Our feature monster this week is one whose stories are spun out of urban legends, making him a more recent addition to the monster roster. It's time to talk about the mysterious Mothman. And while we're at it, we'll meet some other mythological figures of fate, destiny, and bad luck from Greek, Celtic, and Germanic mythologies. Visit the World of Mythik website to learn more and to contribute your theories to our board! All stories told on Myths & Muses are original family-friendly adaptations of ancient myths and legends. Stories from ancient mythology can also sometimes deal with complicated topics for young listeners — to the mortal parents and caretakers reading this, we encourage listening along with your young demigods to help them navigate those topics as they explore these epic tales. The Muses of Greek mythology were nine goddesses associated with the arts, sciences, and memory. They were the source of inspiration for artists, thinkers, poets, dancers, musicians, and philosophers. They were the goddesses of knowledge, embodying the wisdom and creative power found in poetry, songs, and myths. This is the point: a muse is never an actual woman. When a man chooses a flesh-and-blood woman to be his muse, she becomes the symbol of something deeper, wiser, and much more mysterious than herself.A muse is a point of access that puts a man in touch with his feminine side while allowing him to pretend that he does not have a feminine side.A muse is essentially the Jungian anima, the perfect woman who exists only in the imagination of a man.Just now, my muse whispered to me,“The reader will want to ask you, ‘What is a woman's muse?'”“What shall I tell them?”“Tell them to ask a woman,” she said.In his book, The Magic Synthesis, Silvano Arieti writes,“Creative products are always shiny and new; the creative process is ancient and unchanging.”Arieti believed that perception is not just binary, with logic on the left side and pattern recognition on the right. He believed that our minds can blend rational with irrational, sophisticated with primitive, conscious with subconscious to create a third type of perception known as “creativity.”Psychology Today begins their praise of Arieti with this paragraph:“Silvano Arieti's book Interpretation of Schizophrenia was awarded the 1975 U.S. National Book Award in the Science category. More than 40 years later, it remains the most significant contribution to the psychological understanding of schizophrenia since Kraepelin and Bleuler. Contemporary psychiatrists and psychotherapists would be wise to review Arieti's vast contributions to the field.”Silvano Arieti was born in 1914. When he died in 1981, Arieti was perhaps the world's foremost authority on schizophrenia. He wrote an award-winning book about it.The other book he wrote was about creativity.Coincidence? Perhaps. But I am convinced that creativity is a mild form of schizophrenia. How else would you describe a marvelous blend of rational with irrational, sophisticated with primitive, conscious with subconscious?Creativity is a wild and spontaneous act employed by artists, thinkers, poets, dancers, musicians, and philosophers. It is that conflicted insanity to which our Muses give us access.I think that “mild schizophrenia” is the perfect description. But perhaps I am wrong. In this episode, I talk with Raymond DiGiuseppe, Professor of Psychology at St. John's University and Director of Professional Education at the Albert Ellis Institute. Professor DiGiuseppe is a renowned figure in the field of cognitive-behavioral therapy, particularly Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). He's also done extensive work on anger. This is a special episode in which we take a deep dive into the Stoic anger management strategies described in the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. How valuable are these ancient strategies when viewed from the perspective of modern evidence-based psychotherapy.Stoicism: Philosophy as a Way of Life is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Highlights* The Stoic theory of anger as a “desire for revenge”* Avoid mind-reading: “[When getting offended:] remember that you can't be sure that they are doing wrong, because many actions serve some other purpose. Generally speaking, a great deal of experience is needed before one can confidently express an opinion about what someone else is doing.”* Consider the whole character: “Remember how they behave while eating, while reclining on their couches, and so on, and most importantly how their beliefs leave them no choice, and how they pride themselves on what they do.”* Attribute actions to ignorance rather than malice: “For no soul is voluntarily deprived of the truth and by the same token no soul is voluntarily deprived of the ability to [judge the worth of things properly]. Indeed, people don't like to be called unjust, discourteous, and avaricious, or, in general, to be thought of as someone likely to wrong their neighbors.”* Contemplate impermanence: “When you're too angry or impatient, remember that human life is fleeting and before long all of us will have been laid to rest.”* Cognitive distancing: “Remember that it is not people's actions that disturb us (because their actions are [their own business]), but our opinions of their actions. At any rate, eliminate the judgment that they're doing something hurtful, and be willing to let go of it, and anger comes to an end.”* Anger does us more harm than the things we're angry about: “Remember that we suffer more from getting angry and upset about such things than we do from the things themselves.”* Kindness and other virtues can replace anger: “Remember that kindness is unconquerable if it's genuine, not phony or feigned. After all, what can even the most abusive person in the world do to you if you keep on being kind to him and, if the opportunity arises, gently offer him advice and take the time to show him the error of his ways right when he's trying to do you harm?”* Recognize your own flaws: “Remember that you yourself often do wrong and are no better than them. Even if you refrain from certain kinds of transgressions, you still have the capacity to commit them.”* Do not demand perfection from others: “[And you can accept a tenth gift, from Apollo, the Leader of the Muses:] the proposition that it's insanity to expect flawed men never to do wrong, because that would be desiring the impossible..”