This mix was an accident. Well, the mix itself wasn't an accident but the vibe and theme was. I was listening to some new music and heard a new track - A Flock Of Birds Part 1 by Motionfield, and decided to start a new mix with it. Not having any idea where I was headed, I tossed the track on my timeline and went looking for more music. I grabbed one, then two, then three, four, five tracks and before I knew it the mix had a watery vibe. Some of the tracks have that great dubby, watery synth wash sound I love. We take a little detour in the middle with a more acoustic sound on the Humble Bee & Offthesky track. But we eventually comeback to the deep sounds when we get to the Variant track. All the tracks are from this year except for the cut by Evitceles from 2019. Today's guest deejay is Jason Corder AKA offthesky. Jason was on the list of people I wanted to interview for solipsistic NATION after being introduced to his music through Bluetech's Somnia music label and featuring Jason's music on my show (here and here). Ambient and instrumental music that leans towards the ambient tends to sound indistinguishable. It's difficult to have a unique sound and in fact that is the point for many artists who create music in this genre. But this is not the case with Jason, His music is very organic. Burnished, you might say. It feel's worn-in, like a jacket you've owned for decades. Jasons music is very much his own and instantly recognizable. I know you're going to love this mix. I know I certainly have. I had the pleasure of listening to it again today as we were driving out of Palm Springs. It's not an environment I thought would be conducive to this mix but it fit right in there. I can't tell you how excited I am for this mix. Well, actually I'm telling you right now so that first line was bullshit. Suffice it to say I love this mix. It comes from our good friends at Lost Tribe Sound, an amazing record label that is having a hell of a year. Of course, last year was pretty darn good as well. Ryan Keane, the man behind Lost Tribe Sound, has put together a mix that is interesting and varied. It's cohesive without sounding all the same. This is a wonderful collection of tunes. Here's what Ryan has to say about this mix: Rarely do I get the chance to work on creating mixes of music, but I'm definitely more inspired to do so when I can ground the mix in a solid theme or concept. When I was given the chance to create one for the highly-esteemed Low Light Mixes, I figured, it better be decent. ‘The Western Divide,' my latest mix, is a grab bag of emotions, sort of manic, nostalgic, playful, with the ever-present tinge of dread and uncertainty that really mirrors how I've been feeling about life and society as a whole lately. I partly wanted to see how bizarre the music I mixed together could get while still remaining palatable. Honing in on some pieces of music that come across as somewhat otherworldly spaghetti western sounding, I set about juxtaposing them with odd forms of jazz, electronic, hymn-like horn and organ pieces. It may have a bit of that Ennio Morricone score to some dystopian future General Hospital sort of vibe to it. I've been infatuated as of late with unique uses of horns in experimental music, it seems that most of the time horns can easily be a pitfall in many styles of music. Either from overstaying their welcome, riding too long on what I like to call the “Dad Chords,” where it just gets cheesy, or simply becoming too noodly and irritating that the song would be better off without them. So hopefully I've combined some enjoyable uses of horns into the mix that avoid these situations, but who knows, I'm quite possibly out of touch. In full disclosure, I run the label Lost Tribe Sound, so a few of the selections in the mix are from recent or upcoming albums on the label. The opening piece is from a brilliant electro-acoustic Danish trio, Skyphone, which we've have the honor of putting out two albums for this August. Kali Malone follows with her perfect use of a church organ as the ultimate drone machine. Next, a very odd find from a Spotify suggestion of all places, Jeremy Krinsley and Greg Heffernan's only album together, ‘Material Culture 9.19.15' is some left-field electronica, filled with loads of charming moments. Next, Hampshire & Foat kick in, their ‘Saint Lawrence' album from this year is an instrumental masterpiece for those into dim-lit jazz fueled folk. Sailcloth up next, also blew my mind, primarily an experimental upright bassist, the featured selection works more off of a droning horn and subdued bass notes than some of the other more pronounced tunes on the EP, ‘Close Keeping.' Then, Danny Scott Lane who's recent album on Shimmering Moods is about as perfectly refined an example as one could hope for from an experimental drone/classical album. Hoera is a mixed bag of tricks as well, bizarre combos of electronics, jazz, ambient and folk somehow fold into a very satisfying whole, definitely recommend all three of their albums. Drombeg, another tasty discovery, thanks to the Thesis label, an intense focus of melody and progression make this breed of classical well worth checking out. Working in his way