Listen now to the first episode of Sarah's new 8-part series with CBC Podcasts, The Devil You Know.In the 1980s and 90s, Satan and his followers were accused of brainwashing children, sacrificing babies, and infiltrating North American society on a massive scale — yet these thousands of alleged Satanists were nowhere to be found. In this all new series, host Sarah Marshall explores the tangled web of the Satanic Panic, in a journey that will take you everywhere from Victoria, B.C. to rural Kentucky to San Antonio, Texas. This is a show about the people who experienced the panic in real-time — the believers, the skeptics, the bystanders, and the wrongfully-convicted. This is a show about the people who experienced the Satanic Panic in real-time — the believers, the skeptics, the bystanders, and the wrongfully-convicted. What was it like to be a psychologist told to look for Satanists in every case; a mother slowly recovering memories of supposed Satanic abuse; a teenager accused of conspiracy to murder? The stories of these eyewitnesses point us toward the real underlying problems — individual and societal — that the Panic was a response to. The fault, as ever, was not with Satanists, but in ourselves. You can find more episodes of The Devil You Know wherever you get your podcasts, and here: https://link.mgln.ai/TDYKxHW
Is it evil… or just excellent branding? This week, Amanda & Reese are joined by writer and podcaster Sarah Marshall (You're Wrong About) to descend into The Cult of Satanism: The spooky, sexy, misunderstood belief system that terrified suburban moms everywhere. We're talking devilish imagery, political theater, and the delicious irony of a religion that doesn't actually believe in the Devil. From Anton LaVey's campy theatrics to the Wayfair trafficking conspiracy, we're unpacking how Satanism became the perfect scapegoat for America's moral panic and how the real horror show was the Satanic Panic itself. So light your black candles, clutch your pearls, and prepare to sell your soul (metaphorically, of course). Because when it comes to culty influence, the devil's in the details.

Sarah Marshall is a writer and podcaster, best known as the cohost of You're Wrong About and creator of The Devil You Know, a CBC podcast series exploring the Satanic Panic which explores how a wave of moral hysteria in the 1980s fused pop culture, politics, and fear into an era where heavy metal lyrics and daycare centers became symbols of evil. In today's episode she and Amanda discuss why this moment still echoes today in new forms of conspiracy thinking, and how looking back helps us understand the stories we tell to feel safe—and the ones that turn us against each other. In this powerful two-part conclusion, Abby's story reaches a shocking and emotional climax. After surviving a devastating sexual assault, she finds herself drawn back to her ex, Peter, who weaponizes her trauma, manipulates her into taking psychiatric medication, and ultimately coerces her into creating non-consensual OnlyFans content under her own name. As Abby's world unravels—from financial exploitation and digital trafficking to secret surveillance and forced “swinger” events—she begins to reclaim her clarity, her body, and her freedom. With the help of an unexpected ally, she escapes the marriage and exposes the horrifying ways predators are exploiting online sex-work platforms without accountability. Sarah Marshall is here to teach me about the confounding phenomenon of Spontaneous Human Combustion in which a person is found almost totally incinerated with no explanation, seeming to have burst into flames from within. In this two-part episode, Abby shares a harrowing story that begins as a sweet college romance but quickly twists into a nightmare of manipulation, stalking, medical and mental health gaslighting, and a violent sexual assault—one her abuser later weaponized to force his way back into her life. Part one exposes the classic Dogfish playbook: love bombing, isolation, lies, and control. Next week in part two, we enter a whole new level of exploitation, one that may feel disturbingly familiar if you remember our OnlyFans Pimp cases. Trigger warnings: sexual assault/rape, coercive control, mental-health gaslighting, and online sexual exploitation. Click here to join our Patreon! Careful! This one is disturbing. In the early 2000s, women in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, lived in fear. Two different predators were stalking the city, leaving a trail of terror and death. While authorities were hunting for one killer, another, even more depraved murderer was operating completely under the