Slap bang in the middle of their Aus/NZ tour, we caught up with The Murder Capital! Joining Luke Scanlan in conversation is bassist, Gabriel Blake. After waiting years to finally play to fans in the region, Gabriel speaks of what it means to give fans a taste of tunes from across their three albums: When I Have Fears, Gigi's Recovery and Blindness Plus, why he thinks albums – also referred to as ‘records' – can be taken as a true record of your life at the time of release. Find out what it was like to step up a gear and work with Grammy-winning producer, John Congleton. The guy has only worked with global names such as Phoebe Bridgers, Nelly Furtado, The War on Drugs, Bono, Sigur Ros, Bombay Bicycle Club… no big deal, right?! Gabriel opens up on the moment that Irish music is having right now, with The Murder Capital and Fontaines DC both touring the APAC region in 2025. Plus, he gives his thoughts on the pride in Irishness emanating from KNEECAP and what it was like to play alongside them at festivals in their early days. And…. The Murder Capital's early days. What was it like to fly the post-punk flag and burst onto the scene at the same time as Fontaines and shame? A huge episode. One you cannot miss!

Will Never Die But You Will”. Puedes escuchar Rebelión Sónica en radio Rockaxis los jueves a las 10 y 22 horas, con la conducción de Héctor Aravena. Tras la edición radial, los capítulos son publicados en Spotify, Google Podcast y Apple Music.

It's about recognizing and nurturing that creativity in everyday life. Congleton believes that creativity is as natural as breathing. Everyone possesses it, but often, people forget their innate artistic potential. Recognizing and nurturing this creativity can lead to personal fulfillment and innovation. Artists serve as conduits for expressing the human experience. They capture the essence of what it feels like to be alive at a particular moment in time, offering insights that go beyond mere information through all forms of art and expression.  The digital age presents new challenges, such as the instant playback of music and the pervasive influence of social media. Artists must balance these tools with their creative instincts to maintain authenticity. Performing live offers a unique opportunity to connect with audiences in a shared, ephemeral experience. It allows artists to reinterpret their work and engage with listeners on a deeper level. From his astounding drum sounds to the aggressive guitar sounds he conjures, Congleton defines modern record production. Starting as a teenager in Dallas, Congleton studied and learned the craft of engineering from the ground up. While recording bands on the local scene he developed into an engineer of note. Soon he was being called to record projects as diverse as Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, all the while continuing to work with the local indie rock scene.  Upon returning to Dallas, Congleton quickly established himself as the best producer in town. It was while working with the Polyphonic Spree he met Annie Clark, now better known as St. Vincent. Their partnership over six albums has won Grammy awards and been universally praised by critics as some of the most important music of our times. Now based in Los Angeles, Congleton continues to grow and flourish. In addition to the repeat business from long-time clients, he’s now established among the best of the best. Recent productions include Death Cab for Cutie, The Murder Capital, Tegan and Sara, Regina Spektor, Wallows, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten and many more.

John Congleton is a great producer, and as it turns out, also a great musician. The Paper Chase were, for many years, his only musical project and even as his star began to rise as a producer, he was still churning out unsettling, chromatic, occasionally catchy, often nasty music. Often described as a combination of avant-garde jazz, indie and punk, the band tick all of those boxes and much more. This week we're talking about their second album, Hide the Kitchen Knives which helpfully/frustratingly is only available on YouTube. An album so twisted that it actually gave Mark nightmares. We also talk about the band's discography at large and chat about why some albums never seem to make it to streaming platforms.

