On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of women who came up together during one of the most exciting musical eras ever, and who've got the stories to prove it: Gina Birch and Vivien Goldman. Birch started the Raincoats with friends from a London art college in 1977, stepping right into the burgeoning punk scene with records that were notoriously challenging in a scene not known for being particularly welcoming to women to begin with. The Raincoats were never poppy enough to flirt with the mainstream, but thanks to Kurt Cobain, the band had a bit of a resurrection in the mid-1990s. At Cobain's behest, Nirvana's American label re-released the Raincoats catalog, complete with liner notes by Cobain, and the band subsequently made its first album in over a decade. They were even set to tour with Nirvana in Europe, but Cobain's death scuppered that plan. But Birch didn't slow down; she set out on a filmmaking career while still pursuing music; she even made music videos for the likes of New Order and The Libertines. Later this year, Birch's paintings will accompany a hardbound volume of Sharon Van Etten's lyrics. Just recently, Jack White's Third Man Records came calling, and it reignited Birch's musical endeavors: This week marks the release of her first proper solo album, called I Play My Bass Loud. Check out the title track right here. Vivien Goldman is known more as a writer than as a musician, but she's done both of those things and much, much more. She worked in PR for Bob Marley and the Wailers way back when—and she lives part of the time in Jamaica nowadays, which is where she Zoomed in from. At the height of the punk boom, she released an influential single called “Launderette” before transitioning more into writer and journalist mode: She was the editor of influential UK music paper Sounds and co-wrote the Massive Attack song “Sly.” She was also roommates with Chrissie Hynde and, more important to this conversation, Geoff Travis of Rough Trade Records, which is how she got to know Gina Birch. These days, Goldman has been teaching about the history of punk at NYU, and she dove back into music last year, releasing an album called Next is Now. I've only scratched the surface, too: Check out viviengoldman.com for a more complete picture. In this conversation, Birch and Goldman chat about the old days and the newer days, how roles and respect for women have changed over the decades, and about the famous musician and producer, Youth, who encouraged them both—and produced both of their new records. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Gina Birch and Vivien Goldman for this fantastic chat. Episode 113 note: This one had an…odd energy. It's the only way I can describe it. It's the holidays, so I guess we are all in a weird mood. Give it a listen and let me know if it is just me. Also odd because in that we only feature audio from one of the bands we discuss (Specifically “Hide” by Secret Shame). Both the OSEES and Sharon Van Etten are excellent, but neither let themselves to concise audio clipping. Today, we're speaking with one Scout Gillett, from Brooklyn, NY by way of Kansas City, MO. Scout is a musician and runs her own booking agency called Road Dog Booking. Her atmospheric and contemplative debut record titled “no roof no floor” is out now via Captured Tracks, and at the time of our conversation in November 2022, wrapped up a tour in support of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, and celebrated a release party for “no roof no floor” at the record Bar in KC with The Whiffs, Blanky, and Magic Marty. The music of Scout Gillett is very difficult to pin down sonically, and I personally believe that's a very good place to land for an artist. If you enjoy the musical stylings of Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Mazzy Star, and Patty Smith, Scout has a seat at that table. And, I highly recommend catching her upcoming solo tour on the West Coast through the month of December, starting on Dec 7 at The Firehouse in Joshua Tree, CA, dear listeners. For our conversation, we will be discussing The Man Who Died in His Boat, the 9th studio album by American “experimental pop” musician Liz Harris under the moniker, Grouper, which was released on Monday, February 4, 2013. This record consists of outtakes from the previous years, when she was in the process of recording Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill.Enjoy the conversation!
As broadcast November 17, 2022 with plenty of Ruffin' about. Tonight we mark the passing of a man who was instrumental to the early Motown Sound and therefore the entirety of what was to come in funk and soul, Jimmy Ruffin. Unfortunately, the elder brother of David passed away on this date, so we wanted to show some love for a guy who never seemed to get his full due to start the show. Lots of the aforementioned "what was to come" for this week in the rest of hour one, with a feature of Lady Blackbird, Vendredi sur Mer, SAULT, Robert Glasper, and our dear friend Kamen Ross who finishes the hour super strong and live way up in the Rockies! Dan Lloyd once again ghosts into the studio while knocking stuff around for our AMPED feature, with a highlight on some deserving Grammy nods in the rock category in part 4, along with some amazing new stuff just out for the remainder, with our KROCKPOT feature giving a nod to one of Korea's hardest working bands Walking After U to close the radio process tonight.