Now that The Dark Tower is out of the way, it's time to dive into perhaps author Stephen King's most well regarded book of stories -or novellas- Different Seasons. But before we get to Apt Pupil and Stand By Me, we review the adaptation of the first story in the volume, a little film called The Shawshank Redemption. With Rob Reiner (eventually) giving first time feature director Frank Darabont the chance to adapt the story (called Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption in the book), the film came out…and hit with a thud. That is, until that year's Oscar nominations and Ted Turner's network TNT got into the act. Suddenly, Shawshank was being played multiple times a year, exposing the film to dads everywhere, and eventually becoming the number one rated film on IMDB. Now, The Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast puts the Morgan Freeman/Tim Robbins film to the test! Will everyone, including noted King pessimist Adam, agree with the IMDB score? Find out by downloading the podcast below!

After a few months away from his crazy imagination, it's time for the Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast to return to the world of Stephen King. And what a doozy to start this leg of adaptations, as in 2017 screenwriter Alivia Goldman and producer Ron Howard brought King's seven plus Dark Tower book series to the screen! Widely criticized as being one of the worst adaptations ever put to screen, the movie nonetheless possesses both Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in the two main roles. So what is the film criticized? And do Garrett, Adam, and Matt agree?? Listen in as the guys dissect a huge set of behind the scenes circumstances which had everyone from JJ Abrams to Ron Howard himself in the film's director's chair at one point or another. So how the hell did Nikolaj Arcel get the gig?? And is there a future for this series? So much to get to. So check out this 90 plus minute review of The Dark Tower and be sure to come back as the guys will dissect the movies adapted from King's Different Seasons collection, and even throw a few surprises in here and there!

A little more chat as the last of the starkblast fades. In this bonus Palaver episode, Nat and I stick around to dissect Chris's disproportionate love for The Wind Through the Keyhole. We talk about what, if any conclusions can be drawn from this book, and then we get onto King's intersections with Lovecraft and Tolkien – and some deep cut Dark Tower references elsewhere in the canon. You know how sometimes while reviewing Joe Hill's father and his adaptations we say we wonder when he will run out of inanimate things that are evil? For example, a linen folding machine shows there is no limit to how vast Stephen King's imagination can take him. However, we'll get back to him soon. Now, we are reviewing a movie that was spawned much the same way King came up with The Mangler. Hill phoned Scott Derrickson and asked him, ‘what would happen if The Grabber called Finn from hell?' The rest, as they say, is history. Join the Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast as we finally get to the sequel to the first surprise hit from Blumhouse Pictures. Is this really a new Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors? Can Ethan Hawker be our new Freddy? What about Black Phone 2's new settings and characters??? All is answered in the below podcast. Next week, a review of dad Steve's Dark Tower and its adaptation starring Matthew McConaughey. What can possibly go wrong with that one???

Whilst the wind and world howls outside, we can all hunker indoors for the latest Dark Tower Deep Dive into King's 2012 novel-of-stories, The Wind Through the Keyhole. To some, this could be an inessential pitstop, a mere nostalgic coda, written long after the climax of the main saga. To others it's a testament to Stephen King's raw storytelling chops, which shed a little more purpling light on Roland's failing, fading world. You'll have to listen to find out where we each stand. But I promise there will be talk of story structure, and Billy Bumblers, and certain Randall Flagg. And you'll also hear how Chris Panatier has been trolling kind old uncle Stevie on social media. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Exorcist, Mortal Kombat II) returns to The Kingcast to talk about... not Stephen King. Well, not directly, anyway. The topic up for discussion is Joe Hill's 2025 epic horror tome King Sorrow which contains many familial references and those don't just include his famous father. The story centers a group of college friends who uncover the ability to summon a dark force to combat their enemies, but like most dark forces this protection comes at a price.Hill tells this story over multiple decades and litters the narrative with nods to many King titles, from The Dead Zone to The Dark Tower. We discuss the book without spoilers for the first half of the conversation and dig into some of the more spoilery stuff in the back. Don't worry, make it very clear when we're transitioning to spoiler territory.Make sure to catch Mortal Kombat II written by our guest Jeremy Slater in theaters this weekend!

