Today (and all this week, lucky us!) we’re joined by a fantastic podcast producer, writer, and improviser: the mighty Sean Howard! We enlist Sean’s help first for a whale of a tale (or at least a Bass Pro Shop of a tale)  and turn it into a fantastic alternate universe story fending off boredom while being trapped in one place. Plus: The Florida Man VHS Collection, handsome eyebrows guy, fishy tooth aches, a very gory children’s book, and Lebron James as a moral compass. Episode Reviewed: “Market to Market” , Season 1, Episode 5 Alba Salix is a witch who runs a small hospital called the House of Healing (when she's not tending to the kingdom's royal family). She's assisted by her troublesome apprentice, Magnus, and her absent-minded herbalist, a fairy named Holly. Show-runner: Eli McIlveen Released in: 2014 Genre: Fantasy, Comedy, Medical Reviewers: Maggie Allen, Max Baskin, Scooter Mann, Thomas Sixten Tell us about how your show started? I'd been writing a series about aliens living in Niagara Falls, but it was clear that I was in over my head on both the writing and production side. So I brainstormed ideas for a show that would be more episodic, and easier to produce, and came up with "fairy-tale hospital show".. It turned out to be exactly as complicated as the abandoned Niagara project. Special Guests: David Allen, Maggie Allen, Max Baskin, and Thomas Sixten.

It’s my birthday! Well, it’s my birthday week. And since everyone has to do what I say for the rest of the week, we’re going to take a step away from the usual topics we cover on Defender Radio. Don’t worry – I have an awesome interview with Robert Lennox, whose work on a predator removal study is discussed all the way from his current location in French Polynesia. But that’s next week, because this week it’s my birthday! As some of you may know I’m a bit of a geek. I love playing video games, table top games, and role-playing games. I also enjoy comedy audio dramas, like old fashioned radio plays, and improv. I’m very fortunate that two of my very favourite people in the world, Sean Howard and Eli McIlveen have created a fantasy comedy podcast I love: Alba Salix Royal Physician. And when they said they wanted to do a Dungeons and Dragons-type game in that universe, using improv and incredible friends and performers Marisa King and Carter Siddall, which would then be published as a podcast, I jumped at the chance. Literally. Sean may still have a bruise. The End of Time and Other Bothers was born and episode six released just last week. On the weekend, I sat down with Sean, Eli, Marisa, and Carter and we talked about the game, how a decision to be empathetic to animals and others in our world transformed the story, and why we end up laughing and laughing every time we play together. As an added bonus, the next two episodes in your Defender Radio podcast feed are the first two episodes of The End of Times and Other Bothers! I’ll tell you more about how to listen to that show after our interview. If you want to listen to the first two episodes of The End of Time and Other Bothers just click ‘next’ in your podcast feed! You can also visit otherbothers.com to learn more about episodes, the cast, and how you can get access to behind the scenes footage, outtakes, and more. There was some pretty big news in the podcasting world last week as Libsyn (via their own podcast The Feed) announced that they were partnering with music streaming giants Spotify. By the sounds of it, podcasts will be available on the service by the summer of 2015, which means that you could soon have your own audio drama listed on there, alongside their estimated 70 million users.Elsewhere, we’re chatting about DAWs. Digital Audio Workstations. Those awkwardly named, but essential pieces of software we use to put our shows together. Which one do you use? Have you ever switched from one to another, and why?And if you listened to episode 45, you’ll have heard part one of the Sonic Society‘s Jack Ward talking about what makes an audio story. Well you can hear part two in this very episode. Where does your own show fit into Jack’s Octahedron? You’ll find a transcription of this segment at the bottom of the page, and clips heard were from One by One, The Woman in the Basement, Biological Clock, and Escape from New York.Other shows mentioned on the show were The Once & Future Nerd, Alba Salix Royal Physician, Hidden Harbor Mysteries, The Table Round, and the Hadron Gospel Hour. Finally, we’re backing Neil from Twilight Audio Theatre to reach his Kickstarter goal of $650. He’d like to use it to pay his talent, and he’s an all round nice guy, can you lend a hand by making a small contribution? Oh and check out his podcast The Geeking too, there’s some great audio drama related content on there.