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Jimmy Ruffin – What Becomes of the Broken HeartedLee Fields – I Should Have Let You BeBobby Oroza with Cold Diamond & Mink – The Otherside (inst)Lady Blackbird – Feel It Comin' (single vers)Vendredi sur Mer – Tout m'ennuieChannel Tres – 6am Part II (30:03)SAULT – God's WillJuan Gabriel & George Benson – Luna Tres LunaThe Teskey Brothers – This Will Be Our YearLM.ORG feat Alice Russell – Playground GamesRobert Glasper feat Hindi Zahra – FeverKamen Ross – Yellow Rose (Live at Rocky Mountain National Park) Part III (59:45)Fake Names – Delete MyselfSmashing Pumpkins – Beyond the ValeShame – Fingers of SteelSharon van Etten – When I DieR. As broadcast November 14, 2022 with plenty of concert memories for the start of the work week. For anyone that was up in Seoul this weekend to see either Big Thief's first concert in Korea or Khruangbin's performance the same night, you all saw amazing shows. Big Thief's performance at Rolling Hall was something else, with the glitches and hiccups along the way somehow making it even better. Of course, it's Monday and that means all new music on this show aside from the upcoming shows, and we had a lot of great stuff drop last Friday with Sharon Van Etten, Chiiild, Jordana, and SAULT providing the big fireworks in hour one along with a highlight of PREP's show this Friday up in Seoul. Part 3 we were Poppin' Off as usual, and big new joints and albums from Wizkid, Rihanna, Stormzy, and The Boss added the big spotlights. Having helped pave the way, Alela remains at the heart of a very strong current movement for female troubadours - a scene driven by the success of the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Angel Oslen, Julien Baker and even Phoebe Bridgers - but harking back to Joni Mitchell. It was Cat Power that proved an inspiration to Alela herself when she first started out making The Pirate's Gospel, then aged 19. It's taken almost five years for Alela to create another record since Cusp. Between raising her two young daughters (making a lot of snacks), renovating her Portland home and like all of us - getting through the global pandemic - it has taken time, graft and discipline to craft songs to a standard she has set for herself. But once she got into the studio (not just any studio but Tucker Martine's ‘Flora' in Northeast Portland, Oregon) the songs were recorded quickly. The new album Looking Glass processes the themes of domesticity, love & loss and how to face these dark times. In Alela's words the record is about:“Feeling the lightness and the darkness of the world at large. How do you get through your day-to-day life? How do we create a sweet, peaceful world for your children when there's a lot of chaos out there”.No doubt the record will act as a tonic to the blurry gloom outside your window. I would highly recommend you drink it down. Find the longer article at https://www.songsommelier.com/Support the show

This week's guest, writer/drummer S.W. Lauden, first wrote about NY band Fountains Of Wayne in the book 'Go All The Way: A Literary Appreciation of Power Pop'. During that time, he listened to their third - and breakout - album 'Welcome Interstate Managers' for months on repeat, and eventually formulated a theory that it's actually a sly, sophisticated Gen-X concept album. To be clear, this is solely HIS theory. Nonetheless, it lent itself to a really fun conversation, and the pure-pop mastery of Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger's songs cannot be denied! Songs featured in this episode: Valley Winter Song - Fountains Of Wayne (NPR Tiny Desk Concert); Next Aquarius - The Brothers Steve; Go All The Way - Raspberries; Radiation Vibe - Fountains Of Wayne; Fight Test - The Flaming Lips; That Thing You Do - The Wonders; Mexican Wine, Bright Future In Sales, Stacy's Mom - Fountains Of Wayne; Buddy Holly - Weezer, Just What I Needed - The Cars; Hackensack - Fountains Of Wayne; Hackensack - Katy Perry (Live MTV Unplugged, 2009); No Better Place, Valley Winter Song, All Kinds Of Time - Fountains Of Wayne; Rock-n-Roll Star - Oasis; Little Red Light, Hey Julie, Fire Island, Bought For A Song, Supercollider, Yours And Mine, Elevator Up - Fountains Of Wayne; Popular - Nada Surf; Hackensack - Fountains Of Wayne (Live Jersey 4 Jersey feat. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've paired up a couple of old friends and onetime tourmates, Sharon Van Etten and Jonathan Meiburg. This pairing was especially fun for me, since I had the pleasure of putting these two together in a different context many years ago, when I was editor of The A.V. Club: Sharon and Jonathan performed an amazing version of the Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks duet “Stop Draggin' My Heart Around” for the site's A.V. Undercover series. Seeing their faces together brought back that fun memory, and it was great seeing them reconnect. Van Etten is a singer and songwriter who's been making records for the past decade plus, growing and changing and taking chances in exactly the way you hope truly talented people will. Her amazing early records were quietly intense, very confessional affairs, but she burst from the seams with subsequent releases. In 2019, she released Remind Me Tomorrow, which brought in bigger sounds and colors and an entirely different kind of confidence to her songwriting and performance. She gives partial credit in this chat to producer John Congleton, who was recommended to Van Etten by none other than Jonathan Meiburg. Earlier this year, Van Etten released another incredible album called We've Been Going About This All Wrong, which puts into intense songs some of the feelings we've all been feeling the past couple of years. You know what I'm talking about. Check out “Mistakes” from that new album, and check out Van Etten on the Wild Hearts tour over the next few months, with Angel Olsen and Julien Baker. Today's other guest, Jonathan Meiburg, is best known in the music world as the driving force behind the band Shearwater, which he started way back in the late ‘90s as an offshoot of his previous band, Okkervil River. But under this name, Meiburg has created a vast and varied catalog that combines his writerly mind with sometimes-moody, sometimes-joyous music. Shearwater just released their first album in six years: It's called The Great Awakening, and it's what a lazy podcast host might refer to as a return to form—or at least more austere earlier vibes. Don't let that six-year gap fool you, though: Meiburg has been plenty busy. He's got another band called Loma with the