Harrison also serves as a Survivor Consultant for the End-OSEAC Survivors Council, where he helps develop trauma-informed and survivor-led legislation to combat online exploitation and digital harms.  His work and lived experiences have created an appreciation for formative practices, especially what he calls “digital intentionalism.” After a year and a half of navigating life with a "dumb phone," he developed this concept for everyday people to help create space for what truly matters in a book he is authoring called: “The Moments Between Moments”. In his free time, Harrison leads a vibrant and diverse “life group” dedicated to helping students and friends find peace in an intentional, spiritual life.  This episode is sponsored by Bark Technologies: Learn about the Bark Phone Learn about the Bark App for iPhones and Androids  *Use code SCROLLING2DEATH FOR 10% OFF Learn about the Bark Watch

Mastering Life's Adventures: Being Your Best Self Through Soul Evolution!

In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the complexities of love and relationships with our special guest, Dr. Mark Hicks. While love can be simple, it often feels intricate and challenging due to our past and present experiences. Together, we explore the question: “What Makes Love So Difficult?”Dr. Hicks addresses the impact of toxic relationships and chronic issues that can lead to unresolved conflicts, ultimately causing some relationships to reach a breaking point. He emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, encouraging listeners to stop and consider their contributions to relationship dynamics rather than defaulting to defensiveness with statements like, “That's just the way I was raised.”Throughout the discussion, Dr. Hicks introduces two crucial stages of grief and acceptance that lay the groundwork for healthier, more productive relationships. He eloquently articulates that love is a feeling, a learned process, and a vital skill set—integral to cultivating deeper connections and enhancing our self-worth.Drawing an inspiring analogy, Dr. Hicks compares the soul to a diamond that may appear to be just a rock after rolling around in a cow pasture. This diamond can be polished with care and attention to reveal its true beauty. He reminds us that we are seen as precious by God, the Creator, the I AM Presence, and Christ—a powerful affirmation of our intrinsic worth.About Our GuestDr. Mark A. It's been a great summer! But now it's fall and your tween and teen sons, nephews, brothers, and cousins are back in school. Teen anxiety is on the rise with pre-teen boys feeling that stress. But there is recourse! Multihyphenate mental health advocate Kyle Mitchell joins us this week and shares his wisdom and experience with helping teenagers manage social anxiety. Remoy shares his experience with tween social anxiety after changing schools Kyle had a very similar experience and reflects back on dealing with anxiety as a tween. Turns out this experience is common among teen boys. They wanted to but had a hard time making friends and spent their time trying to avoid being noticed and judged.Remoy puts on his science teacher cap and lets us in on where this anxiety comes from.He walks us through the brain functions and glands that cause our physical and mental development. Our bodies develop faster than our mind, and we have to play catch-up to manage it all… How does that impact boys trying to survive new social situations? The prefrontal cortex is responsible for a lot of our mental processes, and yet, most of us know so little about it. Even if their body is physically mature, hormonal teenagers will not have a fully developed brain for another ten years. It all seems so unfair…Hormones help us manage stress but are also responsible for puberty, a highly stressful time in our lives.Kyle reminds us that anxiety is useful! The goal isn't to get rid of it but to manage it.Teenagers develop strategies for survival in social situations that could make them feel alone.Kyle shares some truths and tips about how to manage that, particularly for boys, who by that time, have already learned to repress emotional expression. He stresses the importance of boys developing a friend group that they can confide in and be vulnerable with.Dealing with self-esteem and confidence issues is universal even if it doesn't feel like it and knowing that can help boys overcome the fear of sharing themselves more openly. How to teach boys to be vulnerable? Kyle reframes what strength actually can look like: sharing is more than caring; it's actually a show of strength. How have you dealt with social anxiety over the years? What would you tell your teenage self about dealing with self-doubt and lack of confidence? We'll say it again: sharing is caring! Share your stories and takeaways and we'll share them with our online community! In our deep dive, Kyle shares his own story dealing with anxiety and how this led him to the work he does helping teens and tweens deal with theirs. He walks us through the strategies he used to help him manage anxiety as a young man. Self-love was the missing piece for Kyle and is for a lot of boys. He shares his feelings of self-hate and what led him to a turning point.Kyle is a father now and sees how his own kids deal with self-love and acceptance.Kyle shares his three-step process for dealing with social anxiety (37:39)Exposure therapy opened a whole new world for Kyle and got him thirsting for stretching his comfort zone.Rewards systems are hugely helpful. BoysWhile self-love is the name of the game, that term can be a turnoff to boys because it's associated with femininity.Kyle exposes how using the right language to draw boys into their healing. What was the turning point for Kyle, where he realized that anxiety wasn't running his life anymore?Kyle shares how working uncomfortability into his life and his family's life has changed everything. He loves looking back on his journey going from being an anxious kid to being a public speaker helping kids with anxiety. Kyle shares why his work is so important and the gratification seeing people move past their fears brings him.Kyle plans to visit schools with The DUDE Project this fall to help more kids deal with anxiety. Dedicating her life to helping others as a therapist andcoach is a result of post traumatic growth from her own personal life experiences. Insights: Crystal - "Betrayal is a devastating injustice. And although you're going to feel like you're crazy, you're not crazy, you're angry and you should be." Dave - "I think the take home for me, at least one of the many, is that avoiding that self-blame, it's that all of a sudden that inward right and anger, anger turns this inward, and then it's some of this, you know, maybe outward at first, but then it's this inward of what? What did I do? Am I not skinny enough? Why? Why did they do kind of searching for the why and then blaming themselves for this? I love that message." Liz - "I've never heard the great advice around self-harm regarding using an ice cube, rubber band, rubber band, I've heard, but Ice Cube I haven't. I really love both of those, actually. So, thank you for that. Because as I get that, I get that you're just trying to use access to physical pain to release the emotional pain. Makes perfect sense, actually, but harmful. We're just continuing the on the harm, so we have to stop, and I really appreciate you bringing that to our attention." Healing Hearts: Parenting with Purpose-Support for Resilient Families, Support for Parents, Childhood Trauma Advocacy