slowly into the tail end of Drombeg is a new piece from Ben McElroy, a highly emotive and creative songwriter, his whole catalog is sublime. Mute Forest, a long-time favorite, lent me an exclusive song from his upcoming album for this mix, introducing “The Riven Sun.” Followed that with a rising master of primitive guitar experimentalism, Seabuckthorn, from his new album, “It Can Ashen” is a droning genius. Next up, Spheruleus with his title track from his brand new and highly engaging electro-acoustic album for my label Lost Tribe Sound. Zakè follows with some seriously delicious droning classical string and tape experiments from this year courtesy of Past Inside The Present. Kinbrae's album, ‘Landforms' from earlier this year totally destroys me, and is a great example of how to use those horns properly. After that, Federico Mosconi delivers beautiful finger-picked guitar, bathed in the most melancholic waves of static and synths one could ask for! MALK comes next with ‘Re-treat' and delivers one of the most offbeat, original albums Lost Tribe Sound has ever produced, just give in to it. The penultimate piece comes from Offthesky, who's had a hugely impressive year with two new albums that I'd consider among the best of the year. “Future Fire” provides another gorgeous example of how horns can work so beautifully in ambient music. Finally, the mix closes with one of my favorite artists of all time, Geir Sundstøl. Geir's newest genre-bending album on Hubro, is beyond genius. I've got give a special thanks to Hubro, who've finally uploaded their entire catalog to Bandcamp, making it far easier to enjoy, definitely go explore the music they put out. Hope you enjoy these tunes. Thanks for listening and having a read. Thanks, Ryan! The end of a year is a popular moment to release a (label) compilation. Sometimes to look back, sometimes to look ahead.... and sometimes just because it's compilation time. Here's an (incomplete!) overview of some recent compilations presenting hours (and more hours) of listening pleasure. VARIOUS ARTISTS - ILLUMINATIONS II Dronarivm kicks off with this New Year Charity Compilation. No less than 30 track and almost three hours of music, priced ridiculously low to begin with... but of course you will want to pay more because of the amount of music, ánd because the profits go to 4Paws for Ability, an organisation that 'enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs.' (You can also donate directly of course, but why would you when you're offered a batch of quality music in the process?) The thirty artists presented here show why Dronarivm has become one of the most important labels in the ambient/experimental electronic genre. It's an impressive array of which I will only mention a few names: Aaron Martin, Bruno Sanfilippo, Loscil, Jacaszek, Machinefabriek, Endless Melancholy, Legiac, Offthesky, Olan Mill, Sven Laux, Anne Chris Bakker, Antonymes, Giulio Aldinucci, Pleq, Hakobune, Pausal Chihei Hatakeyama. And that are just 17/30. Even more impressive is the fact that all these tracks are exclusive - they have not appeared on earlier releases before. So this is what we call a 'no-brainer'! If you missed the first (2017) edition of Illuminations with another 28 tracks, you can still download it. It is a Name-Your Price release, but I strongly suggest to double your donation for Illuminations II. Simply because. Illuminations II (The New Year 2018 charity compilation) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - FROM HERE TO TRANQUILITY, VOL. 8: THE DARKENED PATH On a somewhat darker note, we find #8 in the From Here To Tranquility series on Silent Records, curated and founded by Kim Cascone. Not specifically an end-of-year release, by the way, but edition 8 in the From Here To Tranquility series. This edition 'addresses the pervasive darkness we find in the world today', and does so with 80 minutes of contemplative soundscapes with a retro-touch by Scott Gibbons, Kris Force, Chris Meloche, Dead Voices on Air, Michal Seta, Pragma, David Metcalfe, Legion Of Green Men, Aume, Meterpool, Mike Rooke and David Lee Myers. Not the most familiar names perhaps, and the music can be quite different in nature (a quiet atmospheric field recording track by Chris Meloche can easily be followed by a rather aggressive noise track from Dead Voices on Air), but you can simply count on Kim Cascone's experience in selecting quality sounds. From Here to Tranquility - Volume 8 (the darkened path) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - STEEL - DRAGON'S EYE TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY Not exactly a year-in-retrospect compilation, but an album to celebrate the twelve years of existence since Yann Novak relaunched his father's record label Dragon's Eye Recordings. The 'steel' in the title is 'named after the traditional eleventh anniversary gift (due to miscalculation and a love for the cover art by Jake Muir)'. A 'variety of styles, processes, practices, techniques, and most importantly points of view' is presented in this Name-Your-Price download featuring unreleased tracks by artists that recently released work on the label. Such as: Steve Pacheco, Tobias Hellkvist, Robert Crouch, Yann Novak, Jake Muir, Fabio Perletta, Geneva Skeen, Mark Kate and wndfrm. 