I jumped onboard with the original XDA, and Jumped off right at the end with the HTC HD2! I had pretty much every incarnation in between, including the iMate Jam Ted mentioned. My personal favourite was the HTC Advantage that had a 4GB HDD (Yes, spinning HDD)! Along with the Battery life not being great, I recall the XDA also had volatile memory! So, if your battery hit zero, you would lose all your data, messages etc. until you synced with your PC! Any messages that you had received after the last sync would be lost forever! And lucky enough to be in the first few months of deliveries, meaning that I started at 16K and eventually moved up to 48k, microdrives, et al. Only replaced 6 years later with an Atari ST - I sold the last one, one broke but I still have a Spectrum Plus 48K in the attic. Might have to dig it out, complete with tape recorder. What was your first foray into computing? Ted Salmon I think it was a BBC Micro (or Acorn) at home and IBM XT at work. Mid-80's. Adrian Brain Mine was the Sinclair ZX81, after having played with my (at the time) girlfriend's brother's ZX80, which he assembled himself. Phillip Wray Vic-20 for me. Chris Kelly The first I had at home was the ZX80 but before that I had used the Commodore PET to learn BASIC (Beginners' All Purpose Instruction Code) at college in the late 70's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_PET?wprov=sfti1 Matt Jones I was a ZX81 guy! A while back I discovered a ZX81 emulator on the iPad, and managed to remember enough to write a simple program that ran first time with no syntax errors ! I was really impressed considering it was nearly 40 years ago and I was only about 12 at the time, and have had nothing to do with even trying to program these things since.

Phillip Wray on Point and click adventures - the Tex Murphy series are my favourites! Frank Niethardt I loved adventures back in the 90s. All of the titles that Gareth spoke about rang a bell somewhere. Most of them I played as well. In recent years I found it hard to find anything comparable. The Deponia series was recommended to me and I can recommend it myself. Could be a good starting point for Ted. Trump's Truth Disaster Chad Dixon Another entertaining and informative show gentleman. Some feedback for Gareth regarding my mobile gaming experiences. I had a ZX Spectrum back in the early 80's and loved playing those cassette-loaded games. However I never was a fan of pc or console gaming and hence never used independent joysticks. My first foray into gaming on-the-go was when I got a PSP. I think SSX on Tour Snowboarding was my favourite as it had a brilliant soundtrack. Since then I've done all my gaming exclusively on smartphones because I always have one with me and the recent models' processors can handle the intense graphics. I have been known to be playing Call of Duty Mobile for three hours straight on my Samsung Galaxy S20FE and not suffer any RSI. Matthew Jones on the Yamaha Organ Very enjoyable show. The Yamaha organ part was a nice trip down memory lane too and it's amazing how far that particular tech has come. Despite not being able to play properly, I had Keyboards, Drum machines, an Atari 1040ste and lots of midi cables in my failed attempts of Bedroom music production! I'd guess about £1,500 of kit, and this was considered not even entry level, probably more like "toy" level. Fast forward to 2022, and a £50 (used) iPhone 6S and Garageband can do a way better job than all my old kit did! Look on YouTube at a channel called iSongs. It blew my mind and shows quite how powerful this tech has become. (I recommend Sweet Home Alabama

I am not a Linux expert but have a basic understanding of how Linux works. Using the terminal I have installed Libre Office and Gimp and both packages loaded with no issues. Libre Office Writer runs well but I have not fully tested Gimp. Once you have downloaded the software it places them in a Linux app folder on the desktop where you can easily access them. I then discovered the following video that shows you how to add two Linux App Stores onto your Chromebook (Very easy video to follow) and allows downloading of software without using the Linux terminal. Although the guy who did the video does mention not all software downloaded from Linux App Stores will run on Chromebook as it is still in beta. Open up "Good Lock" again, go into "Home Up > Home screen" and toggle on "Apps List". Open the app drawer and Bob's your giddy Aunt, you can scroll up & down. Sort alphabetically or in custom order using the hamburger menu. Don't forget to explore other Good Lock options, there's loads of fun stuff there. The more the stuff is used, the more likely it is to get rolled into the base firmware. Chris Kelly My free Galaxy Buds Pro arrived yesterday. I tested them watching the WU Assassins on Netflix via the Roku remote app on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. I thought they sounded a bit "thin". Playing with the equaliser didn't make much difference. Then I remembered that the S22U has Dolby Atmos. This made a huge difference - the sound was perfectly adequate. However, when there were gaps in dialogue, the volume of the background sounds was low. It felt like the Atmos system disabled itself and they reverted to their, rather thin, output. As soon as the dialogue restarted the Atmos system kicked back in and raised the background volume and warmth. Moral of the story, you don't get somethin' for nuthin' and at the very least, use Dolby! I can currently get around 240Mb down and 70Mb up on 4G. The Three offer was £21 p.m. for unlimited data, including the 5G hub over 24 mths. A no-quibble 14 day return was what convinced me to try. My trial lasted 6 hours! Despite trying multiple but limited positions in my study for the router I just couldn't get a consistent connection. I need the router to connect with my wired network so could not try other rooms. The Three hub only supports 24 devices for wi-fi which is useless, but typical. Speed varied from 0Mb both up and down to 210Mb down and 40 up. The up was more variable. Down varied between 40-300Mb. The inconsistency was the killer. I'll try again in a year's time perhaps! Also… Jeremy Harpham on Using streetlights as 5G masts from last week's show. Looks like someone heard you, Ted! Link to an article in the register UK.gov spends £4m on 5G mobile mast lamppost project • The Register Kev Wright on my Ookla Speed Test Question I don't exactly know how to put this into words (or if I am even right!) but I think your mobile internet speed is kinda fixed based on the mast you are on at the time and is variable by a lot of different conditions like distance, and