Welcome to the True Grit Podcast. I'm your host McKenna Mertens. Join me each week where I bring on guests and share personal stories on how you can start living your life with guts, resilience, integrity and tenacity.
When you can let something be itself without having any kind of influence on you, that is true acceptance. I just finished “Stop Doing That Shit by Gary Bishop and he has such an interesting approach to how we should be living our lives and how to get out of our own bullshit self-sabotaging ways. This episode focuses on my top two takeaways from the book! Learning how to accept our darker parts instead of trying to get rid of them or overcome them. Learning how to live in a future mindset versus living in the past. By the end of this episode I hope you realize that living for the future is a hell of a lot better than living for the past.
I see you over there having to put on a fake smile sometimes because you feel stuck with where you're at. You're not crazy or alone, I promise. So often we forget or don't realize how much our environment impacts us. You probably have no clue what a positive environment even looks or should feel like! Or maybe you don't know if someone's comments are negative because you're so used to them. And maybe you just need a few reminders that can be added to your toolbox. If one of these resonates with you, you're going to love today's episode! Link is in the bio! Let me know what you think by sharing the episode on your story and tagging me! I'm so proud of you for digging into that GRIT and kicking some ass!
Today's episode is a throwback to episode #46 Oreos and Bubble Baths! This topic has come up a lot this week and this episode was such fire that I figured you needed to hear it again! Self-Care isn't ordering the pizza and watching Netflix...it's usually the ugliest things you have to do, like forcing yourself to wake up when your alarm goes off, or cutting a long-term friend out of your life, or getting a second job so you can pay off those student loans. I know this is a punch in the gut but you already know that I am so freaking proud of you. Today is the day to start shifting that stigma of self-care and actually taking action towards doing that HARD shit! You've already got the GRIT, so go kick some ass.
In today's episode I share how you need to STOP PLAYING THE VICTIM. And how that mentality is going to ensure you have a really shitty life. Because let's face it, you are smart enough, capable enough, and can achieve anything you put your mind to. You’re not a victim and life isn’t happening to you. You are the orchestrator of your life. Things happen for you and they create amazing opportunities. You just have to get out of your own bullshit victim mentality to accomplish them!
How often do you see people sharing their habits but not actually giving a process that helps you master it. Where you can actually implement it and stick with it? I've got just the process for you! Recognize it (become aware) Duplicate it (implement it) Master it This process is honestly easy to fall in love with, especially if you actually stick to it. So freaking do it! Call yourself out, create the plan, practice it consistently, and take control of your own freaking life. Because no one else is going to do it for you.
Babe, I know you need a reminder of why you need to smile today. It is a great freaking day to have a great day! Here are four reminders that will make you smile every single day. Oh and you know I had to call you out on your bullshit of bitching and complaining instead of putting habits in place to get better. The choice is ultimately up to you. If you don’t want to take the time and put in the work to either make these habits work for you or even just follow them for a few days to get used to them, then you’re letting your bitch voice win. And you have way to much GRIT for that!
How do you know when it's time to move on, whether it be work, relationships, friends - especially when you're friends aren't on the same journey as you? Here are three ways I believe help you recognize that it’s time to move on. Whether that be a friendship, relationship, job, town, environment. If you wake up every morning exhausted and it’s difficult to get out of bed. You can’t seem to get enough sleep. When you start to feel that slight resentment or hatred for someone creeping in You’re complaining about everything...and I mean everything How do we know how to fix them and when? You need the guts to recognize that you’re doing these things. Your resilience will help you call yourself out on the bullshit excuses you’re bitch voice is telling you. Your integrity will help you accept personal responsibility that you put yourself in this situation to begin with. Realizing that your choices led you here. Lastly, your tenacity will give you the persistent determination to keep an open mind and willingness to make changes.
I was sitting here today thinking about the podcast and thinking about topics that I could cover and it dawned on me that I haven’t actually explained what GRIT means and really why I believe that is the foundational values you need in order to cultivate the lifestyle, habits, and mindset shifts you feel so deeply about. Guts - Recognizing that feeling in the pit of your stomach that something isn't right and having the balls to change. Resilience - Your mental toughness to get back up after you fail. Integrity - Relying on your values to do the right thing in all circumstances. Tenacity - Your persistent determination to keep going.
