What's the secret ingredient that keeps us going? The Gemara tells of the evil government that stopped us bringing wood to the temple in order that sacrifices wouldn't be able to be brought. And they stopped us bringing the first fruits to Jerusalem, which was part of a beautiful ceremony. Why did they stop these 2? Why not outlaw shabbos, mikva or circumcision? These 2 mitzvot had great celebrations associated with them. There were parades and more! *They knew what kept us going even at "tough" times was simcha - joy.* When I say tough it could be "tough" as our religion was persecuted or "tough " as maybe it's not cool to practice anymore. What we learn is joy in our mitzvah observance is the secret ingredient!! There are 2 different elements of Shabbos, the positive mitzvot we do like enjoying, making it special etc and the prohibitions like not doing work. *Our work is to not just focus on getting the laws of Shabbos right but to add to the great joy and associate with Shabbos. All blessings of the week come from Shabbos.* *Kiddush will be associated with this aspect.* Kiddush: *In the Ten Commandments we are commanded to “Remember the Shabbos day to sanctify it.”* One fulfills this Torah obligation by saying Kiddush on Shabbos. The Rabbis instituted the recitation of Kiddush over a cup of wine. Both *men and women* are equally obligated in this mitzvah. The cup must hold at least a 3.8 fl. oz.; 112 ml. It is best to recite Kiddush using a silver kiddush cup. One may also use a glass or any other non-disposable cup. It is best to fill the cup to the top. However, if one does not have enough wine to fill the cup he need not fill it, provided that the cup contains the measurement above of wine. Upon completing Kiddush, the one who recites it should drink a “m'lo lugmav,” the *amount of wine that fills one of his cheeks.* For an average adult male, this is between 1.5 and 2 fl. oz. (44-59 ml). This amount should be drunk within a 30 second time span If it is too difficult for the one who says Kiddush to drink a m'lo lugmav, *someone else may drink the cheek full.* Having cups of wine/grape juice prepared ahead of time so after you make kiddush you can share a bit from the cup of blessing into each of these so they can be passed around and each person can put a bit in their own cup. *One fulfils Kiddush only if a meal is eaten immediately after Kiddush in the same location.* If one does not eat bread, such as at a kiddush after shul one may eat a food containing the five grains. upon which the brocha of Mezonos is said. Arguments to stand/sit: a. Standing – “Vayechulu” is testimony that Hashem created the world and rested on Shabbos. Just as witnesses stand before Bais Din when testifying, similarly some stand for this testimony and remain standing while reciting the entire Kiddush. b. Sitting – When helping others fulfil their obligation, everyone is joined together for that moment, this is done through sitting. Follow ones custom if you have one, or sit at least for the blessing. For both kiddush and havdalah important to listen to words as someone is saying it on our behalf. Challas should be covered during kiddush. Havdalla: *Just as it is a mitzvah to sanctify Shabbos on a cup of wine as it enters, it is a mitzvah to sanctify it on a cup of wine as it departs. This is done by reciting havdalah. We also recite blessings over spices and on a candle.* Women are also obligated to hear havdalah so they should listen to it carefully. In a place where wine is not available, one may make havdalah on beer or any other beverage that is considered a local drink like coffee or tea. Once night falls on Saturday, one may not eat or drink anything other than water before havdalah. *Work may not be done before havdalah. Therefore, if you need to turn on lights or perform

Rav Dr. Joseph Breuer (1882-1980) was a visionary leader who successfully rebuilt the Kheilla of Frankfurt of Kahal Adas Jeshurun on American shores. Born to his parents Rav Dr. Solomon Breuer and Sophie Hirsch, daughter of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch, he moved from Hungary to Frankfurt as a child. He later became the Rosh Yeshiva of the Frankfurt Yeshiva. Following Kristallnacht in November 1938, he managed to escape with his family, arriving in the United States in February 1939. He immediately set out to establish a fully structured kehilla, not limiting his position to congregational rabbi. With a goal of establishing institutional completeness, offering the full gamut of religious, educational and social services within the kehilla infrastructure, while maintaining its total independence. The twin goals of Austritt (separation from communities who didn't share Torah values), along with Torah Im Derech Eretz (integration into surrounding society without compromising on Torah values) were to be the guiding lights of the kehilla, and would permeate its myriad of institutions. Incredibly, with the assistance of a dedicated cadre