Rabbi Larry Rothwachs is a licensed social worker and accomplished leader in both rabbinic and mental health fields.  Since August 2002, Rabbi Rothwachs has served as the senior rabbi of Congregation Beth Aaron in Teaneck, New Jersey, fostering a warm and supportive community alongside his wife, Chaviva, a special education teacher at the Sinai Schools. Rabbi Rothwachs is a graduate of Yeshiva College, the Azrieli School of Jewish Education, and the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, and he received his semicha from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS). From 1998 to 2016, he taught Talmud at Yeshiva University High School for Boys and the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey. In April 2016, he was appointed Director of Professional Rabbinics at RIETS, where he trains and mentors future rabbinic leaders.  Additionally, since 2016, he has served as the head rabbi of Camp Morasha, the largest orthodox summer camp in North America. His extensive background includes leadership roles such as president of the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County and executive committee member of the Rabbinical Council of America. In May 2016, Rabbi Rothwachs was recognized by The Forward as one of "America's Most Inspiring Rabbis."   In January 2023, Rabbi Rothwachs was appointed as the founding rabbi of Meromei Shemesh, a developing community in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel. Inspired by over two decades of rabbinic leadership in Teaneck, where he witnessed 20% of his congregants make aliyah, Rabbi Rothwachs brings his extensive experience to this aspirational, Torah-centric kehilla. Meromei Shemesh is designed to be a vibrant shul-centered community, combining the warmth and connectivity of an American shul with the spiritual richness of life in Israel.   Rabbi Rothwachs also maintains a personal blog (larryrothwachs.com), where he shares insights, reflections, and resources related to Torah, mental health, and personal growth.   CONNECT DVORA ENTIN: Website: https://www.dvoraentin.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dvoraentin YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@misconceptionspodcast

Editor's Note: This episode is dedicated in memory of Joy Rothke (Shayna Fradel bas Reb Velvel) a"h. I want to thank Ben Rothke for his friendship and ideas that have helped me throughout this project. May our learning be a zechus for his sister's neshama and may Hashem give him and his entire family much nechama.  - Moshe Kurtz --- In this episode, Rabbi Michoel Zylberman delves into a fascinating responsum by HaRav Nota Greenblatt zt"l of Memphis (reprinted in Kol Tzvi 22-23, 5782-5783) in which he defends a local conversion that was later challenged by rabbis in New York. Rav Greenblatt's uncompromising fealty to rigorous halachic standards and to the needs of his community serves as a paradigm for rabbinic leadership in America.  Rabbi Michoel Zylberman is the Sgan Menahel (Associate Director) of the Beth Din of America. A Yadin Yadin musmach of RIETS, he was a member of the Bella and Harry Wexner Kolel Elyon, and holds an MA from the Bernard Revel Graduate School in Medieval Jewish history.  In addition to his work at the Beth Din of America as an administrator, mesader gittin, and dayan, Rabbi Zylberman serves on the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary faculty as a rosh chabura and functions as the director of geirut for the Rabbinical Council of America.  He is the author of Tov Lev on Masechet Pesachim with an appended Kuntreis Da'at Yehudit on the laws of Gittin and Gerut.

