Send us a textDo you remember Desperately Seeking Susan from 1985? This movies got good review but the trailer sucked. Our recollection of Madonna Movies in the 80s is not overly favorable. The plot sounds ridiculous, but the nostalgia is definitely there. So join us as we go back and watch Madonna, Rosanna Arquette, and a whole list of famous actors not quite famous yet, get into some wacky hijinks that only the 80s could produce. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Plötsligt kommer bandets andra keybordist, Steve Porcaro in i rummet.
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about the great Debra Winger! Our B-Sides include Legal Eagles, Betrayed, The Sheltering Sky, and Forget Paris. Our guest is the inestimable Murtada Elfadl, Culture Writer, Critic, and Film Curator. We discuss Winger's stratospheric rise to stardom, her indescribable performance in Terms of Endearment, and her (unfair?) reputation for being “difficult.” There's also plenty of discussion about Rosanna Arquette's documentary Searching for Debra Winger, a film in which Arquette speaks with many famous actresses about aging in Hollywood. The motivation of the piece was partly motivated by Winger's exodus from the business for over half a decade in the mid-1990s. There's also conversation about Shirley MacLaine's 1984 Oscars speech, Tom Berenger being deeply proud of Betrayed and his performance in the film, and all those NBA players that appear in Forget Paris. Janet Maslin and Roger Ebert's superb reviews of Betrayed are mentioned, as is Debra's perfect laugh. Finally, we touch on when Raquel Welch sued MGM and won for being fired from Cannery Row (Winger replaced her in the role), Winger's dropping out of A League of Their Own after Madonna was cast (bonus Patti LuPone on Evita clip here!), Melanie Griffith and William Hurt being director Bernardo Bertolucci's first choices for the leads in The Sheltering Sky, and Debra Winger's infamous Watch What Happens Live episode.

Welcome back to the Video Store! Valentine's Day is almost upon us and if you're here looking for movie selections instead of out buying flowers or making dinner reservations, then sir or madam, I salute you. For this week's episode of the show I've picked four movies that feature unconventional relationships. After browsing the stores aisles looking for this week's film recommendations, I ended up rewatching all four of these movies (a couple of which I hadn't seen in decades) and for the most part they have all aged well. Harold and Maude (1971)Harold is a young adult obsessed with death, while Maude is a 79-year-old woman infatuated with life. The two share a hobby in common — attending the funerals of strangers — and soon this odd couple forms a close relationship. Wikipedia describes this film as a “romantic black comedy drama,” which only begins to describe it. It's sweet, it's funny, and it's emotional. While critics originally hated it, the film as gone on to appear in many “best of” film lists. Something Wild (1986)The last person you would expect a New York banker like Charlie to get involved with is a carefree person like Lulu, but after she kidnaps the yuppie for a weekend of reckless fun, Charlie finds the adventure exciting… until things get out of hand. When Lulu's husband discovers what the pair has been up to, he is none too happy. Someone — or perhaps everyone — has been lying. This not-to-miss thriller stars Jeff Daniels as Charlie, Melanie Griffith as Lulu, and a terrifying Ray Liotta has Lulu's husband, Ray. After Hours (1985)Have you ever had one of those days? After work, Paul Hackett heads to a local diner where he meets a woman named Marcy. The two exchange numbers and later, she invites him over to her apartment. This starts off a chain of events that will have Paul running around the streets of New York from one mess to the next. Before the end of the night his face ends up on wanted posters, he's chased by an angry mob, and he becomes involved in a city wide crime ring. It's a night that Paul will never forget — or maybe, survive. Featuring a star-packed cast including Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London), Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, Bronson Pinchot, Dick Miller, and even Cheech and Chong. Directed by Martin Scorsese.Valley Girl (1983)Randy (Nicholas Cage) is a punk rocker from Hollywood. Julie (Deborah Foreman) is a Valley Girl. Their worlds are complete opposites and it seems that everybody and everything will try and stop them from getting together, but sometimes, love finds a way. This classic 80s film was directed by Martha Coolidge and will take you back to the sights, sounds, and music of the 1980s.Thanks for checking out the podcast. If you don't have plans this Valentine's Day, you can have a great time renting and watching one of these films. And if you would prefer to get out of the house, you can always drop by a stranger's funeral. You never know who you'll meet! This is a public episode. Support 'The People's Joker': https://www.thepeoplesjoker.com/ Joku and Rosa review and analyze 'The People's Joker' a 2022 / 2024 American parody superhero film directed by Vera Drew, and written by Vera Drew and Bri LeRose. The film unofficially parodies characters from the Batman comics, and the main character is a transgender woman based on the Joker, played by Drew. The film also features Scott Aukerman, Tim Heidecker, Maria Bamford, David Liebe Hart, Robert Wuhl, and Bob Odenkirk in supporting roles. We also review 'Nosferatu' a 2024 American gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It is a remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu, itself inspired by Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Nosferatu and Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp as the married Hutter couple, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. We also review and discuss 'Crash' a 1996 Canadian erotic thriller film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg, based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name. Starring James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Elias Koteas, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette, it follows a film producer who, after surviving a car crash, becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs who are aroused by car crashes and tries to rekindle his sexual relationship with his wife. Mark and Joey Lewandowski (@soulpopped on X) discuss the 1985 comedy thriller After Hours. Directed by Martin Scorses, and starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Teri Garr and some papier-mâché, the movie focuses on a guy having a really bad night in New York City. In this episode, they also talk about terrible nights, mohawks, and Scorsese's filmography. Enjoy!Make sure to listen to the 2 Fast 2 Forever podcast (@2Fast2Forever on X). It's wonderful.
