Mitch shares the story of his family's six-generation farming operation in the Red River Valley, where they grow sugar beets, wheat, corn, soybeans, sunflowers, and edible beans. He explains how sugar beets are planted, managed, harvested, stored, and ultimately processed into the table sugar Americans use every day. The conversation covers: The history of Mitch's family farm dating back to an 1800s wagon train from Iowa to North Dakota What makes sugar beets different from traditional row crops How sugar beet seed is produced and planted Disease, insect, and fertility management in sugar beet production The unique harvest process involving defoliators, lifters, and pilers Why sugar beet harvest becomes a 24-hour operation How sugar beets are stored through North Dakota winters The role of American Crystal Sugar Cooperative Sugar beet pricing, quotas, and marketing Why sugar policy matters to American farmers The difference between beet sugar and cane sugar The challenges facing today's sugar industry Social media, agriculture advocacy, and telling agriculture's story Listeners will also hear about the specialized equipment used during harvest, including Arts Way sugar beet harvesters and defoliators, along with some entertaining stories about sugar beet crews, harvest culture, and life in the Red River Valley. Whether you're a farmer, consumer, or simply curious about where sugar comes from, this episode delivers a fun and educational look at one of agriculture's most misunderstood crops. Most importantly, Mitch shares how faith, family, and farming continue to guide both his operation and his mission to educate consumers about modern agriculture. Want Farm4Profit Merch? This week on The Food Professor Podcast, Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois sit down with Don Hill, Chairman of Sucro, for a rare inside look at one of the most significant investments in Canada's food manufacturing sector in decades. Sucro has quickly become one of North America's fastest-growing sugar companies, and its newly built Ontario refinery marks the first major new sugar-refining investment in Canada in generations. Don explains why Canada became Sucro's first major international investment market, how the company is challenging conventional thinking in a traditionally conservative industry, and why innovation, reinvestment, and operational efficiency are becoming critical competitive advantages in food manufacturing. The conversation explores the strategic role sugar plays in food production beyond sweetness, including shelf life, texture, functionality, product formulation, and cost management. Don also discusses how Sucro is navigating labour shortages, global trade disruptions, tariffs, supply chain volatility, and geopolitical uncertainty while building what he believes is the most modern and competitive sugar refinery in North America. Michael and Sylvain also dive into the impact of GLP-1 weight-loss medications on food consumption with Don, the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence in manufacturing, and why Canada remains an attractive destination for food production despite growing trade tensions and policy uncertainty. Don shares his perspective on the future of food manufacturing investment, North American competitiveness, and Sucro's plans for growth over the next decade. Before the interview, the hosts tackle another packed week of food and agriculture news. They discuss Canada's economic outlook and the debate over recession terminology, new research comparing household food spending across G20 countries, and the ongoing rise in food insecurity and food bank usage across Canada. The discussion also covers soaring tomato prices linked to North American trade disruptions, new revelations surrounding the Canada Royal Milk infant formula facility in Kingston, and concerns about transparency within Canada's supply-managed dairy sector. The episode also reflects on Metro CEO Eric La Flèche's retirement announcement, examining his lasting impact on Canadian grocery retailing and congratulating the highly skilled and experienced Marc Giroux on becoming the new CEO. Finally, Michael and Sylvain explore how some farmers are finding new revenue streams through YouTube and digital content creation, demonstrating the remarkable adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit of modern agriculture. he world's largest producer of cane sugar is planning its largest-ever capital expenditure to overhaul a historic — and timeworn — refinery near New Orleans.American Sugar Refining this week broke ground on the first phase of what the company said would be a $785 million project to modernize the — the largest sugar processing plant in the Western Hemisphere.Initial construction, which is already underway, will build a new $200 million process building by 2028; state and company officials said that modernizing the overall campus' refining capabilities would allow it to meet future demand, improve reliability, and reduce both water and energy use. Additional phases, officials said, would build on those process improvements, but the announcement did not outline the next steps of the overall project — or a timetable for starting them.ASR said that it anticipates adding 15 jobs to its current workforce of 500. NOLA.com reports that the state's incentive package for the project included a 80% property tax abatement over 10 years. The Chalmette Refinery began operations at the campus along the Mississippi River in 1909, and it wears the scars of a 117-year history that has included hurricanes, fires and dramatic changes in the sugar market. Its 32 production lines can reportedly produce some 6 million pounds of sugar per day across dozens of product platforms. #manufacturing, #foodsupply, #sugarindustry, #refinery, #infrastructure, #capitalinvestment, #industrialupgrade, #madeinusa, #supplychain, #foodmanufacturing, #energyefficiency, #sustainability, #industrialnews, #businessnews, #louisiana, #economicdevelopment, #manufacturingjobs, #plantmodernization, #operations, #industryupdates

