In Hawaii, it's hard to imagine any recent story bigger or deeper than water. The Lahaina wildfire that killed over 100 people and destroyed the entire town was fueled by uncontrolled dry grass on former sugar fields. West Maui was already the epicenter of the debate over who uses, controls, and profits from our precious, and often scarce, water supply. To become akamai on the issue, Hawaii News Now political and government reporter Daryl Huff sat down with Dr. Jonathan Likeke Scheuer, chair of the East Maui Regional Community Board (Water Authority) and former chair of the state Land Use Commission. Scheuer explained: How the sugar industry took control of stream water across the state. How Maui's water policy is related to the Lahaina wildfire disaster. Whether commercial development can coexist with stream restoration and stream-based agriculture. The state's messaging and actions on water policy. The South African government first proposed a 20% sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in 2016. However, after extensive consultations with the beverage and sugar industries, the levy was reduced to approximately 10%, coming into effect in April 2018. Despite this lower rate, studies up to April 2021 show that the HPL has led to significant reductions in SSB consumption, particularly among low-income groups and populations with high SSB intake. These findings suggest that the levy has been effective in improving health equity. The Healthy Living Alliance's (HEALA) released its fourth episode of the thought-provoking web series, Chew on This. The episode titled “Is the Sugar Industry Lying to Us?", critically examines the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugary beverages, introduced to reduce sugar consumption and improve public health. Joining us to educate us more about this series we're joined by Prof Sue Goldstein, a public health medicine specialist, and MD of the SAMRC/Wits Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science (PRICELESS SA).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As the globe collectively celebrates World Food Day today, we want to ponder on the effects of sugar on the body. Titled "Is the Sugar Industry Lying to Us?", the fourth episode of the Healthy Living Alliance's (HEALA) web series, Chew on This, is now available and in this new segment, they critically examine the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugary beverages, introduced to reduce sugar consumption and improve public health. The panel of experts explores whether the sugar industry has been truthful about its claims concerning the levy's impact on jobs and the economy, while urging viewers to consider the levy's health benefits, particularly for vulnerable communities affected by obesity and diabetes. Zukiswa Zimela, Communications Manager at HEALA joins us on the line now for more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Have you ever read a 'news report' that didn't sound quite right? Are you familiar with the term 'fake news? Some time ago, I came across an article discussing the years-long fight to get 'fat' out of our American diet. Years ago, scientists had supposedly proven that fat in our diets was a terrible problem and that if we eliminated fats from our foods, we would be thinner, healthier, and probably look better! Interestingly enough, researchers have recently begun to turn away from that perspective. Even as many have eliminated fats from their diets, our people have continued to gain weight and suffer more diet-related health problems. The article acknowledged these phenomena and discussed the efforts to get fat from our diets. The back story behind the idea that fat in our diets was the problem was initially suggested by those in the sugar industry. The executives of several companies that manufactured sugar- and sugar-related products were trying to draw away any negative attention that sugar may have attracted by those researching foods. These executives influenced the scientific organizations to blame Americans' health problems on the fats in Americans' high-fat diets. This led to decades of low-fat advertising and low-fat products in the American food culture. To put it bluntly, the idea that the fats in our diets were a significant problem for Americans was 'fake news!' The food researchers and Sugar Industry executives purposely falsified information. They misled the American people so that theirsugar-related products would continue to do well in the marketplace. Their plan worked, and for the last several decades, millions of Americans have been trying to lose weight and be healthy, cutting fat from their diets. Unfortunately, there was no real focus on caloric reductions, including calories from sugars, which meant that people cut fats from their diets and still gained weight. Instead of getting healthier, their health problems increased! This is the danger of 'fake news.' If you base your life upon that which is untrue, you always suffer in some way. Regardless of what area of life you're talking about, the truth is always best! The Apostle Paul never wrote about fats and sugars in your diets, to be sure. Still, he wrote that Christians needed to base their lives upon the truth, even when it was unpopular or painful. In one passage in the book of Romans, he wrote, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus. ., for we maintain that a ma is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also. . . ." Romans 3:23-24, 28-29. This passage is part of a long section where Paul taught the Roman Church that God was the One God, who loves and offers forgiveness to all. Jews were called to worship the One God through Jesus, and Gentiles (non-Jews) were also called to worship the One God through Jesus. Any other belief – that God loved one group more than another or that only certain people could be saved, was declared to be what we would today call "fake news." There was already a problem with 'fake news' in the Church, and Paul knew the only way to root it out was to teach the truth clearly and expose that which was false. Centuries later, there is still a problem with fake news in the Church! Fake news in the Church is any idea or teaching that limits what kind of people can be saved; it is any action or practice that distorts the clear message of Jesus; and it is any belief that asserts the spiritual superiority of one group or individual over another. But remember, the truth in the Church always unites God's people under the sign of the cross, making us all part of a larger, unified community. Let me encourage you to be aware of any fake news you might hear in the Church. Choose to believe the truth that is in Jesus, and nothing else! Today, I'm going to share five secrets that the sugar industry doesn't want you to know. 1. They hid the truth about the dangers of sugar They quietly paid researchers to cover up a study that connected eating sugar to increasing the risk of heart attacks, other cardiovascular events, and cancer. 2. They made sugar an essential ingredient in food An average person in the US consumes 26 teaspoons of sugar every day. 3. Sugar is subsidized in the United States Tax dollars are paid to farmers to produce sugar. 4. The bliss point This is the optimized amount of sugar to create a delicious effect, which causes a spike in endorphins. This practice trains the mind that to feel pleasure, you need to keep eating sugar. 5. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics establishes food policies This is a group of dietitians who are the most influential over food policy. Unfortunately, they have a close relationship with the ultra-processed food industry. Sugar is composed of fructose and glucose. Glucose is metabolized by all of your cells. But, fructose is only metabolized by the liver. When you consume high amounts of table sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, you're creating a toxic effect on the liver, similar to alcohol toxicity. When you cut sugar out of the diet, your body replaces it with ketones. Ketones are a super fuel for the body. Cutting out sugar and going on a low-carb diet is not only better for your health, but it will also help shift the market to a healthier one.

