Parents across the MidWest have breathed a long awaited sigh of relief as a new respite centre for the region officially opened this week. Children and Disabilities Minister Norma Foley cut the ribbon at Hazeldine in Barefield, which will employ 24 people and provide 1,400 nights of respite care per year. Clare County Council has requested an independent safety review of two "notorious" junctions on the M18. It comes amid a heightened focus on the Clare stretch of the motorway following a spate of recent collisions. Much of the focus of late has been closer to the south of the county, with five collisions last month occurring between Cratloe and Dromoland. But two junctions further up have consistently been the scene of near misses and road crashes and have prompted the council to call for an independent review. These are the slip roads and exits respectively at Junction 13 Tulla and Junction 14 Barefield, with multiple motorists raising concerns that the stopping distance is too short for exiting and when attempting to merge. Ennis Councillor Antoinette Baker Bashua says it's particularly dangerous for tourists and day visitors. Another elected representative meanwhile believes average speed camers are needed on the N18 specifically to garauntee safe driver behaviour. Cratloe Councillor Pat O'Gorman says local homeowners feel their taking their lives into their own hands every day.

Clare FM's Derek Dormer speaks with players & management from Eire Óg and Doora Barefield ahead of the 2025 TUS Clare SFC Final
Éire Óg boss Shane Daniels says they can't afford to let outside noise distract them in their attempts to regain the TUS Clare Senior Football Championship. The Townies are hot favourites to follow up the success of their hurlers and secure a senior championship double and a fourth Jack Daly crown in five years. An impressive group stage campaign saw them record three wins from three and that was followed up with victories over Miltown and Lissycasey in the quarter finals and semi finals respectively. Daniels says they're solely focused on delivering an improved performance from their last four success. Meanwhile Doora Barefield's Eoin Thynne says their biggest challenge is playing mistake-free football on Sunday. The Parish defender claims despite the 10 point defeat inflicted on them the last time the sides met, the scoreboard didn't represent the pattern of play. Thynne says any hint of complacency will be duly punished. Throw in on Sunday is at 3:30pm with commentary thanks to Brian Pyne Tiles Westgate Business Park, Kilrush Road, Ennis.

Doora/Barefield manager Donagh Vaughan claims their TUS Clare Senior Football Final appearance is 'five years in the making'. The Parish will contest their first decider in 13 years when they take on reigning champions Éire Óg on Sunday afternoon in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg. After coming through the group phase with just one point, wins over Kilmurry Ibrickane in the quarter final and Cratloe in the last four saw them through to the big game. Vaughan says there's a great buzz around the parish going into the game and that his players are determined to deliver a performance. Meanwhile, Éire Óg star, Mark McInerney, claims they're well aware of the threat Doora/Barefield pose to their crown. The Townies needed extra time to overcome the same opposition in the Cusack Cup final earlier this year. McInerney, says their sole focus is on what they can control, heading into Sunday. Throw in on Sunday is at 3:30pm with commentary thanks to Brian Pyne Tiles Westgate Business Park, Kilrush Road, Ennis.
One of Éire Óg's key men says they're confident of maintaining their 100% record in this year's TUS Clare Senior Football Championship and securing the county title in the process. The Townies are aiming to be the first side since Cratloe in 2014 to secure a senior championship double, when they face Doora/Barefield in the final on Sunday afternoon. Victory would see Shane Daniel's charges retain the title they won 12 months ago and secure Jack Daly for the fourth time this decade. Corner back, Dean Ryan, says although they can take confidence from their Cusack Cup victory over the same opposition, they can't afford to rest on their laurels. Meanwhile, Doora Barefield will turn to youth to help see them get their hands on Jack Daly. Captain Darragh O'Shea says they're hopeful they can finally turn recent underage success into a senior county title.

A Clare sporting legend is to be honoured in the US next month. ‘Honest John' Purcell is set to be posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Olympic Club of San Francisco. The Barefield athlete is regarded as one of the world's greatest all-round track and field athlete during the 1880s. His world titles in the hop-step-and-jump and long jump led to him becoming a household name at home in Ireland, as well as the UK, Canada, and the United States. Members of the Purcell family will travel to attend the ceremony on the 9th of October. To discuss this in detail, great-grandniece Sinéad Purcell and author Seamus O'Sullivan joined Alan Morrissey live in-studio on Monday's Morning Focus