radar. For ten years, Sean Vincent Gillis lived a chilling double life, murdering at least eight women, and the details of his crimes are beyond deranged. Even other serial killers are disturbed by him. He wasn't some dark, shadowy figure who stood out from the crowd. To all who knew him, he was just an ordinary guy, not the monster that was hiding in plain sight. Join Jen and Cam as they talk about "The Butcher of Baton Rouge: Sean Vincent Gillis." Be sure to stay and listen to the promo for Ghost Bites. Last week we told you about Alana Carroll, a young woman who has been missing for 2 years now. Speaking with Joyce and Melissa, Alana's family members, we learned about the accident that changed Alana's life. This week, Alana's family shares more about the theories they've heard and rumors surrounding Alana's disappearance and presumed death. By sharing this information her family hopes those with answers will come forward so they can find their beloved Alana. For photos of Alana, the car accident she survived and what her body went through, visit our blog at murderintherain.comCourt records: Witnesses say man called ‘freaking out' with missing woman's body - Missing Clark County woman now presumed dead, investigators have identified a suspect - The Columbian - https://wsp.wa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Alana-Carroll.pdf - Clark County deputies confirm death of woman missing since 2023 - Alana Ranae Carroll – The Charley Project - Missing woman Alana Carroll presumed dead in Clark County - BeenVerified - Alana Carroll - Illegal substances are part of addiction problem in Oregon, but alcohol is biggest killer - OPB - Opioid Data | Washington State Department of Health - FindAGrave.com - The Columbian - Oct. 3 2000- Obituary - Been Verified Court Cases - BG man arrested for weapons, heroin possession | The Reflector - The Daily Astorian - Nov 29 1982- Marijuana Seized - The Columbian - June 30 1992 - Editorial - The Columbian - July 24 1992 - Editorial - Longview Daily News - May 27 2011 - Police Blotter -BG man arrested for weapons, heroin possession | The Reflector -The Columbian Nov 29 1982- Bust (PHOTO) - The Columbian Jan 20 1983 - Family pleads guilty to selling marijuana - The Columbian Feb 25 1983 - Kidnapped boy pleads guilty - The Columbian March 31 1983 - Courts - The Columbian June 4 2008 - Suspected heroin dealer arrested in Battle Ground - BeenVerified.com - Luke A. Today the boys discuss the the reality of the Hughes Bros. A Pucker snake draft of the week. A Devil You Know?
Last year, after our True Crime Tuesday segment aired on KOIN's AM Extra, we received an email from the family of Alana Carroll- a woman whose story we had featured. Melissa, Alana's Aunt, along with Joyce, Alana's Grandmother, wanted to share Alana's story. For someone who didn't know Alana, her disappearance can be easily ignored, forgotten, or dismissed. As is the case with anyone who disappears or is murdered, there is so much more to the story and person. Alana wasn't disposable. She wasn't a junkie who no one loved. She was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a friend. And this August will mark two years since she was last seen alive. Her family is desperate for answers…and they hope you can help find their beloved Alana. Este episodio forma parte de una selección para el verano de EL PAÍS Audio. In episode 4 of The Right Kind of Family, our reporters travel back to Spain, a country which has become a model in the development of progressive transgender rights at the national and regional level. In 2023, the Spanish Congress passed the so-called Trans Law, which focuses primarily on allowing individuals to change their name and gender on ID cards without requiring medical reports. However, Spain is also a country which saw the birth of the VOX, a party whose political platform hinges about the concept of "gender idoleology". Crucially, VOX is also one of the initiators of the Political Network for Values. Understanding the rise of the Political Network for Values implies understanding how gender politics has shaped Spain and Europe over the past two decades. In this unforgettable episode, Dr. John Price sits down with writer, ritualist, and mytho-technologist Sean Manseau, whose work bridges depth psychology, psychedelics, performance, and esoteric theology. Together, they explore Entheogenic Fitness Training (EFT)—a radical spiritual system designed for the metamodern age. EFT combines physical resistance training, psychedelic states, mythic storytelling, and ritual performance to create a structured path of transformation. At its core is the archetype of