This week, I'm sharing another of my favorite movies - Carol Reed's classic noir drama set on the streets of postwar Vienna The Third Man. Orson Welles makes one of his most memorable screen appearances as the charming rogue Harry Lime, and Joseph Cotten is Holly Martins, Lime's friend who struggles to face the truth about his pal's criminal nature. We'll hear the two stars in Suspense shows - Welles in "The Dark Tower" (originally aired on CBS on May 4, 1944) and Cotten in "Fly By Night" (originally aired on CBS on September 28, 1950). Then, Cotten recreates his film role in a Lux Radio Theatre presentation (originally aired on CBS on April 9, 1951), and finally Welles stars again as Lime in an episode of the radio series The Lives of Harry Lime - "Clay Pigeon."
Sister G and John find themselves back on the path of the Dark Tower again. This time, Roland finds himself stranded on a desert, injured and sick: the last gunslinger is going to need help if he's going to reach the Tower and Roland is going to find that help from some of the least likely people possible; a heroin addict and a woman plagued by having two different personalities. John and G dive into this intriguing, yet imperfect entry into King's magnum opus. Sit back, crack a cold one and enjoy.
Three hosts, thirty bands, and a lifetime of influence. Nat and I stick around in the shadowed recesses of Black House for another half hour, to discuss all the things that Chris got right and wrong – and to make some entirely unfounded claims of our own. It's overflowing with spoilers for the whole Dark Tower series, so don't listen if you're a newbie. We start to ask who is the Crimson King? Would Roland and Jack have gotten along? And we get very grumpy about certain wolves in a certain town further down the road. Enjoy. Time to whet our appetites for the Dark Tower again – this time with an extra serving of ass cheek! After three months away, we're picking up with travellin' Jack Sawyer after we left him in The Talisman. We find him in a sleepy Wisconsin town, where the dimension-hopping, child-eating Fisherman is plying his awful trade. Yep… it's time for Black House. The book in which King's universes collide. Nat, Chris and I argue – about where we see the spirit of King and Peter Straub in this story, about the believability of characters and the RIGHT amount to mourn a fallen hero. But we also agree about the beauty of theprose, the sublime depiction of the deepest horrors, and the sheer joy of one of the Dark Tower's nastiest villains. It's as much fun as you can have with a book about so many dead kids. We had so much fun revisiting Mid-World for this episode – it's the first series that brought us together as book nerds twenty years ago, and it's absolutely just as good as the first day we read it. So thankful it helped tie our friendship together, and laid the foundation for meeting all the rest of you Hugonauts all these years later! The Dark Tower defies (or bridges) genres, with elements of sci-fi, fantasy, western, horror, and more, all rolled into one legendary package. And Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger, is an incredible main character, and we'll never forget the rest of the Ka-Tet either. And the ending – we won't spoil it here, but man do we like thinking about this ending (it's one of the most polarizing in all of literature). You may be picking up on the fact that we kinda like these books. After our loose, freeform chat about the high strangeness of The Talisman, Nat stuck around to Palaver a little more behind Chris' innocent back. In this spoiler-filled 35 minutes (do not listen if you haven't finished The Dark Tower) we get into some firmer connections between King's magical worlds, we look at the order of books to come, weigh our saddest deaths in King stories…and even after all these hours we're forced to ask, “what the f*ck is the Talisman anyway? We're on the road again with our Dark Tower journey, running through adjacent worlds, lighting out for the Territories. Our latest side-quest takes us to The Talisman, the 1984 epic dark fantasy, co-authored by Stephen King and Peter Straub. It's a wild, hallucinatory ride, that contains my favourite King character of them all! Nat, Chris and I talk about that dude, as well as discussing where Jack Sawyer ranks in the league table of King's childhood heroes. But mostly we try to pin down the connections between this mad story, and Roland's great quest. Do we succeed? Do we just make up all manner of wishful thinking nonsense? You decide. For those sensitive listeners out there, consider this fair warning: when our guest Mallory O'Meara (Girly Drinks, The Lady from the Black Lagoon) pops up on The Kingcast, things tend to get a little raunchy and this episode is no exception. She may be a James Beard award winning author, but she also hosts a podcast called Reading Smut.Mallory returns to the show to finally dive into some Dark Tower waters as the topic turns to Stephen King's novella The Little Sisters of Eluria, which takes place not too long before the first novel in the Dark Tower series, The Gunslinger. What does Pixar's Cars have to do with this story? What about a surprisingly extended conversation about what other bodily fluids can sustain a vampire? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out!

