Prerequisites for riding for Former: – Must be able to hang on trips – Must be willing to sleep on the floor of a warehouse That's about it. Before you volunteer your soul, there's also the unspoken requirement that Dane Reynolds and Craig Anderson respect your surfing. Yep. It's alright. Sit back down. There's a seat here, still warm, right next to me. Since this weekly chat began, we've been trying to pry the story of Former out of Dane. He usually gives us a few scraps before laughing about the various ways the business nearly imploded. This week he's joined by longtime friend and business partner, Craig Anderson, a relationship that stretches back to the Modern Collective days, before the birth of their long-running creative alliance at Quiksilver. The pair unpack the many occasions Former almost failed, did fail, or found itself staring directly at the abyss. At one point the company was hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and operating out of Dane's garage. Despite a career spent brushing up against extinction, Former is still here today, more air in the lungs now, beating harder than it ever has. They also discuss the future of the brand, the makings of their new film, Defect, signing Elijah Berle following his online spat with Austyn Gillette, and the lasting impact of the late Dylan Rieder on the brand, the business, and the people around it. Episode 19. One of my favourites, for whatever that's worth. Thanks to our sponsors, Rationale, Yucca Fins, Patagonia, and SlowTide, for making StabMic possible. Also, we had a slight audio syncing issue with Dane and Dooma's mics this week. Hopefully it's not too offensive to the ears. Apologies all round.
Our guest this week is a well-known industry sales executive who climbed the ranks from SURFSHOP, to sales rep to Senior Vice President and General Manager at Quiksilver. But like so many of us industry guys, his journey started at Wavelengths Shop in Clairemont, where he spent seven years as both a team rider and employee.A large part of his career was spent at Hurley, where he dedicated 15 years to the brand. He started managing territory sales in San Diego for six years before being promoted to VP of Icon Doors, then SVP of Global Merchandising for eight years, and eventually reaching the role of SVP of Global Commerce. In 2023, he joined Florence Marine X as SVP of Sales, reuniting with many former Hurley colleagues. After a brief stop at O'Neill, he landed with one of the most iconic legacy brands in action sports over seeing Quiksilver and Billabong, where he currently serves as SVP and GM.We're pumped to hear about his journey through the surf industry, the lessons learned along the way, and what it takes to lead some of the biggest brands in action sports. Please welcome to the shop, Mr. Ryan “MUNGA” Mangan.
Our guest this week is an entrepreneur with a creative mind and one of the biggest industry powerhouses in action sports and lifestyle brands. With more than 25 years of executive leadership experience, his résumé includes roles as VP of Operations at Paul Frank, President and Global General Manager of RVCA, SVP of Marketing and Product Development at Igloo, and Global President of Quiksilver. After helping lead Quiksilver through the Boardriders era, he parted ways following the acquisition by ABG and was offered the massive responsibility of overseeing and managing the entire action sports portfolio under Authentic Brands Group—a role that would have put him at the center of some of the most iconic brands in our industry. But before he even started the job, he passed on the opportunity.Never one to stand still, he made the jump into the golf world, where he was tasked with building a team from the ground up and launching one of the most anticipated brands in sports alongside the GOAT himself, Tiger Woods. That brand is Sunday Red, and its debut sent shockwaves throughout the golf industry. We're pumped to welcome back for a much-needed Take 2 conversation with our friend, Brad "BRIZZ” Blankinship.