The Value of Friendship with Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz and Rabbi Shalom Rosner

We decided to dedicate an episode of The Koren Podcast to friendship. We all know that the mourning observed during Sefirat HaOmer is due to the lack of respect shown by the students of Rabbi Akiva to each other. Just in time for Lag BaOmer, we had the chance to speak with two people who live and breathe friendship as a Torah value. Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz, director of Semicha at RIETS and Rabbi of Beis HaKnesses of North Woodmere, and Rabbi Shalom Rosner, Ram at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh and Rabbi of Kehillat Nofei HaShemesh, have been friends and hevrutot for more than 20 years. Rabbis Rosner and Lebowitz, on top of their professional and pastoral duties, both deliver daf yomi shiurim online to thousands upon thousands of people every day, to say nothing of their respective halakha, parasha, tanakh, hashkafa, and many other shiurim besides. We spoke about their friendship and its importance on their journeys to becoming leaders of Modern Orthodoxy today, their inspirations, the value of friendship in general, and what it takes to build successful, modern orthodox communities in America and in Israel. It was such an honor to spend time in the presence of these two truly great friends as they shared words of inspiration, words of Torah, and teased each other just a little bit. ______________________________________________________________ Useful Links: Shalom Rav: Insights on the Weekly Parasha volumes 1 and 2 by Rabbi Shalom Rosner Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz's Daf Yomi Shiur Rabbi Shalom Rosner's Daf Yomi Shiur Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz on Twitter Rabbi Rosner's recorded Shiurim Rabbi Lebowitz's recorded Shiurim | | Get 10% off your next order from www.korenpub.com with code PODCAST at checkout. Rav Avigdor Miller (1908-2001) was a unique and influential rabbinical leader on the American scene of the 20th century. With his life spanning most of the tumultuous 20th century, his life story is somewhat a microcosm of Jewish life during historic times. Born in Baltimore into a home of immigrants, he went to study in RIETS in New York and eventually made the courageous decision to cross the ocean to study in the Slabodka Yeshiva in Lithuania. It was there under the tutelage of his rebbi Rav Isaac Sher and other great mussar personalities that would come to define him and his teachings for the rest of his life. It was also there that he married his wife Chana Etel Lesin, the daughter of Rav Yaakov Moshe Lesin the rabbi of Neishtat-Sugind. After spending six years in Slabodka, he returned home in late 1938, at the cusp of a long career where he would transmit the legacy of the past to generations of students and congregants.   For sponsorship opportunities about your favorite topics of Jewish history contact Yehuda at:  yehuda@yehudageberer.com   Subscribe To Our Podcast on:    PodBean: https://jsoundbites.podbean.com/   Follow us on Twitter or Instagram at @Jsoundbites You can email Yehuda at yehuda@yehudageberer.com

Rav Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg zt”l, who passed away in September 2020 at the age of 89, was a towering rabbinic authority who provided halakhic guidance to Jews throughout the world on a panoply of contemporary issues. He possessed a unique blend of phenomenal erudition and real-world perspicacity. When approached for his expertise on contemporary halakhic questions, such as the difficult 9/11 Aguna cases or various mamzerut issues, he would unflinchingly tackle every question, leaving no stone unturned in his rigorous and detailed analysis. One of his legendary traits was to apply the intricacies of halakhic discourse to the practical world of contemporary dispute resolution in the Jewish community. In so doing he brought traditional lomdus down to earth. To help readers gain an appreciation of his sense of practical halakha in the context of the modern beit din, TRADITION recently published a translation of his important essay “Shivhei HaPeshara” (Fall 2021) about the many practical advantages of deciding cases according to principles of equity or compromise, the standard utilized by many rabbinical courts today, and not simply according to strict halakha (din). This essay is an excellent introduction to understand R. Zalman Nechemiah's halakhic thought and offers insight to the mind and heart of one of our generation's most significant halakhists. As“In Praise of Peshara” is somewhat technical in nature we invited R. Yona Reiss and R. Daniel Z. Feldman, of TRADITION's editorial board, to discuss it, unpack its ideas, and enable greater understanding of the issues. They each describe their own personal relationships with R. Zalman Nechemiah, and