Sugar is ubiquitous. Our grocery stores are brimming with sugar-added products, both from the usual suspects like cereal, soda, and other sweet treats and from products marketed as “healthy” that can contain a whopping dose of the sweet stuff. Likely though, if you've been following my work for awhile, you already know this. But how did we get here? The new book, The World of Sugar: How the Sweet Stuff Transformed Our Politics, Health, and Environment over 2000 Years, seeks the answer. On this episode, my co-host, James Connolly is interviewing the author, Ulba Bosma. Ulbe is a Senior Research for the International Institute of Social History. His research centers on labor and labor relations viewed from a social, historical, and geographical lens. Ulbe's unique perspective brings to light how sugar production affected cultures worldwide through industrialization, labor migration, and human health. She now fights for her dream to build a community for those alike to live better and safer. FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/beyond.filmdoc Instagram: www.instagram.com/beyond.doc Movie website: www.docbeyond.com Production: www.dellenmillerproductions.com Beyond Ranch Foundation: www.beyondranchfoundation.org Tamara was one of 8 chosen to star in the film that Mr. Poitier had searched the country for and had auditioned 7,500 people. This life altering opportunity, led her to moving to Los Angeles, where she continued to study and work as an actress in many TV shows, film, voice-over and commercials. The tragic and sudden death of Peggy Furey, her mentor and acting coach, shifted her perspective on her purpose in life. Tamara left show business for a time and sought deeply within to find what brought a deeper meaning to her life. After travels through South America and India, she returned to Los Angeles, where she met the man who became her husband and father of her two children. When Ian and Harry were diagnosed with autism, her focus became entirely them and a search to heal, help, and care for them. When the marriage fell apart, Tamara raised these two boys, now young men, entirely on her own. During the pandemic, she reconnected with a friend she had known in high school. Marc had moved to Australia over 40 years ago and after the passing of his wife, his kids convinced him to go on Facebook, where the two of them found one another. Over two years they video messaged until travel opened up again and he and Tamara finally got to meet physically. Their love story has proven to be the catalyst for all the beauty unfolding and the passion together to build a purposeful future for Ian and Harry and others like them. It is an epic tale of love against all odds. MARC OLSON is the Co-Founder, Treasurer, and serves on the Board of Directors for Beyond Ranch Foundation. Marc Olson is a dual citizen of both the United States and Australia. Marc has resided in Australia for the last 43 years of his life. He held many jobs in his early years in Australia, from sugar cane farm worker, fruit picker, island resort kitchenhand and barperson to abattoir worker in the cattle industry where he decided to return to university to study accounting. Upon completion of his studies Marc gained employment as an accountant in the Sugar Industry where he worked for 15 years holding senior accounting positions. Moving on to becoming the State Accountant for WIN Television media company for 11 years, the last 3 years also holding the position of State Head Office – Station Manager as well as the State Accounting function. The last 7 years of his working career he held the position of Chief Financial Officer for a civil construction group of companies. After the passing of his wife of 35 years marriage, urged by his children to reconnect to the world via Facebook (which he loathed), he reconnected with Tamara Mark, an old high school friend. It soon became apparent that Tamara had the love, strength, and resilience that held the future for him. After almost 2 years of old school dating via video messenger and a country locked down in COVID protocols where he wasn't even allowed to leave the country, they physically reunited in Pasadena, CA. Their loving union is now focused on a future for Tamara's sons Ian and Harry and the severe autistic communities across the world. Marc and Tamara have a strong vision for the future of this population that currently has no future for long term care solutions.