* Remember, nature gave you the potential to overcome anger and conflict: “First, remember the various kinds of relationship I have with [others]: we were born to help one another.”* Are there other relevant attitudes that Marcus Aurelius doesn't mention?Links* Profile at St John's University* Profile at the Albert Ellis Institute* Google Scholar ProfileThanks for reading Stoicism: Philosophy as a Way of Life! We start with the many-headed Hydra, who had the misfortune to be one of Heracles's many targets, but who got the consolation prize of becoming a constellation. Then we'll look at that constellation's story in Mesopotamian mythology and we'll meet an eight-headed serpent-dragon from Japanese mythology. BEST OF: The 2024 MTV VMA was another example of a powerful religious-cult operating through entertainment to influence society. Taylor Swift was awarded Video of the Year, Sabrina Carpenter won Song of the Year, Katy Perry won the Vanguard Award and performed a gravity defying song, and Megan Thee Stallion performed Mamushi with Yuki Chiba. Swift has stayed in the news for her endorsement of Kamala Harris, and when winning her aware she thanked her boyfriend Travis Kelce who may also now be encouraged to endorse Harris - recall other were involved with ERAS-ERIS, the goddess of discord. But Taylor Swift isn't as powerful as she may seem, certainly not to make her own decisions. Not only has she called out the Soros family for stripping her of music rights but most of her music itself is written by someone else. Jack Antonoff was behind ‘Look What You Made Me Do', and countless other songs not to mention his work with Lana Del Rey, Aaron Dessner was behind Willow, and countless other songs, and both Max Martin and his protege Shellback contribute heavily to her discography. People like Martin have been operating in the music industry for decades, writing dozens of hits - 26 Number One hits - for everyone from the Backstreet Boys and Brittany Spears (Hit Me Baby One More Time), to Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift. Further, he obtains the lyrics and beats through a sort of channeling. Even Elton John does this through mixing word cutouts to write songs. In the world of comics we find an equivalent character in Alan Moore, a magician behind iconic works like V For Vendetta and Watchmen. Moore is also open about his worship of a Greco-Roman snake god named Glycon, a deity of oracle and moneymaking. The difference between obtaining influence from the MUSES or power from unconscious DEMONS is what the byproduct of the contract is: beauty or ugliness. The song Mamushi features the profaning of and degrading not of America but of Japan, as Thee Stallion encourages Japanese girls to be promiscuous and lure men to their death. In the song, Megan literally is naked on a rock like a Siren, in a sacred Onsen, where she then pollutes the purifying water and transforms into a Mamushi snake to kill a man. A 2023 song by Sabrina Carpenter was filmed in a church and her video was so perverse and disgusting the priests had to re-bless the altar when she left. These images are far different than the music, sculptures, and paintings of artists throughout history. Perry's VMA performance featured the arch of hysteria from witchcraft, a portal, and we assume from the other side came an alien who Sabrina Carpenter kissed on television. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. This episode explores one of the cleverest monsters on our list: the Nine-Tailed Fox of East Asian mythology! But how do you tell a kitsune from a huli jing from a gumiho? The women who loved Picasso shaped his art in surprising ways.--YOUR NEXT EPISODE:Why we can't let go of Never Let Me Go--"We look at paintings to imagine other worlds, other times. They are doors into an alternative, creative way of life."So writes Sue Roe in her latest book, Hidden Portraits: the Untold Story of Six Women Who loved Picasso. And if there was ever an artist who opened the door to an alternative view of the world, surely Picasso qualifies: unorthodox, exhilarating, and experimental, his art broke new ground and made him the most successful artist of the 20th century. But as is so often the case, his work was underpinned by a series of women - remarkable women - whom Picasso loved, and seemingly attempted to control.Sue Roe's book tells their stories in turn, unveiling their extraordinary lives, exploring the impact they had on the artist and he on them.In doing so it reveals, without moralising, some patterns of behaviour by Picasso which one might conclude were, at best, controlling and manipulative. This opens up the fashionable question in 2025: can we appreciate the art while recognising that the artist could be a very unpleasant human being.--BUYHidden Portraits: the Untold Story of Six Women who Loved PicassoREADPicasso's mistreated muses - book review by Sue PrideauxLISTEN AD-FREEDownload the New Statesman app: iOS / AndroidSTAY IN TOUCHGet our best writing every weekend in The Saturday Read email newsletter Hosted on Acast. #1,060 - Laurence Leamer Are you here? Alright, folks, buckle up and adjust those earbuds, because it's time to kick off another electrifying episode of The Paul Leslie Hour! Your host is cranking up the charm and sittin' down with a bona fide literary rockstar—bestselling author Lawrence Leamer! At a sprightly 83, this guy's got more stories than a jukebox has tunes. It's gonna be a rollercoaster, and you've got the best seat in the house! Leamer's pulling back the curtain on his latest masterpiece, Warhol's Muses—a dazzling deep dive into Andy Warhol's colorful crew of leading ladies that'll have you seeing pop art in a whole new light. But that's just the appetizer! He's serving up hot takes on keeping pals across the political aisle when everyone's ready to rumble, tossing some playful shade at the glitzy, gilded shallowness of Palm Beach's elite, and—hold onto your hats—dropping the scoop on his next big gig: a biography of JFK himself! That's right, Camelot's getting the Leamer treatment, and we're all invited along for the ride. The chat takes a wild detour through the war on drugs—because, why not?—before Leamer lands the plane with a wink and a nudge. Swing by www.thepaulleslie.com/support and toss a little love our way! We're mighty grateful for every ear that tunes in and every hand that chips in—so let's keep this party rockin'!

