Thousands of women gave up everything to follow Mother Teresa, joining her storied Catholic order, the Missionaries of Charity. But some found that life inside this fiercely private religious order was not what they’d imagined. Former sisters who worked closely with Mother Teresa describe her bold vision and devotion to charity and prayer. But they also share stories of suffering and forbidden love, abuse and betrayal. If you make a lifelong vow, what does it mean to break it? What is the line between devotion and brainwashing? Can you truly give yourself to God?
The Turning: The Sisters Who Left podcast is an incredibly eye-opening and thought-provoking series that delves into the experiences of women who left Mother Teresa's order, the Missionaries of Charity. As someone who volunteered at Mother Teresa's orphanage and place for the dying, I was shocked by the angry and dehumanizing treatment the sisters exhibited towards the children and patients. This podcast provided an explanation for what I witnessed and helped me understand that there were deeper issues at play.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is its excellent reporting. The storytelling is respectful yet completely honest, allowing the former sisters to share their stories in a way that is both informative and emotionally compelling. The podcast does a great job of exploring the complexities of Mother Teresa's legacy, showcasing her immense good works while also shedding light on the flaws and failures within her organization. It takes a balanced approach, providing valuable insights without resorting to blind criticism or adoration.
However, one downside of this podcast is its advertisements. Many listeners found them to be off-putting and out-of-place given the serious nature of the content. The ads were loud, obnoxious, and often unrelated to the podcast's theme, which created a jarring contrast that detracted from the overall experience. Additionally, some editing issues such as repeated long pauses were mentioned by listeners.
In conclusion, despite its minor flaws in terms of advertisements and editing issues, The Turning: The Sisters Who Left is a must-listen podcast that offers a fascinating look into a complicated group led by an iconic figure like Mother Teresa. It provides a platform for former sisters to share their experiences while highlighting both the immense good and troubling aspects within Mother Teresa's order. The production quality is outstanding, making it engaging and informative for anyone interested in religion, Catholicism, psychology, sociology, or cults.

But as he tries to put his world back together, he realizes the incredible ways astrology presents itself in modern society: from NASA employees who keep their belief in astrology in the closet, to world leaders who've used astrologers to guide foreign policy, to moneyball statisticians who use astrology more than statistics to build baseball teams, to a little shop in India where your fortune was written for you centuries ago, and is waiting for you to come claim it. Over the course of 8 episodes, Mangesh tries to decipher why we keep looking to the stars for answers, and what happens when you don't believe in astrology, but astrology keeps happening to you.