Sugar- 100% empty calories is about 50% fructose and is correlated ton liver disease, fatty liver, gallbladder disease, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, of course high blood sugar, cancer, dementia, lowered immunity, but also seemingly unrelated hormone issues, like PCOS and low Testosterone. I could go on and on but the science speaks for itself and it buries sugar 6 feet under. Yet we are addicted- thanks to the Food Industry and The Sugar Industry.

If you think the Food Pyramid is a healthy diet guide, think again (also - you might wanna turn down the volume for the first few seconds of this one). Mike, Jon, and Tom discuss food, the thing Tom has been more wrong about than anything else in his life, food as poison, itchy boxer shorts, unusual thirst, hypoglycemia versus hyperglycemia, slightly elevated blood sugar level, Mountain Dew, Richard K Bernstein, enrolling in medical school at middle age, Wikipedia is a dangerous source of information, everything is an energy exchange, paleo and caveman diets, natural versus processed foods, essential proteins and fats, traditional diet of the Inuit, Weston A Price, dental cavities and general tooth decay, teething of children in non-modernized communities, apparently germs don't exist and 5G causes Covid-19, Sir Isaac Newton , Albert Einstein is a rank amateur, general quackery, some people must hate ducks, lobotomies were actually a thing, John Harvey Kellogg, eating cereal and sexually transmitted diseases, Ancel Keys, fats versus carbohydrates versus sugars versus proteins, the sugar industry and other corporate food lobbies, disposal income and diet and smoking, the food pyramid is based on industry lobby influence and not consumer health, ketosis is your natural state, most calories are burned just keeping your body going, resting metabolic energy requirements, 3500 kcal per lb of fat takes a lots of physical activity to burn off, you can take what Tom says as medical advice, don't trust large organizations, Fat Fiction documentary, genesis and development of the Food Pyramid, TV dinners, health guidelines for adults and children, cholesterol is not the problem, fuel cleaner for your blood, onions and garlic and alcohol, eating fat and drinking beer lowers your blood sugar level, following the food pyramid will make you gain weight, FDA fundamental conflict of interest between food industry and citizen health, eat fat, eat healthy, fast food calorie counts, and Jon is not close to being a health nut. https://www.patreon.com/ThreeEqualsFive https://threeequalsfive.buzzsprout.com https://open.spotify.com/show/7yxcbdSbd1e8w20ooLLmuj https://podcasts.apple.com/lk/podcast/three-equals-five/id1590436951 https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-three-equals-five-89552834 #Food #BigGovernment #CorporateLobbies #FoodPyramid #Fat #Carbohydrate #Diet #Diabetes #HeartDisease Fat Fiction - How the Food Pyramid was Created https://youtu.be/TUADs-CK7vI Richard K Bernstein - How he Fundamentally Changed the Practice of Medical http://www.diabetes-book.com/bernstein-life-with-diabetes A Tribute to Richard K Bernstein MD FACE FACN FCCWS https://www.diabetesincontrol.com/a-tribute-to-richard-k-bernstein-md-face-facn-fccws-on-his-83rd-birthday Wikipedia Co-Founder: I no longer trust the website I created https://youtu.be/l0P4Cf0UCwU Who was Weston A Price? https://paleoleap.com/the-work-of-the-weston-a-price-foundation Dr John Kellogg - Inventing Cereal and Some Other Stuff https://www.history.com/news/dr-john-kellogg-cereal-wellness-wacky-sanitarium-treatments Long-term Trends in Diabetes https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/statistics/slides/long_term_trends.pdf Ancel Keys https://mndaily.com/233704/news/ft-keys/ Records found in dusty basement undermine decades of dietary advice https://www.statnews.com/2016/04/12/unearthed-data-challenge-dietary-advice Sugar Industry and Coronary Heart Disease Research https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5099084 Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/ThreeEqualsFive)

This week shares of sugar-producing companies rallied as much as 10% in a single day and while many people have asked us to cover these stocks, we thought maybe we could start by giving a brief overview on the sector. So in today's episode, we talk about the dynamics of the sugar industry.