This episode originally aired on October 19, 2023. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two women who lead fierce, fantastic rock bands: Karly Hartzman and Marisa Dabice. Hartzman is the driving force behind the band Wednesday, which started as a solo-ish vehicle for her songs back in 2017 but has blossomed into a full band with an already-sizable catalog. Everything they've done is worth checking out, but it sure feels like Wednesday hit exactly what they'd always been striving for on the album Rat Saw God, which came out earlier this year. Hartzman's lyrics are both pointed and poetic—amazing in their specificity and delivered with some serious passion, whether in a country-ish moment, or one that feels almost metal. Today's other guest, Marisa Dabice, thinks Wednesday sounds like Black Sabbath meets Sparklehorse, which is both accurate and something that's probably never been said about any band before. Check out “Bull Believer” from Rat Saw God. Marisa Dabice is the voice behind Mannequin Pussy, a band that's been releasing blistering music since 2010. Just this week, Mannequin Pussy announced the release of their long-awaited fourth album, I Got Heaven, which will come out in March of 2024. Hartzman, as you'll hear in this conversation, has already gotten a listen to the record—which was produced with John Congleton—and she loves it. The title track is already getting rave reviews for taking Mannequin Pussy's intense punk energy and adding a bit of sweetness with some synths and a sugary chorus, but those aspects almost make it sound even more confrontational in a way. In any case, it's awesome: Check out “I Got Heaven” right here. In this chat, these two friends talk about touring, and specifically about how unusual it can feel to perform—and how that can lead to actual tears on stage, not the most fun experience. They chat about the difference between Mannequin Pussy and Wednesday fans, and about the pressure to enjoy your success while it's happening. Oh, and about saunas. You've gotta love a sauna. Enjoy. (English Interview starts at 1:35) Das Debütalbum dieser Band aus Dublin erschien 2019, hieß „When I Have Fears“ und befeuerte den Hype um irischen Post-Punk, den Bands wie Fontaines D.C. losgetreten hatten.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've paired up a couple of old friends and onetime tourmates, Sharon Van Etten and Jonathan Meiburg. This pairing was especially fun for me, since I had the pleasure of putting these two together in a different context many years ago, when I was editor of The A.V. Club: Sharon and Jonathan performed an amazing version of the Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks duet “Stop Draggin' My Heart Around” for the site's A.V. Undercover series. Seeing their faces together brought back that fun memory, and it was great seeing them reconnect. Van Etten is a singer and songwriter who's been making records for the past decade plus, growing and changing and taking chances in exactly the way you hope truly talented people will. Her amazing early records were quietly intense, very confessional affairs, but she burst from the seams with subsequent releases. In 2019, she released Remind Me Tomorrow, which brought in bigger sounds and colors and an entirely different kind of confidence to her songwriting and performance. She gives partial credit in this chat to producer John Congleton, who was recommended to Van Etten by none other than Jonathan Meiburg. Earlier this year, Van Etten released another incredible album called We've Been Going About This All Wrong, which puts into intense songs some of the feelings we've all been feeling the past couple of years. You know what I'm talking about. Check out “Mistakes” from that new album, and check out Van Etten on the Wild Hearts tour over the next few months, with Angel Olsen and Julien Baker.  Today's other guest, Jonathan Meiburg, is best known in the music world as the driving force behind the band Shearwater, which he started way back in the late ‘90s as an offshoot of his previous band, Okkervil River. But under this name, Meiburg has created a vast and varied catalog that combines his writerly mind with sometimes-moody, sometimes-joyous music. Shearwater just released their first album in six years: It's called The Great Awakening, and it's what a lazy podcast host might refer to as a return to form—or at least more austere earlier vibes. Don't let that six-year gap fool you, though: Meiburg has been plenty busy. He's got another band called Loma with the members of Cross Record, and they've got a third album on the way. Oh, and Meiburg wrote and released an incredible book called A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World's Smartest Birds of Prey, which rolls up history, science, and travel into one really beautifully written piece. (Around Talkhouse HQ, we like to brag that Meiburg has written a bunch of pieces for us over the years.) As you'll hear in this conversation, he's already started working on another book. Check out “Empty Orchestra” from The Great Awakening. As you'll hear, Van Etten and Meiburg are old friends who toured together long ago, but hadn't seen each other in person until very recently, when Van Etten's tour took her to Hamburg, where Meiburg is currently living. They talk about writing songs—and specifically about how gibberish can become lyrics, which I always find interesting. Meiburg remarks on Van Etten's transformation as a stage performer over the years, and they even chat about Sharon's son—specifically his relationship to the movie Cool Runnings. Enjoy. Bully - "Just For Love," a 2021 single on Sub Pop. If you somehow missed SUGAREGG, the third studio album from Nashville's Bully, when it was released a year and a half ago then it's definitely time to circle back. Furious and fiery, Alicia Bognanno put her all into the record, which just finally got to be played on live stages this past December. Ahead of that nine-date east coast tour, Bognanno revealed a new single called “Just For Love.” Co-produced by John Congleton during the SUGAREGG sessions, the song is similarly raw and wiry, with Bognanno's lyrics half-obscured by her coarse expressions. While it's not exactly clear, my interpretation of the song is it's a conversation with one's self about wanting to grow and change and to do it for yourself this time rather than for a partner (if so, great advice). These days, Ashley Smith stays busy as the owner and operator of Alive and Fine — a vintage shop in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood — and as one of the founders/organizers responsible for the annual Hover Craft maker fair (which is set to return to The Pritzlaff Building on Dec. 5). She also runs the recurring One Trick Pony pop up flea market and, oh yeah, is a mother of two as well. Though she's developed quite an impressive reputation in the Midwestern vintage, maker, arts and craft realms, Smith is also one hell of a lead singer. Recently, My First Band host Tyler Maas stopped by Alive and Fine and asked Smith about her business, Hover Craft's return and her on-stage alter ego as the frontwoman of renowned Milwaukee acts like Red Knife Lottery and Whips. Over the course of the conversation, Smith spoke about singing harmonies on her mother's church compositions as a kid, finding and quickly immersing herself in the basement show and legion hall scene as a teenager, recording with John Congleton and playing with Paramore during the Red Knife days, memorable moments from her Whips tenure, and much more. Along the way, Smith also talked about co-founding Girls Rock Milwaukee camp and teased an upcoming song she's working on. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. In celebration of the 10th anniversary, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack reflect on the writing and recording of the third Wye Oak album, CIVILIAN. In this episode, they describe this intense period as a young band when they were taking every touring opportunity available and were getting burnt out by working constantly. For CIVILIAN, they were moving out of their comfort zone with recording as they sought help beyond their tight knit Baltimore community and went to Dallas to have the record mixed by John Congleton. On a personal level, Jenn talks about the panic attacks she was experiencing along with a sense of shame that she was feeling in response to her music career taking off, distancing her from the people she loved. In addition, Jenn and Andy talk about a key romantic relationship that was ending, which greatly informed the songwriting for this record. From ominous energy in Dallas to questioning religion and long-term relationships to capturing the right guitar solo to making beautiful ugliness, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