In this episode, Rosanna Arquette remembers her peripatetic childhood, her working artist parents, and eating lots of ‘high quality' fast food. A vegetarian menu follows at a commune, then leaving home in her teens, being 'discovered' in LA, and becoming a self-taught cook with her sights on healthy food. She describes her go-to salad and stuffing, and longs for more get-togethers with her siblings centered around creative meals. We also touch on her directing career, the conflicts actresses face between home and career, & her immersion in the Me2 Movement via her Harvey Weinstein experience. A down-to-earth and revealing conversation with this extraordinary woman. This week we're joined by "The Horror Dyke," Heather O. Petrocelli as we take a look at David Cronenberg and recent Palme D'Or Winner! In 1996, Cronenberg released the controversial Crash, about a man who seeks to reinvigorate his sex-life after a near-fatal automobile accident. We pair it with 2021's Titane, Julia Ducournau feminist body horror film that owes a huge debt to Croneberg's work, while remaining it's own truely unique vision. Say Hi!

She's a film director who made a movie called Desperately Seeking Susan. It's a caper that revolves around mistaken identity starring Rosanna Arquette and a then unknown Madonna. Seidelman went on to direct She Devil with Meryl Streep in her first comedic role. But Hollywood is a tough place for women directors. Nora Ephron came on the scene and directed Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail in the 1990s. And 25 years later Greta Gerwig had a big hit with Barbie. Seidelman eventually started working in TV, directing the pilot episode of a series that was to become a cultural icon, Sex and the City. We talk about sexism, ageism and the challenge of staying on top of your game. “Now What?” is produced with help from Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Stacey Maltin. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
In case you haven't heard, we're on a little bit of a journey, meeting various women who have had an influence on multiple pop songs. In today's episode we'll be visiting Rosanna Arquette. The interesting thing here is that whether or not the songs in this episode are about Rosanna has been an on-again, off-again mystery. For a while they're not, then they are again, and maybe, maybe not. Personally I think the evidence is there, although I can accept the explanation that there are other models for one song and there's a deliberate ambiguity in the other, because of the nature of the music that was influencing the singer. At any rate, there's a terrific storm going on tonight and I've already lost power briefly one time; let me get this out before there's another outage. Click here for a transcript of this episode. This week in physical media expands the gauntlet between masterpieces, greatness, exploitation and outright garbage. In other words, Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski have a little something for everyone. They include a film from the ‘60s that was lost until the ‘90s, one of the first films from Jonathan Demme, one of the last films of Howard Hawks and hopefully not the last from Philip Kaufmann. There's a box set of the works of Nico Mastorakis and a director's cut featuring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette. Two films from the great runs of Frank Oz and Kevin Costner get 4K upgrades and Peter tells you about one of the sexiest scenes he's ever seen. Spoiler that it involves neither an infamous 1980 musical with The Village People or any of the Jaws sequels; both of which practically get their own episodes here. 0:00 - Intro 1:00 – Arrow (Red Line 7000, The Nico Mastorakis Collection, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. 4K) 16:09 - The Film Desk (The Plot Against Harry) 24:07 - Media Book (Last Embrace 4K) 29:07 – MVD (The Linguini Incident) 38:07 – Kino (Bwana Devil, Can't Stop the Music 4K, No Way Out 4K, In and Out 4K, Girl on the Bridge, Twisted) 1:35:15 – Universal (Jaws 3-Film Collection 4K) 2:00:19 – New Theatrical Titles on Blu-ray 2:07:25 – New Blu-ray Announcements
Better late than never, we're back to chat about perhaps the most divisive episode in the herstory of GIRLS. Hannah and Jessa go and visit her father and we try and wrap our head and hearts around it all. What's going on with Frank? What's Sam's history with Rosanna Arquette? And what on god's green earth is Salvatore's job? But before that, we touch down on the Kardashians...because why not!
