After years and years and YEARS of development The Dark Tower finally made it to the big screen. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely Not! The story considered by some to be Stephen King's magnum opus ended up being a rushed, confusing adaptation that didn't please critics or fans of the source material. What went wrong? Let's talk about it!

The Ka-tet picks up exactly where we left off: on the beaches of Midworld, with Roland Deschain. (If none of that makes any sense to you, go listen to episode one of the Dark Tower Deep Dive immediately) Nat Cassidy, Chris Panatier and I gather for a long, philosophical, expletive-littered conversation about Book 2: The Drawing of the Three. We get further into the character of Roland and his quest, and spend some time with the gaggle of oddballs he meets along his scenic tour of the coast. The seafood is particularly tasty! It's good to be talking Tower again. Enjoy. Welcome back to the Constant reader Podcast, and thanks for bearing with us during our long hiatus. We have gathered up quite a few of our favorite repeat guests for 2025 though, so i am sure you will forgive us. We have lined up Kim C from the year of underrated Stephen King podcast with another step towards the Dark Tower. The gentlemen from King Con will be giving a report on how their convention on Stephen King, the first of its type, went back in October, and what you might expect from them in the future. Plus Andy Stanton will be back to help me sort out the End of the World As We Know It, the upcoming short story collection based in the world of King's The Stand. Plus we have some new guests, including some big names I can't reveal just yet. Today's guest is one those old friends, James Michels. James was on the show a couple of years ago to talk about The Shawshank Redemption, his own work in the prison industry, and his career as crime writer. We discussed a series of short stories, Life's Dark Corners, that i urge you to seek out. Today however, he is here to discuss The Melody of Shattered Glass, an ambitious epic novel that depicts the fates of the Oro crime family, one of the last bastions of a mafia that is struggling to identify exactly what it is, and what it stands for in the 21st century. But first, James wanted to talk about Stand by Me, Rob Reiner's adaptation of King's novella The Body. It features an incredible cast, a killer soundtrack, a sharp script and has meant a lot of things to a lot of people.I refer to his new book as The Melody of Shattered Glass, when it is, in fact The Melody of Shattered Gold. A thousand apologies to James for misnaming this book, which has an incredible ending and unforgettable characters.....

In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, hosts Meaghan and Arthur welcome listeners to the first episode for March, humorously recalling Arthur's previous oversight of selecting a monthly theme. They introduce March's new focus: villains in literature. This represents a fresh topic compared to their usual monthly themes, particularly diverging from their frequent discussions on science fiction. The hosts also humorously recount distractions from their cats during recording sessions, illustrating how their pets' mischief often interrupts their recording process.Current ReadsThe hosts share their current reading selections. Arthur is reading Transmutation Transience by Darkly Lem, a sci-fi space opera involving political intrigue and assassin thriller elements. Darkly Lem is revealed as a collective pseudonym for five different authors, which Arthur finds intriguing.Meaghan highlights several recent reads;Freda McFadden's thriller The Boyfriend: with its quick, engaging style. She also mentions finishing Sandra Trelekowska's The Ends of Things, appreciating its psychological, character-driven mystery reminiscent of shows like White Lotus. And finally Rachel Harrison's feminist-leaning horror novel So Thirsty, continuing Harrison's tradition of supernatural and feminist-themed narratives. Both hosts inform listeners that reviews for Transmutation Transience and The Ends of Things will soon be available on their website, in the books review section.Defining a Great VillainMeaghan and Arthur then transition into discussing what defines a memorable and impactful villain. They agree that relatability and clear motivations, even if morally questionable, are essential. Meaghan emphasizes the importance of villains whose actions, although extreme, remain understandable in terms of personal motives. Arthur adds that beyond relatability, effective villains require nuanced ideologies and a challenging presence for protagonists, ensuring they are neither easy to overcome nor forgettable. They discuss