In Hawaii, it's hard to imagine any recent story bigger or deeper than water. The Lahaina wildfire that killed over 100 people and destroyed the entire town was fueled by uncontrolled dry grass on former sugar fields. West Maui was already the epicenter of the debate over who uses, controls, and profits from our precious, and often scarce, water supply. To become akamai on the issue, Hawaii News Now political and government reporter Daryl Huff sat down with Dr. Jonathan Likeke Scheuer, chair of the East Maui Regional Community Board (Water Authority) and former chair of the state Land Use Commission. Scheuer explained: How the sugar industry took control of stream water across the state. How Maui's water policy is related to the Lahaina wildfire disaster. Whether commercial development can coexist with stream restoration and stream-based agriculture. The state's messaging and actions on water policy. The South African government first proposed a 20% sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in 2016. However, after extensive consultations with the beverage and sugar industries, the levy was reduced to approximately 10%, coming into effect in April 2018. Despite this lower rate, studies up to April 2021 show that the HPL has led to significant reductions in SSB consumption, particularly among low-income groups and populations with high SSB intake. These findings suggest that the levy has been effective in improving health equity. The Healthy Living Alliance's (HEALA) released its fourth episode of the thought-provoking web series, Chew on This. The episode titled “Is the Sugar Industry Lying to Us?", critically examines the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugary beverages, introduced to reduce sugar consumption and improve public health. Joining us to educate us more about this series we're joined by Prof Sue Goldstein, a public health medicine specialist, and MD of the SAMRC/Wits Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science (PRICELESS SA).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Have you ever read a 'news report' that didn't sound quite right? Are you familiar with the term 'fake news? Some time ago, I came across an article discussing the years-long fight to get 'fat' out of our American diet. Years ago, scientists had supposedly proven that fat in our diets was a terrible problem and that if we eliminated fats from our foods, we would be thinner, healthier, and probably look better! Interestingly enough, researchers have recently begun to turn away from that perspective. Even as many have eliminated fats from their diets, our people have continued to gain weight and suffer more diet-related health problems. The article acknowledged these phenomena and discussed the efforts to get fat from our diets. The back story behind the idea that fat in our diets was the problem was initially suggested by those in the sugar industry. The executives of several companies that manufactured sugar- and sugar-related products were trying to draw away any negative attention that sugar may have attracted by those researching foods. These executives influenced the scientific organizations to blame Americans' health problems on the fats in Americans' high-fat diets. This led to decades of low-fat advertising and low-fat products in the American food culture. To put it bluntly, the idea that the fats in our diets were a significant problem for Americans was 'fake news!' The food researchers and Sugar Industry executives purposely falsified information. They misled the American people so that theirsugar-related products would continue to do well in the marketplace. Their plan worked, and for the last several decades, millions of Americans have been trying to lose weight and be healthy, cutting fat from their diets. Unfortunately, there was no real focus on caloric reductions, including calories from sugars, which meant that people cut fats from their diets and still gained weight. Instead of getting healthier, their health problems increased! This is the danger of 'fake news.' If you base your life upon that which is untrue, you always suffer in some way. Regardless of what area of life you're talking about, the truth is always best! The Apostle Paul never wrote about fats and sugars in your diets, to be sure. Still, he wrote that Christians needed to base their lives upon the truth, even when it was unpopular or painful. In one passage in the book of Romans, he wrote, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus. ., for we maintain that a ma is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also. . . ." Romans 3:23-24, 28-29. This passage is part of a long section where Paul taught the Roman Church that God was the One God, who loves and offers forgiveness to all. Jews were called to worship the One God through Jesus, and Gentiles (non-Jews) were also called to worship the One God through Jesus. Any other belief – that God loved one group more than another or that only certain people could be saved, was declared to be what we would today call "fake news." There was already a problem with 'fake news' in the Church, and Paul knew the only way to root it out was to teach the truth clearly and expose that which was false. Centuries later, there is still a problem with fake news in the Church! Fake news in the Church is any idea or teaching that limits what kind of people can be saved; it is any action or practice that distorts the clear message of Jesus; and it is any belief that asserts the spiritual superiority of one group or individual over another. But remember, the truth in the Church always unites God's people under the sign of the cross, making us all part of a larger, unified community. Let me encourage you to be aware of any fake news you might hear in the Church. Choose to believe the truth that is in Jesus, and nothing else! Today, I'm going to share five secrets that the sugar industry doesn't want you to know. 1. They hid the truth about the dangers of sugar They quietly paid researchers to cover up a study that connected eating sugar to increasing the risk of heart attacks, other cardiovascular events, and cancer. 2. They made sugar an essential ingredient in food An average person in the US consumes 26 teaspoons of sugar every day. 3. Sugar is subsidized in the United States Tax dollars are paid to farmers to produce sugar. 4. The bliss point This is the optimized amount of sugar to create a delicious effect, which causes a spike in endorphins. This practice trains the mind that to feel pleasure, you need to keep eating sugar. 5. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics establishes food policies This is a group of dietitians who are the most influential over food policy. Unfortunately, they have a close relationship with the ultra-processed food industry. Sugar is composed of fructose and glucose. Glucose is metabolized by all of your cells. But, fructose is only metabolized by the liver. When you consume high amounts of table sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, you're creating a toxic effect on the liver, similar to alcohol toxicity. When you cut sugar out of the diet, your body replaces it with ketones. Ketones are a super fuel for the body. Cutting out sugar and going on a low-carb diet is not only better for your health, but it will also help shift the market to a healthier one.

