This week we have not one, but two episodes for you!For this story, we travel back to December of 1908, when people in Russell and Adair counties in Kentucky were shaken after 12-year-old Mamie Womack failed to return home from school. Her disappearance that winter afternoon triggered a desperate search, as neighbors, family, and bloodhounds followed a trail through the woods that uncovered a horrible crime. As the hunt for answers widened, suspicion fell on Elmer Hill, a young man with ties to the Womack family, who also went missing. What followed was a multi-county manhunt involving posses, bloodhounds, and growing public outrage. Hill would eventually be captured after days on the run, but the case would not end in a courtroom. In this episode of Stories of Appalachia, Steve and Rod tell the story of Mamie Womack's disappearance and the chilling fate of the man thought to be responsible, another one of the Stories of Appalachia.

Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Ryan Weaver, and special guest Jay Brandstetter from the internet history podcast I'm From the Internet. We bring you the thrilling conclusion of our look at Jack Thompson's personal war against Rockstar and Take-Two and, subsequently, his legal career. This time, the publishers of Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, and Bully take the fight to Jack, preemptively suing him to keep him from blocking the release of Manhunt 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV. We also cover Jack's disbarment and reflect on his legacy as a crusader against violent video games. Topics discussed include: a Steven Seagal interlude, Thompson goes down fighting, some people don't care for naughty words, and the panic over video games passes Jack by, and how a bad lawyer helped secure video games as a creative medium. In 1965, the body of Roger Casement was returned to Ireland. No longer condemned to the grounds of Pentonville Prison, he would be buried in Dublin's Glasnevin Cemetery, where he is one of the first graves a visitor encounters today. There were political questions around Casement's body in the 1960s, and his final request was not honoured. Rory Carroll, author of the bestselling 'A Rebel and a Traitor: A Fugitive, the Manhunt and the Birth of the IRA' joins me to discuss Casement, life and afterlife.
Richard Speck and the 1966 Chicago nurse murders remain one of the most horrifying chapters in Chicago true crimehistory. In this Best of 2025 revisit, Terrifying & True returns to one of its most gripping and disturbing deep dives: the night eight young student nurses were terrorized and murdered inside their South Side townhouse, and the long shadow that crime cast over America. This episode follows the full arc of the case, from Speck's violent early life and downward spiral into crime, to the sweltering July night that ended in unimaginable brutality, to the frantic manhunt, nationally watched trial, and the disturbing revelations that surfaced long after his conviction. It's one of the most engrossing episodes we released in 2025, and absolutely one worth revisiting. What makes this story hit so hard is not just the scale of the crime, but the human terror inside it: a house full of young women trapped with a killer, one survivor forced to hide in silence while the horror unfolded around her, and a city left reeling by what newspapers called the crime of the century. This is one of the strongest and most unforgettable Terrifying & True episodes of the year, blending historical detail, emotional weight, and true crime suspense in a case that still shocks decades later.Inside this episode:The life and psychological decline of Richard Speck before the murdersThe 1966 Chicago nurse murders and the horrifying events inside the townhouseCorazon Amurao's survival and the eyewitness testimony that helped identify SpeckThe massive Chicago manhunt that led to his arrest days laterThe trial, conviction, and death sentence reversal that kept the case in the headlinesThe prison scandal and later confession tapes that revealed Speck's lack of remorse and deepened his infamyIf you're drawn to Chicago true crime, mass murder cases, historical crime stories, and deeply researched episodes that explore both the horror of the crime and its lasting impact, this is one of the most powerful episodes Terrifying & True has ever done. This Best of 2025 re-air is the perfect chance to revisit an episode that remains as haunting, enraging, and unforgettable now as it was on first listen. We're telling that story tonight.
The Prison Break, the Manhunt, the Inside Story In June 2015, two vicious convicted murderers broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, in New York's North Country, launching the most extensive manhunt in state history. Aided by prison employee Joyce Mitchell, double murderer Richard Matt and cop-killer David Sweat slipped out of their cells, followed a network of tunnels and pipes under the thirty-foot prison wall, and climbed out of a manhole to freedom. For three weeks, the residents of local communities were virtual prisoners in their own homes as law enforcement from across the nation swept the rural wilderness near the Canadian border. The manhunt made front-page headlines—as did the prison sex scandal involving both inmates and Joyce Mitchell—and culminated in a dramatic and bloody standoff. Now Charles A. Gardner—a lifelong resident of the community and a former correction officer who began his training at Clinton and ultimately oversaw the training of staff in twelve prisons, including Clinton—tells the whole story from an insider's point of view. From the lax ethics and sexual hunger that drove Joyce Mitchell to fraternize with Matt and Sweat, smuggle them tools, and offer to be their getaway driver, to the state budget cuts that paved the way for prison corruption, to the brave and tireless efforts to bring the escaped killers to justice, Dannemora is a gripping account of the circumstances that led to the bold breakout and the twenty-three-day search that culminated in one man dead, and one man back in custody—and lingering questions about those who set the deadly drama in motion.https://amzn.to/41KqkUbBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

1. High-Stakes Military Rescue Operation President Trump describes the extraordinary U.S. military rescue of two American airmen shot down inside Iranian territory during Operation Epic Fury. The mission involved dozens of aircraft, elite special forces, CIA-led deception tactics, and heavy enemy fire. Despite extreme risk, both airmen were successfully extracted, reinforcing the administration’s stance of “leave no American behind.” 2. Emphasis on U.S. Military Superiority Trump repeatedly highlights the unmatched power, technology, and capability of the U.S. military. He frames the operation as historic, near-impossible, and only achievable by U.S. forces. The rescue is used as proof that “peace through strength” is not rhetoric but a functioning doctrine. 3. Direct Ultimatum to Iran Trump issues a sharp warning that Iran has 24–48 hours to comply with U.S. demands. Demands include halting nuclear ambitions and reopening strategic shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. He states Iran could be “taken out in one night” if it refuses, while still claiming preference for avoiding war. 4. Claim of Internal Iranian Pressure The President asserts U.S. intelligence indicates internal dissatisfaction within Iran. He suggests civilians are watching closely and may desire change, implying leverage beyond military force. 5. The Critical Leak During the Mission A central focus of the presser is Trump’s accusation that classified information was leaked to the media mid-operation. The leak revealed the existence of a second downed pilot, which had been intentionally kept secret for his survival. 6. Consequences of the Leak Trump argues the leak: Alerted Iranian forces and civilians Led to a reward being offered for capturing the pilot Made the rescue far more dangerous for both the stranded airman and U.S. forces He labels the leaker “sick” and claims the leak endangered lives. 7. Threat of Legal Action Against Media Trump states the administration will aggressively pursue the leaker. He warns the media outlet involved may be compelled to reveal its source or face jail time, citing national security. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. She received a "whole life sentence" for her crimes, being only the fifth woman in the history of the country to receive such a punishment. So WHAT ON EARTH drove her to commit these crimes? And what explains her extremely bizarre behavior once she was arrested? We're....not really sure. But we're gonna scream our way through this one, and we'd love for you to join us.Find and watch "Manhunt: Joanne Dennehy" on Amazon PrimeWE'RE ON YOUTUBE - Want to view the episodes and not just listen?
