Adult ballet dancer and board member for the Children's Dance Theater of Okanogan County in Washington, Rob MacCaul, is in the studio this month! Rob's story about discovering ballet is a testament to passion, perseverance, and self-discovery. It began in 1982 with a chance encounter at a dance studio in Waikiki—an experience that sparked a lifelong love for ballet. From taking classes in Pasadena to performing on stage as an adult in Seattle, Rob spoke about how ballet helped him discover and express his identity and taught him that he can still challenge himself in adulthood, whether it's through performing on stage as an adult or taking the step of going en pointe at age 58. His story goes beyond ballet as well. It's about finding the courage to express himself authentically, navigating societal expectations, and building a community that embraces everyone in dance. “Companies oftentimes see dancers, especially women, "unable" to have a career, a professional career after they're becoming mothers. And that's also part of the patriarchy because this is not how it works. Having a child and coming back to work, it can potentialize your work in so many ways. It can bring a broader vision for yourself and for others around you. It can change everything.” - Ingrid SilvaIngrid Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she began classical ballet training at age eight in the Dançando Para Não Dançar, a program that provided training to young people who could not otherwise afford dance classes.Throughout her childhood, Silva was inspired by Brazilian ballet dancers, Mercedes Baptista and Ana Botafogo. Outside of Baptista, however, she had very few black Brazilian ballet dancers to idolize. Silva's passion for increased Afro Brazilian visibility in ballet, combined with her mother's unwavering support, inspired Silva to be her own role model at a young age.By the young age of 17, Silva was an apprentice at Grupo Corpo, one of the most prestigious dance companies in Brazil. And in 2017, she was accepted into the Dance Theater of Harlem Summer Intensive Program in New York on a full scholarship. The following year, she joined the company's community engagement project, Dancing Through Barriers. In 2013, Silva joined the company full time, where she remains today. She felt affirmed by the Dance Theater of Harlem's celebration of African American culture through performance, community engagement, and arts education programs. Silva has held principal and soloist roles for renowned choreographers, including Arthur Mitchell, Donald Bird, Francesca Harper, and many others.Speaking with Silva at her home in New York, it was a delight to be able to hear her own perspective on this incredible personal journey and how it has intersected with pregnancy and motherhood. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above.Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Alanna Morris is a professional dancer-choreographer in St. Paul. She saw Minnesota Dance Theatre's spring production, and she wants everyone to know about the Ensemble's final weekend. Shows are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis. Alanna says: Minnesota Dance Theatre are a legacy intuition. Going back to its founder, Loyce Houlton, who in 1962 made innovative contributions to the performance of classical ballet and the Graham technique, which still sets the company's dancers apart today, not only locally but nationally. The company has undergone a lot of administrative changes in recent years, and yet the love of dance and performance is still so strong. They are presenting three world premieres. They are actually closing their doors and celebrating this legacy this weekend. They've had such a rich history of performance for decades, then carried through by Houlton's daughter, Lise, and now directed by Elayna Waxse, who is the interim artistic director. They are actually closing their doors and celebrating this legacy this weekend. This is the performing ensemble's farewell concert and celebration concert. Minnesota Dance Theatre's school will remain open and continue to thrive with training young students and young dancers. This performance features four choreographers. Three of them are local to the Minnesota dance community, and one of them (Nia-Amina Minor) is an artist that's been commissioned; she's a Black and female choreographer from Seattle. And you're going to see a range of works in the classical ballet idiom, also traversing into contemporary ballet. You're gonna hear classics like Frederick Chopin to contemporary and experimental jazz music from Makaya McCraven. I went to the performance and I was amazed by the diversity of the musical selections there. It's really worth seeing.Over these long years, some of our most amazing dancers and teachers and arts leaders have come out of the Minnesota Dance school and company here. The Ensemble is taking their last bow this weekend, but the school will continue to thrive and train young students and young dancers.— Alanna MorrisRasputin: There lived a certain man, in Russia long agoTheater maker Shanan Custer of White Bear Lake saw Four Humors Theater's play “Rasputin” at the Twin Cities Horror Festival last fall, and she's thrilled that the show is getting a second run at Open Eye Figure Theatre in Minneapolis. “Rasputin” opens tonight and runs through May 18. The show runs 70 minutes without intermission. The May 12 matinee requires masks for all audience members. (All other shows are mask-optional.) Shanan says: The play is a dark comedy created by Four Humors Theater. It's a very deeply hilarious investigation of all of the versions of Rasputin's gruesome death. It's brilliantly conceived, the actors are so strong and there are so many incredible physical comedy moments. A very deeply hilarious investigation. And yet while that's happening, the play is dealing with this political nightmare: this greedy, horrifying zealot who's getting all the attention. It plays really well in 2024. It hit me so hard last year, and I'm really excited that they're bringing it back.