the Phonomancer—a shamanic superhero trained to channel divine energy through movement, voice, and ecstatic states. Sean also shares the inner journey behind his visionary book The Devil You Know, a Jungian-style self-analysis written as a dialogue between two imagined selves. This conversation offers a deep dive into imagination, magic, trauma, shadow work, and the struggle to maintain integrity while mapping new sacred ground. From ayahuasca visions to ecstatic dance, from black magic to simulated belief, this is a conversation for those willing to question what's real, what's possible, and what the future of spiritual practice might become. Topics Covered: How suffering can become sacred resistance Psychedelics as initiatory stressors (not just therapy) Make-Believe vs. Make-Belief as spiritual technology Designing a religion for the age of simulation The adversary as a real force in consciousness Ritual performance as a container for ego death From anima to AI: dialoguing with the inner divine Addiction, psychosis, and how to build inner structure The idea of “Functional Enlightenment” and training spiritual capacity Gnosis, the Christ archetype, and becoming a conscious myth-maker In This Episode (00:00) Introduction and updates (06:35) Ayahuasca, ritual, and the origin of EFT (13:00) Phonomantic method and psychedelic training (17:00) Make-believe, religion, and sacred play (22:00) Ecstatic states, magic, and the imaginal (30:00) Dark magic, possession, and archetypal rage (35:00) Writing The Devil You Know as active imagination (41:00) Addiction, psychosis, and safety in altered states (49:00) Resistance, shamanic ecology, and loving the adversary (57:00) What is Functional Enlightenment? In episode 3 of The Right Kind of Family, we travel to Italy, a country which has become a model for how it has been limiting access to abortion for women in subtle ways. In fact, the country ruled by Giorgia Meloni's Brother of Italy, represents a playbook for how it is possible to curtail abortions in a context where the Law formally provides free access to it. Starting from Naples, through Rome and reaching the north-western city of Turin, the reporters uncover how the anti-abortion playbook unfolds and impacts women's lives. In episode 2 of The Right Kind of Family, our reporters travel to Hungary, a country ruled by Viktor Orban's Fidezs party since 2010. This relatively small central European country has surged to the role of ideological cornerstone for the Political Network for Values and its members. In particular, our reporters focus on one specific dimension of the policies enacted by the Orban over the past decade: family policies as a tool to stop population decline. The Hungarian government proudly defines its country as a family-friendly land. But what exactly are the famed policies of the Hungarian government, and how do they affect Hungarian households and women? What do Hungarians think about them, and ultimately, are they effective in halting population decline? In episode 1 of The Right Kind of Family, reporters Claudia Torrisi, Elsa Cabria, Francesca Berardi and Lili Rutai are in Madrid, in the Spanish Senate. They follow the works of the "VI Transatlantic Summit for Freedom and the Culture of Life", a closed session “in defence of life and the natural family.” The meeting serves also as the sixth international gathering of the Political Network for Values, a network established in 2014 in a room at the UN headquarters, in New York. The reporters follow the debates and key note speeches of the participants, uncovering the international reach of this network as well as its rhetoric and political ambitions. Far from being a EU-focused network, the Political Network for Values has strong US- and Latin Amrican-connections. However, one specific European country appears to play a leading role. Send us a text There's an old saying: "Better the devil you know than the devil you don't."It's a fitting lens for this episode because sometimes, even when something is terrible, it's familiar. Today, we're going to examine two cases with a chilling common thread: domestic violence that didn't just leave bruises or broken bones but left behind permanent, life-altering disfigurement. And yet, perhaps even more shocking than the brutality itself... is that the victims, against all odds, took their abusers back. We'll navigate the tangled web of trauma, hope, fear, and survival and in doing so, perhaps offer strength, courage, and a voice to those still trapped in the shadows of abuse. On a hot Texas night in July 1988, Shane Stewart and Sally McNelly disappeared after attending Fourth of July