of members of the community, within a few years he built a mikva, schools, shul, kashrus supervision, Bais Din, secondary schools, a publication society and much more, while the membership grew to over 800 families. He passed away at the ripe old age of 98. South African Jewish history is unique in several ways. Composed primarily of Jews of Lithuanian origin, it grew in the early decades of the 20th century with the waves of immigration from the Lithuanian area of the Russian Empire. Entering the diamond trade and politics, they integrated into South African life, often standing at the forefront protesting the racial injustices of the apartheid system. The Bais Din had prominent rabbis such as Rav Yitzchak Kossovsky, and the chief rabbinate was led by dynamic leaders as well, but it was the investment in education in the post war which transformed the South African Jewish community. The Brooklyn born Rabbi Avraham Tanzer arrived from Telz, Cleveland to Johannesburg in 1963 on a two year contract. He'd remain for 57 years. Through his leadership of Yeshiva College, the Benhazel Hebrew Congregation and the general community, he and other dedicated educators and activists, ensured that the Jewish youth of South Africa would have a proper Torah education and that the community at large would flourish. The following is from the publication of the Bais Din of Crown Heights:It is the Chabad custom to fill the menorah with sufficient fuel to burn for at least fifty minutes, so that it remains lit for half an hour after nightfall.The Rebbe strongly emphasized the importance of lighting the menorah in its proper time, before tzeis ha-kochavim, and also with regard to mivtza Chanukah—encouraging and facilitating the lighting of a menorah on time by as many Jews as possible. See below for more detailsIf you are unable to light the menorah before the time for Maariv, you should first recite Maariv and only then light your menorah. Below is an excerpt from Sichas Motzoei Shabbos Vayeishev, Ohr L'chof Kislev, 5739 (taken from a recording of the Rebbe's address). See the original sicha for the full message.“The main thing is the action … It is readily apparent that in order to light the Chanukah lights in their appropriate time, we must make all of the necessary preparations in advance, on erev Chanukah. Otherwise, we may end up dragging the lighting to beyond sundown. How much more of an absolute necessity it is to consider, out of ahavas Yisrael, ways in which our fellow Jews might be enabled to light the Chanukah lights in the exact way that we do (kemocha)—in the same manner we conduct advance preparations.“To achieve this, we must devote our time on erev Chanukah to the Chanukah campaign, with enormous effort and energy, and go all out for this goal … We cannot allow ourselves to rationalize that if we are unable to reach out to an individual in time to ensure that he lights before sundown on the first night of Chanukah, we can always do so in time for the second or third night. Or that even if we reach out for the first night, we are satisfied if he lights before chatzos, or while members of his household are still awake, and so on, based on the details specified in halachah. Such an approach is entirely misplaced and misguided regarding any of the mitzvos, and certainly for the mitzvah of the Chanukah lights.”

And Yaakov said to Yitzchak: I am Eisav, your firstborn.Bereishis 27:19Yaakov Avinu engaged in deception multiple times to obtain what was rightfully his. Is such behavior permitted according to halacha? The Gemara (Berachos 5b) indicates that Rav Huna suffered financial loss because he did not give his sharecropper what he deserved, even though the sharecropper had acted dishonestly with Rav Huna. But the Gemara (Megillah 13b) states that Yaakov told Rachel it was permitted for him to engage in deception against others who attempt to deceive him (e.g., Lavan).The Mordechai suggests that one may seize a specific object taken from him, but he may not take other objects in response to being cheated (like with Rav Huna). The Ben Ish Chai limits the Mordechai's license to seizing the item in public. If that is not possible, then surreptitious retrieval is permitted. The Sho'el Umeishiv agrees, though he is unsure whether seizing the amount owed is equivalent to seizing a specific object.The Rashba, by contrast, argues forcefully that lying is absolutely forbidden even to retrieve one's property taken by others. Perhaps he would explain Yaakov's statement in Megillah as referring to a “white lie,” but an absolute lie would be forbidden.The Mishpatecha L'Yaakov (a contemporary work) rules that an employee who was tricked by his employer (they had agreed on an hourly rate, and the employer later falsely claimed the agreed rate was lower) may inflate his hours to receive the payment he is owed. He claims that the Rashba's stringent approach applies only in Bais Din, but outside of Bais Din one may lie in such a case.