other people on the same mast. I don't think changing the server (even if you could) would matter as that would be overridden by the mast situation. I think the idea of having the ability to change it in Ookla is simply to allow you to get a test result if the default server is down or flooded. I finally jumped onto Stadia a month or so back, when they were virtually giving them away at £20. Like Ted I am a very occasional gamer, being more prolific in my younger years with an Amiga 500. The largest barrier of modern gaming is the cost, not only of the hardware - but the games themselves. I suspect this is why retro-gaming is making such a comeback. For £20 I appear to have high level graphics, most modern(ish) titles and an ability to play on multiple devices in my home - phone, laptop and TV. The regular sales for games make it more affordable - FIFA 22 recently just over £20 - as well as free games and trials. This makes the casual gamer more than content. I agree with Ted that the variety and breath of games are somewhat lacking. Far too many 1st person shooters for example, but I guess this is where the market is currently. I for one hope it lives longer than some of Google's recent attempts at platforms and services! Ian Barton on Air Rifles I have got an air rifle which we use for controlling rats and squirrels around the farm. You can buy them from several shops. You don't need a licence, but you must adhere to the various regulations (UK Airgun Laws). Punishment for not doing so is draconian. If you have a shotgun you will need a shotgun licence and if you want a rifle you need a firearms licence. Getting either of these licences is subject to a range of checks with the police and your GP. You will also need permissions for locations to use them e.g. vermin control needs the location to be vetted by the police or at a rifle range. Tailscale is "A secure network that just works with Zero config VPN. Installs on any device in minutes, manages firewall rules for you, and works from anywhere " Tailscale is built around the Wireguard VPN, which runs on almost any platform and is now built into the Linux kernel. You can use the basic product to connect up to 20 devices for nothing. I have it installed on my UNraid server which is running Tailscale inside a Docker container. Setting this up took all of 10 minutes. Next, I installed Tailscale on my Android phone and could use it to view my Emby media server via 4g. As it's a VPN all traffic between your computers is encrypted. There is an experimental MagicDNS that automatically registers DNS names for computers on your network, so you can use URLs that are easy to remember such as "mymediaserver" instead of having to remember its IP address. An additional plus point is that it somehow works on networks using CGNAT (mobile phones and Starlink) so you can access your phone from your computer via a web browser. I get between 150-200 down and about 30 up. No outages to speak of. You have to pay Starlink £500 for the dish, cable, mini tripod stand for mounting it on the ground, 110ft of power-over-ethernet cable and a router. Includes shipping from the USA. You have to pay upfront and wait until Starlink has a slot in its queue. (This makes sure that the system isn't overloaded with more users than capacity and that Starlink is available in your location.) The monthly fee is £80, but there is no data cap. The Starlink app scans your field of view and tells you where it's obstructed. You plug in one end of the ethernet cable to the dish and the other end into the dish. It supplies power to the dish from the provided router. Then plug your network cable into the second port of the supplied router. You use the Starlink app on your phone to log on and enable the dish. Once it's set up you don't have to use the supplied router, you can plug the dish cable into your own router. (Richard Yates added: The UK switched off analogue transmissions in 2012.) Ideally, the aerial needs to be the same length as the wavelength for best possible reception. However, at many frequencies, the wavelength is extremely long, making it impractical to make aerials that are the full wavelength. FM radio for example, would need aerials of a little over three meters long. That would be difficult to mount on a car and would tend to hit things as the car drove down the road. Also see Richard's detailed and technical summary of thoughts on the topic in the MeWe Group ------------------- Ian Barton with a Starlink Update After some experiments with positioning Dishy, I found that facing SW was giving me the most reliable signal. There are quite a few obstructions, so the view of the sky is a bit limited. However, Dishy is going to be moved to a chimney, which is about 10 metres above ground, this week. I am regularly getting download speeds of 150-200 Mbits. Yesterday the sky was completely covered with rain clouds and it was pouring with rain. I was getting download speeds of more than 200 Mbits. I have stopped using the supplied Starlink router. The cable is now connected to the WAN port of my Netgate firewall/router. The stats page of Starlink is on a separate network that is embedded in Dishy. So I have to create a firewall/NAT rule that can let me view the stats page on Dishy from my router. It consists of either a rotating disk with slots or holes or a lamp such as a flashtube which produces brief repetitive flashes of light. Usually, the rate of the stroboscope is adjustable to different frequencies. When a rotating or vibrating object is observed with the stroboscope at its vibration frequency (or a submultiple of it), it appears stationary. Thus stroboscopes are also used to measure frequency. The principle is used for the study of rotating, reciprocating, oscillating or vibrating objects. Machine parts and vibrating strings are common examples. A stroboscope used to set the ignition timing of internal combustion engines is called a timing light. For Record Player Platters The edge of the platter has marks at specific intervals so that when viewed under fluorescent lighting powered at mains frequency, provided the platter is rotating at the correct speed, the marks appear to be stationary. This will not work well under incandescent lighting, as incandescent bulbs don't significantly strobe. For this reason, some turntables have a neon bulb or LED next to the platter. The LED must be driven by a half wave rectifier from the mains transformer, or by an oscillator. ...you can also now get apps for smartphones which make use of the camera to clock the speed of rotation/movement. You can also get stand-alone meters of course, mainly used in industry I guess, with readouts.