On this episode of Everything Fab Four, actor and activist Rosanna Arquette shares her favorite Beatles song and recounts where she was when John Lennon died. As part of a large show business family—including siblings Patricia and David Arquette—Rosanna began acting as a child. Her father, character actor Lewis Arquette, was well known as “J.D. Pickett” on The Waltons, while her mother Mardi was a poet, political activist, and therapist. Rosanna started working professionally as a teenager and has never stopped. She has since appeared in over 70 films, which have earned over $450 million in domestic box office sales. In addition to such early successes as The Executioner's Song and Baby, It's You, Arquette has appeared in such beloved classics as After Hours and Pulp Fiction. Arquette expanded her talent as a filmmaker by directing and producing the documentaries, 2002's Searching for Debra Winger and 2005's All We Are Saying. She is currently developing projects for both television and film through her company, Flower Child Productions. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support
This movie is the perfect all-nighter watch. NYC in the mid 80s'? Please and thank you! And much like the misadventures of Griffin Dunne in this Martin Scorsese masterpiece, After Hours, I just couldn't get this one done. It was a long and winding road that took me at least twice as long as usual. Very apropos. Now that it's done. Let's all relish the absolute monster cast of....Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O'hara, John Heard, Dick Miller, Bronson Pinchot, Cheech & Chong, Verna Bloom, Will Patton and all the bit players that round out this movie.
The little black book of a porno mag publisher goes missing after the former centerfold who won it at auction is murdered. Photocopies of the book reveal evidence a US Senate candidate took his ex-wife (Rosanna Arquette) to a sex club, even though she didn't want to go. Goren and Eames discover the blackmailer was the club doorman who's just turned up dead. The detectives learn the ex-wife returned to the club without her husband - got it on with everyone - and is now desperate to keep her daughter from knowing the tawdry truth. Carver falsely charges the politician with murder, all part of an elaborate ruse to elicit a confession from the ex in exchange for destroying the evidence. We're talking about Criminal Intent season 4 episode 14 "Sex Club." Our guest from this February 26, 2020 episode is Katie Mitchell from the Date with Dateline podcast. This episode is inspired by the political sex scandal surrounding Jack and Jeri Ryan. Hey, have you ever watched Girls and been like, “why does Jessa suck so much?” Well, wonder no longer! This episode takes a trip upstate to meet her dad (Ben Mendelsohn!) and his wife (Rosanna Arquette!!), a couple of stone cold weirdos who eat nothing but rabbit and do basically nothing. Hannah has a sexcapade with a goofy high schooler in a turtleneck, we do some whippets, and Jessa bails, but probably not for good. Alternating episodes are up on the Sex and the Cidiots feed, while every single step of our Girls journey is over at patreon.com/kevinandjon. Thanks for the support and welcome to all our new Patreon pals!
The National Film Registry says the movie is culturally, historically or aesthetically significant but who cares about them? Let's see what Jason Dedrick, Eric Fell and Vicky Van think as Rosanna Arquette and Madonna joins forces as a bored housewife and a… Madonna type.
It's time to get those classified ad's out and start stalking in a non-scary 1980's way because Zach and Amanda are discussing Desperately Seeking Susan. Rosanna Arquette and Madonna star in this genre confused/blended Rom-Com set in 1980's NYC. We had a bit too much fun discussing this one! "What do you want from me? What have I done? I'm just a word processor, for Christ sake!" We watched "After Hours" from 1985 with our friend Ben Cheaves and we gotta run if we're gonna make the last train home! Manhattan yuppie Paul - played by the brilliantly neurotic (and tragically cute) Griffin Dunne - in a seemingly neverending quest to get himself some tail (it's Rosanna Arquette - we get it) gets stuck across town with no cash and it's 1985 so he's royally up the creek. On his way home he meets edgy downtown arists who dabble in S&M, a bored waitress with a vengeful streak, a couple of leather daddies having their way with each other and a "quirky" ice cream truck driver. The Manhattan Soho portrayed in this movie no longer exists but it's shown in a such a surreal yet starkly realistic way - you feel like you're with poor poor Paul on his adventures getting picked up by trade who has second thoughts and even when he's being hunted down by an agry mob lead by Ice Cream truck girl (played by a young Catherine O'Hara). Some people long for days gone by and simpler times like the 80's and 90's but poor Paul's strange journey through Manhattan just to meet up with a girl, really makes you appreciate the little things like... touchless payment methods, ride sharing apps and swiping right. "I said I wanna see a Plaster of Paris bagel and cream cheese paperweight, now cough it up." This is the story of a bored suburban housewife Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) who finds herself drawn to reading personal ads and becomes especially interested in those featuring a mysterious woman named Susan (Madonna) who she ends up sorta stalking. And through a series of unfortunate events, Roberta inadvertently becomes mistaken for Susan while also getting amnesia. :o Along the way she ends up striking up a romance with a charming film projectionist Dez (Aidan Quinn) who happens to be friends with Susan's boyfriend who asked to look after her...also thinking that she is in fact Susan. (Even though she's really Roberta) Toss into the mix a quiet white-haired mob killer (Will Patton) who is on Susan/Roberta's trail seeking stolen a pair of valuable diamond earrings....and chaos ensues. :) Directed by Susan Seidelman (Making Mr Right, She-Devil), it's all very quirky and entertaining....