www.bullythemusic.comA very old saying goes that no one saves us but ourselves. Recognizing and breaking free from the patterns impeding our forward progress can be transformative — just ask Bully's Alicia Bognanno. Indeed, the third Bully album, SUGAREGG , may not ever have come to fruition had Bognanno not navigated every kind of upheaval imaginable and completely overhauled her working process along the way.“There was change that needed to happen and it happened on this record,” she says. “Derailing my ego and insecurities allowed me to give these songs the attention they deserved.”SUGAREGG roars from the speakers and jumpstarts both heart and mind. Like My Bloody Valentine after three double espressos, opener “Add It On” zooms heavenward within seconds, epitomizing Bognanno's newfound clarity of purpose, while the bass-driven melodies and propulsive beats of “Where to Start” and “Let You” are the musical equivalents of the sun piercing through a perpetually cloudy sky.On songs like the strident “Every Tradition” and “Not Ashamed,” Bognanno doesn't shy away from addressing “how I feel as a human holds up against what society expects or assumes of me as a woman, and what it feels like to naturally challenge those expectations.”But amongst the more dense topics, there's also a lightheartedness that was lacking on Bully's last album, 2017's Losing . Pointing to “Where to Start,” “You” and “Let You,” Bognanno says “there are more songs about erratic, dysfunctional love in an upbeat way, like, ‘I'm going down and that's the only way I want to go because the momentary joy is worth it.'”The artist admits that finding the proper treatment for bipolar 2 disorder radically altered her mindset, freeing her from a cycle of paranoia and insecurity about her work. “Being able to finally navigate that opened the door for me to write about it,” she says, pointing to the sweet, swirly “Like Fire” and slower, more contemplative songs such as “Prism” and “Come Down” as having been born of this new headspace. Even small changes like listening to music instead of the news first thing in the morning “made me want to write and bring that pleasure to other people.”An unexpected foray into the film world also helped set the table for Sugaregg when Bognanno was asked to write songs for the 2019 movie Her Smell , starring Elisabeth Moss as the frontwoman of the fictional rock band Something She. “It got me motivated to play music again after the last album,” she says. “I loved reading the script and trying to think, what music would the character write? People asked if I'd play those songs with Bully but the whole point was for them to not be Bully songs. It was nice to get my head out of my own ass for a second and work on a project for someone else,” she says with a laugh.A highly accomplished engineer who ran the boards herself on the first two Bully albums, Bognanno was ready to be free “from the weight of feeling like I had to prove to the world I was capable of engineering a record, and wanted to be content knowing for myself what I can do without needing the approval of others to validate that.”So for SUGAREGG , she yielded recording and mixing responsibilities to outside collaborators for the first time and trekked to the remote Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minn., an unexpected return to her home state. Behind the console was John Congleton, a Grammy-winner who has worked with everyone from St. Vincent and Sleater-Kinney to The War on Drugs and Modest Mouse. “Naturally, I still had reservations, but John was sensitive to where I was coming from,” Bognanno says. “He was very respectful that I'd never worked with a producer before.”The studio's rich history (classics such as Nirvana's In Utero, PJ Harvey's Rid of Me and Superchunk's Foolish were recorded there) and woodsy setting quickly put Bognanno's mind at ease. Being able to bring her dog Mezzi along for the trip didn't hurt either. “I had never tracked a record in the summer, so waking up and going outside with her before we started each day was a great way to refresh,” she says.SUGAREGG features additional contributions from longtime touring drummer Wesley Mitchell and bassist Zach Dawes, renowned for his work on recent albums by Sharon Van Etten and Lana Del Rey. Dawes and Bognanno met at Pachyderm to work on parts just two days before tracking, “but it ended up being so much less stressful than I had expected and I loved it,” she says. “Zach wanted to be there to help and make my vision happen.”With 14 songs on tape, Bognanno and friends left Pachyderm thinking SUGAREGG was done. But once back home in Nashville, she realized there was more to be written, and spent the next five months doing exactly that. Moving to Palace Studios in Toronto with Graham Walsh (Alvvays, METZ, !!!), Bognanno and Mitchell recorded “Where to Start” and “Let You,” which proved to be two of the new album's key tracks.Ultimately, SUGAREGG is a testament that profound change can yield profound results — in this case, the most expressive and powerful music of Bognanno's career. “This is me longing to see the bigger picture, motivated and eager for contentment in the best way,” she says. “I hope the happy go lucky / fuck-it-all attitude shines through some of these songs because I really did feel like I was reentering a place I hadn't been to in a while and was excited to be back there.”

