Before Salem, there was Connecticut. In this episode of Lunatics Radio Hour, Abby Brenker sits down with historian Josh Hutchinson to explore the Connecticut Witch Trials, which spanned 1647 to 1697 and led to 11 executions decades before the events in Salem. They discuss the Puritan beliefs and English laws that shaped colonial prosecutions, the role of coerced confessions and spectral evidence, and the social instability that fueled accusations. The episode examines cases including Alse (Alice) Young, Mary Johnson, Goody Bassett, Goodwife Knapp, Katherine Harrison, and the 1662 Hartford executions.Josh also shares insights from his work with the Connecticut Witch Trial Exoneration Project and discusses ongoing efforts to formally clear the names of those convicted.A factual look at one of early America's lesser known chapters of legal and religious history.Sources discussed include:– Amanda Pitts, NBC CT https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/four-decades-before-salem-there-were-witch-trials-in-connecticut/3407226/– Research by Josh Hutchinson https://www.legendsofamerica.com/mary-johnson-witch/– William K. In this message from our Christmas series A Patchwork Christmas, Pastor Mary Johnson walks through the story of Joseph and the unexpected pain he faced when life did not turn out the way he imagined. Teaching from Matthew 1, she reminds us that devastation is a real part of life, but God meets us in the middle of our brokenness rather than minimizing it.This message explores how God speaks during seasons of pain, how He reframes our perspective, and how faith often requires trusting Him when the situation defies logic. Through Joseph's obedience, we see how God can turn pain into purpose and weave broken plans into His greater story. If you are navigating grief, uncertainty, or disappointment, this message offers hope that God is near, faithful, and at work even when the path feels unclear.Watch the full message here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l99-gPWaNnA

Dr. J Calvin Schermerhorn is a professor of history in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies at Arizona State University. His books include The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815–1860, and Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery. He lives in Tempe, AZ. The long history of the racial wealth gap in America told through the stories of seven Black families who struggled to build wealth over multiple generationsWealth is central to the American pursuit of happiness and is an overriding measure of well-being. Yet wealth is conspicuously absent from African American households. Why do some 3.5 million Black American families have zero or negative wealth? In The Plunder of Black America: How the Racial Wealth Gap Was Made (Yale UP, 2025) historian Calvin Schermerhorn traces four hundred years of Black dispossession and decapitalization—what Frederick Douglass called plunder—through the stories of families who have strived to earn and keep the fruits of their toils. Their struggles reveal that the ever-evolving strategies to strip Black income and wealth have been critical to sustaining a structure of racialized disadvantage. These accounts also tell of the quiet heroism of those who worked to overcome obstacles and defy the plunder. From the story of Anthony and Mary Johnson, abducted from Angola and brought to Virginia in 1619, to the enslaved Black workers dispossessed by the Custis-Washington family, to Venture Smith (born Broteer Furro), who purchased his freedom, to three generations of a family enslaved in the South who moved north after Emancipation, to the Tulsa massacre and the subprime lending crisis, Schermerhorn shows that we cannot reckon with today's racial wealth inequality without understanding its unrelenting role in American history. In 2016, 21-year-old Keeshae Jacobs disappeared after telling her mom she would return the next day. Nearly a decade later, she's still missing—but someone has admitted to knowing what happened. In this episode, I expose the disturbing connections between Keeshae's disappearance and the 2022 killing of Ashley Fowler—whose alleged killer also claimed responsibility for Keeshae's disappearance. I also cover the tragedy that befell the Jacobs family mere months after Keeshae's disappearance, leaving her mother heartbroken and devastated Why was his confession never pursued? Why has this case gone cold despite multiple opportunities for answers and why was a mother, desperate for answers ignored by the police?  how many families have to suffer before justice is taken seriously? We honor Keeshae's story, advocate for the families affected, and ask the questions law enforcement hasn't. But plastic isn't just in the environment: it's now in our bodies. Microplastics have been found in our bloodstreams, lungs, and other organs, and we're only recently beginning to understand how this affects our health. In this episode, host Samantha Laine Perfas, cell biologist Don Ingber, environmental health scientist Mary Johnson, and nanomaterial researcher Philip Demokritou discuss our destructive relationship with plastic.