how this essay reflects larger themes in his worldview and jurisprudence. Subscribers can access “In Praise of Peshara” at: https://traditiononline.org/in-praise-of-peshara  Rabbi Daniel Z. Feldman is a Rosh Yeshiva at the RIETS, an instructor in the Sy Syms School of Business and the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, and the spiritual leader of Ohr Saadya in Teaneck, NJ. He has authored nine volumes on Jewish law and thought, most recently “False Facts and True Rumors: Lashon HaRa in Contemporary Culture,” and serves as the Executive Editor of the RIETS initiative of YU Press. Rabbi Yona Reiss is the Av Beth Din of the Chicago Rabbinical Council and a Rosh Yeshiva at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) at Yeshiva University, where he holds the Rabbi L. Katz Chair in Professional Rabbinics. He is the author of “Kanfei Yona,” a compendium of essays and responsa about contemporary issues in Jewish law. (Read R. Reiss' eulogy for R. As the foundational text of the Oral Torah in Judaism, the Mishnah is generally analyzed to understand Jewish law and the workings of the halakhic system. But Yakov Nagen, in looking at over two hundred mishnayot, identifies fascinating literary devices employed by the Sages to convey a deeper meaning, even the Mishnah's 'inner spirit.' Join us as we talk with Yakov Nagen about his work, The Soul of the Mishna. Yakov Nagen is a senior rabbi at the Otniel Yeshiva in Israel, where he teaches Talmud, halakha, Jewish thought, and Kabbala. He also serves as director of Ohr Torah Stone's Beit Midrash for Judaism and Humanity. He received his rabbinical ordination from RIETS at Yeshiva University and holds a PhD in Jewish Philosophy from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also the author of Be, Become, Bless: Jewish Spirituality between East and West(Maggid, 2019). In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Rabbi Menachem Penner—dean of RIETS at Yeshiva University—and his son Gedalia—a musician, cantor-in-training, and member of the LGBTQ community—about their experience in reconciling their family’s religious tradition with Gedalia’s sexual orientation. When Gedalia realized he was gay as a young teenager, his parents weren’t sure how best to deal with the information. They initially attempted conversion therapy, now known to be ineffective at best and harmful at worst. They have since come to a happier, closer place in their relationship, characterized by love and mutual respect - but the road to this happy ending was long and indirect. Among the topics covered, we discuss the following: When did Gedalia and his parents realize he was gay? How did they react to this information? What was their initial course of action, and how has that changed over the years? Do they have any regrets? And what would they advise others in similar situations? Tune in to hear Gedalia and Rabbi Penner discuss their journey towards acceptance and mutual understanding. Rischa's second foray into speculative what-if scenarios begins with an elaborate set-up of the Lithuanian Yeshiva -American Monies connection of the 1920's and the major role played by visionaries like Rabbi Dov Revel.Rabbi Kivelevitz provides the salient specifics of the founding and flourishing of Yeshivas Shaar HaTorah in Grodno.Rabbi Bechhofer confirms Kivelevitz's assessment of the unique skillset and persona that combined within Rav Shimon Yehuda Shkop Zt'l that made him the perfect catalyst for growth and quantitative advancement for the motivated Ben Torah of the early 20th Century and why the administration of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchanan made him their prime candidate in succeeding the tragically departed Rav Shlomo Polyacheck, the MeitscheterIllui. While in the real world,Rav Shimon heeded the calls of the Chofetz Chaim and Rav Chaim Ozer to return to Europe, the Rischa duo sketches the arc of probabilities had he remained.Kivelevitz and Bechhofer disagree if sans Rav Moshe Soloveichick's influential role, would his son, Rav Yoseph Dov , have become the towering influential teacher and philosopher for American generations to come.Bechhofer asks Kivelevitz to complete the fantasy with an alternate landing role for the under appreciated Gaon and Scholar, Rav Zelik Epstein, who as Rav Shimon's disciple and granddaughter's husband, might have wielded a role in Yeshiva University commensurate with his predilections and vision. Part 2: While some people read history, there are rare people who lived history through their own lives. One such individual was Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld (1923-2020). Born in Vienna into a family of Ger chassidim from Poland, his father's position as General Secretary of the World Agudas Yisroel placed at the epicenter of traditional Jewish activism at the crucial interwar period. Eyewitness