A lot has changed in Sharon Van Etten's life since she put out her last album, Are We There, in 2014. Over the past five years she's gotten into acting, she went back to school to get a degree in Mental Health Counseling, she's worked on some film scores and, the biggest change: She's a mom, now. But through it all she eventually found herself coming back to her first love: music. Sharon Van Etten has a new album out called Remind Me Tomorrow and it's unlike anything she's ever done before. Largely seen as an acoustic singer-songwriter up to now, her new album is full of pulsing synths, big beats and lots of strange, dark textures made with the help of producer John Congleton. The result is a stunning achievement for Van Etten. Remind Me Tomorrow is her most ambitious and adventurous album to date. For this edition of All Songs Considered, Sharon Van Etten and host Robin Hilton listened to her whole new album together, front to back. She reflects on motherhood, shares stories about the new songs and explains why she decided to blow up nearly everything fans have long loved about her music.

Something For Kate: A three piece band from Melbourne, Something For Kate are comprised of vocals/guitarist, Paul Dempsey, bass player, Stephanie Ashworth and drummer, Clint Hyndman. To date they have released six Top 10 gold and platinum studio albums, a double album of B-sides, a double Best-Of album, a DVD, a live album, three e.p’s, a book to go with a mountain of singles. From the early days the band built a varied fan base in Melbourne, recording a 7 track demo tape (which was later released as The Answer to Both Your Questions EP in 1996) that sold out of multiple pressings. This gained them the attention of Sony Music's A&R, Chris Dunn, in 1995, who quickly signed them to the Murmur label, making them label mates with Newcastle’s very own Silverchair. The label became their home for the next 10 years and during this time the band toured endlessly throughout Australia as well as the US, Europe & Japan. They have toured with everyone from Death Cab for Cutie to David Bowie, also playing many major festivals. After fulfilling their commitment with Sony, Something For Kate then signed to EMI/Capitol Records Australia, releasing their 6th studio album Leave Your Soul To Science in 2012. They completed the recordings in Dallas, Texas with producer, John Congleton who has also worked with St Vincent, Explosions in the Sky and Modest Mouse. The album debuted at Number 1 on the Australian ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) chart and number 5 on the International ARIA chart and a huge national sell out tour commenced soon after. Recorded at The Triffid in Brisbane on the 11th of November 2017. Recorded by Reuben Aptroot and mixed by Branko Cosic.