In this week's podcast, we discuss some of the many lies the sugary industry has told us over the years from an article titled, 50 Years Ago, Sugar Industry Quietly Paid Scientists To Point Blame At Fat This lie stemmed from research conducted in the 1960's by the Sugar Research Foundation. This group paid Harvard scientist to talk about the benefits of sugar and to blame dietary fat for diseases such as heart disease, even though, there was never any strong evidence to blame fat for heart disease. This group never disclosed any financial conflicts of interest, even though, it seems obvious that research paid for by the sugar industry would conclude that sugar isn't bad. To learn more about how the sugar industry lied to the American people, listen to this week's podcast. What the hell is going on with this dietary Fat conversation? Today's guest certainly believes he has the right angle on it which is that all the nonsense that was called out as being wrong (all the botched fat research from back in the 50s and 60s) is actually NOT wrong and therefore concludes, as you'll hear that saturated fat is as bad as the low fat movement made it out to be - catastrophically bad! I didn't pipe up on this episode as much as I expected after hearing it back during editing, but I really don't agree with this point of view and plan to organise another episode to really talk science on this topic.. maybe even time to organise my first on air debate between 2 experts.. The balance between the LDS Church’s operation of its non-profit and for-profit endeavors has always come with both benefits and repercussions. Censure of the City Creek building project reignited this divisive topic as critics contended that more funds should be directed toward humanitarian pursuits and less towards financial ones. It’s an ongoing discussion layered with complexities as the church decides how best to generate the funds necessary to fulfill the mission of the church. The example of the Utah–Idaho Sugar Company is a micro study in the costs and benefits of for-profit ventures. Historian Matthew C. Godfrey is an expert on the church’s involvement in the sugar industry. In this episode, he discusses with Laura Harris Hales some of the challenges that face the church when it becomes involved in business. The sugar business in Utah began in earnest in the late 1880s when there was interest on the part of some individuals to produce sugar from beets. Needing capital in order to finance the construction of a factory, they approached Wilford Woodruff and asked if the church could provide some funding. Wilford Woodruff was already interested in getting the church involved in more businesses. And as he thought more about getting the church involved in the sugar industry, he said he received a revelation that it was the Lord’s will that the church become involved in the sugar business. From that revelation, he met with the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and he instructed several of them, including Heber J. Grant and Joseph F. Smith, to go out among Utah businessmen and raise money for the sugar factory. The apostles raised the necessary funds, and in 1889 the Utah Sugar Company was formed. The church didn’t have a financial interest in the company, but simply boosters for it. But as the 1890s wore on and as the company got into some financial difficulties, Wilford Woodruff, again believing that God wanted this industry established, got the church involved financially in the industry. Woodruff’s interest in the business was two-fold: to provide the Saints with economic opportunities and allow the Saints to be self-sufficient in sugar. Woodruff and Joseph F. Smith both talked about the need to provide some labor opportunities for the Saints in the Great Basin. The labor could come as employees working in the factory to actually extract the sugar or as farmers growing the sugar beets for cash. The fact that Wilford Woodruff said it was the mind and will of God that the church become involved in the sugar industry set it apart from other business ventures. It carried with it a level of commitment and compelled the church to seek for outside funding after the panic of 1893 to keep it afloat. At that time, the Utah Sugar Company became tied to the eastern Sugar Trust, and the company ceased producing sugar only on a regional basis. Now, eastern businessmen were investing in something the church started because of a revelation. With outside investment, the Utah Sugar Company had to be very concerned about business practices so they could make a profit. Having received financial backing from the Sugar Trust, those involved in Utah Sugar expanded into other areas in Utah and into Idaho, leading to the formation in 1907 of the Utah–Idaho Sugar Company. Utah–Idaho leaders wanted the company to make money and tried to keep costs down and prices to consumers up. But beet growers, most of whom were Mormon, wanted as much as they could get for their beets. This was no longer the mutual cooperative economy characterized by Zion’s Cooperative Mercantile Institution; this was for-profit capitalism. That’s a huge transition from how the church had participated in businesses in the past. Thomas Alexander referred to this time period as “Mormonism in Transition.” Social, political, and economic transitions were all occurring as polygamy ended, Utah became a state, and the church became involved in more solely for-profit enterprise...

A newly discovered archive of documents reveal the sugar industry's efforts to shape the national research agenda away from the effects of sugar on tooth decay and push for programs to focus on alternatives to reducing consumption. We spoke to Cristin Kearns, a University of California, San Francisco postdoctoral scholar who discovered the papers, about her research, how the agenda of the National Institute of Dental Health became aligned with the sugar industry's, and how industry can subvert research agendas to protect their economic interests at the expense of public health.
In a May 9 preliminary decision, the U.S. International Trade Commission determined "there is a reasonable indication that a U.S. industry is materially injured by reason of imports of sugar from Mexico that are allegedly subsidized and sold in the United States at less than fair value." As a result, antidumping and countervailing duty investigations into the questions of domestic injury, dumping, and subsidization will proceed with final determinations expected in early 2015.If duties are imposed on imports of sugar from Mexico, the decision will mark the latest U.S. government intervention on behalf of domestic sugar producers to ensure higher-than-world-average sugar prices in the United States. This raises costs of production for sugar-using industries and discourages domestic value-added activity. What have been the real costs of U.S. sugar protection? How has it impacted consumers, industrial users, and trade relations? What mechanisms exist to prevent the U.S. trade laws from enabling one U.S. industry to impose injurious costs on another?
