The long-awaited opening of a new service station on the outskirts of Ennis is being hailed as a win for the economy of the county town and its surrounds. Following a lengthy battle, the Supermac's Banner Plaza at Junction 12 on the M18 has officially opened its doors this afternoon. The station is the result of a €20 million investment and is responsible for the creation of more than 120 jobs. A Midwest migrants rights charity says a new report shows there's a "lack of oversight and adequate governance" from management of an accommodation centre for asylum seekers in south-east Clare. HIQA's latest inspection of the Knockalisheen Accommodation Centre in lower Meelick has found that the provider failed to comply with eight standards. "Significant risks" associated with the premises were identified as well as "serious fire safety concerns" while it was also observed that some residents "felt unsafe" following a number of violent incidents at the facility. Doras CEO John Lannon has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons it's clear there has been no meaningful improvement in the quality of accommodation being provided at the centre since the last inspection.

Post Offices in Carrigaholt and Shannon will remain open after new contractors were appointed at both locations. In a statement to Clare FM, An Post has confirmed there will be no reduction or disruption to services in either location, although Shannon's office may be relocated to a new unit within Shannon Town Centre. It brings a period of uncertainty to an end for both communities after the former Postmasters in Carrigaholt and Shannon tendered their resignations in September. Shannon Fine Gael Councillor Tony Mulcahy has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that it's a huge relief for the town.

A Clare developer claims allowing the private sector to fund the construction of wastewater infrastructure would "definitely" speed up its delivery. Housing Minister James Browne has tabled a proposal whereby developers would be responsible for building wastewater treatment plants. Once the EPA finds that the plants meet environmental standards, they would then be taken in charge by Uisce Éireann. Ciaran Breen of Ciaran Breen Construction has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons he believes it would give developers a greater incentive to complete the project on schedule.

There's a call for hidden cameras to be installed in illegal dumping blackspots in rural parts of Clare following a serious incident over the weekend. A large number of items were found disposed of in a ditch on what's known locally as the Farmer's Road in the Rossmanagher area of Sixmilebridge on Sunday. The items included a quad bike, a propane gas tank, children's toys and several plastic materials. Cratloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat O'Gorman has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons he believes GDPR is protecting illegal dumpers and not the general public.

Tulla Road Active Travel Scheme

Work is underway on the Tulla Road Active Travel Scheme in Ennis. The project will deliver a continuous 2.2 kilometre primary cycle route and enhanced walking and wheeling facilities on the Tulla Road. Pedestrian crossings are to be upgraded while new crossings will be introduced, junctions will be tightened and various other traffic calming measures will be implemented. Clare County Council estimates the works will take 18 months to complete and has confirmed construction will take place in seven phases, with phase one from Gort na mBláth and Hillcrest expected to take 12 weeks. It follows a new report from the Housing Finance Agency which shows it cost Approved Housing Bodies €247,500 on average to build social homes in this county. The Inis Housing Association is one of the biggest contributors in this regard, and is responsible for over 90 homes in Clare. A Clare homeless charity has branded comments by the Taoiseach on homelessness as "disappointing" and says they ignore the "deeply traumatic" effects of living in emergency accommodation. Micheál Martin has come under fire for claiming homelessness figures are "a bit like hospital waiting lists" in that "it's not the number on the waiting list; it's how fast you get treated". Focus Ireland has called the statement a "poor choice of words", saying "people go to hospitals because they are sick; they do not have to become homeless". Head of Policy and Communications at Novas, which operates a small family hub in Ennis, Una Burns, has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons regardless of how much time people spend with homeless services, the experience often leaves long-lasting wounds.

The manager of the Clare Immigrant Support Centre says he's "absolutely" in favour of introducing new legislation to combat hate speech against migrants. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance has published a new report stating hate speech is "widespread" in Ireland and recommending new laws be brought in to clamp down on the problem. Prior to enacting the Criminal Justice Hate Offences Act 2024 last December, the Government took the decision to remove controversial elements relating to hate speech - prompting the European Commission to claim Ireland is "failing" to comply with laws around criminalisation of race-based violence and hatred. Clare Immigrant Support Centre Manager Simon Ó Treasaigh has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons hateful rhetoric is on the rise and the legal system must play its part in the fight against it.