Dante approaches the gates of hell! Dcn. Harrison Garlick is joined by Dr. Jennifer Frey, the Dean of the new Honors College at the University of Tulsa, and Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson, the Fletcher Jones Chair of Great Books at Pepperdine University, to discuss cantos 2-5 of Dante's Inferno.Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com. Check out OUR GUIDE to Dante's Inferno: 80+ Questions and Answers.13. What happens in the Vestibule of Hell (Cantos 2-3)?The narrative of the Dark Woods in Canto 1 is arguably the introduction to the entire Divine Comedy, and as such, Canto 2 serves as the introduction to the first volume or canticle, the Inferno.[1] Note that Dante begins the Canto by invoking the Muses, which was common in the “classic epic tradition.”[2] The Canto explains that the Virgin Mary took pity on Dante, and she told Saint Lucia to help him. St. Lucia then asked Beatrice, a soul in heaven who knows Dante, to help Dante; Beatrice then went into hell and asked Virgil to be Dante's guide.[3] Whereas the three beasts of Canto I represent the threefold structure of hell, the three ladies of Canto 2 represent grace.[4] His heart emboldened, Dante and Virgil enter the “deep and rugged road” and arrive at the gate of hell.[5] The inscription of the gate reads:I AM THE WAY INTO THE DOLEFUL CITY / I AM THE WAY INTO ETERNAL GRIEF, /I AM THE WAY TO A FORSAKEN RACE. JUSTICE IT WAS THAT MOVED MY GREAT CREATOR; / DIVINE OMNIPOTENCE CREATED ME, / AND HIGHEST WISDOM JOINED WITH PRIMAL LOVE. BEFORE ME NOTHING BUT ETERNAL THINGS / WERE MADE, AND I SHALL LAST ETERNALLY. / ABANDON EVERY HOPE, ALL WHO ENTER.[6] Upon passing through the gates, the Pilgrim hears the “sighs and cries and shrieks of lamentations echo[ing] throughout the starless air of Hell.”[7] Virgil and the Pilgrim enter into the Vestibule of Hell, which is populated by souls who lived a lukewarm life with “no blame and no praise,” and by the angels who at Lucifer's great rebellion remained undecided.[8] Here, Dante the Poet introduces the concept of contrapasso, i.e., “the just punishment of sin, effected by a process either resembling or contrasting with the sin itself.”[9] In the Vestibule, the contrapasso for the souls and angels who lived undecided is to eternally march after a banner.[10] Amongst “great a number,” the Pilgrim sees the shade of the “coward who had made the great refusal.”[11] While there are many interpretations, “perhaps it is most likely that this shade is Pontius Pilate, who refused to pass sentence on Christ.”[12] Virgil and the Pilgrim come to the river Acheron where they
Recently, I had the honor of being the moderator for the 8x Grammy-nominated musical genius Tori Amos to promote her gorgeous new children's book Tori and the Muses. I have to say this was one of the best experiences I've ever had. I was super nervous before the show, but the moment Tori and I walked on stage together, I felt completely at home and we had a fun, heartfelt and inspiring conversation. I am grateful for how open she was and how comfortable she made me feel onstage and off. To all of her fans - she is exactly as kind and magical as you could imagine her to be. A special thank you to Anderson's Bookshop, my husband Patrick, my friend Matt, John Witherspoon and of course the sensational Tori Amos. I will treasure this night forever.