78 Minutes of sheer minimalist joy. Steel: Dragon's Eye Twelfth Anniversary by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - RUSTED TONE SAMPLER I Rusted Tone Recordings does not look back to 2017 because it did not exist in 2017. It is a new independent label, curated by James Armstrong, 'specialising in ambient, drone and experimental music'. Judged by this introduction sampler the label will definitely be worth keeping an eye on: it introduces artists that will be releasing albums on Rusted Tone in the coming year. Think: Darren Harper, James Osland, Wil Bolton, Green Kingdom, Spheruleus - along less familiar names like Gallery Six & Oblivia, Net, Kepier Widow, Saltings and Kevin Buchland. Suffices to say this introduction succeeds in raising interest for the label! This, too, is a Name-Your-Price download if you want. But please keep in mind that proceeds 'will go towards supporting physical releases and sustaining Rusted Tone Recordings.' Rusted Tone Recordings: Sampler Vol. 1 by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - GRENZWELLEN I A somewhat different beast (and with that I mean considerably less ambient) is this massive compilation supporting the German radio show Grenzwellen, hosted by Ecki Stieg and broadcasted on Radio Hannover. Grenzwellen started in 1987 so it exists for more than thirty years now! It can be heard every wednesday for three hours starting at 9 pm CET via the Radio Hannover livestream. But even if you can't listen to their show this compilation is a great introduction to the music that can be heard on this show. Almost 4 hours of all kinds of experimental/electronic music in a mix of well- and lesser-known artist. I won't mention them all, but here are just a few of the names that I recognise: Giulio Aldinucci, Gabi Delgado, Ulrich Schnauss, CEEYS, Marsen Jules Trio (with a 15 minute string version of Étoiles de la Nuit), Bersarin Quartett, Bartosz Dziadosz, Hecq, Arovane,Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Sven Laux, Sankt Otten, Markus Guentner, Richard Chartier, Hotel Neon. 31 Tracks, and most of them previously unreleased. Grenzwellen host and compilation curator Ecki Stieg advises to play the compilation in its entirety: "please listen in the order given. Don't use the random button!." Grenzwellen Eins by Grenzwellen VARIOUS ARTISTS - MUSIC FOR ELEVATORS And, while on the subject of massive compilation projects this one cannot stay unmentioned. Only recently I became aware of a series of (free download) releases by the Mahorka netlabel called "Music for Elevators." A nice reference to many ambient "Music for ..." releases, as well as to 'Elevator Music' - which is usually referring to anonymous 'Muzak'. The first edition of this series was released way back in 2002, followed by Vol. 2 in 2005, Vol. 3 in 2007, Vol. 4 in 2012. The three-part set Vol. 5, which is said to conclude the series, was released in 2017 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3). You can still find the complete set online: the first four editions can be found on Archive.org (free downloads), the three-part Vol. 5 on Bandcamp (Name-Your-Price). So that is quite an impressive batch of unknown music to discover. Unknown - because in the tradition of netlabels, Mahorka presents the work of artists that are largely unknown - with the occasional exception depending on how 'deep' you are into the scene. "You are on board for a pushing all kinds of boundaries trip through what ambient music can be and what can be ambient music." 'Ambient' is not a very strict definition here, probably 'experimental electronic' would have been a more appropriate label. There are quite a few tracks that would probably scare the hell out of any ordinary citizen who got stuck in an elevator. But in a collection like this, everyone will find a lot of sounds to his/her liking! Music For Elevators Vol.5 (Part 1) by Various Artists

This mix was started because of one new tune - "Witch Season" from the new Infraction release by Offthesky and Pleq. I love that track and what better way to tell people about it than a new mix. With that song as a starting point things fell into place very nicely. All the music in the mix is fairly recent. Most is from 2014 or 2015 with the exception of the cut from The New Honey Shade which is from 2011. The mix as a whole is pretty straight forward ambient. Straight forward but awesome ambient. I love the tracks from dirk serries, tonepoet, The Circular Ruins, Janek Schaefer, Spheruleus...oh heck, I adore every cut in this mix. All of the albums used in this mix are available on Bandcamp so I'll link to them here in order of appearance in the mix... https://infraction.bandcamp.com/album/a-thousand-fields https://tonefloatikon.bandcamp.com/album/streams-of-consciousness-152401 https://dekorder.bandcamp.com/album/unfolding-luxury-beyond-the-city-of-dreams https://scissortail.bandcamp.com/album/ozark-dream https://dataobscura.bandcamp.com/album/full-circle https://coppicehalifax.bandcamp.com/album/lowlights https://experimentsinsilence.bandcamp.com/ https://manwatchingthestars.bandcamp.com/album/dusk https://tonepoet.bandcamp.com/album/headspace https://spheruleus.bandcamp.com/album/chronota Enjoy T R A C K L I S T : 00:00 Offthesky and Pleq - Witch Season 04:57 dirk serries - cloud surface break 11:11 Janek Schaefer - Beyond 16:16 The New Honey Shade - Sun is Elixir 19:00 The Circular Ruins - Full Circle 27:30 Coppice Halifax - lowlights 34:05 Experiments in Silence - duskforms 38:50 Man Watching the Stars - Midday 49:40 tonepoet - Showers of Lilac 54:00 Spheruleus - The Railroad 1:01:27 Experiments in Silence - Nascent Light 1:06:53 end