On this week's episode, the guys dive deep into the much-anticipated Season 5 of Stranger Things, a show that has captivated audiences with its blend of supernatural intrigue and nostalgic 1980s references. Joe, who is still savoring the suspense with two episodes left to watch, is filled with excitement and curiosity about how the series will conclude. Meanwhile, Cody has already completed the entire season and finds himself walking a tightrope of enthusiasm and restraint as he tries to discuss the plot developments without giving away any crucial spoilers that could ruin the experience for Joe. They engage in a lively discussion about their favorite characters, plot twists, and the emotional arcs that have defined the series over its run. The conversation flows naturally as they reminisce about previous seasons, the character growth they've witnessed, and the various themes that have emerged throughout the show's narrative. To add a personal touch to the episode, Joe shares his recent experience of upgrading his reading habits with a Kindle Scribe. He explains how this new device has transformed his Kindle experience, allowing him not only to read eBooks but also to take notes and make annotations directly on the screen. Joe describes the features that have impressed him the most, such as the high-resolution display that mimics the feel of reading a physical book and the convenience of having a digital notebook combined with his reading library. He elaborates on how this upgrade has enhanced his engagement with the material he reads, making it easier to retain information and reflect on his thoughts as he goes along. As the episode draws to a close, Cody shifts the focus to some exciting news that has recently emerged regarding Mike Flanagan, the acclaimed director known for his work in the horror genre. He discusses Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's epic series, The Dark Tower, a project that has been highly anticipated by fans of the novels for years. Cody shares details about Flanagan's vision for the series, his previous successes in adapting literary works for television and film, and the potential challenges he may face in bringing such a complex narrative to life. The guys express their hopes and expectations for this adaptation, considering the rich world-building and character development that King is known for. They wrap up the episode with their thoughts on what they hope to see in both Stranger Things and The Dark Tower, leaving listeners with plenty to ponder until the next installment.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy

It is time to return to Mid-World in this final Kingcast episode of 2025 as indie horror star Graham Skipper (Re-Animator: The Musical, Almost Human, Beyond the Gates) joins Breznican and Vespe to discuss the fourth book in Stephen King's Dark Tower series: Wizard and Glass. We break down the plot, underline how it weirdly mirrors the plot that George Lucas would later use for The Phantom Menace, and take a deep dive into how this book really plays to King's strength at mixing intricate character work and unbelievable world-building.
After a summer of diversion and detour, we're back with the main Ka-Tet for Christmas. What better time for a tale of heartbreak, lost love, and cabin-bound masturbation. Yes, we're covering Wizard & Glass. Some would call this the high point of the Dark Tower series (for me, it's certainly up there) – and it gives us chance to talk in depth about how Roland became the man is he, and how love made us the men we are! Yeah… if you're ready for 2+ hours of middle-aged male nostalgia and dick jokes, this is the episode for you. Thankfully, it also offers literary analysis, Stephen King lore, and the greatest love of all, between a witch and her snake. Enjoy. In the finale of IT: Welcome to Derry, the guys dig into how unexpectedly emotional the ending turned out to be, from the weight of the opening scene to the full scope of Pennywise's plan. They break down the build-up to the final showdown, the adults' search for the ceremonial dagger, and how the series gradually shifted from pure horror into something more action-driven without losing its edge. The conversation also explores Pennywise as a character, including connections to The Dark Tower, and how the rising stakes and character arcs gave the finale real impact. As the dust settles on the final confrontation, the guys talk about what the ending sets up, where the story could go next, and why the show ultimately left a lasting impression.Looking back at the series as a whole, they reflect on how it grew beyond nostalgia, deepened emotionally, and found its footing, especially in the final episodes. What started as a familiar Stephen King adaptation became something richer and more confident, leaving them genuinely excited for future seasons and possible spin-offs. Peter Hall and Paul Gandersman, the writer/directors behind the upcoming genre flick MAN FINDS TAPE, join your intrepid Kingcast hosts to discuss one of Stephen King's underappreciated and as yet unadapted books: Joyland. Conversation jumps between their film, their deep cut Stephen King origin stories, some Dark Tower nerdiness, and why Joyland plays so well into King's strengths as an author. We even fancast our adaptation and do a damn good job at it, if we don't say so ourselves.