Welcome to another episode of the Travel With Meaning Podcast. This episode was recorded live in front of an audience at The Kinn in Venice Beach as part of their weekly Startup Café series, featuring conversations with founders, entrepreneurs, and innovators. Our guest is Keith Eshelman, Founder and CEO of Parks Project, the purpose-driven outdoor lifestyle and apparel brand that has given back nearly $3 million to support our national parks. Prior to launching Parks Project, Keith built his career with brands including TOMS, Quiksilver, and Puma. As a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and adventurer, Keith recognized a growing need to support and protect our public lands after a meaningful trip with his daughter—a story he also shares in Parks Project's 10-Year Anniversary video. Click here to watch. In this conversation, Keith shares his founder story behind Parks Project, which organically began in a small apartment just across the street from where our episode was recorded. We discuss restoration projects, and conservation efforts that Parks Project and its community have supported over the years. Keith also shares some powerful lessons for entrepreneurs and dreamers alike, including the importance of confidence, taking risks, and not accepting "no" as the final answer. We hear about several of the meaningful travel experiences that have shaped his perspective and influenced both his personal journey and professional path. We also dive into the launch of Parks Project Trips, something Keith has envisioned for quite some time. He shares why now feels like the right moment to bring people together through intimate, shared experiences in nature and create deeper connections with both the outdoors and one another. The French entrepreneur explained how a spontaneous idea turned into a game-changing brand over 25 years ago. From early success in core shops to rapid growth, he reflects on community, product innovation and the evolution of the action sports market. He also looks back on his journey within Quiksilver, his role in relaunching Gotcha with bold moves like the “Surf Is Dead” campaign, and his time leading DC Shoes in Europe. Back at the helm of PULLIN, Emmanuel discusses the brand's expansion, challenges, and reinvention — from global collaborations to a renewed, more premium positioning. Born in 1954, hailing from Victoria, Australia, Maurice Cole started surfing at age 12. He got good fast, and won Victorian State Titles in 1973 and 1976. However, he got busted for possession of hash oil, which, after trial, led to a little over two years in jail. That obviously stalled his competitive ascent, but also proved to be formative. He got out in 1978 and surfed vigorously around the Bells region, where he lived. He got third in the National Titles in 1979. That qualified him for the 1980 World Surfing Championships, held in the southwest of France. He traveled there, finaled, and fell in love with the place and its abundance of untapped, A-grade beachbreak. Maurice was also a prolific shaper. He had a good life at home—R&Ding his designs at mysto spots and pushing the envelope in big waves with his sparring partner, Wayne Lynch. But France beckoned. In 1982, he and his wife, Anne, moved to Hossegor. Maurice shaped under his own label, helped establish Quiksilver and Rip Curl, and played a key role in the foundation of the European surf industry, notably the Surfrider Foundation. But perhaps most memorably to Maurice himself, and to readers of the early '80s surf mags, he got terrifically barreled. A few years later Maurice came up with the reverse vee design. Tom Curren picked one up and surfed incredibly well on it, which led to a period where seemingly every top pro had ordered a reverse vee from Maurice. In the mid-1990s, Maurice moved to the Margaret River area of Western Australia. He continued shaping boards for the world's best, among them Taj Burrow. In the late '90s, Maurice and cohorts Ross Clarke-Jones and Brendan "Margo" Margieson brought tow-surfing to the West Oz scene. A raconteur, an environmentalist, an outspoken critic of what he refers to as "vanilla," Maurice is the quintessential designer/surfer, who's still devoted to the craft of shaping and test piloting surfboards. In this episode of Soundings, Maurice talks with Jamie Brisick about his biggest shaping influences, learning from the Hawaiians, intrinsic joy, outgrowing introversion, his time in prison, falling in love with Hossegor, developing the reverse vee, and working with Tom Curren. Dario Phillips, co-founder of Slowtide, built the surf industry's most recognizable beach towel brands by betting on a single product category and surrounding it with authentic art, meaningful collaborations, and a clear brand identity. In this conversation, Dario traces