Send us a Text Message. In this episode, Rylie Heck speaks with Andrea Mancuso about parental well-being and how that can connect to their children's mental health. Andrea was a School Psychologist for the New York City Public Schools for over 14 years. She served the NYC school system and supported thousands of children and their families during that time. Much of Andrea's work emphasizes awareness and acceptance, proactive self-care and effective communication between parent and child. Throughout her years working with parents, she has found it to be exceptionally important for parents to open up to the possibility of locking arms with trusted professionals to best support their children. Andrea also works hard to empower parents to take care of themselves to the best of their ability. It takes a village; And the village must be healthy to be impactful with the care of vulnerable children. Andrea is a highly skilled consultant and dynamic facilitator. As an Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Andrea is experienced with both development and high-performance coaching. She is certified in Emotional Intelligence (EI) assessment and is currently the host of The V Spot Podcast. You're listening to Voices of Your Village. And today, I got to hang out with Maria Davis-Pierre to chat about Black families who are navigating autism diagnoses and what that Black side of autism looks like, both within the Black community and outside of the Black community. Maria graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Sociology and went on to obtain a Master's of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University. As a licensed mental health therapist, Maria primarily works with Black parents to provide support through education and advocacy training. Her passion for working in the field stems from her personal journey when her daughter received the diagnosis at a very early age. In addition to therapy, Maria dons many other titles, including coach, speaker, advocate, and author. Her first published work, a Self Care Affirmation Journal, is currently available for purchase on Amazon. Maria's unique approach to coaching and counseling exemplifies her drive and motivation toward greater acceptance and overcoming the barriers and personal struggles associated with raising a Black autistic child. I could have hung out with Maria for a long time. I love her. We got to chat about things that we need to be mindful of within our systems to support Black children across the board and especially our Black autistic children.  I'm so grateful for her dedication to this work. At the end of the episode, Rach and I chat about the ways we are working to advocate in our own lives and work, and we also have a rich conversation around the misunderstandings around what "sensory means".