Montreal's genre-defying SUUNS (pronounced SOONZ) recently announced a new album, Felt, with the first single, “Watch You, Watch Me.” I can't wait to hear the new music. If you forced me to define SUUNS, I'd say they make a mixture of indie, kraut, and shoegaze rock, but it's not easy to define them and that's what makes SUUNS special. I hung out with Joseph Yarmush (guitar and bass) and Max Henry (bass) from the band the last time they were in Vancouver touring their fourth record, Hold/Still. We chatted in a busy alley behind The Rickshaw and while I set up, Joe had the cutest conversation about a double rainbow with his young son. How does Joe experience music with his son? Which band member does not like Massive Attack? Which song from Hold/Still did SUUNS work on for over two years? Why are SUUNS songs constantly evolving? Which song off Hold/Still is actually a reworked old SUUNS song from the very first record? What was it like working with an outside producer, John Congleton--for the first time? What delicious meals do these guys cook each other for dinner? How does the band decide who gets to control the music player in the tour van? What are Joe and Max listening to right now? Who do they think is cool? You'll have to listen to find out! Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) SUUNS, Hold/Still (2016) "Paralyzer" 2) SUUNS, Hold/Still (2016) "Translate" 3) SUUNS, Images Du Futur (2013) "2020" 4) SUUNS, Hold/Still (2016) "Brainwash" ALL songs CANCON

The Districts will release their third album, "Popular Manipulations," next month. From what we've heard so far, the Philadelphia band changes up its sound on the record by adding elements of shoegaze to its twangy indie rock. They also tackle more mature subject material. The Districts stopped into Denver for a show at Globe Hall earlier this month. Beforehand, the band members visited the CPR Performance Studio to play three songs and speak with Jeremy Petersen about becoming more confident in their songwriting, working with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton and their opening gig for The Rolling Stones.

Texas native John Congleton's production, engineering and mixing résumé is as diverse as they come, spanning projects with everyone from Blondie to The Roots & Erykah Badu to Angel Olsen to Talking Heads' David Byrne to gospel legend Kirk Franklin. A Grammy-winner for his work on St. Vincent's 2014 self-titled album, Congleton also fronted The Paper Chase for over a decade, crafting some of the most feverishly manic and intriguing music known within indie-rock -- thanks to, in his words today, being "willing to destroy the integrity of a completely reasonable song for the effect of an audio hallucination." Last year saw the release of his first post-Paper Chase album under The Nighty Nite moniker, titled "Until The Horror Goes," and he's already produced five albums that have come out so far in 2017 from Nelly Furtado, Blondie, Future Islands, Xiu Xiu and Goldrapp. On this episode, Congleton recalls his early memories of ZZ Top and Fawlty Towers, the influence of Pink Floyd, Public Enemy and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop on the Paper Chase, what artists of all walks ultimately want from an engineer or producer, where exactly he keeps his Grammy and why we're still fascinated with the Zodiac Killer. The Fat Possum Record label indie rock whiz kids called The Districts announced that their next record, Popular Manipulations, will come out August 11th, 2017. For some reason, music journalists like to focus on two things when talking about the band: 1 they are "young" (the band was formed in 2009 by four high schoolers) and 2 they come from a "small town" (Lititz, Pennsylvania, the self-titled "Coolest Small Town in America"). The band of course would rather be known for their music. I hung out with band members Rob Grote and Connor Jacobus in the tour van when The Districts were touring their 2015 record A Flourish and a Spoil. We had a few beers while parked in the alley behind Vancouver's Rickshaw Theatre. I was hoping a few beers would get these small town shy guys to loosen up, but I couldn't have predicted how the location of the interview would effect the band. Do I get Connor and Rob to come out of their shell? What is a "bro rub"? How can the band avoid talking about being "young" and being from a "small town"? What is a Lil' Chub and why is it in the tour van? What was the first record the guys listened to as a band? Why did the band decide to work with producer John Congleton? What is the band's favorite cover to play live? How many penises do we see while doing the interview? (It's a surprising amount.) Listen! Tracks played on the show... 1) The Districts, A Flourish and a Spoil (2015) "4th And Roebling" 2) The Districts, A Flourish and a Spoil (2015) "Peaches" 3) The Districts, Telephone (2012) "Layla" 4) The Districts, A Flourish and a Spoil (2015) "Suburban Smell" NO songs CANCON

Grammy-winner John Congleton is one of the most sought-after record producers in indie music today, both because he's insanely talented and because he hates being bored. In his own uncompromising career as a rock musician, John pushes buttons and boundaries with a wild mix of rock, jazz, and noise, and his production career conveys a similar impatience with doing what's expected: his collaborations with St. Vincent, Cloud Nothings, Strand Of Oaks, Mountain Goats, Earl Sweatshirt and dozens of others illustrate his insanely wide range.
