Description:Some stories feel less like books and more like quiet companions. Theo of Golden is one of those. This month in the Jen Hatmaker Book Club, Jen sits down with author Allen Levi to talk about the small-town novel that has quietly captured the hearts of readers around the world. Set in the fictional town of Golden, Georgia, the story introduces us to Theo — a mysterious newcomer whose little shop becomes an unlikely gathering place for the people around him. As neighbors wander in carrying grief, questions, regrets, and ordinary Tuesdays, something remarkable begins to happen: lives shift, wounds soften, and the quiet work of grace unfolds in the most unexpected ways. But Allen's path to writing Theo of Golden is a story of its own. Before this book found its way into readers' hands, Allen spent decades living another life — as a litigator and as a musician and songwriter, telling stories in courtrooms and through songs long before he ever sat down to write a novel. In this conversation, Jen and Allen talk about how those two worlds — law and music — shaped the storyteller he would eventually become, and how the long arc of a creative life sometimes leads us somewhere we never expected. Together, Jen and Allen talk about the beauty of slow stories, the sacredness hiding in ordinary places, and why the most transformative moments in life rarely arrive with fanfare. They explore the characters of Golden, the themes of redemption and belonging woven through the book, and the deeper invitation at the heart of Theo's story — to pay attention to the people and moments right in front of us. If you've ever believed that kindness still matters, that communities can heal one conversation at a time, or that ordinary lives are full of extraordinary grace, this conversation will feel like coming home. Grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and join Jen and Allen Levi for a conversation about stories, second acts, and the quiet magic that happens when people really see one another. Thought-provoking Quotes: “All through the writing of the book, I cried and cried and I'm not an easy crier, but I fell in love with these characters. They still kind of inhabit the space around me. But it told me that there was something bigger going on than just the story. Maybe the better angels of our nature are waking up and bringing something to the surface that maybe is good for us. I hope so.” – Allen Levi “I have heard, if you want to write, you just sit down with a pen and you start writing and the story will bubble up. And so I did that and the story never bubbled up. It just frustrated me and frustrated me. That's why I quit so many times, but eventually it started coming together almost like writing a song.” – Allen Levi “Everything that I've done professionally has required me to use words to tell stories, usually to persuade people. As a lawyer, I did that. As a singer songwriter, I did that. And now as a novelist.”– Allen Levi Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Theo of Golden: A Novel by Allen Levi - https://amzn.to/47J6V9p Allen Levi's Music - https://open.spotify.com/artist/2UaP04apWp23PxnhKQHJgx?si=3tzeCi3HROqRampni92Dew Jen Hatmaker Book Club - https://shop.jenhatmaker.com/collections/book-club Alan Bradley - https://alanbradleyauthor.com/ The Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley - https://amzn.to/412lNMm Guest's Links: Website - https://www.allenlevi.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/allenlevi/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/allen.levi.31/ Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQa2G5Ym0pyNnnK0nocxZ3Q Substack - https://substack.com/@allenclevi Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.
Francesca Flavia Mormanni Joins the Show — Music, Writing, Finance, and the Creative LifeFF. Mormanni joins The Rational Egoist for a wide-ranging conversation that cuts across art, intellect, and independence. Known professionally as F. F. Mormanni (also Francesca Mormanni), Francesca is a novelist, screenwriter, musician, producer, and actress whose work reflects a serious engagement with creativity as a rational, chosen pursuit—not a mystic impulse or a social performance. In this episode, Michael and Francesca explore what it means to live as a creator in multiple disciplines, how writing and music shape one's inner world, and why financial independence matters to anyone who wants to think and produce freely. The discussion moves fluidly between the practical realities of making art, the discipline required to sustain it, and the personal responsibility involved in building a life that supports long-term creative work. This is not a romanticised view of art.

Flavia Saldanha, a consulting data engineer, joins host Kanchan Shringi to discuss the evolution of data engineering from ETL (extract, transform, load) and data lakes to modern lakehouse architectures enriched with vector databases and embeddings. Flavia explains the industry's shift from treating data as a service to treating it as a product, emphasizing ownership, trust, and business context as critical for AI-readiness. She describes how unified pipelines now serve both business intelligence and AI use cases, combining structured and unstructured data while ensuring semantic enrichment and a single source of truth. She outlines key components of a modern data stack, including data marketplaces, observability tools, data quality checks, orchestration, and embedded governance with lineage tracking. This episode highlights strategies for abstracting tooling, future-proofing architectures, enforcing data privacy, and controlling AI-serving layers to prevent hallucinations. Saldanha concludes that data engineers must move beyond pure ETL thinking, embrace product and NLP skills, and work closely with MLOps, using AI as a co-pilot rather than a replacement. When 30% of young adults already earn from side hustles with instant payouts, the traditional two-week pay cycle feels increasingly outdated. This disconnect creates a massive opportunity for contractors willing to embrace new compensation models. The magic of instant pay lies in its psychological impact. Research shows that merely having access to immediate payment options creates an effect equivalent to a 19% wage increase—without actually increasing base compensation. By connecting desired behaviors (weekend shifts, emergency calls, successful sales) with instant financial rewards, contractors can drive productivity while giving employees greater financial control."The marshmallow test shows us that people value choice in when they receive rewards," Flavia explains. "Instant pay is like saying: you accomplished something valuable, here's your reward, use it whenever you want." This approach transforms how technicians view challenging shifts from obligations to opportunities.Perhaps most compelling is how instant pay revolutionizes recruitment. By attaching immediate bonuses to referral milestones—when candidates apply, interview, get hired, and reach retention anniversaries—contractors effectively turn their entire team into an engaged recruiting force. This creates a powerful cycle where team members actively help maintain the quality culture they value. For contractors facing labor shortages and increasing wage demands, Field Pay offers a strategic approach to compensation that aligns business objectives with employee motivation. Those who adapt faster with smarter pay systems will gain significant advantages in building capacity, delivering exceptional customer experiences, and fostering stronger company cultures.Ready to transform how you motivate your team? But when Timon learns Alcibiades is planning to take over Athens, he gives him gold to support the campaign. Alcibiades is followed by the Poet and Painter, who Timon turns away with another barrage of insults. When thieves come to rob him, Timon cheers them on, baffling their efforts and sending them to the city to sow chaos in the streets. The Senators are the last to arrive. Flavia heads them off in an effort to win Timon over to their side before they meet. Last fall, I met Francesco Galgani and tried his wines and I was completely blown away. I always think of Vernaccia as a more historical Pinot Grigio -- light on flavor, boring, and not anything to get excited about. But then I visited Cappella Sant'Andrea. HOLY CRAP!! This is the BEST Vernaccia on earth. Francesco and Flavia, the owners and winemakers, are truly the Masters of Vernaccia di San Gimignano. You will never taste Vernaccia like this. In the show Francesco and I discuss the long history of Vernaccia, wine in San Gimignano, why there is so much crappy Vernaccia, and how they do it right. Their Rialto and Prima Luce, especially are stunning. I can't sing their praises more. Two things mentioned in the show: Follow Francesco on IG, he's a brilliant artist: @francescogalgani If you want to order directly from Francesco, and have the wine shipped from Italy, please visit their website: https://www.cappellasantandrea.it/chi-siamo1 and you can contact them for orders and pricing!
