagram with a dear friend of mine, Serra. I admitted to her that I had struggled during our 9 year friendship with competition and comparison. I had found myself swinging from having a mega crush on this babe to comparing myself to her, and even internally shaming her for her juicy, vibrant, personality. We got into a vulnerable chat via private messages and, on her suggestion, decided to pause it and record the conversation for all of you to enjoy. In this episode we look hard at ourselves, at our own habits and how we not only treat other women but how other women treat us. We pull apart the toxic ways we have been taught to interact by society, but also delve into the vulnerability of grappling with all that shame ourselves. As two women who have both been told we are “too much” and “Intimidating” we also reflect on how to bridge that gap and find our place with other strong women in our life.If you love this podcast please consider supporting it by joining me on Patreon: www.Patreon.com/FleassyThis show features an interview with Serra Stone."Serra is an everchanging practise of pulsing, writhing lifeforms, held together by lichen and dawn. Currently taking form as a queer, neuro-diverse, sex worker, eco-sensual, writer, wildlife carer and artist; Serra considers her most important work is done in ritual with animals who have been killed. Her written and visual musings are the awkward, painful, decomposing truths of our world with a touch of satirical armour to soften the treacherous path. She is a (proper) bird nerd, earl grey loving, many book at a time reading mother of one caramel eyed Pitbull currently breathing with Dja Dja Wurrung Country in Central Victoria, Australia."https://www.instagram.com/serra.stone/https://www.facebook.com/sarah.hancock.756/https://medium.com/@connect_92174---------------------------------------------------------This podcast was recorded in Naam, on the lands of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.Fierce-gentle was made possible and supported by a Banyule City Council Business Grant.Written, recorded and hosted by Fleassy Malay:https://linktr.ee/fleassymalayReclaim your Voice, Courage, and Power in Fleassy's online course, RISE - Speaker Training.https://coursecraft.net/courses/z9VdE/Music by Rory McDougall:https://soundcloud.com/myshyteSupport the show
