The more than 100 pub closures in Clare in the past two decades are being attributed to changing attitudes to nightlife and socialising. A new report from the Drinks Industry Group has revealed that 108 pubs have ceased trading here in the last 20 years, accounting for almost 30% of the number operating in the county in 2005. Clare has the 10th highest closure rate nationwide according to the figures, and the Drinks Industry Group is forecasting a further 1,000 closures nationwide within the next decade. Martin Baker of the Burren Inn in Tubber has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons there's no evidence the Government is genuinely listening to the asks of publicans.

An Ireland South MEP has defended her decision to vote against what she's called a "fascist" censure vote of the European Commission President. Ursula von der Leyen has survived the motion tabled today after it failed to secure the required two-thirds majority. The motion was brought forward by a Romanian far-right MEP after von der Leyen's refusal to release text messages exchanged with the Chief Executive of Pfizer during the pandemic. Ireland South MEP Fianna Fáil Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons creating a power vacuum in Europe would only serve to destabilise Ireland and jeopardise its interests.

A prominent Clare developer claims government plans to reduce studio apartment sizes will not stimulate housing growth. It comes as Planning Minister John Cummins and Housing Minister James Browne have published new guidelines that would lower the minimum apartment size from 37 to 32 square metres. The coalition claims the plans would increase delivery without compromising disability, fire safety, or environmental requirements. However, Ciarán Breen of Ciarán Breen Construction in Ennis believes the new measure offers no incentives to builders.
As you've been hearing in our news bulletins, there's been an accusation that democracy hasn't been upheld at a meeting of Ennis's elected representatives. Tense exchanges took place during this week's Ennis Municipal District meeting where residents and business owners flooded the public viewing gallery to observe a discussion about the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan. After a motion tabled by Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O'Callaghan calling for the removal of proposals to reduce two-lane access to Carmody Street, Mill Road, Clare Road, Clonroad, Lifford Road and Highfield Park received unanimous support, the Clarecastle representative asked for a vote on the matter. This request was denied by Mayor of Ennis, Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard, however, who stated that it couldn't go to a vote as public consultation is ongoing. This was met with fierce opposition from Councillor O'Callaghan as well as Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle and members of the public in the gallery. Clare FM's Seán Lyons was at the meeting and spoke to local businessman Michael Barry who was one of those in attendance. Meanwhile, a local community group is lending its support to the Ennis Local Transport Plan, saying “Ennis Can't Stay Stuck in the Past”. Better Ennis, which advocates for healthier town centres, and active and public transport for all ages and abilities has robustly defended many of the proposed interventions that they believe will make the town a much healthier and attractive place to live and work. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Gearóid Mahon and Síle Ginanne from Better Ennis.

The community group, Retailers of Ennis, imposed a blockade on the delivery entrance to Dunnes Stores on Friday in response to the retail giant's erection of an electronic barrier. The barrier came into operation on Thursday and is preventing delivery trucks from accessing businesses on O'Connell Street and Cook's Lane, as they have been doing since the arrival of Dunnes in Ennis in the early 1990s. Clare County Council says "the barrier was not sanctioned or erected by the Local Authority", while "pedestrian access is still being maintained at this location", and "any issues in respect of vehicle rights of way or access are considered to be civil matters". Clare FM's Seán Lyons was at Friday's demonstration and caught up with John O'Connor of Custys Music Shop.

It's claimed that the plateauing of house prices in Clare is the result of the market levelling out, rather than "bucking the trend" of rising house prices. The latest quarterly report from MyHome.ie shows the median cost of a home in Clare is €295,000, the same as in quarter one, but up €20,000 on 2024 figures. However, the cost of a 3-bed-semi-detached house in the county now costs €26,000 more than it did this time last year, despite an over €7,500 price dip since March. Managing Director of Myhome.ie Joanne Geary has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that constrained supply is resulting in the long term continued rise in house prices in Clare.
Clare have been beaten in the quarter final of the All Ireland Senior Camogie championship. John Carmody's side saw their season come to an end in Croke Park after a 2-20 to 2-10 defeat to Waterford. Aine O'Loughlin struck two superbly taken goals in the opening period and it looked as though the sides would go in level at half time, however, Annie Fitzgerald hit the net for the Deise to give them the advantage at half time. Niamh Rockett added a second goal in the dying stages to cap off a 10 point victory a score which Clare FM analyst Anne Marie McGann believes wasn't reflective of the game.