to Austria's Anschluss with Nazi Germany, he subsequently fled on a kindertransport eventually settling in London. He'd ultimately settle in the Kew Garden Hills neighborhood in Queens. Drawn to Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, he'd receive semicha from RIETS and embark on a lifelong rabbinic career with the Young Israel as well as nationally with the RCA. As someone who traversed all worlds within Jewish society, he'd be affiliated with a myriad of Jewish organizations, cultivate relationships with some of the greatest Torah leaders of the 20th century, and enjoy access to the corridors of power in both Israel and the United States. In the past few months, Modern Orthodoxy has suffered the loss of some of this generation's greatest leaders including Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm zt"l and Rabbi Dr. Nachum Rabinovitch zt"l. Our leaders have also faced challenges and had to find creative answers to some incredibly challenging questions arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic but does Modern Orthodoxy have Gedolim? What is a Gadol? Do Modern Orthodox Jews subscribe to a system of centralized leadership or do we draw on a wealth of different sources to come to a more pluralistic system of religious leadership? Inspired by contributions at The Lehrhaus, we sat down with Prof. Chaim Saiman (Lehrhaus Consulting Editor, Professor and Chair in Jewish Law at Villanova University’s Charles Widger School of Law, Dayan at the Beth Din of America) and with Rabbi Netanel Wiederblank (Maggid Shiur at Yeshiva University, RIETS, and the Mazer School of Talmudic Studies) to discuss. To read the original articles discussed in this episode see here:https://thelehrhaus.com/commentary/the-market-for-gedolim-a-tale-of-supply-and-demand/https://thelehrhaus.com/commentary/netanel-wiederblank-response/Get 10% off your next order at www.korenpub.com with promo code PODCAST at checkout.

In this second installment, we'll examine another few personalities who were associated with the growth of Torah in the United States through their involvement with RIETS/YU. An unparalleled genius, Rav Chaim Heller (1879-1960) served in several capacities, among which he gave classes at RIETS in his later years. He devoted the better part of his scholarly investment towards a refutation of Bible criticism, and wrote extensively on the topic. Perhaps no other name is more synonymous with RIETS than Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, or simply "the Rav" (1903-1993). Succeeding his father's position in 1941, commenced a decades long endeavor of teaching thousands of students and generations of Rabbis. His influence resonates within the institution and beyond till this very day. An earlier builder of of RIETS was the almost forgotten Rabbi Dr. Hillel Hakohen Klein (1849-1926). An architect of Jewish life in New York, he spearheaded many initiatives, projects and institutions, leaving his stamp on almost every area of American traditional life. Among his positions was the presidency of RIETS around the turn of the century. Though Rabbi Moshe Soloveitchik (1879-1941) and his wife Pesha Feinstein (1880-1967) achieved renown as parents of Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, they led quite interesting lives on their own merit as well. Born in Volozhin as a scion to the aristocracy of the Lithuanian Torah world, a merger was made with the Feinstein's, another member of the Rabbinic elite. Pesha had a dominant personality, and as a result their home became quite unique. After a Rabbinic career was cut short by the Bolshevik repression of religion, Rav Moshe experienced a stormy decade from all directions while residing in Warsaw. In dispute after dispute, he displayed a brilliant if iconoclastic image. In the late 1920's he assumed the position of Rosh Yeshiva at RIETS on the Lower East Side, a position he maintained till his passing. Although the story of RIETS/YU is huge and would take some time to cover, we can perhaps get a bit of a taste by examining the lives of some of the great people who graced the Yeshiva with their presence over the years. In this episode we'll meet the first Rosh Yeshiva of what was to become RIETS, R' Shlomo Nosson Kotler (1865-1945). Described by some as the greatest Talmid chacham ever to live in the United States, his varied career brought to America twice before he eventually settled in Israel. This is followed by the architect of the concept of Yeshiva College, Rabbi Dr. Bernard Revel (1885-1940), who did more than anyone else to create the Yeshiva that we know today. Finally, we'll meet R' Moshe Shatzkes (1881-1958), the great Lomza Rov who spent his later years at the helm of RIETS. One of the greatest Rabbinical leaders of interwar Poland, he headed the Vaad Hayeshivas there before escaping to America via Kobe, Japan.