the full founder arc — from marketing director at Quiksilver to rolling the dice on 800 towels in a Venice Beach garage. He talks about the realities of licensing deals, co-founding remotely across two islands, and why a decade of building has taught him to trust his team's instincts over outside hires. He also shares how Slowtide is expanding beyond towels into outerwear and new product categories, while staying grounded in the values that started it all.A few of the topics from the conversation:Leaving Corporate Board Sports to Co-Found SlowtideThe Case for Category-Specific BrandsLicensing as a Growth StrategyCo-Founding Across Time Zones and IslandsFounder Confidence Over Outside HiresSustainable Growth and Giving BackLinks:SlowtideSlowtide's Custom ProductsSlowtide x New Balance Connect with Christian on LinkedInThe KORE Podcast is a production of the Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Enterprise. Joel Parkinson is a Gold Coast surfing icon; a CT standout with 11 CT wins, 3 Hawaiian Triple Crowns, 4 World Runner-Ups, the 2012 World Champion, and is globally-renowned as one of the most stylish and consistent competitors in modern surfing history. In this year's first episode of The Lineup, he reflects on the journey that defined his career. Parko opens with the grassroots of Australian surfing, from Snapper Rocks Boardriders' 60+ year history to why club culture remains the backbone of the sport. He rewinds the tape back to when he was a young 11-year-old grom signing with Billabong for discounted boardshorts–and three decades later, still part of the team, a partnership that endured the ups and downs of brand-athlete relationships in surfing. He reveals how close he came to jumping ship to Rip Curl as a teenager, the jaw-dropping offer from Quiksilver in his early 20s, and why loyalty ultimately won. Parko reflects on sharing a team with legends like Mark Occhilupo, Taj Burrow, and Luke Egan, and what it was like witnessing Andy Irons at his peak during the Blue Horizon era. He also shares the unforgettable story of Andy claiming the top room at the Billabong house in Hawaii—rankings be damned. The conversation shifts to life on Tour: traveling with his wife and kids long before it was common, the emotional toll of chasing a World Title while raising a family, and why his wife “deserves more of a World Title” than he does. Parko opens up about nearly quitting in 2011 after a brutal New York event, how letting go reshaped his mindset, and the constant mental weight surfers carry when fighting for a Top 5. He dives into his rivalry and lifelong friendship with Mick Fanning and Dean Morrison, addresses the “style” narrative that followed him throughout his career, and gets deep into board talk—from early DHD days to his long partnership with JS Industries, including the mythical board that went 17 heats undefeated. In this episode of Pinch My Salt, we break down the Kelly Slater drama, the Channel Islands vs Firewire controversy, and the latest conversation around Stab in the Dark. Was Kelly Slater wrong to leave Channel Islands Surfboards? Did he “betray” Al Merrick and Britt Merrick, or was it a smart business move after everything he gave to surfing? We get into the history of Kelly Slater and Channel Islands, why so many surfers are calling him a snake, and why we think the story is way more complicated. This is a full Kelly Slater podcast discussion with surf industry talk, board brand politics, sponsorship money, Firewire surfboards, Quiksilver, and why legends don't always get paid what they're worth. Bim : on a enfin reçu Michel Bourez.
Our guest this week is another true industry powerhouse with over 30 years of experience. He got schooled in business of retail at one of the most Iconic and Core Shops around “Surfside Sports” under the leadership and guidance from Professor “Duke Edukas”. He went on to spending nearly half his career at Quiksilver, as he climbed the ranks from wetsuit sales rep, to in-house sales and managing the customer service department, to Director of Sales for wetsuits and accessories, and ultimately to VP of Sales. After leaving Quiksilver in 2013, he joined rival brand Billabong as VP of Sales, where he spent the next nine years continuing to strengthen wholesale/retail relationships. In an ironic twist, Quiksilver and Billabong eventually came together under the Boardriders umbrella, giving him a unique and highly effective perspective, having helped lead both brands. During that time, he further expanded his role, adding VP of Latin America and ECommerce to his already impressive portfolio. We're stoked to hear about his journey from warehouse grom to VP for 2 of the biggest surf brands and his current role as General Manager at Salty Crew. Please welcome to the show, Mr. Jason “SHELTY” Shelton.