PSA – If you don’t like being called out on your own bullshit, hearing harsh realities or knowing that you might be to blame for your failures, this isn’t the episode for you. As humans we spend so much time trying to figure out why something isn’t working right for us, why we haven’t achieved a goal, or why someone didn’t do something the way we thought they should. We have become conditioned to say things like “but if” or “and that” or “if it weren’t for them” or “it’s harder than people realize”. The realization is that those are just excuses created by your bitch voice to justify you not leveling up. To justify you not getting better or achieving your goals you’ve created. To literally justify WHY YOU FAILED!
A short PEP TALK to light you up! I want you to leave this episode feeling like you have the ability to be the most positive person anyone around you interacts with today!
Lydia Amrandi is a full-time Psychology student at McGill University, runs an online business & is a podcaster! On her podcast, called “MINDset Enthusiast”, she talks about personal development, mindset & positive psychology. It is kind of a “no-fluff beginner's guide to self-help”, as she realized over the years that, although there are already lots of GREAT resources on these topics, she couldn’t 100% relate with most of them. She felt like the people who created these resources were many steps ahead of her, as most of them already had successful careers, travelled the world, wrote amazing books, etc. Thus, she decided to start it now & document her journey as a testimony of what’s possible for her generation! Go check her out! I know you will get some amazing tips & tricks from her! Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lydiamrandi/?hl=fr-ca MINDset Enthusiast Podcast Apple Spotify Youtube
You know those posts people keep making on Instagram about what to leave behind in 2020? Well I usually just scroll past those because as much as making new years resolutions and “ditching” the baggage in the previous year sounds amazing, I feel that we should be doing this throughout the year instead of putting it off. I mean 80 % of people fail at their new years resolutions. That’s a crap ton! But I’ve noticed that the people who make small changes instead of quitting things cold turkey or just doing something super big are the ones who succeed. Otherwise the second you struggle you give up right away. (been there done that, trust me)... So I present you with 7 things to ditch now and forever! Staying stuck and settling Comparison Chasing approval from outsiders Forgetting to count your blessings Happiness Thieves Overextending yourself when you should be resting Yucking peoples yums
It feels like this year more than ever I keep telling myself and hearing from others about how stressed everyone is. This is stressing you out and that is stressing you out. Sooooo, in light of that I wanted to do a quick episode giving you a few ideas of what to do when you’re feeling stressed. Now I know that I have done a few episodes on stress before but this episode is a little different! I have broken down stress relief ideas based on your five senses! Helping you get out of your head and feel more grounded using your body!
How many times does something not go right or the way you want and you react by snapping or yelling. Maybe you react in a way you know is wrong. You’ve done the personal development work and you know what triggers you AND you know how you should respond. But the moment it happens you forget all your tools on how to respond differently. Let’s face it, as much as I preach to you guys that awareness is key, sometimes it’s just not enough. In this episode you will find a step by step process on how to create new behaviors and thoughts! Getting off the hamster wheel is simple to do but takes consistency!
If you’ve been listening to me for awhile you already know that I believe that awareness is key and perspective is EVERYTHING! Takeaways Mood shifts don’t happen drastically, they take a minute and gradually you’ll start feeling yourself become a little lighter. That heaviness you feel in your shoulders or the ache in your neck or that slight headache you have, will start to fade. I promise. Life is rigged in your freaking favor, what you look for is what you’ll see. The spiral is a real thing, so what can you do to drag yourself out of the shit pile?
How many times have you failed when trying to make a change in your life? Whether it be with your attitude, nutrition, lifestyle, mindset. Every single time you start something you relapse. You go back to being negative, you eat all the sweets, you start going out and partying instead of sticking to the change you wanted. Why? Everyone wants the secret to how to make big changes quickly. Well you wanna know the secret? Better tune in!
How many times a day do you think or say that you are stressed? Someone asks you how you are and you respond with “just so stressed out”. How many times a day do you catch yourself saying internally “God I wish I wasn’t so stressed out!” Trust me I am right there with you babe. Stress is your body’s reaction to any change that needs adjustment or a response. Which means your body will react physically (that headache, or back ache you get), emotionally (the sadness or frustration you might be feeling), and mentally (maybe you lash out at someone, cry, or treat yourself or give up). So how can we learn how to perceive stress differently? You'll just have to tune in to find out! xoxo
How often do you say to yourself things like: Why can’t I save money? Why do I keep living paycheck to paycheck and feel like I’m getting nowhere? Why does my significant other not understand why I’m upset? Why can’t I just have the motivation to go to the gym? Why do my friendships always fall apart? Why do I hate how I look in the mirror? All of these things are so damn hard…. But you know what’s harder? The alternative.