View on our site: http://tinyurl.com/n6p7xtw It is 1985 and I am really proud of the work behind me. Starting with thE Picasso up top I threw together in in art class, it really brings the room together. Speaking of the room, how about that wall paper? Funktastic, they don't make the stuff like they use to. The chalk coordinates on the table are more important then you think, commonly overlooked by the likes of my parents and other important people of the time....and don't think that confidence written all over my face has nothing to do with the magnificent plastic fortress I erected. The white knight is even facing the castle to battle, attention to details...that's how I roll. The dB’s released four critically-acclaimed albums throughout the Eighties, jam packed with melodic hooks. But for some strange reason, the band never achieved the commercial success they deserved, breaking up near the end of the decade. Then, a funny thing happened – word began to spread about how good those albums really were, and they started fetching high bids on Ebay. To meet the demand, Collector’s Choice music reissued the band’s first two albums in 2002.Now, the band is back with a brand new record, their first with the original lineup in some 30 years, called Falling Off the Sky . Icon Fetch talks with singer/guitarist Peter Holsapple about what brought the band back together in the first place, why the recording process took so long, and how the band is joined by several young musicians from the North Carolina scene for the new record.

First of all let us thank our Executive Producers for this show, Patrick, Simon and Marcus, thanks to you this podcast/feed can be. Of course a big thanks to our listeners that also made their donations during the past few weeks, sometimes a dollar, sometimes 5 or 10 dollars, we appreciate your gifts and hope more people will follow you! It’s now august 2010 and we’ve come back from a fantastic UK trip. We have visited Eastbourne, Portsmouth, Southampton, the Isle of Wight, Weymouth and Portland…. Long walks on the Isle of Wight have inspired us for this specific podcast: The Needles is the outer West Wight: it is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, England, close to Alum Bay. The Needles lighthouse stands at the end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994. The formation takes its name from the former fourth needle-shaped pillar called Lot’s Wife that used to stand in its midst until it collapsed in a storm in 1764. The remaining rocks are all short and squat and not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck. Since Jason Corder decided that becoming a weather man was farcely over-rated, he coined the ambiguously fitted moniker 'Off the Sky' which was in reality birthed in transit of his experimenting with converting chaos theories (especially those relating to weather systems*) into musical forms. And really its just an apropos title summating this atmospheric and acoustic communal project emanating from his studio in Kentucky ergo USA. Offthesky is truly a humble handle that reflects both Jason's mild manered nature and his "in-the-clouds" mind-set when relating to others. His musical miasmatic manifestations are loosely inspired by chaos theory mathematics, dark foreboding jazz, and various natural substances... The Jukebox plays "From Cold Distances to a Warm Place". Like more of his tracks, this one can be seen as 'glue' between other tracks, creating the perfect sound bath, the perfect moments, the movie directed by Jason Corder a.k.a. Off the Sky. I've gone on another binge of downloading music from netlabels. You know how the net is...one link leads you to another and then another and another and the next thing you know, you've download 10 free releases. Free is obviously a huge attraction for most netlabel releases. With some of the recordings, it's a good thing they are free. It's not that they are bad, just that I probably won't come back to them again and again in the future. However, some releases are very good. Nest, released earlier this year on Serein is an excellent recording. Marsen Jules has two Autoplate releases, Yara & Lazy Sunday Funerals, which I highly recommend. I haven't really had time to digest all the new music yet, but I thought I'd put together a quick mix using all netlabel albums that I've downloaded in the last couple of weeks. Here's a list of some interesting netlabels... Serein Aerotone Test Tube 12rec Tripostal Miasmah Rain Music Ekonetlabel Mendorla Thinner Autoplate I just noticed a new Off The Sky release at Autoplate. That should be worth checking out.
