10% of pupils in Clare primary schools are in oversized classes. New figures published by the Department of Education show average class sizes in schools have hit their lowest level in more than 25 years, with the average class size now 22.2 pupils, down from 22.5 in the 2023/2024 school year. The biggest class size in this county is at Gaelschoil Michil Ciosóg in Ennis, which had 37 pupils in one classroom, while Parteen and Tulla National Schools each have 96 children learning in classes of over 30 pupils. The reduction in numbers nationally is a result of almost 18 thousand fewer children in first level education and Chair of the Oireachtas Education and Youth Committee, Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that the way in which transient pupils such as travellers and refugees are counted is posing complications.
Kilrush RNLI is hailing the outcome of a search operation in the Shannon Estuary as an "outstanding result". After being spotted by the crew of the Rescue 117 helicopter shortly before 11am, the man was brought to University Hospital Limerick where he's being treated for "severe hypothermia" and is understood to be recovering well. Kilrush RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer Charlie Glynn has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons it was an extremely successful operation and credit is due to all bodies involved.

The Government is said to be at risk of "wiping out" post offices in Clare unless it moves towards a sustainable operating model for the postal service. The contracts for both Shannon and Carrigaholt's post offices have gone to tender following the resignation of their postmasters. In a statement to Clare FM, An Post says it has "two opportunities to partner with An Post in providing post office and financial services to the people of Shannon and Carrigaholt". The vacancies, it says, "arise out of the resignation of the current Postmasters", and its hopes to "attract suitable candidates for both contracts". It's not the first time the threat of a post office closure has loomed for a Clare community this year. Five months ago, doubt was cast over the future of Lahinch Post Office until local business owner Robert Kennedy stepped in to take the postmaster's reins. With Shannon and Carrigaholt now in a similar position, concerns have been raised that if the two facilities closed, it could result in job losses and contribute to rural isolation. Sixmilebridge Fine Gael Councillor John Crowe insists it can't be allowed to happen.

A Clare disability rights activist had dismissed a new Government strategy for providing better accessibility for disabled people as a "glossy document" and a "distraction". The National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People, which is a five-year strategy providing a policy framework for the Government's approach to disability issues, has officially been launched. The strategy contains 23 commitments which are under the pillars of learning and education, employment, independent living and active participation in society, wellbeing and health, and transport and mobility. Ennistymon-based disability rights activist Ann Marie Flanagan has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons she believes the plan lacks the required legal framework for it to have any impact.

The service says it requires 3,000 blood donations each week and while all blood types are needed, O negative and B negative are particularly in demand. Broadford-based Irish Blood Transfusion Service Donor Recruitment Executive Alex O'Connor has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons the summer hot spell has led to an unfortunate drop-off in donations.

An Ennis GP insists cancer care is "exceptionally good" in this region but admits there may be "questions to answer" arising from a new report. An investigation has found that all nine health centres nationwide missed the HSE's target to commence chemotherapy for 90% of patients within eight weeks of their final breast cancer surgery last year. Just 24% of patients at University Hospital Limerick had their first chemo appointment within eight weeks last year and this climbed to just 27% between January and March. Dr Máire Finn of Ennis Medical has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons patients are cared for "thoroughly" and have good clinical outcomes but there's always room for improvement.

It's claimed a reluctance to acquire derelict properties in rural areas is significantly contributing to Clare's ranking as the county with the ninth highest dereliction rate. It comes as the latest Geodirectory report shows both Clare's vacancy and dereliction levels to be 5%, ranking above the national average for both those measures. That's in spite of a 31% increase to the county's housing stock over the course of the last year, with 684 new addresses registered in Clare, while construction was underway on 664 properties during June. GeoDirectory CEO Dara Keogh has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that although the county fares poorly on some of the metrics, there is potential for improvement in the near future.

Leaving Cert students in Clare are pouring over their results this afternoon. Over 1,500 young people across the county have been receiving their final grades since 10am this morning. The anxious wait is over for Clare's 1,412 Leaving Cert and 103 Leaving Cert Applied students, who have been receiving their results online and in person at schools across the county today. This year's results are down due to grade deflation, with top grades down by around 2 per cent. It's the first stage of phasing out grade inflation, which was brought in during the pandemic. Close to 100 Ennis Community College/Gaelcholáiste an Chláir alumni gathered in person to see how they fared and these students have been telling Clare FM how they got on. It begins a busy week for the county's outgoing leaving cer students, with the first round of CAO offers issued on Wednesday, before the appeals window opens on Sunday, August 31st. Guidance Counsellor at St Joseph's Secondary School in Tulla, Donna Ní Ghallchobhair, is advising students to reach out for assistance if they're unsure what steps to take next. She says everyone's pathway after their exams is different, given the array of options available. Meanwhile, Clare Gardaí are urging caution as those who received their results head out to celebrate. Keeping your phone charged, planning where you're headed and how to get home, and staying in touch with a parent throughout the night are the key pieces of advice they've issued. Operational Garda in Ennis, Eoin Cummins says everyone should take responsibility for both themselves and their friend group.
The Minister with Responsibility for the Coast Guard claims Shannon's aviation services are now safer, faster and more efficient than ever before, following the official launch of its new fleet. As part of Bristow Ireland's take over, two fixed wing Beechcraft B200 King Airs will be based at Shannon for the first time ever, while six new purpose built Leonardo AW189 helicopters have been allocated nationwide. There had been early transitional issues with the new provider, leading to complications with medical evacuation calls and shift rostering, while some concerns had been raised over the helicopter's head room and range. Clare FM's Daragh Dolan was in Shannon Airport yesterday for the official launch, he began by speaking to the Director of the Irish Coast Guard Mícheal O'Toole.

Clare is in line to receive both tropical temperatures and thunderstorms this week. Met Eireann is forecasting temperatures as high as 28 degrees for the county today, which is expected to be picked up near Shannon's weather station from 4pm to 6pm this afternoon. Although Clare's temperatures will stay between the high teens and mid twenties for the rest of the week, it's expected the pressure will lead to heavy downpours tomorrow and potentially low level weather warnings. Met Eireann Meteorologist Siobhán Ryan has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that some areas could experience a heatwave.
To review the sporting fixtures, Alan Morrisey was joined on Monday's Morning Focus by Clare FM's Derrick Lynch and Derek Dormer.
The Clare Immigrant Support Network says any plans to charge working asylum seekers for their accommodation must be assessed on a case by case basis. The Government is reportedly considering plans to charge asylum seekers with jobs up to €238 per week to live in IPAS centres to combat rising costs. There are currently 992 International Protection Applicants living across 12 centres in Clare. Clare Immigrant Support Network Manager Simon O'Treasaigh has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that many migrants are in casual employment and insists a one-size fits all approach cannot be applied.