"I'm not motivated" "How do you stay motivated" If I had a penny for every time I heard this....I'd be rich! I Know I have done an episode on these statements before but I still keep hearing it. And if I’m being honest, it still runs through my own head all the time. Sooo I figured we both needed a refresher and we all need that little kick in the pants sometimes. Besides we all know that awareness is key. Sooo after doing some research I have put together a list of four things to remember and use when you’re “not feeling motivated". 1. Set realistic expectations 2. Mental Stamina/Mental Toughness vs GRIT 3. Become obsessed 4. What's the alternative? If you love this episode I'd love if you shared it on your IG stories! This helps us get this message out there and you never know who really needs to hear this today!
We all have the inner critic that tells us we aren't good enough. We aren't pretty enough, smart enough, capable enough. That's your inner mean girl and it's time we shut her up! Here are two questions to ask yourself every single day! #1. What do I need to do TODAY to win the day and feel like im making progress? #2. What do I need to do to feel like a full, complete person today?
Have you ever felt that old you creeping in HARD. The version of yourself you worked so hard to change. All those old habits working their way back into your life. Because I was right there with you. People mistake personal development as something easy. But the truth is, it’s a constant battle. It’s making sure your mindset is right, it’s checking in on yourself and having honest conversations with yourself. It’s calling yourself out on the bullshit your mind is telling you. Whether that was three years ago, three months ago, or three days ago…we’ve all had that moment in the mirror when we realized somethings gotta change. Maybe today is your Day 1, but you start to feel discouraged when you see how far someone else is…Trust me I have been there. But the reality is, they had their day 1 too. They’ve compared themselves to others. They’ve cried over not feeling capable enough. They’ve felt all the confidence drain out of them because they messed something up. They’ve experienced the same frustrations and emotions as you and me.
Sooooo I found another quote and it hit a little too close to home. I know you’re probably thinking that I find quotes and then share them with you all the time but seriously when something strikes too close to home – that’s when I know you need to hear it! Because we’re in this together. We’re learning and growing together. And if I don’t share with you feelings that something stirs up inside of me what am I even doing here? Today’s quote was “When you squeeze an orange you get orange juice because that’s what’s inside. The very same principle is true about you. When someone squeezes you – puts pressure on you – what comes out is what’s inside. And if you don’t like what’s inside you can change it by changing your thoughts.” Chilllllllls! Holy balls! Girl….the same goes for when unexpected things happen or life throws you another shit pile you have to get through. When the pressure hits do you take it in stride and with ease? Or do you lash out, take it out on others, get mad?

In reality it really doesn't matter if I believe in you. That's the cold hard truth. I'm not with you when you're having a full on meltdown on the floor of your shower because you don't feel like you're capable enough. What it really comes down to is how much YOU believe in YOURSELF!
We spend so much of our life comparing our Chapter 1 to someone else's Chapter 10. Did you ever stop to think that maybe you're just on a different path than them? Life is freaking rigged in your favor babe! It's like a domino affect...one thing happens, it might not be what you expect, but that sets off all the other things to fall into place. You are exactly where you're supposed to be, stop doubting yourself. Your belief in yourself is much stronger than that! Trust me!

Today we dig into your ego! What is it? How does it work? You ego can be placed into two different categories. A fragile ego or a relaxed ego. I share a few examples of how you can start becoming aware of the lies your ego tells you and how it can change your pattern of thinking.
Self-Care isn’t all rainbows and butterflies...it's usually the ugliest things you have to do, like pushing yourself past that mile mark while on a run when you just want to quit, or cutting a long-term friend of your life, or getting a second job so you can actually have money in your savings account. What a freaking punch in the gut that is. But you already know I am so freaking proud of you. Today is the day to start shifting that stigma of self-care and actually taking action towards doing it correctly. You can do this babe! I’ll talk to you next week!