how overly simplistic, purely evil villains fail to leave lasting impressions. Villains who offer complexity, realism, and genuine emotions stand out and make readers think long after finishing the story. Meaghan suggests these types of villains are far more engaging because they often reflect or comment on realistic human experiences and moral complexities.Iconic Villains in LiteratureThe hosts share examples of memorable villains that encapsulate these qualities. Meaghan first mentions classic examples like Iago from Shakespeare's Othello, who is driven by envy and manipulates events tragically. Arthur cites Randall Flagg from Stephen King's works (The Stand and The Dark Tower series) as a representation of chaotic evil - a character embodying pure chaos, who is both captivating and memorable despite lacking relatability. They also mention Hannibal Lecter, who is frightening precisely because of his sophisticated intelligence and charm juxtaposed against his horrific acts, including cannibalism. Count Dracula is similarly highlighted as iconic, feared yet alluring, effectively symbolizing humanity's fear of the unknown.Meaghan recalls notable villains from children's literature, including Miss Trunchbull from Matilda and the White Witch from The Chronicles of Narnia. Although simpler than adult villains, these characters effectively communicate clear moral lessons to young readers, offering memorable examples of villainy through cruelty or manipulation.Nuanced Villains and Modern LiteratureThe hosts discuss how modern literature is shifting towards portraying villains with greater complexity and nuance, reflecting the complicated world readers now live in. Meaghan argues this change arises from the recognition that society is multifaceted, influenced by the widespread access to information and diverse perspectives. Readers no longer want simplistic moral distinctions but rather prefer villains who mirror the complexity of real life, including morally ambiguous decisions and behaviors. They note the rise of unreliable narrators complicates readers' perceptions of villains and protagonists alike. Megan cites Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl as a prime example of an unreliable narrator drastically affecting perceptions of villainy, where a mid-novel twist completely shifts the narrative understanding.Arthur further supports this idea by mentioning American Psycho, where protagonist Patrick Bateman's narrative unreliability leaves readers uncertain of their feelings towards the character. They agree that such characters engage readers by challenging them to think critically and question what defines true villainy.Wrapping up, Meaghan and Arthur express excitement for further exploration of villains throughout the month, promising future discussions on morally gray characters and various villain types. They conclude by inviting listeners to continue following their deep dive into literary villains and other book reviews on their website, FullyBooked.ca.

Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. Unfortunately, Troy and Brad must say goodbye to the McConaughthon as our month dedicated to the one and only Matthew McConaughey comes to an end. In this week's episode, the guys discuss a film that was meant to launch a multi-media extravaganza. However, its lackluster box office performance and critical reception prevented it from getting off the ground. The gang examines The Dark Tower, which is loosely based on Stephen King's novel series of the same name. While the movie offers a simplified take on the books, does it motivate viewers to dive into the series? How many Stephen King Easter eggs can one film contain? Can Idris Elba rescue this aimless journey? Tune in to find out! The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel and stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Claudia Kim, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee, and Jackie Earle Haley. Head over to the Not A Bomb Tee Public store and check them out. Special thanks to Ted Blair for the amazing designs! We're committed to hearing your feedback and suggestions. Richard Isanove has colored so many big projects over the years, it's dizzying. He started out as an animation student, first in Paris, then in California. While on the West Coast, he was hired by Brian Haberlin as Top Cow's staff colorist and eventual art director. From there, it was on to Marvel, where he brought his exacting eye to big titles like Daredevil: Father, Wolverine: Origin, Marvel 1602, and the Stephen King adaptation, The Dark Tower. Along the way, Richard's done his share of illustrating and painting, primarily in later issues of The Dark Tower. He also wrote and drew