— Shanan CusterCheck out Mankato's arts scene Dana Sikkila, director of the 410 Project Community Art Space in Mankato, is looking forward to the second annual Manifest event this Saturday. The free, all-day event (11 a.m. to 10 p.m.) celebrates the local arts scene and its vibrant history. Put on by the Midwest Arts Catalyst and River Valley Makers, Manifest is a new, larger iteration of its (pre-COVID) Post-Holiday Extravaganza. Location: Kato Ballroom. Dana says: It's our time in Mankato here — and really truly for anyone who wants to join us — to celebrate arts and culture. It also celebrates the history of the arts in the Mankato area, to reflect on the importance of keeping these things alive in our cities. It's going to be an all-day event. There are art vendors. There's going to be art raffles, a silent auction and food trucks. We have a huge community mural project that's going to be happening on a building outside next door to the Kato Ballroom. We're going to have our Mankato community collage photo shoot happening 11 to 5 p.m., too. And that's where people can come to get a photo taken of themselves with their friends with their families. And that photo gets put into our big community collage that happens yearly. And then starting at 7 p.m., we're having live music. It is free to attend and everyone's welcome. They are asking for a $20 suggested donation at the door. Any of the proceeds that come in at the door go back into the arts in our community throughout the year. It's a great event all the way around.— Dana Sikkila

Nicole Clarke-Springer isn't losing sleep over the final product; as a dancer and choreographer, she's more interested in the process. She says the communal nature of her work is what makes the performance authentic and affects the audience. Nicole shares with Jeanne why she threw out her plan to move to New York City for training; what the three points of collaboration are when she's choreographing and why they matter; how embracing the process contributes to her success; why listening to your intuition is important; and why she doesn't tell herself she will do better.Nicole Clarke-Springer, with a B.S. in arts administration-dance from Butler University, excelled early, honored as Butler Ballet's Outstanding Performer. Her career blossomed at Deeply Rooted Dance Theater (DRDT), starting as an apprentice before becoming a company member. Clarke-Springer's notable performances include working with Roberta Flack and Jennifer Holiday. She took a brief hiatus in 2007 to teach at Western Kentucky University and tour Istanbul with the Clifton Brown Dance Company. Returning to DRDT, she directed the Summer Dance Intensive, honed her choreographic skills with works like Nine and Femme, and contributed to Congo Square Theatre's Nativity. In 2013, she joined DRDT's Artistic Team and was spotlighted as an Emerging Choreographer for "Generations." Her piece Hadiya was acclaimed for its poignancy and tribute to victims of violence. Clarke-Springer's influence extended to choreographing for the Steve Harvey Show and teaching nationwide, including positions at Chicago State University and Northwestern University. Upholding Deeply Rooted's mission, she fosters an environment of spiritual affirmation, open dialogue, and accountability, leading to her appointment as Artistic Director in 2019.Website: deeplyrooteddancetheater.org instagram: @nikkispringer5facebook: Nicole Clarke-Springer

“Dancing just created a space for me where I could do what I want and feel what.”Our conversation with Devika explores the profound influence dance has had in her life. From dancing to connect to herself, to dancing to lead others and create intimate spaces of trust. From dancing to shape and express parts of her identity to dancing to heal and fulfil––she takes us through the entire experience. The episode begins by delving deeper into the start of her journey with dance. She shares with us what initially drew her to the Horton technique and outlines her journey to now becoming a certified Horton instructor and teaching classes at The Ailey School, The Ailey Extension and at the Dance Theater of Harlem and WRArts. She then describes the feeling of connection, openness and accomplishment she's experienced throughout her life because of dance. A teacher who taught her what it means to lead. An NGO that taught her how to create intimate spaces of trust and moments of partnership. Her double major in data science which was easier to get through because of the rigorous focus she's had to put on her mind and body. She then very courageously shares the idea of freedom and release through dance and its impact on identity and expression of love. She shares her coming out to her family and sheds a light on how that journey has been. We end by touching upon the work she does in dance therapy and immersive theater and how she hopes to do more of both. And we part with the thought that just like you can't choreograph every movement in dance, you can't choreograph every moment in life and at times the beauty in both life and dance is about the unfold. Hello, everyone! Welcome to another episode of 5 Minutes Chinese! In today's episode I want to share how I celebrated my birthday with a wonderful performance by the Beijing Dance Theater based on the Oscar Wilde fairy tale "The Nightingale and the Rose." Thank you for tuning in. Find the script and useful expression below. Have a great week! The Nightingale and the Rose。 演出 (yǎnchū) - Performance庆祝 (qìngzhù) - Celebrate巡演 (xúnyǎn) - Tour (as in a performance tour)创意 (chuàngyì) - Creative/Innovative主线 (zhǔxiàn) - Mainline/Plot (in the context of a story or performance)留言本 (liúyánběn) - Guestbook生命 (shēngmìng) - Life拒绝 (jùjué) - Reject/Refuse特别 (tèbié) - Special经久不息 (jīngjiǔbùxī) - Unceasing/Continuous (applause in this context) 一怒之下 (yī nù zhī xià) - In a fit of anger (literally: under one's anger)芭蕾舞团 (bāléiwǔtuán) - Ballet troupe献上 (xiànshàng) - Present/Offer染 (rǎn) - Dye失落 (shīluò) - Disappointed/DowncastSupport the showThank you for listening. However, when you are resilient, focused, and true to yourself, your dreams will come true in a way you might not expect, which can be more special than what you would have created for yourself. Sometimes we don't see ourselves at different levels of success because of what people say and perceive about us.