members of Cross Record, and they've got a third album on the way. Oh, and Meiburg wrote and released an incredible book called A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World's Smartest Birds of Prey, which rolls up history, science, and travel into one really beautifully written piece. (Around Talkhouse HQ, we like to brag that Meiburg has written a bunch of pieces for us over the years.) As you'll hear in this conversation, he's already started working on another book. Check out “Empty Orchestra” from The Great Awakening. As you'll hear, Van Etten and Meiburg are old friends who toured together long ago, but hadn't seen each other in person until very recently, when Van Etten's tour took her to Hamburg, where Meiburg is currently living. They talk about writing songs—and specifically about how gibberish can become lyrics, which I always find interesting. Meiburg remarks on Van Etten's transformation as a stage performer over the years, and they even chat about Sharon's son—specifically his relationship to the movie Cool Runnings. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sharon Van Etten and Jonathan Meiburg for chatting. And Azin Samari, a documentary editor on "The September Issue"—the award-winning film about Vogue magazine, Amazon docu-series "Lorena" and more recently, Hulu's "Sasquatch." Azin is currently working on a documentary about the refugee crisis. She discusses her experience with religion, editing for documentary, and its similairities to editing for audio. Thanks to Matador Records for use of the song "Appointments." And Katie Nelson from Grandstand Media for support with music clearance. A big, big thank you to the many Julien Baker fans that reached out. We could only pick one but feel free to record a voice message and I promise to play it on a future mini-episode. And of course to our guest Allison, thank you for sharing the music in your head with all of us in the world — it's a truly special thing. Links to the other episodes discussed — Black Belt Eagle Scout, Ezra Furman, Travis and Lucy Dacus. Julien Baker will tour with Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten, for the Wild Hearts Tour, from 21 July to 21 Aug 2022. Remember Season 3 will drop July 7. Throughout their nearly two-decades-long career, Arcade Fire have put out a number of revered albums. But they've also shared a few lukewarm releases. In this week's Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen reflect on the band's discography and decide whether or not Arcade Fire's comeback album We hits the mark (28:43).Along with reviewing Arcade Fire, Steven and Ian go over other big new in indie music this week. They discuss the relevancy of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, whose official inductees were announced this week including Dolly Parton and Judas Priest (4:33). The Yeah Yeah Yeahs also teased their return (12:50), prompting Indiecast to recall the band's impactful career and their very terrible 2013 Mosquito album cover. In this week's Recommendation Corner (52:59), Ian talks about Hatchie's album Stop Giving The World Away, which sounds like a crossover of Olivia Rodrigo and Turnover. Steven gives a shout-out to Sharon Van Etten's great new album, We've Been Going About This All Wrong.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. We had the pleasure of interviewing Hrishikesh Hirway over Zoom video!Acclaimed musician and Song Exploder host/creator Hrishikesh Hirway's first EP under his own name, Rooms I Used to Call My Own, is out now. The album features collaborations with a long list of acclaimed artists, songwriters and producers including Yo-Yo Ma, Jay Som, Baths, Jenny Owen Youngs, Jimmy Tamborello (The Postal Service, Dntel), Jonathan Snipes (Clipping), John Mark Nelson and Grammy-winners John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen) and Kimbra.Rooms I Used to Call My Own marks the first time Hirway has released music under his own name following five critically acclaimed records under the moniker The One AM Radio. A deeply personal work, the EP is informed by Hirway's experiences as a podcast host; eschewing the inward gaze of his previous work as an artist, Rooms I Used to Call My Own instead focuses on collaboration, each song formed out of a conversation of sorts with everyone he's brought into the project with him. Likewise, the subjects of the EP are all other people: the people he loves. The songs are about the deep love and appreciation he holds for his wife, Lindsey, as well as his parents and family.Hirway is also set to continue his Spring tour with Jenny Owen Youngs, performing select dates throughout the west coast in May. They'll be on stage together, doing one combined set of all their songs, performing as a duo. Jenny and Hrishikesh have collaborated as co-writers on several songs and are both storytellers, as hosts of popular, award-winning podcasts: Hrishikesh with Song Exploder, The West Wing Weekly and Home Cooking; and Jenny with Buffering the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. These special performances will be a mix of songs and stories from two dear friends; find tickets HERE and see below for a list of dates.Hrishikesh Hirway has been producing music for over two decades; first with his project The One AM Radio, and later with MOORS, a collaboration with Oscar-nominated rapper/actor Lakeith Stanfield. As a composer, his credits include the Netflix original series Everything Sucks!, the theme for ESPN's 30 for 30 podcast and the theme for the Song Exploder series on Netflix. Hirway launched the award-winning podcast Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and tell the stories behind their inspiration and creative process, in 2014. Since then, the podcast has been streamed and downloaded over 65 million times, and has featured guests including Fleetwood Mac, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Solange, U2, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Lin-Manuel Miranda, The Roots and many more.