Savage Wolverine: Wrath. Now, he's back with his old pal Joe Quesada, coloring the lead book Disciple for Joe's new Amazing Comics imprint. You can follow Richard on Facebook and Instagram @richard.isanove. ____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. “The man in black fled across the desert, and the podcaster followed…” Welcome to the start of what is sure to be an epic journey. Step by step, over more than a dozen episodes, Talking Scared will be following the beam all the way to the Dark Tower – that mad edifice at the heart of Stephen King's opus. Maybe it's the heart of every story ever told… time will tell. Unlike Roland Deschain, I don't go alone. I'm joined by author and fellow King-nut, Nat Cassidy (Mary, Nestlings, When the Wolf Comes Home) and absolute newbie, Chris Panatier (The Phlebotomist, The Redemption of Morgan Bright) and in this first ever episode we tussle with the tricky, dusty, thorny opening that is Book One: The Gunslinger. What follows dives deep into the book, but is 100% spoiler free about anything beyond it. So if you've only read The Gunslinger, you're good to go. I hope you enjoy our wanderings. I hope you tinct. I hope you darkle. Other books mentioned: On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft (2000), by Stephen King It (1986), by Stephen King The Jerusalem Man (1988), by David Gemmell The Book of the New Sun (series, 1980-1987), by Gene Wolfe Support Talking Scared on Patreon Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. In the immortal words of legendary author Stephen King " The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed. The desert was the apotheosis of all deserts, huge, standing to the sky for what looked like eternity in all directions." The Dark Tower novel series written by Stephen King was originally published in 1982 with a world set in a Western with elements of the dark supernatural fantasy. The story follows the adventures of Roland Deschain, son of Steven of the House of Eld as The Gunslinger purses his quest to reach the Dark Tower, the center of the universes and his vengeance upon The Man In Black. Regarded as Stephen Kings magnum opus, this series was adapted into the comic book format published by Marvel Comics in 2007 by the incredible comic book team of Robin Furth, scripts by Peter David, and art by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove. During this podcast we will discuss the history of the series, adaptations of Dark Tower, the first arc of this story in the graphic novel collections and so much more.

On this week's episode, the guys kick things off by diving into a lively discussion about Joe's recent completion of the thrilling adventure game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This cinematic experience has left Joe buzzing with excitement, as he shares his thoughts on the game's intricate plot, stunning visuals, and the nostalgic elements that are a hallmark of the Indiana Jones franchise. Following this, Cody chimes in with his own cinematic journey, recounting his decision to rewatch the critically acclaimed science fiction film Interstellar. This leads to a fascinating conversation about the varying quality of content available on AppleTV compared to other streaming platforms, as they analyze the differences in production values, storytelling techniques, and overall viewer engagement that each platform offers. As the conversation unfolds, Joe drops a surprising piece of news on Cody: Cillian Murphy, known for his captivating performances, will not be reprising his role in the highly anticipated first installment of the new 28 Years Later movie trilogy. This revelation sparks a spirited debate about the implications of casting decisions in film franchises and how they can impact audience expectations and the overall narrative arc. The guys then pivot to an intriguing topic that has been on the minds of many film enthusiasts: the conspicuous absence of news regarding a new James Bond movie since MGM's acquisition by Amazon. They explore the potential reasons behind this silence, considering the complexities of studio politics, the impact of the pandemic on film production schedules, and the shifting landscape of cinematic storytelling in a post-pandemic world. In an unexpected twist, Cody leads Joe down an exciting new path that delves into the expansive universe of The Dark Tower series, which has captivated readers for decades. This discussion seamlessly transitions into a conversation about Stephen King's collaboration with Peter Straub on the novel Black House. They dissect the themes, characters, and the intricate connections to the broader mythology that King has crafted throughout his works. To wrap up the episode on a thought-provoking note, Cody shares insights about another of Stephen King's gripping novels, The Long Walk. He elaborates on the novel's dystopian themes, its exploration of human endurance, and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. This closing discussion leaves listeners with much to ponder about the nature of storytelling and the profound impact of King's literary contributions.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy
Chapter 13 - Many Meetings ‘There are many powers in the world, for good or for evil. Some are greater than I am. Against some I have not yet been measured. But my time is coming. The Morgul-lord and his Black Riders have come forth. War is preparing!'Q1 - What is Gandalf talking about?‘I suppose not,' said Frodo. ‘But so far my only thought has been to get here; and I hope I shan't have to go any further. It is very pleasant just to rest. I have had a month of exile and adventure, and I find that has been as much as I want.'Caught between fire and water, and seeing an Elf-lord revealed in his wrath, they were dismayed, and their horses were stricken with madness. ‘Who made the flood?' asked Frodo. ‘Elrond commanded it,' answered Gandalf. ‘The river of this valley is under his power, and it will rise in anger when he has great need to bar the Ford. As soon as the captain of the Ringwraiths rode into the water the flood was released. If I may say so, I added a few touches of my own: you may not have noticed, but some of the waves took the form of great white horses with shining white riders; and there were many rolling and grinding boulders. For a moment I was afraid that we had let loose too fierce a wrath, and the flood would get out of hand and wash you all away. There is great vigour in the waters that come down from the snows of the Misty Mountains.'‘Hush!' said Gandalf from the shadows at the back of the porch. ‘Evil things do not come into this valley; but all the same we should not name them. The Lord of the Ring is not Frodo, but the master of the Dark Tower of Mordor, whose power is again stretching out over the world. We are sitting in a fortress. Outside it is getting dark.' ‘Gandalf has been saying many cheerful things like that,' said Pippin. ‘He thinks I need keeping in order. But it seems impossible, somehow, to feel gloomy or depressed in this place. I feel I could sing, if I knew the right song for the occasion.'Q2 - Is Gandalf a killjoy? So it was that Frodo saw her whom few mortals had yet seen; Arwen, daughter of Elrond, in whom it was said that the likeness of Lu´thien had come on earth again; and she was called Undo´miel, for she was the Evenstar of her people.Q3 - I don't know what any of this means, but Tolkien knows how to make a character introduction.Frodo learned that Grimbeorn the Old, son of Beorn, was now the lord of many sturdy men, and to their land between the Mountains and Mirkwood neither orc nor wolf dared to go.Q4 - This guy sounds amazing.Bombur was now so fat that he could not move himself from his couch to his chair at table, and it took six young dwarves to lift him.Glo´in looked at Frodo and smiled. ‘You were very fond of Bilbo were you not?' he asked. ‘Yes,' answered Frodo. ‘I would rather see him than all the towers and palaces in the world.'Bilbo put out his hand. But Frodo quickly drew back the Ring. To his distress and amazement he found that he was no longer looking at Bilbo; a shadow seemed to have fallen between them, and through it he found himself eyeing a little wrinkled creature with a hungry face and bony groping hands. He felt a desire to strike him.Q5 - What does the ring actually do? This was terrifying.Q6 - How do Bilbo and Strider know each other?‘But often I must put mirth aside. Elladan and Elrohir have returned out of the Wild unlooked-for, and they had tidings that I wished to hear at once.'Q7 - What is going on here? They spoke together, and then suddenly it seemed to Frodo that Arwen turned towards him, and the light of her eyes fell on him from afar and pierced his heart. He stood still enchanted, while the sweet syllables of the Elvish song fell like clear jewels of blended word and melody.Q8 - Anyone else get all hot and bothered after this scene?Good night, Frodo! Bless me, but it has been good to see you again! There are no folk like hobbits after all for a real good talk. I am getting very old, and I began to wonder if I should live to see your chapters of our story. Q9 - This chapter hooked me.Chapter 14 - The Council of Elrond‘In that dream I thought the eastern sky grew dark and there was a growing thunder, but in the West a pale light lingered, and out of it I heard a voice, remote but clear, crying: Seek for the Sword that was broken: In Imladris it dwells; There shall be counsels taken Stronger than Morgul-spells. There shall be shown a token That Doom is near at hand, For Isildur's Bane shall waken, And the Halfling forth shall stand.Q1 - What do you think of the Council?Ash nazg durbatuluˆk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluˆk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.' The change in the wizard's voice was astounding. Suddenly it became menacing, powerful, harsh as stone. A shadow seemed to pass over the high sun, and the porch for a moment grew dark. All trembled, and the Elves stopped their ears. ‘Never before has any voice dared to utter words of that tongue in Imladris, Gandalf the Grey,' said Elrond, as the shadow passed and the company breathed once more. ‘And let us hope that none will ever speak it here again,' answered Gandalf. ‘Nonetheless I do not ask your pardon, Master Elrond. For if that tongue is not soon to be heard in every corner of the West, then let all put doubt aside that this thing is indeed what the Wise have declared: the treasure of the Enemy, fraught with all his malice; and in it lies a great part of his strength of old. Out of the Black Years come the words that the Smiths of Eregion heard, and knew that they had been betrayed: One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them.Q2 - What do you think this moment is really about? What does this phrase mean?He could work much mischief still, if he were free. And I do not doubt that he was allowed to leave Mordor on some evil errand.'Q3 - What do you think Gollum's purpose is?‘Not through lack of watchfulness,' said Legolas; ‘but perhaps through over-kindliness. And we fear that the prisoner had aid from others, and that more is known of our doings than we could wish. We guarded this creature day and night, at Gandalf's bidding, much though we wearied of the task. But Gandalf bade us hope still for his cure, and we had not the heart to keep him ever in dungeons under the earth, where he would fall back into his old black thoughts.'Q4 - Do you think Gollum could be made well?‘Very well, very well, Master Elrond!' said Bilbo suddenly. ‘Say no more! It is plain enough what you are pointing at. Bilbo the silly hobbit started this affair, and Bilbo had better finish it, or himself. I was very comfortable here, and getting on with my book. If you want to know, I am just writing an ending for it. I had thought of putting: and he lived happily ever afterwards to the end of his days. It is a good ending, and none the worse for having been used before. Now I shall have to alter that: it does not look like coming true; and anyway there will evidently have to be several more chapters, if I live to write them. It is a frightful nuisance. When ought I to start?' Boromir looked in surprise at Bilbo, but the laughter died on his lips when he saw that all the others regarded the old hobbit with grave respect. Only Glo´in smiled, but his smile came from old memories.Q5 - What do you think of Bilbo here?No one answered. The noon-bell rang. Still no one spoke. Frodo glanced at all the faces, but they were not turned to him. All the Council sat with downcast eyes, as if in deep thought. A great dread fell on him, as if he was awaiting the pronouncement of some doom that he had long foreseen and vainly hoped might after all never be spoken. An overwhelming longing to rest and remain at peace by Bilbo's side in Rivendell filled all his heart. At last with an effort he spoke, and wondered to hear his own words, as if some other will was using his small voice. ‘I will take the Ring,' he said, ‘though I do not know the way.'Q6 - What do you think of Frodo?Elrond raised his eyes and looked at him, and Frodo felt his heart pierced by the sudden keenness of the glance. ‘If I understand aright all that I have heard,' he said, ‘I think that this task is appointed for you, Frodo; and that if you do not find a way, no one will.Q7 - The books give more respect to Hobbits.‘But you won't send him off alone surely, Master?' cried Sam, unable to contain himself any longer, and jumping up from the corner where he had been quietly sitting on the floor. ‘No indeed!' said Elrond, turning towards him with a smile. ‘You at least shall go with him. It is hardly possible to separate you from him, even when he is summoned to a secret council and you are not.'Q8 - Sam is the greatest.Chapter 15 - The Ring Goes South‘That's what I meant,' said Pippin. ‘We hobbits ought to stick together, and we will. I shall go, unless they chain me up. There must be someone with intelligence in the party.' ‘Then you certainly will not be chosen, Peregrin Took!' But that will leave no place for us!' cried Pippin in dismay. ‘We don't want to