Welcome to another episode of Ours To Protect on Clare FM. Today we'll hear how nearly half of all bird species in Ireland have been found to be in decline, with many populations severely depleted. One in eight bird species globally is currently threatened with extinction. Much of this is as a result of climate change. Birdwatch Ireland carries out extensive scientific research and survey work into our bird populations. The Clare branch is one of the busiest in the country and was co-founded by Ornithologist John Murphy back in 1990. Since then, John has seen a marked decline in bird species in Ireland, much of which has been caused by climate change.
Clare FM has returned to another element of the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan that is causing concern. The issue on this occasion centres around one of the recommendations in the plan, which is for a signalised yield system on the existing Drochaid na Gabhair bridge on the Drumcliffe Road. The activist group Hands Off Our Post Office Field is raising objections to this recommendation. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle and Mayor of Ennis, Mary Howard. PHOTO CREDIT: Drochaid na Gabhair - Make the Bridge Safe via Facebook
A contingency broadband supply is being demanded in West and North Clare following a second major outage in weeks. Extensive accidental damage was caused to the network between Ennistymon and Corofin last night, leaving over 3,500 customers without internet and phone coverage, following an incident involving agricutural machinery. It comes just three weeks after a road traffic collision in Kilrush resulted in the disconnection of services for over 4,000 homes and businesses. West Clare Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan the current system is not equipped to meet modern lifestyle demands.
It's claimed Clare students and their families have been plunged into financial uncertainty by new government plans. It comes as Higher Education Minister James Lawless has confirmed that the €1,000 euro third level fee reduction in place in recent years, will expire this September. The Minister has since signalled his intent to reform the SUSI Grant, while Tánaiste and Fine Gael Leader Simon Harris has indicated that new student supports will be in Budget 2026, but in a different form. However Shannon Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan, who's her party's spokesperson on Further and Higher Education has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that she believes a vital safety net has been taken away.

During their set on the West Holts Stage, Bobby Vylan — one half of the rap-punk duo Bob Vylan — led the crowd in chants including “Free, free Palestine” and “Death, death to the IDF.” Separately, a member of Irish rap group Kneecap appeared to encourage fans to “start a riot” in connection with an upcoming court appearance involving one of the band members. Since 2019's high of having 430 taxis, Clare last 11 taxis, meaning this county has the sixth best retention rate in Ireland for the timeframe. However has Clare's taxi issue improved and are people still facing challenges on nights out and getting to work ? To address the nighttime element at least, Clare FM's Daragh Dolan has been speaking to Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle, who's also a member of the Ennis Purple Flag Committee which is charged with ensuring Ennis has a vibrant, safe and accessible night time offering. Tánaiste and Defence Minister Simon Harris is expected to confirm Ireland's entry into 'Security Action for Europe' today, which will allow the state to acquire military equipment faster and at a lower cost. The SAFE deal only covers specific items such as air defence systems, artillery, ammunition, drones and anti-drone weapons. There's only one day left to make submissions on the Ennis Transport Plan. Over 50 residents living near the Old Mill Road in Ennis attended a protest yesterday over council plans to create a one-way traffic system with a cycle lane on a prominent thoroughfare in the town. Under the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan , its proposed to make the southbound lane of Mill Road stretching from Carmody Street to Harvey Quay's a one way street, to facilitate a footpath, which can't be built at present as a protected structure which cannot be knocked protrudes onto the roadway. It's proposed in this case that Northbound traffic will be re-routed through a residential and commercial area of Cloughleigh. Clare FM's Darragh Dolan was at the protest yesterday and he first spoke to Cloughleigh resident Mary McNamara. A traffic survey by local Garage Owner Pat Foudy has indicated that the new plans will bring up to 5,990 additional vehicles a day up Old Mill Road, and that just 0.2% of traffic analysed on the proposed one-way street at Mill Road was either a pedestrian or a cyclist. The community are now raising concerns over potential congestion as well as road safety issues, particularly in relation to HGVs, while the owner of the protected building at the centre of the controversey claims he was not consulted by the local authority about any potential solution. For more on this, Peter O'Connell was joined by Bridget Ginnity of the Ennis Green Party.
A new medical facility in Ennis is being welcomed as a vote of confidence in the town which will drastically cut journey times for patients. Fresenius Medical Care Limited, which is the operator of the Limerick Dialysis Centre on the Dock Road, has secured planning permission for a renal dialysis facility in the Clare Technology Park. It's understood the unit will be operational between April and June of next year and will feature 20 stations capable of catering for up to 20 patients at any one time. Chairperson Irish Kidney Association's Clare branch, Dermot Hayes, has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons it's a gamechanger for many in the county.
The number of claims made by motorists to Clare County Council for pothole damage has reached a seven year high. New data shows there were 780 complaints made to the local authority last year, resulting in 49 claims, all of which were settled. Just over €7,400 was paid out in compensation to Clare motorists last year, while in the same timeframe the council spent over €37m on road maintenance. Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan however that the funding is not enough and the council is not sufficiently resourced to tackle the problem.