Sugar is ubiquitous. Our grocery stores are brimming with sugar-added products, both from the usual suspects like cereal, soda, and other sweet treats and from products marketed as “healthy” that can contain a whopping dose of the sweet stuff. Likely though, if you've been following my work for awhile, you already know this. But how did we get here? The new book, The World of Sugar: How the Sweet Stuff Transformed Our Politics, Health, and Environment over 2000 Years, seeks the answer. On this episode, my co-host, James Connolly is interviewing the author, Ulba Bosma. Ulbe is a Senior Research for the International Institute of Social History. His research centers on labor and labor relations viewed from a social, historical, and geographical lens. Ulbe's unique perspective brings to light how sugar production affected cultures worldwide through industrialization, labor migration, and human health. Shannon Penrod and Nancy Alspaugh- Jackson give a Wyart update and interview the makers of the documentary film, Beyond. #Autism #Beyond #Documentary BEYOND follows Tamara Mark, a once rising Broadway/Hollywood star, to a full-time single mother of two nonverbal autistic adults, Ian and Harry. She now fights for her dream to build a community for those alike to live better and safer. Filmmaker Thiago Dadalt and Autism Advocates Tamara Mark and Marc Olson will answer questions live – in studio. FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/beyond.filmdoc Instagram: www.instagram.com/beyond.doc Movie website: www.docbeyond.com Production: www.dellenmillerproductions.com Beyond Ranch Foundation: www.beyondranchfoundation.org Tamara was one of 8 chosen to star in the film that Mr. Poitier had searched the country for and had auditioned 7,500 people. This life altering opportunity, led her to moving to Los Angeles, where she continued to study and work as an actress in many TV shows, film, voice-over and commercials. The tragic and sudden death of Peggy Furey, her mentor and acting coach, shifted her perspective on her purpose in life. Tamara left show business for a time and sought deeply within to find what brought a deeper meaning to her life. After travels through South America and India, she returned to Los Angeles, where she met the man who became her husband and father of her two children. When Ian and Harry were diagnosed with autism, her focus became entirely them and a search to heal, help, and care for them. When the marriage fell apart, Tamara raised these two boys, now young men, entirely on her own. During the pandemic, she reconnected with a friend she had known in high school. Marc had moved to Australia over 40 years ago and after the passing of his wife, his kids convinced him to go on Facebook, where the two of them found one another. Over two years they video messaged until travel opened up again and he and Tamara finally got to meet physically. Their love story has proven to be the catalyst for all the beauty unfolding and the passion together to build a purposeful future for Ian and Harry and others like them. It is an epic tale of love against all odds. MARC OLSON is the Co-Founder, Treasurer, and serves on the Board of Directors for Beyond Ranch Foundation. Marc Olson is a dual citizen of both the United States and Australia. Marc has resided in Australia for the last 43 years of his life. He held many jobs in his early years in Australia, from sugar cane farm worker, fruit picker, island resort kitchenhand and barperson to abattoir worker in the cattle industry where he decided to return to university to study accounting. Upon completion of his studies Marc gained employment as an accountant in the Sugar Industry where he worked for 15 years holding senior accounting positions. Moving on to becoming the State Accountant for WIN Television media company for 11 years, the last 3 years also holding the position of State Head Office – Station Manager as well as the State Accounting function. The last 7 years of his working career he held the position of Chief Financial Officer for a civil construction group of companies. After the passing of his wife of 35 years marriage, urged by his children to reconnect to the world via Facebook (which he loathed), he reconnected with Tamara Mark, an old high school friend. It soon became apparent that Tamara had the love, strength, and resilience that held the future for him. After almost 2 years of old school dating via video messenger and a country locked down in COVID protocols where he wasn't even allowed to leave the country, they physically reunited in Pasadena, CA. Their loving union is now focused on a future for Tamara's sons Ian and Harry and the severe autistic communities across the world. Marc and Tamara have a strong vision for the future of this population that currently has no future for long term care solutions.

Sugar- 100% empty calories is about 50% fructose and is correlated ton liver disease, fatty liver, gallbladder disease, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, of course high blood sugar, cancer, dementia, lowered immunity, but also seemingly unrelated hormone issues, like PCOS and low Testosterone. I could go on and on but the science speaks for itself and it buries sugar 6 feet under. Yet we are addicted- thanks to the Food Industry and The Sugar Industry.
How the food industry responds to “health food faddists.”