be left behind. We want to go with Frodo.' ‘That is because you do not understand and cannot imagine what lies ahead,' said Elrond. ‘Neither does Frodo,' said Gandalf, unexpectedly supporting Pippin. ‘Nor do any of us see clearly. It is true that if these hobbits understood the danger, they would not dare to go. But they would still wish to go, or wish that they dared, and be shamed and unhappy. Q1 - Merry and Pippen are the best.' So Bill was going as the beast of burden, yet he was the only member of the Company that did not seem depressed.Q2 - Is Bill your favorite member of the fellowship? At that moment Elrond came out with Gandalf, and he called the Company to him. ‘This is my last word,' he said in a low voice. ‘The Ring-bearer is setting out on the Quest of Mount Doom. On him alone is any charge laid: neither to cast away the Ring, nor to deliver it to any servant of the Enemy nor indeed to let any handle it, save members of the Company and the Council, and only then in gravest need. The others go with him as free companions, to help him on his way. You may tarry, or come back, or turn aside into other paths, as chance allows. The further you go, the less easy will it be to withdraw; yet no oath or bond is laid on you to go further than you will. For you do not yet know the strength of your hearts, and you cannot foresee what each may meet upon the road.' Q3 - This is so good!‘Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens,' said Gimli.Q4 - Do you think the snowstorm they were caught in was by some evil design?

The gangs all here so the group comes in hot this week with Joy, Superman & Lois, Yacht Rock, Three Women, Star Wars Skeleton Crew, and Creature Commandos. Before getting to the nitty gritty, Andrew has a heart to heart with the audience at home. That's right, after some gentle soul searching and badgering from the internet, Andrew has come to the realization that Arcane is an amazing show. Peer pressure is real, kids!! After Andrew completes his apology, the show kicks off with Lauren talking about the new film. Joy, on Netflix. It's the true story of the birth (pun intended because I'm hilarious) of IVF treatment. While maybe not the most compelling film in the world, the acting and the message are solid and Lauren enjoyed it enough. Next up, at the behest of Andrew, Kevin discusses Superman and Lois and the recent series finale. This will go down as a show that deserved better but gave us so much. Is it perfect? No. But it does an amazing job portraying an older Superman/Clark Kent as a man and father along side his wife, Lois Lane. This is a debate with no winner, but the argument could be made this was both best Superman and the best Lois we've ever been given. If you love Superman and can handle that little bit of CW cheese, this deserves a watch. The finale is an actual tear jerker! Andrew then helps us sail away (an Enya song, not related to this at alll) with the new DOCKumentary (HBO's pun, not mine) about the Yacht Rock explosion. It's a fun hour plus of great music and storytelling about one of the most fun genres of music in the last 50 years or so. If the music industry interests you at all, or you're just a big Michael McDonald fan (you know you are...), then you'll love this one. unlike Joy, which Lauren felt was pretty serviceable, Three Women on Starz is a show with a lot of unfulfilled potential. Despite a really solid cast and being based on a best seller, the show starts of hot and steamy in the beginning and just kind of fades off into the ether. Lauren was ultimately a little sad that she watched, but at least she took the bullet for you! Kevin and Andrew go to nerd town next discussing the first episodes of Star Wars Skeleton Crew and DCs Creature Commandos. Neither one is absolutely mind blowing but both are a lot of fun and have a great path forward through their respective seasons. They should also both have a solid impact on the film universes the inhabit going forward. Finally, the show ends on a fun but whiny note. Kevin and Andrew discuss and then eviscerate The Madness and The Dark Tower. At least The Madness has some potential, albeit not a ton. The Dark Tower is an abomination for anyone who has read the source material or even just, you know, watched movies... As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture

This one is a little more of a nerdy deep dive into King's overall body of work, but we do talk a bit about Different Seasons, Cycle of the Werewolf, One for the Road, Dreamcatcher, Storm of the Century, If It Bleeds, The Stand, Dark Tower, and The Shining, all of which give some kind of passing nod to widely celebrated holidays or at least the bone-chilling horror of New England winters.