Clare Gardaí are calling for a shift in driver attitude and behaviour ahead of the winter period. An Garda Síochána is conducting a dedicated road traffic enforcement operation throughout the October Bank Holiday weekend, with every member on duty conducting road traffic enforcement activity. A number of road traffic collisions have occurred on the county's roads network in recent weeks, particularly on the M18 where emergency services were called to the scene of two crashes in one day. Superintendent with the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division, Eddie Golden, has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that drivers need to be extra vigilant this time of year given the darker evenings and poorer weather conditions.

A four bedroomed house built in the early 1970s in the seaside resort of Lahinch and described as a "rare coastal gem” has sold for almost one million euro in an online auction". A new entry in the Residential Property Price Register records that the €986,000 sale of Hy Brazil at Seapark closed on October 7th, and was €111,000 more than the guide price of €875,000. There were three bidders involved in the online auction and all business was done in little more than 30 minutes. Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that despite the high price point, prospective buyers in the county shouldn't be concerned.

Ennis Students Participating In Nationwide Walk-Out Over "Two-Tier Education System"

Students of the Technological University of the Shannon's Ennis Campus are among thousands participating in a walk-out today over what they view as a "two-tier education system". The protest has been coordinated across TUS's six campuses in a bid to shine a light on the perceived inequality between technical universities and "legacy" universities. Among their various asks are that technological universities be granted access to capital funding for the construction of purpose-built student accommodation, that postgraduate stipend funding be increased to the full €25,000 and that professorships be fully implemented. TUS Student Union Deputy President for the Midwest Gearóid Folan has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons "enough is enough" and the time for parity is now.

There's a call for the Government to allocate Clare County Council additional funding to ensure road markings meet safety standards. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Antoinette Baker-Bashua claims many markings in the county town are "faded, worn or barely visible" which she fears "compromises road safety" for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Ennis Municipal District says it conducts a quarterly review of all road markings in the region but admits "it can be difficult" to prioritise them because they are "expensive in terms of cost and labour". Councillor Antoinette Baker-Bashua has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons the dangers are especially prominent at nighttime.

Hundreds of local residents have signed a petition calling for urgent safety upgrades on the main road linking Ennis to West Clare. It follows a serious road traffic collision which occurred just outside McNamee's Londis on the N68 last Friday, which left one person hospitalised. Since 2007, four people have been killed in road traffic incidents along the 2km route between Darragh's North Cross and Bansha Cross. The International Air Transport Association says Dublin's Passenger Cap needs to be lifted to boost capacity in Shannon. At present, a planning rule has capped the number of passengers flying through Dublin each year at 32 million. With the capital already handling 85% of Irish air traffic annually however , many aviation stakeholders have called for more routes to be directed through Shannon instead. The first of three planned 96-bed blocks at University Hospital Limerick has been officially opened. The €105 million project is the largest development to be delivered by the HSE this year and will bring inpatient bed capacity at the facility to 650. The Health Minister says all options are on the table when it comes to fixing the overcrowding crisis in this region. Fine Gael Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill is at University Hospital Limerick today to open the first of three planned 96-bed blocks on the Dooradoyle campus. It comes two weeks after the publication of the findings of HIQA's review of emergency care capacity in the Midwest which recommended either increasing capacity at UHL, expanding the site or building a new hospital with an emergency department in the region. Minister MacNeill has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons that a decision will likely be made by Christmas but short-term solutions are required in the mean time.

An initiative aimed at enhancing the tourism offering of an East Clare town has received €1 million in government funding. The Killaloe-Ballina Twin-Town Tourism, Regeneration and Enhancement Project has been allocated the money under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund. It's understood the project will include proposals outlined in the Killaloe-Ballina plan and will focus on key buildings, sites, laneways, streets, and town centre public realm enhancement and regeneration works. Killaloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons the funding will pave the way for a number of much-needed improvements to come to fruition.

Kilkee And Ballyvaughan Continuing To Discharge Raw Sewerage Daily

Kilkee and Ballyvaughan continue to have raw sewerage discharged into their waters on a daily basis. The Environmental Protection Agency's Urban Wastewater Report for 2024 shows they were among 15 towns and villages doing so, due to a lack of connection to a treatment plant. Kilmihil, meanwhile is being classed as a priority area as mistreated wastewater is causing harm to lakes, rivers, estuaries and coastal waters, while plants at Lahinch and Killaloe failed to meet standards. EPA Drinking Water and Wastewater Enforcement Inspector David Shannon has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that Uisce Éireann must urgently expedite its work.
