Episode seventeen of Lexivore, has Megha and Renee tackle music, and pairings of music with books. We discuss our own genre preferences for music, briefly touch on the music our library has to offer, and discuss a few authors who use music - either directly in their books like Mercedes Lackey or in the background processes of writing like Rainbow Rowell. We also discuss some works that are paired by subject, like the Hamilton Soundtrack with a history book, "The Good Fight: Feuds of the Founding Fathers", or mood, like Miles Davis's "Birth of the Cool" with R.O. Kwon's "The Incendiaries", or by theme, Sharon Van Etten's "Are We There" pairing with Sally Rooney's "Normal People", and add a few more suggestions and recommendations along the way. We hope you enjoy our podcast! Thanks for Listening!
A lot has changed in Sharon Van Etten's life since she put out her last album, Are We There, in 2014. Over the past five years she's gotten into acting, she went back to school to get a degree in Mental Health Counseling, she's worked on some film scores and, the biggest change: She's a mom, now. But through it all she eventually found herself coming back to her first love: music. Sharon Van Etten has a new album out called Remind Me Tomorrow and it's unlike anything she's ever done before. Largely seen as an acoustic singer-songwriter up to now, her new album is full of pulsing synths, big beats and lots of strange, dark textures made with the help of producer John Congleton. The result is a stunning achievement for Van Etten. Remind Me Tomorrow is her most ambitious and adventurous album to date. For this edition of All Songs Considered, Sharon Van Etten and host Robin Hilton listened to her whole new album together, front to back. She reflects on motherhood, shares stories about the new songs and explains why she decided to blow up nearly everything fans have long loved about her music.

Before fans and critics knew Sharon Van Etten’s wry, whip-smart lyrics and enchanting harmonies, the singer/songwriter worked the fryer at McDonalds. Despite constant promotions, she moved on. She baked donuts at a donut shop, worked at wine stores, built Subway sandwiches, and revealed in our interview that Chipotle isn’t the only bad apple. As she started considering making a go of singing and songwriting, she connected with Kyp Malone, of TV on the Radio. Malone helped her make music her main gig. He wasn’t alone in recognizing her innate talent. Etten found a following fast. She started touring non-stop and churned out exquisite albums, including Because I Was in Love (2009), epic (2010), Tramp (2012), Are We There (2014), and her latest EP is I Don’t Want To Let You Down (2015). Even as she is now beloved internationally, Etten hasn’t lost her voice, physically or metaphorically, thoughtful gaze, or sly humor. In our Employee of the Month interview, which was recorded live at Joe’s Pub, she sang...