fireworks in San Angelo. Months later, their bodies were discovered near a reservoir, both executed with a shotgun blast. Evil, is something that lurks around us every day. Some may say its just a circumstantial matter while others are certain a person has to be possessed to do what they did. Whether you believe one over the other or not, the reality is horrific things happen do still happen. One such man, William Cruse eventually snapped and committed acts that were callous and cold. En el primer episodio, cuatro periodistas de Hungría, Italia y España se encuentran en Madrid. In this revealing episode of The MCP, I sit down with Grammy-nominated songwriter, guitarist, and Americana mainstay Will Kimbrough for a wide-ranging conversation on the hard truths and quiet joys of a life in music. From his early days as a 12 year old electric guitar player to getting signed to EMI, and then John Prine's Oh Boy Records, to his work with Jimmy Buffett, Shemekia Copeland, and Todd Snider, Will offers a masterclass in musical longevity, humility, and hustle.A few of the stories and names he mentions reminded me of what I sometimes foolishly take for granted — namely my geographical proximity to musical greatness. For instance celebrated producer Jay Joyce has a studio not 50 hundred feet away from where I now sit, and in the other direction, three houses opposite, is Eric McConnell's studio, the legendary location where was recorded my favorite album of all time, Todd Snider's East Nashville Skyline.Incidentally, in the picture at top I am sitting across the table from that album's producer. I was so excited I had to share the story of discovering that album in a CD listening station at Waterloo records in Austin in the closing moments of an otherwise very dismal experience, which was me playing SXSW in 2004. That album is why I moved to East Nashville, and why I live there still. Crazy but true.Back to Will. Kimbrough opens up about navigating the highs and lows of the industry—learning to trust a team, the freedom of doing things DIY, and how obligation can become an artist's best creative ally. His career parallels a number of iconic Nashville personalities and institutions, like Mike Grimes (with whom Kimbrough formed the beloved trio the Bis-quits and signed to Prine's Oh Boy Records). Finally we get into his life-changing work with veterans through Songwriting with Soldiers and post-traumatic growth programs, and share a few stories about sobriety (his, mostly) and how he's managed to steer clear of some of the darker potholes that might have otherwise claimed a career now well into in its fourth decade. And yes—there's a live performance Kimbrough's song “For the Life of Me,” with me in there on guitar.00:00:00 "Desired Obligation" 00:01:08 Congrats on the Grammy Nom, Will 00:03:06 What caught your ear early on? 00:04:12 Seeing Bruce Springsteen on your 12th birthday 00:05:19 Riffing with Doyle at Grimey's about the power of earlier radio 00:06:18 The first thing Will did with an electric guitar 00:09:04 Constant Throughput makes you less precious 00:10:19 Riffing on Jay Joyce 00:11:51 Getting signed - "the shackles were on" 00:17:22 The collateral positives of getting signed 00:20:18 how to negotiate the tension between personal freedom and teamwork 00:23:11 Meeting Jimmy Buffett through Todd Snider 00:24:32 Trying to get dropped and forming the Bis-quits 00:26:49 Energy optimism and drive in finding a manager or launching a record 00:27:20 Why is it you make your best work when you're in a bad way? 00:28:48 Will's collective songwriting 00:31:31 Writing records with Todd Snider East Nashville Skyline and the Devil You Know 00:32:33 Korby's "East Nashville Skyline" story 00:35:54 The story about Todd Snider's fallout with Jimmy Buffett 00:38:00 Getting addicted to the school of Todd and Rodney Crowell and that crew 00:38:56 A version of the dream as expressed by Korby 00:39:55 Working with Shemekia Copeland 00:40:44 Warrior PATHH program 00:41:39 Wills Bob Dylan movie story 00:44:42 Setting up "For the Life of Me" live in studio 00:53:06 Will Kimbrough performs "For the Life of Me" 00:57:07 "Addicted to gratitude" 00:59:53 A story about John Prine's "Hello in there" 01:02:50 Are you melancholy or even-keeled? 01:05:41 How have you stayed open to the constant change? 01:07:30 Some notes on sobriety 01:12:27 That plato quote about everyone is fighting a hard battle 01:15:17 Talking about reading and writing 01:17:15 How a story about a song connects people 01:18:00 A story about writing with Jimmy Buffett Get full access to The Morse Code with Korby Lenker at korby.substack.com/subscribe