Episode #26 (English). Guest: Gabe Davies, surf activist, former pro surfer and former ocean marketing manager at Patagonia Gabe Davies is an icon of European surfing and one of the most committed individuals in the field when it comes to both big waves and environmental causes, which he's always stood up for. In the early 90's, Gabe was one of the people who put Great-Britain on the global surfing map. Through sessions at home or trips across the globe, the four-time national champion was all over the European and international surfing media at that time. Eventually, the British surfer yearned for something else. In addition to producing successful documentaries, Gabe transferred professionally thanks to his long-time sponsor, Quiksilver. His career took him through a variety of roles, from athlete management and public relations to content creation as well as environmental activism, a natural evolution for him given he was one of the initial ambassadors for the British NGO « Surfers Against Sewage ». A few years down the road, his commitment to these causes naturally led him to Patagonia. Today, twelve years later, as Ocean Marketing Manager EMEA, he represents the brand whose stance and message resonates with his own values as well as those of many consumers. For Inside EuroSIMA, Gabe took the time to discuss his journey, his career as well as his views on the role and responsibilities of the Action sports industry, including evolutions, challenges and opportunities. The conversation echoes with an unwavering passion for waves and the ocean and overflows with inspirational positivity. Thanks for the experience, Gabe. Enjoy the ride. Recorded at Olatu Leku (Anglet) on October 1st 2025. (The episode has been recorded in 2025 October 1st. Since that day, Gabe left Patagonia. We decided though to keep the full discussion as it went. Enjoy!)

Gabriel Medina just walked away from Rip Curl after 16 years—and the surf world is officially changing. In this episode of Pinch My Salt, Sterling Spencer and Cousin Ryan break down the biggest surfing news and what it means for pro surfing contracts, surf sponsorships, and the future of the surf industry. Are legacy surf brands like Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver and Volcom losing their grip? Why are top surfers chasing new deals, luxury brands, and short-term “collabs” instead of lifelong sponsor relationships? Born in Hawaii in 1961, Danny Kwock rode his first waves at Waikiki when he was ten. Surfing took a brief hiatus when he moved with his family to the San Fernando Valley, but picked up soon thereafter when they moved to Newport Beach, right at Wedge, which is where Kwock made his mark, charging big waves and becoming one of the brightest, flashiest surfers of the Echo Beach scene, wearing pink boardshorts and riding polka dot twin-fins when most Californians followed a far more understated ethos. Kwock was featured on the cover of Surfer and Surfing magazines in the early 1980s, did a short stint on the world pro tour, but soon became a forerunner to what we now know of as a professional "freesurfer." But he also saw the virtues of the long game. When the opportunity arose to work in a behind-the-scenes role at Quiksilver, he jumped at it, and he hit his straps as the marketing director, a position he held from the early 1980s up until the mid-aughts. (It should be noted that Kwock's relationship with Quiksilver began a few years earlier, when he and his Echo Beach buddy Preston Murray got caught stealing boardshorts from the warehouse.) Kwock's early team captain/marketing position started in what were wild days. The industry grew fast, and he played an instrumental role in that growth. In this episode of Soundings, Kwock talks with Jamie Brisick about meeting Duke Kahanamoku, surfing Wedge, the Echo Beach era, fashion, negotiating contracts, Andy Warhol, the wild days of the surf industry, and signing Kelly Slater to Quiksilver. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).

Born in California in 1948, Jeff Hakman's father introduced him to surfing at age eight. Four years later, the family moved to Oahu, and the year after that, at the age of 13, Hakman surfed Waimea Bay for the first time. In 1965, he was invited to the inaugural Duke Kahanamoku Invitational, held at Sunset Beach. Hakman was 17. He won. In the ensuing years, on his Dick Brewer-shaped boards, Hakman transitioned seamlessly from longboards to shortboards—and went on a winning streak. He won the Duke again in '70 and '71; won the first Pipe Masters in '71; won the Hang Ten Pro and Gunston 500 in '72; and the Hang Ten again in '73. Bookending his stellar competitive run, he won the Bells Beach event in 1976. After winning that event, Hakman sat down with the owners of a fledgling Aussie brand called Quiksilver and convinced them to make him the US licensee. Today, Hakman lives in Bidart, France, where he sits down with Jamie Brisick for this episode of Soundings to talk about surfboard design, growing up on the North Shore, the birth of the surf industry, humility, and the challenge of returning to an everyday existence after living the extraordinary.
