Welcome back to another episode of the We Live to Build podcast. Building marketplaces is hard because you have multiple customer types you have to serve, and always at least one side that supplies a service or good, and one side that consumes the service or good. There a probably a million ways that you can fail when trying to build marketplaces, which is why there aren't more marketplaces out there, why the ones that succeed do very well, and why there is so much potential to take advantage of a niche while still being able to generate 8 or 9 figures a year in revenue. Of course, it takes years of grueling work to make it to that point, if you ever get there, and it's something Bryan Clayton, Co-founder and CEO of Your Green Pal, is very familiar with, because his company will do over $20M USD this year in revenue. And oh yeah, he bootstrapped the business to profit. Bryan was very blunt about the struggles they faced, and how they worked through them all, and how he would do it again if he had to so that you can learn to avoid specific pitfalls that cause other companies with this type of business model to fail miserably. Even if you don't plan to build a marketplace, you will still find his experience translates to entrepreneurship as a whole, so I urge you not to skip this episode! In Episode 200 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Maureen Farrell, author of “The Cult of We: WeWork, Adam Neuman, and the Great Startup Delusion.” Maureen, along with her colleague and co-author Eliot Brown, were some of the first reporters at the Wall Street Journal to cover what is arguably the biggest financial debacle in the history of early-stage investing. And yet, this description doesn't even begin to capture the incredible story that is the rise and fall of WeWork: a story about a real estate company that was at one point the most valuable start-up in America, despite racking up over $10 billion dollars in losses over the course of just nine years and vaporizing nearly forty billion dollars in equity value practically overnight. The reality of WeWork—of what it is and what it was—stands in stark contrast to what its founder, Adam Neuman said it was to his investors, employees, and the media. It was going to be worth ten trillion dollars, more than any other company in the world. It wasn't just an office space provider. It was a tech play. Its spin-offs like “WeGrow” and “WeLive” were going to revolutionize education and change the world. Adam Neuman was going to solve Middle East peace and WeWork would help colonize Mars. As crazy as all of this sounds, it is emblematic of a larger decay in the most basic principles of capitalism that prioritizes the raising of capital over the turning of profits. It rewards storytellers over businesspeople. Price overvalue. This episode is broken into two parts, the first half of which is focused mainly on the particulars of WeWork, the characters involved, and the disastrous decisions made by its management along with the dereliction of its board. The second half focuses on the larger macro forces that are responsible for encouraging the type of behavior that we've seen in the case of WeWork and applying that template to other companies and their executives. We also explore the intersection of politics and finance, including a rise in demagoguery that parallels the institutional and moral decay we are witnessing across many parts of Western society. Welcome back to another episode of the We Live to Build podcast. Today's episode is with Stephen Keighery, an Australian entrepreneur who started, grew, and IPO'd a company on the Australian Stock Exchange. And now he's based in Louisiana buying houses, flipping them, and holding on to them. The reason why this is relevant is because his strategy is extremely important. You've heard this before, diversify, diversify, diversify. When you're running a company, there's a chance that it might exist today, but doesn't exist tomorrow, and if you ask Warren Buffett how to make billions of dollars, he'll say to start as early as possible. So if you understand this concept of compounding your wealth over time and you couple that with owning a company, there's a lot of ways in which you can grow your wealth and diversify during the process of running and growing a company, and do it in a way that if your company should ever die, you walk away with something of value, and if your company doesn't die, you still walk away with something of value. So my conversation with Stephen was really interesting because he not only talked about specific legal loopholes to maximize your profit and minimize your taxes through the process of diversification from your company and purchasing property, but we also got to hear his story. So, I hope you enjoy this episode, and I hope that you come away from it with a deeper sense of appreciation for your own value, for all of the hard work you're putting into starting and growing the company you have, and don't forget through it all that you need to get paid too. I loved this topic because both identities are important, but how does one reconcile in their mind having both hats at the same time? Does being a parent make you a better entrepreneur? Does being an entrepreneur make you a better parent? - Did having a kid make you more ambitious?- Does your growing business give you more or less time with your kids?- Do you plan your day around your kids or your company?- When is the best time to start a business (when having kids?)- Do your kids understand what you are doing?- How do you handle your kids when you are working and they are at home?- What is the best thing about having kids while working?- What is the worst thing about having kids while working?- Is having 2 kids harder than having 1 in terms of being an entrepreneur? I really appreciate how honest Julien was about his situation, and I could feel from our conversation how much he loves his family and his business, and that they absolutely affected the other. I took away from this episode that while it's hard to be both, it's not impossible, and it might just make you a better human being, but I'll leave that up to you to decide. ELISABETH SHARP MCKETTA is a storyteller and the author of eight books: INCLUDING Fear of the Deep (2016) and Fear of the Beast (2019), both collaborations with artist Troy Passey; the biography Energy: The Life of John J.