It's claimed the decline in commuter activity in the aftermath of Covid-19 has contributed to the sharp increase in house prices in Clare. According to the latest Daft.ie report, the average cost of a home in the county now stands at just over €277,000 off the back of 10% increases seen in each of the last two years. While since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, house prices in the county have risen almost 50% from just under €187,000. Economist at Trinity College and author of the report, Ronan Lyons has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that the culture of working from home has led to increased prices in counties bordering large cities.

It's claimed new short term letting rules coming into effect from today will have a detrimental impact on Clare's tourism. Following the Government's move to designate the full country a rent pressure zone, short term lets will now be required to apply for special planning permission to continue to operate as normal. It will leave thousands of Airbnbs in rural areas operating illegally this weekend, while in April cabinet signed of on a law that will eventually restrict short-term lets in areas where the population is above 10,000. Ennis AirBnB Host Barry O'Driscoll has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that tourism here cannot survive with short-term lets.

The sides do battle in Ruan after the fixture was rescheduled from Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg earlier this week, with the game getting underway at 7pm. Both sides come into the last four tie in a rich vein of form, finishing in the top two places in Group 1A with The Combo coming out on top in their previous encounter. Clare FM analyst Tommy Guilfoyle says Inagh/Kilnamona's returning county players will make a big difference to the side.
New one way streets, tiered parking prices, park and stride hubs and pedestrian priority could all be trialed in the coming years to reduce traffic congestion in Ennis. Over 200 submissions have now been made to Clare County Council on the Draft Ennis Transport Plan, which will aim to guide investment in infrastructure and optimise the economic, social and health opportunities of transport in the town for at least the next 15 years. The plan will also aim to improve road safety, proposing 116 active travel upgrades and other route alterations across the Ennis catchment area, however the public can very much weigh in and make their own opinions heard, but they have just 8 days left to do so with submissions closing on Friday June 27th. Clare FM's Daragh Dolan has been having a closer look at what impact the plan could have on the future of the town.
Clonlara will be hoping to exact a degree of revenge for their 2024 championship quarter final defeat to Sixmilebridge this weekend. The sides face off in the semi of the WillWeGo.com Clare Cup on Sunday afternoon in Newmarket on Fergus. When they last met in the latter stages of last years championship, The Bridge ran out three point winners en route to the final. Clare FM analyst Tommy Guilfoyle says Clonlara will hope for a good showing after a disappointing 2024.
A Clare Government TD says he's fully in favour of more robust aircraft inspections at Shannon Airport to ensure Ireland is not breaching its neutrality. It comes as the Social Democrats have written to the EU's fraud watchdog 'OLAF' calling for it to investigate if the state is facilitating Israel's war in Gaza, by failing to inspect "high risk" flights into Shannon. Among the notable alleged incidents is that a cargo plane used to transport weapons to Israel, spent 14 hours at Shannon Airport in March, while the Department of Foreign Affairs has also confirmed it does not search any military aircraft. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Aviation and Logistics, Meelick Deputy Cathal Crowe has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that many internal investigations are ongoing.
A Clare financial advisor says the winner should take measured decisions, assemble a team of experts and tell no-one. Tommy Corbett of Carey Corbett Financial Solutions has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons that given the nature of Irish communities, it'll be "very difficult" for the successful ticket-holder to keep it quiet for long.
Speculation is mounting as to the identity of the country's newest multimillionaire. The 250 million euro pot is the largest amount of money ever won here. The National Lottery has confirmed the ticket was bought in a shop and not online. It says the lucky winner will be in shock, but is asking them to get in touch as soon as possible. These people have been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady what they'd do, if they had the golden ticket.
This weekend, Tim Smyth Park in Ennis will be filled with hope, music, and community spirit for Relay for Life Clare, a 24-hour event from 2pm Saturday, June 21st to 2pm Sunday. There are concerns among the undocumented Irish in America that they could end up in Guantanamo Bay. That's despite the Trump administration denying its planning to send illegal immigrants to the US run prison in Cuba. The Department of Foreign Affairs also says it understands there are no plans to do this. An immigration lawyer told the Irish Examiner there's uncertainty within Irish communities in the US and they're nervous about travelling home to Ireland for holidays. To discuss this situation further, Clare FM's Peter O'Connell spoke with New York-based immigration lawyer Lorcan Shannon earlier.
It's claimed Clare's students, young families and children in poverty will feel all the adverse consequences of incoming rent controls. Opposition parties will hold a protest outside the Dáil at 6pm this evening to coincide with a Sinn Féin private members bill calling for emergency action to alleviate the housing crisis and increased investment in social housing. The Government is expected to bring legislation before Cabinet this week that will make the entire country a rent pressure zone, along with restrictions on no fault evictions and a six year security of tenancy. Clare Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that the plans are skewed to favour landlords.
